BLURB

There’s one thing you should know.

I wasn’t that drunk.

I was more than sober enough to put a stop to it.

The truth is, it was my idea. I’m the one who suggested it.

I knew it was crazy, but it’s not as if I’d be the first girl to get married on a whim in Las Vegas. I wouldn’t even be the last girl to get married on a whim in Las Vegas.

So what’s my excuse? I liked him. I liked the idea that he’d be stuck with me, just for a little bit.

Because nothing good ever lasts, so you might as well have a good time while you can.

Bella Love-Wins – ARC Cards of Love Nine of Swords

“Whatever the cause, I like it. He’s my king. I’m his pet. And nothing will change that, even our being apart.”

Okay, I have been looking forward to the Cards of Love series. Bella Love-Wins novella, Nine of Swords, is the second book I have read of this series. Thankfully, I received an ARC of it after requesting one, and again, like Leah Holt’s the Queen of Pentacles, it is a little nugget of tasty romance. I will say that the only downfall to this series is the book type, the novella. For each of these books, I have wanted more. And I think that’s great as it means the story is compelling, and the characters engage the reader.

The Nine of Swords involves the characters, Blade and Sydney. Sydney’s parents are killed in front of her at the age of ten. She vows retribution upon the man responsible for killing her parents. One day, after the training of her life, she completes her mission; however, this puts a target on her back, or so she thinks. Instead, we find that Sydney’s family history places the figurative target on her. While she is capable of protecting and defending herself, an unknown person hires Blade to offer her more protection. From his first sight of her, he feels an attraction to her. Once he introduces himself to her, and he protects her from a serious threat, they give in to their attraction. This leads to further complications, and they must spend their future protecting their gift.

There is so much to like in this story. To begin, Sydney is a bad-ass woman. Any woman with her past could have easily fallen victim to grief from the tragedy that befalls her in her childhood. Instead, she uses the death of her parents to change her future, building skills to protect herself. Even Blade recognizes her capacity to protect herself. She is strong and determined and everything you want to read in a book heroine.

And Blade. Well, he’s impressive. Clearly, he is physically attracted to her from the outset. This is where I wish there was more book space because I’d like to see the development of the emotional/spiritual component of their relationship. However, he is the typical alpha dominant, ready to allow Sydney to be protected and fulfilled in the bedroom.

As I stated above, this series makes it so difficult for its readers because we want more development in the space of a novella. We get a little bit of the anonymous threat to Sydney, but it requires a full-length novel to flesh out that story. If I have to be disappointed with anything in this story, it’s that. I simply want more Blade, more Sydney, and more story.

However, for a quick bite of frisky romance, this book does not disappoint.

Overall: 4 Delicious Stars

Author Crimson Syn was born and raised in New York City to two wonderfully witty and loving Colombian parents who have only shown their support for her throughout the years. She started writing at the age of sixteen as an outlet for being bullied in high school. It’s probably the best thing she’s ever done in my life. The first romance she ever read was Stephanie Laurens’ Devil’s Bride and since then she has been influenced by dozens of flourishing romance authors and even more dashing and daring rogues. Authors like Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt, Lisa Kleypas, Bertrice Small or A.N. Roquelaure’s Sleeping Beauty trilogy were her sweet introductions to erotic romance and have inspired her to this day. So here she is, after reading so many wonderful stories and living out so many fantasies, she now has too many sinful tales of her own not to share. She had delightfully wicked teachers growing up, their books took her to new worlds and brought her new loves. So, she wants to do the same for you. She wants to indulge her readers in those steamy reads that will send you into the arms of dangerous alphas and deliciously sexy rogues without leaving the confines of your nice warm beds. If she is able to entice your inner goddesses, then she has done her job and she is satisfied. Her Hellbound Lovers series is one of the proudest moments in her life. Wolf was her first published work and she has to say he’s opened so many amazing doors for her, and publishing him has taught her that if you set your mind to something you can accomplish anything. She writes her characters and stories for you, her lovely readers, and she hopes she can take you away to those page turning, lip biting, bookmarking passionate tales.  Goodreads BookBub Facebook Facebook Reader Group

About the Author:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Leah Holt – ARC Queen of Pentacles (Cards of Love)

To say I’m excited about the Cards of Love book collection would be an understatement. Thus far, I’ve read Sierra Simone’s The Moon, and I’m waiting for Ashley Jade’s The Devil, along with many more. When given the opportunity to sign up for an ARC of Leah Holt’s Queen of Pentacles, I jumped. She posted a teaser from one of the final chapters in this novella, and I was hooked. There was something provocative about the characters, Ash and Nola, and I knew I wanted to read an advanced copy to see the development of their story.

According to Holt, The Queen of Pentacles “when facing upright, […] is motherly, showing a love for others. [,,,] This card wants you to be practical, compassionate, and down-to-earth when dealing with people.” And at the outset of their story, Nola embodies this queen. She teeters on the edge of giving too much of herself and caring too much about others that it can be her downfall. In the story, Nola illustrates this initially by giving into her temptation at the hands of Ash. She is not someone who would make hasty decisions that might imperil her professional standing, but her connection to Ash and her want to give herself completely to him sexually are too great. As a character, she is a strong woman who simply makes some questionable choices that get her in quite a bit of trouble.

Now, from the outset, Ash seems uncomplicated and typically male in his lust for Nola. He sees her initially as a quick one-night stand. He is clearly attracted to her, but, like any good romance, he realizes quickly that she completes him. What was meant to be a one-night stand quickly becomes something more. When they meet again, we find that Nola is Ash’s new boss, and their chemistry grows, connecting them beyond their one night. From that point, Ash knows beyond a doubt that Nola is his everything. He realizes this before Nola, a refreshing change from many romances where men take longer to realize their deeper feelings.

I have to admit that I sometimes struggle with novellas because I want more story, and that isn’t the point of a novella. I want more back story for Ash and Nola. I don’t want to rush their love story, but the form of the novella doesn’t allow that. That being said, Holt develops the story and the characters well within that format, and we leave the book fulfilled with Ash and Nola’s story from beginning to end.

What we learn about the Queen of Pentacles is that the upside down card which begets “…chaos and an inability to separate what’s important” easily becomes right side up with love. Ash and Nola together embody this truth in Leah Holt’s romance.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

Kandi Steiner – ARC The Wrong Game

TWG Cover FINAL.png

I was gifted with an ARC of Kandi Steiner’s book, The Wrong Game. I had been reading synopses of it on her Facebook page and Instagram account, and I knew I wanted to read it. Every tidbit she posted, I gobbled. When given the opportunity to sign up for it, I jumped at the chance to add my name to the list. Thankfully, I opened my email yesterday to find that I had the ARC in my Kindle Library. No sooner did I finish reading the email, then I was in my library, pulling up the book. I began it yesterday evening and finished it the today. Needless to say, it was an addictive page-turner.

As I was reading this book, I began thinking about my reasons for liking a particular romance book. I won’t leave that here in this review. Instead, I will post another blog post with my observations after this one because I think it’s important to think about why we like particular romance novels or authors, for that matter. I can tell you easily my reasons for loving Ms. Steiner’s The Wrong Game, so here goes.

Characters:💙💙💙💙💙

A five heart rating is my highest. And Steiner’s characters in this book do not disappoint. I like characters who are multi-dimensional. If they aren’t, then they better serve some purpose to the story. In The Wrong Game, Gemma and Zach are the main characters. From the outset, we recognize Gemma’s strength. She endures tragedy two-fold, and she shows her resilience even through her struggles. To me, this is key to any book heroine. It’s what I value in a strong woman, not that they be strong through every moment, but that they survive it with grace. Now, Zach. Zach is the epitome of the book boyfriend. He is everything you like: handsome with an incredible body and a solid “man-tool” (so gross, I know), kind, compassionate, a smart-ass, alpha between the sheets, and…a romantic. This last part is key to Zach’s character. He self-identifies as a “feminist” based on the way his parents raised him. He is every woman’s dream. Together, they bring out the best in each other, and they have a personal chemistry that pulls you into their relationship. You root for them to succeed from the outset.

Now, the supporting cast of this book is the EVERYTHING, beginning with Gemma’s bestie, Belle. Belle is Steiner’s voice of reason with a lot of funny. She is the one who pulls Gemma up when she struggles. She makes her see her interest in Zach, and she is Gemma’s shoulder to cry on during her struggles. I found myself laughing out loud at her one-liners and her plan to get Zach and Gemma together. I would LOVE to have a best friend like Belle. And I’m hoping Steiner has a book with her name on it (hopefully, with Dr. Jordan). Along with Belle, there is Zach’s family (that includes Doc too). Like Belle, they ground Zach and help him stay true to himself when he faces challenges with Gemma. Even more, what’s not to love about parents who have raised their son to hold true to his feelings and to share those feelings without stuffing them deep. They are THE wisdom of parenting in this book. While reading this book, you wish that you could have these characters in your life.

Story: 💙💙💙💙💙

From the “Prologue,” I was hooked. I messaged out to Steiner that she was already crushing me from the outset, and I worried that I wouldn’t make it out unscathed. Thankfully, “Chapter 1” provided a comedic reprieve courtesy of Belle, so I could quiet the pain in my stomach. However, there is still plenty of angst in this book. Steiner always promises that. However, she does it folded in with humor and a chemistry between the main characters that allows you to believe they will make it to the end. I don’t want to give much away in the story other than it’s a second chance at love story. Gemma’s ex-husband has hurt her deeply, and Zach must choose to fight for them or let her go. That’s all I’ll say, but the story grabs you and keeps you pinned until the end.

Sexiness Quotient: 💙💙💙💙

Now, I read all kinds of romance from clean to dark erotica. On this scale, The Wrong Game sits to the right of the middle. Yes, it has some steamy sex scenes, and Gemma and Zach have quite the sexual chemistry. However, the sex isn’t crazy. It’s the sex of a rom-com with a little bit of a$$-licking (courtesy of Zach). It really doesn’t seem to go much further than that. But the sex is passionate and fire, and it will raise your blood pressure just a little, enough to make you wish you were Gemma.

Style: 💙💙💙💙💙

As I mentioned in my introduction, after reading Steiner’s book, I started to articulate in my mind what I deem as great style. Oftentimes, it’s the way words are put together to create poetic images. But I also value the way the written word flows through my mind as I read. It is important for me to hear the characters.  I don’t want to hear my voice reading the words. Instead, I want to hear Gemma’s and Zach’s and Belle’s and Doc’s voices too. This is what Steiner does well. It is what stood out to me as I was reading her book. I could hear them, and the conversations between the characters were so compelling that I would find myself skipping past narrative descriptions to get to the dialogue of the characters. This is Steiner’s brilliance as a romance writer. She uses words to build relationships that are meaningful and real. Through her words, I was able to recognize what I value with an author’s writing style.

Overall:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I wanted an ARC of The Wrong Game based on a few snippets I read on social media, and Steiner’s book definitely did not disappoint. The characters are real people living in the “realness” of relationships, fighting for love in the “game” of life. While her title is The Wrong Game, it is definitely the right read at the right time. And this professor HIGHLY recommends it.

Olivia Ryann – ARC Covet

“He’s just…like he is. Passionate, enraging, and completely fucking insane. And me? I’m just the naive little girl who happens to be owned by him.”

Covet is the third book in Olivia Ryann’s dark mafia captive romance series. This book continues the saga of Katherine Carolla (Fiore) and Arsen (“Monster”). At the conclusion of Ryann’s last book, Control, Fiore has fallen from a cliff. We are literally with a cliffhanger. This book begins where that left off. It isn’t a spoiler, per se, that Fiore has survived her fall, but the question remains whether Arsen will kill her or keep her captive. In this third book, we find the two grow closer, mostly due to their sexual chemistry. In fact, Fiore’s captivity becomes more muddled, and the two, Arsen and Fiore, struggle to understand their respective connection. Neither of them fully trusts the other, but they are connected to each other in ways that make both of them uncomfortable. Like Control, this book also ends with a cliffhanger, and the reader is left to the fourth book in the series, Cherish, to find out the resolution.

For me, this is the strongest book in the series to date. While Katherine/Fiore is a slave to Arsen/Monster, she has more power over him than previously thought. The more he connects with her sexually, the more she casts a spell over him, and we see their relationship become more complicated. Even more, we find more humanity in Arsen than previously thought. He is still, however, borderline psychotic, but there is a part of the reader who believes he might find some redemption if he simply chooses Fiore to be his “queen.” This is my main reason for reading dark erotica: to read the anti-hero’s redemption. It is never fully realized in the traditional sense of the hero, but it’s exciting and sexy and allows the reader to accept the former “bad boy” (think Meghan March’s Lachlan Mount). Arsen is no different, and I look forward to reading Cherish for more of his change.

Overall, I am enjoying this series and its darkness. This book definitely lightened up quite a bit, but it’s still shadowy beneath the surface. Just when you think Arsen is more human than “monster,” the more you realize he is still very much Katherine’s captor.

Overall:  5 Star Read

Jayne Frost – ARC Down to You – Sixth Street Bands #5

I have to admit. I had never read anything by Jayne Frost prior to receiving an ARC of this book. I didn’t read the first four books of the Sixth Street Band series. Even more, I don’t typically read the rocker romance. It isn’t that I don’t like it; it just isn’t my first choice of romantic tropes.

Jayne Frost has changed my mind.

Have you ever needed to move beyond a trauma? Has that trauma left you isolated and broken? Those are the questions of Logan and Tori’s story in Down to You. Tori, the widow of Rhenn and former band member in Damaged, is still grieving her husband six years later. She and her friend, Taryn, are managers of bands. Logan is the lead singer of one of the bands they manage, Caged. Both Tori and Logan are victims of trauma, and they make choices in their lives due to those traumas. Additionally, Logan harbors a secret from everyone except his best friend, and that secret oftentimes sets him up for miscommunication and trouble. At the beginning of the story, Logan is arrested for a fight. This causes problems for his band’s impending tour. In order for the band to commence the tour, Tori offers his bond and must accompany him on the tour. From the outset, it appears that the two frustrate each other; there is no love lost between the two. However, Logan helps save Tori from herself and their bond is cemented. Again, how do you move on from your trauma in order to love another? That is the question of this story.

”The logical part of my brain told me to protect my heart. That Logan’s damage and my damage were too much to overcome. There wasn’t enough left of either of us to survive if we crashed to earth. But I wouldn’t think about that now. For a few more hours, we’d simply float.”

The depth of this story is its prize. Yes, it’s a romance with two characters who are seemingly ethereal given their rock star statuses. But ultimately, they are only human. That humanity and their brokenness create a story that reaches into your heart and breaks it just a bit. This romance illustrates the fragility of human nature.

Jayne Frost builds this story with a slow burn between Logan and Tori. They do not instantly jump into bed with each other. Instead, they come to be friends first. They develop an emotional intimacy initially which allows them to eventually become physical. That slow burn isn’t prolonged for too long that the reader becomes frustrated. Instead, it is “just enough” to create an anticipation of the consummation of Logan and Tori’s physical relationship. And when it happens, the reader is ready for it. Cheering them on. Also, these characters are charming together. They were my favorite part of this bigger series because they peeled back layers of themselves for each other and the reader bit by bit, pulling us through their story.

“And in that moment, I felt our connection, the something that bound us beyond lust, love, or attraction. We were the same, he and I.”

I absolutely recommend this book. You will laugh, and sigh, and cry, and hope. This is everything you want in a great romance.

Saffron A. Kent – ARC Medicine Man

D8B99CC9-FC10-417B-9B9A-DE4FBE30871B

“They are right. Every day she lives, she fights, she wins.” Simon

When I finished reading a book the other day, I noticed that I had been gifted with an ARC of Saffron A. Kent’s newest book, Medicine Man. I was ecstatic as I hadn’t expected it; instead, I had been patiently waiting for its release. With all of the buzz she was creating about the book in her Saffron’s Purple Hearts FB group, I was intrigued with the premise of the book: the forbidden romance between a patient institutionalized in a mental health facility and one of its psychiatrists. Now, I don’t profess to have read many romance novels (maybe 300 to date), so my experience with different romance tropes might be new. However, I have not come across this type of forbidden romance, and I was hungry to check it out.

Medicine Man is the story of Willow, the patient in the mental health facility, and Simon Blackwood, a psychiatrist and son of the founding psychiatrist of the mental health facility. This story follows their individual struggles to overcome their pasts, their conditions, and the expectations of the people in their lives.  Intermeshed in these struggles is their romance, which, while front and center, to me, is actually secondary to their individual struggles. Only when they overcome their personal demons are they able to finally find true love with each other.

Characters: 💙💙💙💙💙

Simon and Willow are some of my most recent favorite characters. I often see women post in fan Facebook groups about “book boyfriends.” Simon comes pretty close to being my book boyfriend. Now, to be fair, he is broken. He makes choices for he and Willow that tank their relationship, but his tenderness and protectiveness of Willow makes the reader ache for him. His words spoken over her “illness” empower her and help her overcome her personal demons without solving them for her. This is the type of man who is every romance readers dream: handsome, sexy, empowering, and broken (at least those are my favorite qualities).

Willow’s journey cut my soul. Saffron A. Kent’s words placed in Willow’s mouth are profound as we feel the depth of Willow’s illness. Her ability to be the warrior that Simon calls her provides a strong female model for readers.  She’s young and should be ignorant to the world, but she isn’t. She becomes Simon’s savior from himself.

What I loved the most about these characters, though, is their ability to be a little “crazy” for each other. I don’t want to elaborate on it because I want readers to experience their crazy in the story.

Story: 💙💙💙💙💙

I was nervous going into the reading of the story. I struggle at times with the forbidden romance trope. As a professor myself, I cannot always connect with the professor-student forbidden romance (although after reading this book, I quickly gobbled Kent’s The Unrequited, and it’s my favorite professor-student romance EVER). I was worried that I would feel the same with this book. And I never did. The story is told so well that it seems natural, even, necessary, that Simon and Willow end up together. I think the reason it doesn’t seem strange or unnatural is the book’s story of depression. To me, that was the most profound part of this story that it became the part I loved the most. Witnessing Willow’s struggles, hearing her words about deliverance from her unhappiness, overwhelmed my emotions at times, and it made Simon and Willow’s relationship necessary. Without his insight, she would have always viewed  herself as broken and damaged: “But the thing that bothers me the most is that I was born with something more than blood in my veins. Something extra-terrestrial, alien, quite possibly blue-colored –hence the weird, un-Taylor color of my eyes. Something dark and shadowy, with long claw-like fingers. Something that has weighed me down all my life.” Their relationship becomes the impetus for her empowerment over her illness and his ability to forgive his father and stop living in the past. While seemingly forbidden, their story never feels wrong.

Sexiness Quotient: 💙💙💙💙💙

Because this exists in a mental institution, their first true intimate act takes quite a bit of time in the story to happen, so the sex part of this romance is a bit of a slow burn at first. After their first sexual encounter, it is a free for all, and it’s pretty hot. Nothing is better than sex with the possibility of being found out, so every time they connect, the sexual chemistry and tension is palpable. Given that Simon is quite a bit older than Willow, he takes on the role of teacher to Willow, but they become addicted to each other’s bodies, and it’s fantastic.

Style: 💙💙💙💙💙

Okay, so beyond the brilliance of her character development and masterful storytelling, this is the area where I think Saffron A. Kent is brilliant. I posted out on Facebook to her about my many highlights of her book as I was reading it. Her words are weighted and lovely and transcendent in composition. I am calling her the mistress of, what I’m calling, the punctuating simple sentence or fragment. When she creates these simple sentences and fragments, it adds weight to her characters’ thinking and actions. It is stunning to read these golden nuggets of language throughout a story.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I fell madly in love with this book. I began it on a Monday night after teaching two classes of college writing, and I finished it on a Tuesday evening. I simply could not put it down. Saffron A. Kent’s story breathes out understanding about the personal difficulties of living with depression. She gives Simon the words to heal Willow’s sense of herself as deficient. She gives Willow words of love to help Simon transcend his past. This story becomes more about personal healing and acceptance than its romance. When a story can move beyond a basic trope of forbidden love and offer a greater insight into a struggle of our society, then I think the writer allows the art to become something bigger than its most basic self.
