Books in the collection:

Loving Kalvinstandalone friends-to-lovers second-chance romance

I knew it would end in disaster, but I didn’t listen to reason. I didn’t care. Because I loved him so much.

Kalvin Kennedy ruled my heart.

Until he destroyed it.

Shattered it so completely that I became someone else. Someone I loathed. Someone who repeatedly lied to her loved ones.

So, I ran.

From him. From myself. Desperate to hide my new reality.

But I could only run so far.

Saving Bradstandalone enemies-to-lovers romance

I need to escape.

To put as much distance between me and that monster so I can start living my life.

Yet, even the vast Atlantic Ocean isn’t enough to sever the connection. To allow me to forget how he’s ruined me. His hold is more than just physical. He has a vise grip on my head and my heart, and I can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t function.

So, I do everything to blot it out.

Until he reappears in my life.

Brad McConaughey. So hot. So infuriating. So in love with my best friend.

Every word out of Brad’s mouth makes me want to throat punch him or kick him in the nuts.

But he makes me feel, and I hate him for it. A part of me might actually love him for it.

Seducing Kadenstandalone forbidden romance

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of falling in love. The all-consuming sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of love I swooned over in movies.

It didn’t take long for that fairytale notion to come crashing down around me. Now I’m trapped in a marriage I despise with no way out.

The only light in the dark is Kaden Kennedy—the one true love of my life. He doesn’t know he is, because I’m forced to love him from afar, condemned to toss and turn at night, crying over everything I want and all I can never have.

Seeing him day in, day out, destroys me, but there’s no other choice; I had to push him away to keep him safe.

Because if my husband ever finds out I’m in love with one of my students, I won’t be the only one in danger.

Forgiving Kevenstandalone second-chance romance

They say you never forget your first love, but I’m determined to prove Keven Kennedy is just a random boy from my past.

It’s not like I still think about him after all this time. Or daydream about how hot his kisses were and what it felt like to have his hands on my skin.

Nope, that’s not me. I’m in a happy place in my life. Engaged to a great man and finishing the last year of my photography degree.

But since I returned to Massachusetts, everything reminds me of the boy who ripped my heart to shreds. Especially when my fiancé’s constant business trips, and dwindling attention, raises old fears to the surface.

And then the unthinkable happens—Keven saunters back into my life, turning it upside down once more.

It’s ironic he thinks he’s protecting me when the only one I need protecting from is him.

Excerpt from Loving Kalvin (Kennedy Boys #4)

LANA

I change the bed, while Kal clears away the dirty clothes and the empty boxes. Then we get changed—sleep shorts and a tank for me and track shorts for Kal—and snuggle up in bed, watching a movie on his laptop. My head is resting on his bare chest, testing my willpower to the limit. Kal is all sharp angles, and defined muscles, and my hands start wandering without permission.

“Are you feeling me up?” I can hear the amusement in his voice.

No point denying it. Not when my fingers are currently exploring every dip and curve of his abs. “Yeah. Got a problem with it?”

He laughs lightly. “Hell no. Don’t stop.” His arm is firm around my waist, and, with his other hand, he plays with my hair. “Lana,” he whispers.

“Yeah,” I whisper back, looking up at him.

“I love you.”

Tears well in my eyes. “I love you too.”

I want this to be real. So, so much.

I wish there was no other secret between us.

No risk of this all falling apart.

Not when it feels so exquisite. So perfect. So right.

We’re on borrowed time and I’m clinging to it like a drowning woman clinging to a life belt.

I didn’t mean to see him naked–it was an accident.

It had to be, right?

Because Noah McCormick and I have never been anything more than friends. In all the years I’ve known him, he’s never once laid a finger on me. And even though he was a cute lifeguard at 16 and a hotter-than-hell sheriff’s deputy at 34, he’s always been that protective guy I could trust to keep his hands to himself. I never wanted to mess with that.

Until I walked in on him getting out of the shower and saw his hard, muscular body totally bare and dripping wet. At that moment I never wanted to mess with anything so badly in my entire life.

I should have covered my eyes. Said I was sorry. At the very least, I could have handed him a towel.

After all, I was only in town for a few days, and he was just doing me a favor by escorting me to my sister’s wedding. It wasn’t a real date.

But I didn’t apologize. And he didn’t cover up.

(Talk about a hot mess.)

After all those years of being just friends, suddenly we’re insatiable.

He’s made it clear he’s not interested in romance. Which is fine with me because

I’ve got a plane ticket back to my real life at the end of the week.

It’s all in fun…or is it?

Sawyer?” I said in disbelief.

Breaking into a huge grin, she started to run.

I was still standing there in shock when she barreled into me, throwing her arms around my neck. She smelled fucking fantastic. Feminine, sweet, delectable.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, trying to hug her back without getting sweat or paint on her. “I thought you didn’t get in until Thursday.”

“I changed my ticket.” She let go just enough to smile up at me impishly. “I’m glad to see you too.”

I laughed. “I’m glad to see you. You just surprised me is all.”

“That was my plan.” She stepped back, and I figured my odor was probably repulsing her.

“I stink, sorry. I went for a run earlier and I never showered. Then I painted the garage.”

“I never mind the smell of sweat. It means hard work.” She brightened. “Will you run tomorrow? I’d love to go with you.

“Sure. We can run tomorrow. I’m off again.”

“Great! Although I’m probably way out of shape.” She made a face. “My work schedule is so crazy, I don’t run as much as I used to.”

“You look great,” I told her. And it was true—she did look great. Maybe not quite as skinny as the last time I’d seen her, but the added curves looked good on her. My eyes wandered without my brain’s permission to her slightly fuller chest and rounder hips. Quickly, I attempted to look at her face again, but then my gaze lingered on her mouth. I remembered what it had looked like the other night in my fantasy as she’d wrapped her lips around my cock and moaned like it was the best thing she’d ever tasted.

My dick twitched beneath my running shorts, and I cleared my throat. “You’ve got a favorite murder? Is there something I need to know?”

She glanced down at her shirt and smiled. “It’s a podcast about true crime. I’m addicted.”

“Never heard of it.”

A sound of exasperation escaped her. “You live under a rock! I can’t believe you’re still not on social media.”

“Yes, you can.”

“Okay, I can, but it makes it really hard to stalk you.”

I shook my head. “People like you are exactly why I don’t want to be on social media.”

She hit me on the shoulder. “I’m kidding! I just want to keep up with your life. I miss you.”

“So come home more often. Talk to my face.”

She grinned. “I do like seeing your face. Want to go grab a beer? Maybe some food?”

“Sure.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Ellie Kay’s No Whisk No Reward ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

Is it possible that someone in Green Valley, Tennessee, the hometown of Penny Reid’s the Winston Brothers could dislike them? If you’ve read any of Penny Reid’s books set in this fictional town, about the only people who are not fans of the brothers are the Iron Wraiths. To a certain degree, they don’t really count as they exist on the periphery of the civilized community. As we find in Ellie Kay’s newest book, No Whisk No Reward, there is someone who detests the Winston Brothers. And his choices have placed him outside of this town’s community.

I need to be honest. I wish I could go to Green Valley and visit the Donner Bakery. I’m not one for sweets, yet there is something perpetually welcoming about this place that makes me think I could be friends with someone like Jennifer Sylvester-Winston. In reading Ellie Kay’s story, this feeling grew exponentially because this story, above anything else, shows the power of a community of women.

The story follows Sophie, a pastry chef, who is relocating to Boston from Washington state. After failing miserably on a national television baking competition, her former employer loses confidence in her ability to bake and create pastries, so she decides to make a change. On her road trip to Boston to work for her friend, her car becomes disabled in Green Valley. On her entry into town, she unexpectedly meets Joel Barnes, when she almost collides with his car. Asking for accommodations, Joel offers his rental for the night. When her car breaks down, she must rely on the help of the Winston brothers to fix her car. This also provides her an opportunity to work for Donner Bakery while she earns money to make her way to Boston. From the moment they meet, Joel and Sophie are drawn to each. However, Joel’s past and the circumstances of his present along with Sophie’s move to Boston seek to keep them apart. Can Joel resolve his problems? Can Sophie move past her failure and take advantage of a “do-over” on the show where she failed? Will Joel decide to follow Sophie to Boston? Will these two find their happy ending?

Green Valley is this idyllic place, even with the threat of the Iron Wraiths. Yes, there are people in this community who undermine the happiness of others. However, overall, everyone seems to find a place except Joel Barnes. The Winston Brothers have derailed his family’s auto repair business, and this causes an issue with finances. Before his death, Joel’s brother makes an impetuous deal with the Iron Wraiths that task his relationship with Joel and their future. After his death, Joel is left to honor the agreement, but it causes him to be exiled to a certain degree in Green Valley’s community. In his exile, Joel becomes a ghost of his former self. Without the fulfillment of his dream to leave Green Valley and travel, he loses himself. His risk would be forgoing the business of the Iron Wraiths and leaving town, but he struggles with honoring his family’s business.

Like Joel, Sophie is stuck in her sense of failure. Her life’s work as a pastry chef further complicates this, as Ellie Kay shows us, because the “chef” culture looks for failure. She comes to Green Valley feeling dejected and looking for the comfort of a job with her friend in Boston. She struggles to move beyond her failure on the television show, and it makes her look for safe choices. Enter Joel, Jennifer Sylvester-Winston, Tempest, and Joy to her life. And she’s once again reminded that risk is necessary. In fact, this is true for both Sophie and Joel. Kay’s characterization of Sophie and Joel illustrates our daily struggle to accept failure and keep moving forward. She’s suggesting that we cannot let our past define us; instead, we need to learn from them and challenge ourselves in the future. Through their relationship, we find Joel and Sophie challenging each other in this way. It’s the development of their relationship that makes Kay’s book so worthwhile. From one minute to the next, as Sophie and Joel struggle through their journeys, you laugh, you sigh, and you cry. When Sophie makes strides to help Joel, the story becomes angsty, and it hurts your heart. For me, that’s a plus. Feeling the emotional upheaval of the characters always makes for great storytelling, and Kay has that in spades in her book.

However, the gem of this book is the community of women in the Donner Bakery. From her beginning, Sophie is enveloped. She comes from an environment that is high stress with little positive feedback. In this bakery, the environment is still high stress, but the women who work there support each other. They don’t just encourage each other. They exhort, empower, and challenge each other. Beyond the beauty of Sophie and Joel’s romance, THIS is the part of Ellie Kay’s book that I loved the most. In our society, people can be generally terrible to each other especially in the realm of social media. Yet, women sometimes are the worst. No Whisk No Reward provides us with examples of women who feed the souls of other women, and it’s glorious. I thought the angst of Sophie and Joel’s relationship would be the height of my emotional upheaval. Instead, it was the moment when Sophie leaves for Boston and says goodbye to Tempest and Joy because it’s clear that these women love and care for each other. And that makes for the best of storytelling.

So, are you ready to take your own risk? If so, then you should read Ellie Kay’s No Whisk No Reward. Women empowering women and a heroic couple taking the ultimate risk together proffer a book that keeps us dreaming in Green Valley. Even if you are like Joel and detest the Winston Brothers, or if you’re like me and love the Donner Bakery, this book has a little treat for everyone.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Piper Sheldon’s My Bare Lady ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

One of my favorite movies of all time is My Fair Lady. I’m a HUGE musicals kind of girl, and Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison have a chemistry that just seems to work in a way that seems unexplainable. Plus, I’m a girl who loves a makeover story, especially one that changes both the hero and heroine. In her newest book, My Bare Lady, Piper Sheldon treats us to a spin on this Pygmalion story, and it’s everything you love about romance.

Suzie aka “Short Fuse Suze” is a stripper at the G-spot. She’s been a biker babe, associated in the past with the Iron Wraiths, the biker gang of Green Valley. Yet, Suzie is more than a stripper or a biker babe; she’s compassionate, protective, and intelligent. Unfortunately, those traits seem lost to her outward appearance. Enter Clifford aka Ford. Clifford is an adjunct professor at the University of Tennesse who is studying human behavior to assert that, given opportunities, people can be more than their past. As an engineering professor, he also moonlights as a property inspector. This job finds him at the G-Spot, inspecting renovations. He determines there are problems, and he cannot approve the plans. On leaving the strip club, he happens to see Suzie dance, and he is instantly attracted to her, but his staid and buttoned-up persona distances him from her. The owner of the G Spot is unhappy with Clifford’s refusal to sign off on his plans, and he decides to use Suzie to persuade Clifford to approve his plans. During a pre-arranged event, Clifford makes a bet with a wealthy local businessman for funding his research by asserting that he can change people’s perceptions of Suzie by giving her opportunities to improve. What Clifford fails to realize initially is the impact Suzie will have on changing him.

Piper Sheldon’s My Bare Lady takes the Pygmalion story and dials it up a notch. There is so much to this story beyond the changes of its hero and heroine. This story focuses on self-fulfilling prophecies as defining one’s life; it focuses on preconceived judgments based on one’s appearance; it’s about addiction; and it’s about the differences between the theories of academia vs. the application in the real world. There is so much headiness to Sheldon’s story that a lesson is learned with each turn of the page. She’s challenging us to consider privilege and its effect on one’s life. She’s reminding us that women are more than objects through her heroine, Suzie. And she does this in ways that are seamless to the story.

Intertwined in these messages is an irreverent romance between seemingly two different people. Except that they are more alike than different, we note as their romance develops.  Clifford grows into his new name, Ford (a moniker given to him by Suzie), as the story progresses. As his controlled personality loses its strength, he becomes so much more likable. From his appearance through to this research, he is so composed and almost robotic that he needs the messiness of Suzie to allow him freedom of personality. His journey, honestly, is my favorite party of My Bare Lady. It would be easy to offer that honor to Suzie, but she’s the heart of this book.

Suzie is every woman who has been told that she can’t be more, who has been diminished. She’s been marked figuratively (and sometimes literally) by men who don’t believe in her value. It begins with her father and ends with Occum, the strip club owner, and the other bikers. When you are told you nothing more than a pretty face, you live your life with that restriction. When Ford helps her see her value beyond her appearance, it’s magical. However, reading her vacillate between this truth and her previous understanding of herself can be disheartening at times. Yet, isn’t this the way of us? Don’t we undermine our sense of self based on other’s sense of us? Sheldon points us to this through the characterization of Suzie. It’s a reminder that we can be more, that we are not defined by our past, our looks, our skillset, etc. My heart ached so many times for Suzie, and I was thankful she finally found her happy ending.

There is a depth to Piper Sheldon’s My Bare Lady, one that runs deeper than its inspiration. Through the romance of Ford and Suzie, she admonishes us to consider our perceptions of others. Do we only see the surface value of those around us? Do we foster their growth, offering them opportunities to be more? What is society’s responsibility for providing opportunities to the lives of those born with very little? It’s not often that a book brings these social issues to the surface in the light-heartedness of romance. And trust me, the levity of romance is still here in the teasing of Suzie and Ford’s change of personality. But My Bare Lady is something more: it’s a representation of the marriage of social ideals and sweet, sexy fun. And it shouldn’t be missed.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Release Day: November 12, 2019

About the Book

Teddy King excels at many things. Playing hockey. Check. Scoring on and off the ice. Check. Being stupidly attractive … Double check.

Despite his demanding schedule, he still finds time to annoy me. I knew him way back when. Before he was the guy everyone wanted a piece of, he was just a rebellious college co-ed and one of my more energetic study partners.

Teddy’s no stranger to hard work … but the thing he wants most?

Is me.

Note: This high-heat standalone is chock-full of scorching banter and steamy good times. He’s a testosterone-dripping hockey player who wants a second chance. She’s a tough as nails attorney intent on making partner. Frienemies to lovers. No cliffhanger. Enjoy!

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Melanie Harlow’s Insatiable ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

As a romance reader, I tend to like most romance genres and tropes. Obviously, I have my favorites: enemies-to-lovers and forbidden. And I have some that I appreciate, but they sometimes leave me unsatisfied. The friends-to-lovers trope walks that fine line for me. It’s always strange that a man and woman who have been friends for years, even decades, would finally realize they have deeper feelings for each other beyond friendship. Yet, I know it happens, which makes this trope, one probably closest to real life.

Melanie Harlow’s Insatiable is this such story. Set in the Cloverleigh Farms world, Insatiable is the third book of this series. It follows the characters, Noah and Meg. Noah, a deputy sheriff, and Meg, a political strategist, have been friends since their teens. While they don’t spend every day in contact (Noah lives in their hometown in Michigan and Meg lives in DC), these two know that the other person is always available for them. There have been a few moments over the years where each was curious about a romantic connection with the other, but the priority of the friendship is more important. Meg returns home for her little sister’s wedding. She is somewhat disillusioned by life. She has recently broken up with a long-term boyfriend, her job has overwhelmed her life, and she’s searching for more, for a dragon slayer to fight for her. While in town for the wedding, she decides to meet up with Noah. Even though Noah has pushed his attraction to Meg into the recesses of his mind, it becomes more apparent this time. Likewise, Meg also feels a strong attraction to Noah. While Noah does feel connected to Meg, he makes it clear that he is not interested in a relationship. He believes his focus in life should be his family: his mother, his twin brother with cerebral palsy, and his sister. Given that Meg lives in DC, they agree to explore their intense attraction for the week that Meg is home. However, they agree that, after the week, they will return to their lives. Will Meg and Noah fall in love, or will this be strictly a “friends with benefits” arrangement for the week Meg is home?

Melanie Harlow’s Insatiable is equal parts sweet, sassy, and sensual. There is truly something for everyone in this story. Even if a reader isn’t a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope, there is more to this story beyond that trope. For one, Noah has created a life that is safe as a response to his guilt over his brother’s illness. He doesn’t believe he’s worthy of the benefits a marriage and children can bring him. He’s a good guy. He’s well-respected in the community; he’s compassionate and empathic; he takes wonderful care of this family; and he loves his dog, Renzo. Yet, he lives his life in denial, which makes his world very small. Similarly, Meg also struggles with creating a small world for herself. As a Type-A personality, she overworks. Her relationships fail because her need to be emotionally vulnerable in a relationship is difficult. She has a few friends in DC, but her job drives her life choices. Her hobbies are few, and she struggles to see more for herself. Both Meg and Noah as heroic types illustrate the need for us to break down our walls and allow ourselves to be vulnerable to love and all of its rewards. Harlow illustrates this through their storyline, obviously. But she makes these two characters, everyone. These are regular people struggling with the same issues that people like me or you struggle with each day. This story reads like my experience or your experience with some hot $exiness, some humor, and a wonderful happy ending. This book is meant to be a mirror to ourselves, I think.

I love the relationship between these two. Meg is honest and nurturing with Noah in ways that he fails to find in his past relationships. She accepts his life, and she offers him something that no one else has given him before: $exual experiences that match his needs. Honestly, Meg is THE best character in this book. She’s brave when Noah runs scared; she’s empathic when Noah needs an outlet for his anger; and she’s incredibly forgiving of Noah’s carelessness with her heart. On the other hand, while Noah is all the traits I noted in the paragraph above, he is ALSO the greatest source of frustration in this story. If you struggle with stubborn, short-sighted heroes, then you will NOT like Noah. It takes him much of the story to figure out his contradictions about his future. As a reader, that can be incredibly frustrating. However, it’s Harlow’s tool for the tension of this book. Without Noah, this book would be safe; it would be fairly vanilla. Instead, Noah is the impetus for both the $exiest and the most angsty parts of it. Honestly, he made my heart hurt for Meg and brought some tears to this reader’s eyes. That being said, he is also responsible for the swooniest moments too. Don’t give up on Noah. He will mend your heart in the end.

Finally, I think the true treasure of Harlow’s Insatiable is the return to Cloverleigh Farm. I have to admit that this is the first book I’ve read in the series. And once I’ve cleared my ARCs from my Kindle, I will be returning to the first two books in this series. I fell in love with the Sawyer women in this story. I love a story where women play front and center. It’s a very pro-woman book. Also, if you haven’t read a Melanie Harlow book before, please note that you can pick this book up today, read the story, and you would not have missed a thing. Harlow does a wonderful job of creating a romance that makes you fall for her Noah and Meg. Yes, I’d love to read Frannie’s story, along with Chloe’s story. However, missing their stories did not affect this story in the least. They merely added other opportunities to spend time in the idyllic world of Cloverleigh Farm.

What should you ultimately know about Melanie Harlow’s Insatiable? This is a rollercoaster of emotions. One minute, you will find yourself laughing with Noah and Meg as they banter back and forth with each other, an undercurrent of sexual innuendo shadowing it. The next minute, you’ll feel your blood pressure rise at their chemistry. And the next minute, you’ll grab for your tissue box as they struggle to find their future together. Yet, in the end, you’ll fall in love with this sweet, sexy, and sassy romance that seeks to show us that, regardless of our life situation, being loved is the only thing to make us truly feel whole.

In love and romance,

Professor A
