✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 3 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Elizabeth Hayley’s Misadventures with a Twin ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

I think any red-blooded male or female has held the fantasy of hooking up with twins. Maybe it isn’t a fully developed fantasy, but I imagine it finds purchase in the mist of our minds. There is also the idea of identical twins switching and wreaking havoc on the lives of those closest to them. To a certain degree, this twin phenomenon underlies Elizabeth Hayley’s newest books, Misadventures with a Twin

Zara attends her ten-year high school reunion. She recognizes the man at the bar as Corey, the guy she had a crush on in high school. After some flirting, they remove to her room to engage in adult activities. While “Corey” is taking care of her needs, she cries out his name, and the evening ends early. What Zara doesn’t realize is Corey isn’t really Corey; he is Corey’s identical twin, Colton. After their night together, Zara and “CJ” continue to “hook up” on various occasions, neither of them looking for a relationship. However, over time, Zara and CJ start to grow feelings for each other. Unfortunately, Zara doesn’t know that Colton is Corey or CJ. When he finally admits his lie, their future is placed in jeopardy. Will Zara be able to forgive Colton?

This is my first encounter with Elizabeth Hayley. In general, I enjoyed this romance. There is always something interesting about a twins storyline, although Corey’s role was fairly insignificant in this story. This isn’t a story about twin brothers and one woman, and it isn’t a story of Corey and Colton switching identities. Instead, Misadventures with a Twin is a story about honesty. Colton lies to Zara. What tends to be frustrating about this book is the length of his lie. He has months to remedy the situation, yet he (along with his brother) make excuses for hiding it. Quite frankly, I struggled with their reason. Even more, there were times when I was confused by Colton’s explanation of Zara knowing the differences between him and Corey.  I found this to be especially true at the beginning of the story. As the story progressed, I became frustrated with the lie.

Additionally, Zara and Colton’s chemistry seems forced. It took me most of the story to feel any emotional connection between the two of them. They read like hook up buddies, so when they begin to “catch feelings” for each other, it doesn’t have the emotional impact I was hoping for. There was a disconnect between the two of them until the end of the story.

For me, that is where the magic is in this book. There is a moment at the end between Colton and his father that almost brought tears to my eyes. For me, it was the second-best moment of the book. The best moment comes at the end of the romance in the weight of Zara and Colton’s final decision about their relationship. It is there that I finally believed that Zara and Colton are meant to be together. And that frustrates me. I am a reader who requires some emotional connection to the characters, whether this is achieved through humor or drama, I don’t care. And I didn’t feel that for Zara and Colton. In fact, I struggled with the idea that Zara, Corey, and Colton were almost thirty-somethings because they read much younger.

In reflecting on this book, I would say it’s a good read. It isn’t spectacular. For me, it didn’t knock my socks off, and I hate to say any of this because I know that stories are the babies of authors. Misadventures with a Twin is a sexy tale of two people who don’t know that they need love. Intertwined with that basic story is mistaken identity and some quirky characters who seek to tickle your funny bone. Would I recommend it? Yes. However, it wouldn’t be at the top of my Kindle Library.

Meet The Author
Elizabeth Hayley is actually “Elizabeth” and “Hayley,” two friends who love reading romance novels to obsessive levels. This mutual love prompted them to put their English degrees to good use by penning their own. They learned a ton about each other through the process, like how they clearly share a brain and have a persistent need to text each other constantly. They live with their husbands and kids in a Philadelphia suburb. Thankfully, their children are still too young to read.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Kendall Ryan’s Trying to Score, a Hot Jocks story ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have fallen hard for Kendall Ryan’s Hot Jocks series. This is a series of standalones that follow various players on a professional hockey team. Each book has presented a hot hockey player and some type of romantic trope: forbidden best friend’s sister and friends-to-lovers.

With her newest book, Trying to Score, Ryan offers the story of Teddy and Sara. Teddy and Sara meet in college, spend a semester hooking up, and go their separate ways after a summer apart. Unfortunately, during their time together, they make a $ex video. Teddy tells Sara that he deleted it, but he hides it in his cloud. This, unfortunately, comes back to cause them problems. Fast forward many years, Teddy and Sara are good friends, along with their other hockey player friends. Teddy has always held a bit of a torch for Sara, but the timing and pursuit of career have always been their issue. When a hacker emails Teddy threatening him with releasing their video, Teddy seeks Sara’s guidance in stopping the release of the video. Acting as his lawyer, she tries to remedy the situation; however, she makes no progress. Instead, the PR person for Teddy’s hockey team suggests that Sara and Teddy pretend to date in case the video is released. Teddy and Sara agree to this arrangement and realize fairly quickly that long ago feelings rise to the surface. Do Sara and Teddy have a future together or will pretending to date be their only future?

This romance is a second chance at love story. Teddy and Sara have remained friends, but long-dormant feelings arise again. In fact, in this story, they come back strong. I was fairly surprised by this story. With the first two books in the series, there was quite a bit of angst and tension between the heroes and heroines. In both of those books, my heart hurt for the characters as they struggled to find their futures together. However, Teddy and Sara’s story feels innocuous in comparison. Their potential trials are their pretend relationship and its place in reality, Teddy’s possible move to another team, and Sara’s potential for making partner. Yet, these moments never seem overwhelming or sad. After the first two books of this series stealing little pieces of my heart, I didn’t feel the same connection with these two, and I’ve seen Teddy and Sara’s chemistry all along. I was hoping for more from these two.

Instead, you should know that Teddy and Sara are equal parts sweet and sensual. Their story is an easier read than the first two books of the series. I appreciated Teddy more. In earlier books, he seemed commitment-phobic, but he seems more invested in their connection initially than Sara. He’s respectful and supportive of her, and he reads much different than the prior books. I liked Teddy, and I liked Sara. I just didn’t feel as much for Trying to Score as I did for the first two books.

Kendall Ryan has this way of offering us insightful stories of romance. You typically fall hard for her heroes and heroines, and I think Teddy and Sara’s story, Trying to Score, provides more dimension to this series. I will say that it isn’t my favorite of the three, but I would definitely recommend you read it, especially if you’re a Kendall Ryan fan like me.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan March’s The Fall of Legend ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

How do you know you’re reading a Meghan March romance?

  • A hot, broken, primal hero who lives in the gray area of morality
  • An intelligent, attractive heroine who saves the hero from himself
  • Plenty of plot twists and turns, moments of angst and heat meant to build your voracious appetite for story
  • A story that keeps you at the edge of your seat
  • A sensual, “fire on the page” chemistry between the hero and heroine
  • A cliffhanger that leaves you aching for more

And March’s newest book, the first of the Legend trilogy, The Fall of Legend, holds all these cards and more.

I love Scarlett. From her name to her style, she’s a heroine to emulate.  She wants a messy life. How many romance heroines are driven to achieve that? Typically, their stories are wrapped up with a neat bow. Instead, March creates Scarlett with layers. At surface level, she appears put together, beautiful, iconic. However, Scarlett’s depth lies in her want for more, to be more than society’s perceptions of her. From her business to her home to her friends, Scarlett is a real person trapped in the life of a socialite. This dichotomy coupled with “daddy issues” often drives her to perfection. Yet, March allows us to see her true depth through her response to Legend and her insistence on pursuing the messy in life. Honestly, Scarlett’s character is the essence of this story.

Additionally, I love that Gabriel can’t help himself around Scarlett. He exists under her spell. There is nothing better than an alpha male hero who loses his control. It generally leads to the fireworks of the story.  He’s caustic, a loner with a small group of friends because his past haunts him. This is a perfect storm for his undoing and his eventual renaissance in later books. And it will be glorious, but not quite yet. Something about Gabriel Legend gets under your skin, and he leaves a permanent mark.

Scarlet and Gabriel’s chemistry is palpable and electric. It jumps off the page like an electric current. And it’s clear from the beginning of the story. March uses this to create the tension of their romance. They struggle to be together, and the reader feels the profundity of their situation. To me, that’s fundamental to a romance where opposites attract. March could teach a master class in writing this type of chemistry because it belies all of her books. These two, Scarlett and Legend, are all need, want, and lust, and it is incredibly hot.

However, most important to this story, is its message that twines through Scarlett and Gabriel’s connection. It’s this message of living a messy life. On the outside, Scarlett’s life seems perfect, but it isn’t. She doesn’t bemoan that fact, though. Instead, she’s seeking after the “real” life. She recognizes the ability to complete this through Gabriel. It’s March’s reminder that the curated life on social media or in life doesn’t mean anything if we’re not “living” it fully. In our society and time, it’s an important message to consider. This message is the power that drives this particular story, and I cannot wait for its revelation and resolution in the next two books of the series.

This is what I know. You can count on Meghan March’s books to grab your heart, heat your blood, and keep you coming back for more. The Fall of Legend is this type of book. Just be ready to wait a bit for Scarlett and Gabriel Legend to find their happy ending. You won’t have to wait long, but you’ll be anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Theo Cruz, a New York man known for his family’s billion-dollar empire, Cruz Enterprises, has been indicted this afternoon in the Court of Public Opinion on charges of Bro-Code Conspiracy.

Chief counsel for the prosecution, Caplin Hawkins, spoke candidly about the accusation.

“Once thought of as a best friend to many—including myself—Theo Cruz has officially turned his back on human decency. He’s conniving and dishonest, and a habitual offender of Bro-Code Law 676. He’ll rue the day he forgot that you never—under any circumstances—get involved with your best friend’s little sister.”

Fact: I haven’t actually been arrested or indicted.

More important fact: I inadvertently messed up—big-time.

Two strangers in a foreign country, we said hello.

Hello turned into a kiss.

A kiss turned into a rendezvous.

And a rendezvous turned into more than I’d ever imagined.

But her unruly golden curls and beautiful body hid an important detail—She’s my mouthiest billionaire best friend’s forbidden little sister.

Fact: I knew not of my crimes.

More important fact: I know now, but even though I know I’m playing with fire, there’s no way I’m stopping. I can’t leave her alone.

Lena

Two hours and another two shots for Pippa later and she’s in full-on dance mode. Shaking her hips and tits like she owns the joint. It only took one intense shimmy during “Gonna Make You Sweat” to understand what she meant—her boobs, left braless, would absolutely be a lethal weapon. I’m pretty sure the sweat between them even vaporized into a misty Mel Gibson mirage, they shook so hard.

And not once has she wanted to stop for a break.

She’s in the running to be the next Energizer bunny, but my bladder is full, and I’m dehydrated. For the love of God, I need something to drink other than Mel-flavored sweat mist and gasoline.

Thankfully, when Pip spots Sophie and Frederick on the other side of the dance floor, she does some weird version of the robot, spins in their direction, and makes like the wind through the crowd while letting her arms trail behind her.

It’s so fucking strange, it’s hilarious, and I can’t help but laugh.

Sophie feels the same, covering her mouth comically as she spots Pippa. I wave my hand, hoping to get her attention, and by some miracle, she spots me through the strobing lights and writhing bodies.

I jerk my chin and swipe a hand across my chest before tapping the skin next to my eye and doing the walking symbol with my fingers. Sophie nods, interpreting my baseball-esque code, regardless of its lackluster delivery. If I were on the other end of things, I’d be waffling between second and third base right now, trying to figure out what to do.

“I’ve got her!” she whisper-yells toward me, and the weight of drunken-friend-motherhood lifts off me in a flash. I’m sure my friends with kids would tell me this is how they always feel when they actually make it to the bathroom.

I didn’t think it was a possibility for a female living on planet Earth, but when I make it to the toilets—as the Italians call them—the line is short and speedy. I’m standing at the bar again, waiting on a bartender to take my order in under five minutes.

Of course, the bar takes so long, I have to sit down on one of the stools to bide my time. And just like that, the timetable of the universe has been righted.

While I wait, I glance back toward the dance floor to check on Pip, the dancing queen—who is now showing off her twerking skills to a cute twentysomething guy. If I had to guess based on his appearance, I’d peg him as one of the locals. But for all I really know, he hails from the Jersey Shore.

Thankfully, Sophie and Frederick are sticking close to Pip’s side, and her dance partner of unknown origin isn’t getting too handsy.

All is well. I breathe a sigh of relief and turn back toward the bar to resume my quest for a drink and, like magic, lock eyes directly with a bartender.

Thank God!

He jerks his chin up to head my way, and I climb to stand on the rung of my barstool with glee.

But when he’s five steps away, his attention swings back to a point down the bar, and immediately, he diverts.

What the hell?

I glance down at my perky, tight-nippled breasts and frown. How in the hell did he see these fuckers and not come in for the landing?

Annoyed, I follow him with my gaze to what I’m sure must be a woman with three tits and an exposed pussy.

I pause. Stop. Go completely still.

Wow. That is definitely not a woman with freakish anatomy. In fact, that’s no woman at all.

Midnight-blue eyes, a little scruff on his strong jaw, and the kind of lips that I instinctually know will be good at kissing, the man who stole my bartender warrants more than a double take.

Hot damn.

He’s clad in a smart suit but no tie, and his collared shirt is loose at the neck but perfectly fitted around the tight, firm muscles of his chest. The suit is obviously tailored and screams of money, but I have a feeling not even gold-plating would be able to disguise the spectacular body he’s got underneath.

His face is serious—but God, even serious, he is handsome as fuck.

The urge to find out what he looks like when he smiles is both overwhelming and terrifying. I mean, how would I even quantify anything beyond perfection?

A shiver runs up my spine. I really want to see what this guy is all about.

I imagine if I could remember Pippa existed at this point, I’d try to thank her for insisting I celebrate our accomplishments by lifting the man ban for the night.

As it is, I’m not sure anyone but me and the hottie with the sparkling eyes are left on the planet.

When he finishes talking to what I can only assume is the bartender who abandoned me, he turns back toward the dance floor and rests his hip against the bar.

His still-serious eyes scan the joint, moving from the dance floor to the VIP section to the intimate booths scattered along the walls and then back to the line of the bar, all the way back to me.

My breath catches in my throat when he meets my curious gaze and pauses.

Yes, please.

Drink forgotten, I mouth the word “Hi” toward him, and the slight hint of a smile threatens to quirk up just one corner of his lips.

God, I want to see him smile.

He mouths “Hi” back before pulling the center of his bottom lip between his teeth and dragging it back out. One perfect dimple pokes out from his cheek.

Hell’s bells, that’s one dangerously sexy look…

Unconsciously, I lick my bottom lip, and without hesitation, he shoves away from his spot at the bar and closes the distance between us.

“Hi,” I repeat when he stops within hearing distance—and in this club, with this crowd and noise, that’s pretty fucking close.

With full lips, white teeth, and two dimples, he smiles the sexiest smile I’ve seen in my life at the single-syllable word. And as a bonus, I can see now that his sparkling eyes are midnight blue, like the deepest part of the ocean.

“Hi,” he responds, rounding out our freak cycle of hellos, and it’s instantly evident he’s an American like me.

“You should do that more.”

He raises a questioning brow, leaning just one hand into the lighted marble bar top behind me. It makes his size feel impressive, makes me feel enveloped. My whole body spasms, and I take a deep breath to control it. “Do what more?”

“Smile,” I clarify.

A soft but deep and raspy chuckle leaves his perfect, kissable mouth. “Who says I don’t?”

I reach up toward the skin between his brows and his gaze follows my hand skeptically, but he doesn’t back away. “This little, almost nonexistent line right here,” I say softly, running a finger across it.

His eyes search mine in the kind of hot and sexy way that makes me wonder if my panties are still there, but I do my best to keep my voice even as I explain further. “I bet you furrow your brow all the time.”

He leans closer to me, and my fingers slide into the lush, dark locks of his hair on accident. “Is that right?”

“Uh-huh,” I answer simply, unable to form words until my hand finds its way back to the safe space of my lap. It’s purely circumstantial that my fingers graze his cheek and then his neck along the way. I clear my throat and look up to meet his eyes again. “I mean, here you are, in a club, at a bar with beautiful women all around you, and until you came over here, I couldn’t tell if you were having a good time at all.”

He laughs a little and then asks, “You know what’s funny?”

Completely oblivious to the answer but equally eager to find out, I shake my head.

“Neither could I.”

“And now?” I challenge with one inquisitive eyebrow.

“Now, I definitely am.”

I smile then, allowing a cascade of goose bumps to cover my arms from my shoulders to my fingertips.

Goddamn. He’s trouble, and I like it. In fact, I like it way too much.

“Well, in that case…” I pause and bite down on my bottom lip. “Since you stole my bartender, I think it’s only fair that you buy me a drink.”

He searches my eyes, a small smile once again lighting his own. “Stole your bartender?”

“Yep. Plucked him right from my braless grasp.”

He laughs again, shaking his head and fighting like hell not to look down. I’m immediately impressed by his level of self-control. Nine out of ten of the men I’ve been with in the past would have focused in on my buzzword and failed to look away from it for the rest of the night.

But not this guy. He’s interested—I can tell by the way his pupils have dilated—but for now, he’s content to focus on my eyes.

Irony at its finest, as that simple behavior actually increases his chances of seeing my nipples later.

“Okay, then. I guess I owe you one. What’s your poison?” That handsome grin of his grows wider, and I swear to God, I can feel it all the way to my damn toes.

Tell him gin and tonic because it will taste good when you get him to kiss you later, my horny, sex-deprived subconscious instructs.

The other side of my brain—the rational side—suggests something low in alcohol content—something that promotes good decisions.

I think it over for a brief moment, scanning the features of his too-handsome face and landing on his luscious smirking lips once again.

The answer pours out of me like a benediction. “Gin and tonic, please.”

“Wow, he can dance,” I observed.

I gasped when Wyatt’s hand on my waist slid up my side then up the underside of my arm to take my hand from his shoulder and link our fingers together. It was just like in Dirty Dancing, except I was facing him instead of away like in the movie. His grin grew a little bit wicked right before he used both of my hands to turn me. His front was now at my back with our arms crossed in front of us.

I felt his warm, hard body behind mine and I felt…way too much. Tingles covered every square inch of me. The air felt different against my skin; I was burning up.

His chin dipped low to rest on my shoulder. “Are you okay?” he whispered into my ear. His breath ruffled the hair against my neck, and I shivered.

“Yes,” I whispered. Then I nodded in case he didn’t hear me. I felt his stubbled jaw graze the side of my face and I began to experience heretofore unknown feelings. My perception of what was possible for my life shifted. My brain had disengaged, and I floated along on pure sensation.

We rocked side to side like that—closer than I’d ever been to anyone in my life. His chest rose and fell against my back as his arms tightened around me and he sighed against my hair. The last of my conscious thoughts dissolved and I succumbed to pure feeling. His body moving against mine became my world. His hands in mine kept me tethered, lest I float away on this cloud of sensation that was gradually becoming overwhelming.

I had never felt anything like this. I never even thought feelings like this were possible in real life. In romance novels, sure. But to feel such contentment laced with giddiness right now was something I had not expected. Before I could succumb to the spreading tingles and dwindling brain power and embarrass myself, he raised our arms up high and twirled me around and around underneath them. I giggled and squealed. Apparently, I was that girl—a squealy, laughing, girly girl. But maybe we were all that girl in the right circumstance.

He was right. I did not need to know how to slow dance when I was with him. We danced close; so close his knee was between my legs. I delighted at the feel of his soft, warm skin when he placed one of my hands on the back of his neck. He moved his free hand low on my waist, hooking his thumb in my belt loop to guide me in slow, small circles over our spot on the dance floor, then back and forth using his hands to push me out and pull me back into his body. He coaxed me where I needed to go. I felt weightless and graceful.

The whole bar and everyone in it disappeared until it was just us dancing together, bathed in the moonlight filtering in through the high windows, and the little lights—so much like stars—illuminating the dance floor with their tiny rays. As the song ended, he spun me out and then back up against his body to dip me low with his arm wrapped tight around my waist. He grinned down at me with those gorgeous lips and beautiful chocolate brown eyes and I—I would never forget this moment—not ever.

Books in the collection:

Loving Kalvinstandalone friends-to-lovers second-chance romance

I knew it would end in disaster, but I didn’t listen to reason. I didn’t care. Because I loved him so much.

Kalvin Kennedy ruled my heart.

Until he destroyed it.

Shattered it so completely that I became someone else. Someone I loathed. Someone who repeatedly lied to her loved ones.

So, I ran.

From him. From myself. Desperate to hide my new reality.

But I could only run so far.

Saving Bradstandalone enemies-to-lovers romance

I need to escape.

To put as much distance between me and that monster so I can start living my life.

Yet, even the vast Atlantic Ocean isn’t enough to sever the connection. To allow me to forget how he’s ruined me. His hold is more than just physical. He has a vise grip on my head and my heart, and I can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t function.

So, I do everything to blot it out.

Until he reappears in my life.

Brad McConaughey. So hot. So infuriating. So in love with my best friend.

Every word out of Brad’s mouth makes me want to throat punch him or kick him in the nuts.

But he makes me feel, and I hate him for it. A part of me might actually love him for it.

Seducing Kadenstandalone forbidden romance

When I was a little girl, I dreamed of falling in love. The all-consuming sweep-you-off-your-feet kind of love I swooned over in movies.

It didn’t take long for that fairytale notion to come crashing down around me. Now I’m trapped in a marriage I despise with no way out.

The only light in the dark is Kaden Kennedy—the one true love of my life. He doesn’t know he is, because I’m forced to love him from afar, condemned to toss and turn at night, crying over everything I want and all I can never have.

Seeing him day in, day out, destroys me, but there’s no other choice; I had to push him away to keep him safe.

Because if my husband ever finds out I’m in love with one of my students, I won’t be the only one in danger.

Forgiving Kevenstandalone second-chance romance

They say you never forget your first love, but I’m determined to prove Keven Kennedy is just a random boy from my past.

It’s not like I still think about him after all this time. Or daydream about how hot his kisses were and what it felt like to have his hands on my skin.

Nope, that’s not me. I’m in a happy place in my life. Engaged to a great man and finishing the last year of my photography degree.

But since I returned to Massachusetts, everything reminds me of the boy who ripped my heart to shreds. Especially when my fiancé’s constant business trips, and dwindling attention, raises old fears to the surface.

And then the unthinkable happens—Keven saunters back into my life, turning it upside down once more.

It’s ironic he thinks he’s protecting me when the only one I need protecting from is him.

Excerpt from Loving Kalvin (Kennedy Boys #4)

LANA

I change the bed, while Kal clears away the dirty clothes and the empty boxes. Then we get changed—sleep shorts and a tank for me and track shorts for Kal—and snuggle up in bed, watching a movie on his laptop. My head is resting on his bare chest, testing my willpower to the limit. Kal is all sharp angles, and defined muscles, and my hands start wandering without permission.

“Are you feeling me up?” I can hear the amusement in his voice.

No point denying it. Not when my fingers are currently exploring every dip and curve of his abs. “Yeah. Got a problem with it?”

He laughs lightly. “Hell no. Don’t stop.” His arm is firm around my waist, and, with his other hand, he plays with my hair. “Lana,” he whispers.

“Yeah,” I whisper back, looking up at him.

“I love you.”

Tears well in my eyes. “I love you too.”

I want this to be real. So, so much.

I wish there was no other secret between us.

No risk of this all falling apart.

Not when it feels so exquisite. So perfect. So right.

We’re on borrowed time and I’m clinging to it like a drowning woman clinging to a life belt.
