“I have an idea.” He says it slowly, like he’s trying to reason with a small, frightened animal and doesn’t want to scare it away.

“I’m not gonna like this, am I?”

He laughs. “I’m hoping that you will if you hear me out.”

I take a deep breath. “Okay, I’m listening.” There may be a nervous ringing in my ears, but I can hear him over that.

“You know that film I’ve been working on forever?”

A Robin Hood-esque heist movie that’s been his creative baby for almost as long as I’ve known him? “Yes.”

“I have the chance to get some arial shots for it this weekend,” he explains. “You know my friend, Danny? The one with the helicopter business in Vegas?”

I nod. “Yeah.”

“He has a slot open on Friday night, and he offered to take me up so I can film. I’m flying to Vegas Friday morning so I can take him up on the offer.”

“That’s great,” I say, squeezing his hand. “But how does it involve me?”

The question hangs in the air as he stares at me meaningfully. “I want you to come with me.”

“No,” I say reflexively.

“Why not?”

“I’m not going to Vegas.”

“That’s not an answer. You’ll be done with the commercial by then, and our next project doesn’t start until next week. You haven’t been out of LA in a hundred years, Ken. It’s time.”

I playfully kick him in the shin. “It’s only been, like, a year. Maybe two.”

Yeah, okay. Still not great.

“It’ll be fun,” he says, really putting on the full-court press to sell me on this. “We’ll fly in and spend the night, have dinner and gamble a little. I’ll pay for the plane ticket.”

I love a night of debauchery as much as anyone, and I’m having a harder time saying no than I thought I would.

“Jordan…”

“You have an editor’s eye,” he argues. “It’ll be nice to have someone there to tell me what to shoot so I’ll have the best final product.”

Yes, this much is true.

“Please,” he says. He’s gone full puppy-dog eyes and I can never say no to those.

“No,” I reply, but it’s weak. A slight breeze could knock it over.

He reaches in his pocket and pulls out those dice. “You roll an odd, you come home with me. Even? You can edit all weekend and I won’t say a thing.”

I grab a die and inspect it to make sure it actually has evens and odds.

I’ve never let dice make a decision for me. The prospect is oddly freeing.

I start to roll, but he gently grabs my wrist and pulls my hand to his mouth, giving it a quick kiss.

“For good luck,” he says with a playful wink.

I roll my eyes, trying not to think too hard about how soft his lips are.

“Good luck for you or good luck for me?”

A full-on grin. “For me, of course.”

I toss the die on the hood of the car. I come up with a three.

“Better start packing,” he says, looking like he just hit the jackpot.

Lilac by B.B. Reid is now live!

Read my 4 1/2 ⭐️ review HERE.

From bestselling author B.B. Reid comes an unconventional romance and complete standalone.

I, Braxton Fawn, am the luckiest girl alive.
Or so the world keeps telling me.
Every so often, gods walk the earth. This time they came as musicians. When Bound loses its lead guitarist, yours truly is chosen to fill his shoes. From dive bars to the big stage, my instant claim to fame is nothing short of a fairytale. The only problem?
My new bandmates.
Jaded, gorgeous, and ridiculously talented–they’re determined to turn my dream into a nightmare. It’s no secret I wasn’t their first choice. I wasn’t even their last. The label wants a new image, Bound wants me gone, but I’ve got my own agenda.
To succeed I have to survive a world tour, public scrutiny, and idols turned enemies. But the biggest threat of all isn’t a meticulous frontman, a narcissistic bassist, and a drummer with too many secrets.
It’s me.
Somehow, I must resist the temptation of Houston Morrow, Loren James, and Jericho Noble.

Excerpt

“Be my girlfriend, Braxton Fawn.”

My head knew what to say. My heart was in my throat. I knew it was coming, and somehow, I was still unprepared. I wanted to say yes. I felt it on my tongue, overwhelmed by green apples. All I had to do was shut my mind away, and I’d be his. There was only one problem.

He was asking too much.

I couldn’t pretend his friends weren’t chasing me too.

I wanted them all equally, but I craved them for different reasons. Houston challenged me, Loren worshiped me, and Rich made me feel like I was worthy of redemption.

I didn’t want to give that up.

This tour would end, but the wreckage they will have left of my heart would be permanent. There was only one way I could survive. One way no one got hurt, and…it was impossible. Almost as hopeless as choosing.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karla Sorensen’s Floored, the third book of her Ward Sisters’ series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Hyper rationalism focuses on all things based on logic. Oftentimes, hyper-rationalists disregard the power of the arts to connect to the spirit. For me, good writing has always produced emotions that remind me of my humanity, therefore, indicating that I could never ascribe to the world of hyper rationalism. Good writing reflects our humanity, magnifying our positives and our negatives. There are certain truths to be self-evident about Karla Sorensen. Most importantly, she has her finger on the pulse of romance readers in that she can draw that mirror and craft stories that remind us of the gravity of living. In her newest book, Floored, she once again illustrates her gift of character-driven stories through the journey of Jude and Lia.

What began in The Marriage Effect, continues in Floored, the third book of her Ward Sisters’ series. I can tell you that this book has as much heart as Focused and Faked. I can tell you that it has the typical steam level as her other books, which, for me, is a 2.5 to a 3. I can tell you that the plotting of the story is streamlined in such a way that you easily gobble this book in one sitting. There are never any struggles through Sorensen’s books, meaning that her prose and her storytelling draw you in and keep you engaged. All of the aspects we love about Sorensen’s books are found in Floored

What I want to focus on in this review, however, is the level of characterization found in this story that bowls you over. There are two lessons to be learned from this book: (1) that the past should not define your present and future, and (2) that family is THE most important part of living. I want to focus on the second message of this book because, for me, it magnifies Sorensen’s craftsmanship. You see, this story began in The Marriage Effect. It is there where the Ward Sisters along with Logan and Paige illustrate the cohesion of building a foundation of intimacy between family members. In Focused, Faked, and now Floored, the consequence of Logan and Paige protecting that foundation undergird the stories of the Ward women. So much so, that Sorensen’s heroes depict the antithesis to the Ward family. We learn from the Wards that familial intimacy is created with vulnerability, transparency, trust that the other people have your best intention, and acceptance. The cohesion of these traits is love. It coats each of them like a protective layer. In Floored, Lia notes it as a team or a “gang.” Yet, what Sorensen does so deftly through her heroes in this series is to show how special the Ward family is through the broken families of her heroes in these stories. We see the ultimate antithesis with Jude’s family, and it suggests that Sorensen knows that families are special whether we are born into them or construct them through our own choices. As Jude and Lia undergo their journey, we can use the Ward family as a measure. Lia and Jude are intimate, but in comparison to the Ward family, they lack intimacy in their relationship. And it’s there where a grown-up Lia must make choices. Besides crafting a “healthy” family in the Wards, Sorensen, through her characterization of Lia, shows us what it means to set healthy boundaries for your relationships. While boundaries can be emotionally painful, as we see developed throughout this story, we also see the fruit of it in her characters’ lives. Again, while this is all culled through the scope of a romance story, we can still learn these truths in a way that feels reflective of our nature. To me, that is the power of Sorensen’s storytelling.

Floored speaks through its quiet moments, making my heart soft, and it speaks through its loud ones, forcing my heart to float to my throat. Jude’s particular story of the past as a harbinger of his present and future is a profound one, and the care that Sorensen takes in crafting his shift feels important. In fact, it makes for some of the most romantic parts of this book.

But, for me, that isn’t the best part of Karla Sorensen’s Floored. For me, the best part of this book is the Ward family. My older mother, who has become a devoted Sorensen fan like me, asked me if I have a favorite book of the series, and while The Marriage Effect isn’t officially a part of the Ward Sisters’ series, it is still my favorite. I adore the girls, but my heart will always belong to Logan because even in his struggles, he crafted a family and a home for his sisters. And that foundation has been elemental in reminding Sorensen’s readers that our true family is the people who ultimately love us in our good times and our bad and accept us no matter what.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 Karla Sorensen has done it again with her newest book, Floored. Jude and Lia will steal your heart. It is out NOW. Run and grab it quick. ✍🏻

Title: Floored

Author: Karla Sorensen
Genre: Sports Romance
Release Date: December 9, 2020
Cover Design: Najla Qamber Designs

If you’ve ever had a steamy one-night stand with a British football player and then find yourself pregnant with his baby, you know how Lia Ward feels.
To be fair, Lia didn’t know who Jude McAllister was when they met.
Studying abroad for her master’s program, all she knows is that she’s a little lonely and he’s very charming, even as they have an epically sexy argument about which type of football is superior.
In Jude’s mind, shagging the feisty American girl is exactly what he needs. He’s been fighting the clock of his long-standing football career and the younger players primed to take his position. Proving that he can feel like his old self again—something he’s been trying to do with everyone in his life—should be easier after blowing off steam with Lia.
But oh baby, when a plus sign pops up on Lia’s pregnancy test, that ‘one night’ becomes a whole lot more.
Now Lia and Jude have to navigate their impossible-to-ignore chemistry, and prepare for the parenting game, something neither of them know how to play.

“All the English countryside stars for this awesomeness. It’s getting one of my rare 6 stars… I’ve read over 400 books this year and have only given 8 x 6 stars so that tells you just how much I loved this book!!” – Claypot Reads

“Karla Sorensen nailed the angsty and steamy feels once again in Floored. This unique sports romance was full of intense emotions and all consuming romance goodness. She never fails to bring out the best and the worst in me with her brilliant writing.” (PP’s Bookshelf)

“Karla Sorensen delivers on all the things I love the best: the chemistry, the banter, the sweet steady burn that holds my heart in thrall and keeps my greedy little reader heart hungry for more. Floored delivered on all those things and more!” (Jennifer, Goodreads Review)

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Corinne Michaels’s Stay for Me, the final book of the Arrowood Brothers’ series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

It’s always surprising that when you read a book you find something that speaks to you. Two different readers can read the same text and find different truths within the same book. That’s the exciting part of reading; it’s a place where the reader and author meet and create meaning together. The last book of Corinne Michaels’s series, The Arrowood Brothers, Stay for Me is a reminder of this fact. I could focus on the fact that, for me, Jacob is my favorite. I could note that, for me, this book has a heroine who feels more broken than the hero unlike the other three books in Michaels’s series. I could discuss the beautifully wrought journey that Michaels has created for Brenna and Jacob. But what I think this book does is illustrate the power of the matriarchy, the profound effect that a mother can inspire in her children (for this series, her sons) that, with the right love, her effect can blossom. As I’ve read all four books in this series, that is the final thought I have as I think about Stay for Me

In this final book, we meet Brenna, a widow who is left to raise her two children along while starting anew in a new town. She has settled in Sugarloaf where her in-laws live, and it is there where she meets Jacob Arrowood, the film star. Brenna’s son, Sebastian, is a devoted fan of Jacob’s, and Jacob’s sister-in-law, Ellie, makes the suggestion that Jacob reach out to Sebastian to help him through the family’s difficult time. From their first meeting, Brenna and Jacob are drawn to each other; they are electric. However, Jacob is intent on leaving Sugarloaf at the end of his six-month stint, complicating any relationship with Brenna. Unfortunately, they are drawn to each other and they enter an agreement to keep it casual until he leaves. That is their only option. Or is it?

What I have adored the most in this series, and by extension, Stay for Me, is the Arrowood Brother’s connection to their mother and each other. I know I”m supposed to love the romances (and I do). Most significant to me has been the way in which their mother saw what the guys call their “fatal flaw” and crafted a life message for each of them. That is powerful as a tool to mitigate the trauma of their father, the patriarchy of sorts. In a way, it’s a nod from Michaels as to the power of motherly love as a way to heal the hurts of the past. The vehicle to that realization is the love of a soulmate. There is so much healing love through the specter of womanhood in this book that it, quite frankly, ameliorates the overbearing masculinity of their father’s influence. You cannot get more pro-woman than The Arrowood Brothers series, and yet, Michaels brilliantly packages it up in stories that tug at your heart-strings.

With Stay for Me, Corinne Michaels pours in emotional blow after emotional blow but she couches it with a deep and abiding love between Jacob and Brenna. I love that Jacob’s epiphany comes sooner than his brothers’. I love that Brenna’s fear is the cause of their potential undoing because it allows for Jacob to be truly heroic in a way that maybe only his brother Sean is. And I love that Corinne Michaels writes their story (and the first three in the series) in a way that invests us in them. You feel and believe that this group of brothers could be your friends.

If you haven’t yet read Corinne Michaels’s The Arrowood Brothers series, run and grab them. This last book, Stay for Me, was my favorite of the four because the hope is heavy with this one, and the way that Jacob loves Brenna is the love of a lifetime.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Rebecca Jenshak’s The Pass ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

I have loved Rebecca Jenshak’s Valley University romances. While she seemingly completed it with Nathan’s story, The Fake, thankfully, she came back with a best friends-to-lovers story in her newest book, The Pass. And I’ve never been so relieved to go back to Valley for this story.

What I love most about Jenshak’s brand of romance is its relatability. And The Pass has more of this in the story of Tanner and his best friend, Sydney. We find out early in the story that there is deep chemistry between these two; however, miscues and misunderstandings end with Tanner and Sydney as best friends. Two years later, they find themselves at Tanner’s family’s lake house, and their chemistry becomes undeniable. They can no longer look away from all of the traits that they find so attractive in each other. As the story progresses, they explore this new relationship, and you’ll have to read The Pass to find out their ending (not too shocking…it will be a happy one).

What is lovely about this story is its capacity to make us believe that Tanner and Sydney are “meant to be.” That the former ease of their friendship actually does translate into a relationship because the best romances are grounded in a deep abiding familiarity with each other. I love that Jenshak explores this in The Pass. Now, it isn’t without drama in the form of outside influences, but there is a steadfastness to this story that feels uncomplicated and like a warm blanket just out of the dryer on a cold day. There are definitely fireworks between Tanner and Sydney, and Jenshak carefully builds it to a fever pitch before indulging it. She has carefully plotted their story that compels you further into it. There are simply so many great parts of this book that draw you in and make for a perfect afternoon read.

There is a safety in a Rebecca Jenshak romance, a knowledge that her heroes and heroines will endure anything to find a happy ending with each other. Add to that a sprinkling of sports romance and a veritable feast of chemistry, and you have a story such as The Pass. If you are a sports romance-aholic like myself, then you should definitely read this book.

In love and romance,

Professor A

She’s the girl who might be worth staying for.

Stay For Me by Corinne Michaels is now live!

From New York Times Bestselling author Corinne Michaels comes the final poignant love story in the Arrowood Brothers Series.

Hollywood taught me everything I know about relationships–except how to be in one. As an actor, I became an expert at faking it. Faking that I wasn’t affected by my childhood. Faking that I was okay. Faking that I knew how to save the day, the girl, the whole damn world.

But I’ve always known the truth–I’m no one’s hero.

Until I’m forced to move back to Sugarloaf for six months, and Brenna Allen offers me a chance to prove otherwise. She’s everything I never knew I wanted, but can’t have. Her broken heart, perfect face, and adorable children turn my world upside down. Instead of preparing for my next leading role, I’m directing a middle school play.

All to make her smile.

The more time I spend here, the more I want to stay. Build a life in this town that I swore I’d leave–for her.

But when the world comes crashing down around us, I’m forced to decide if staying for her is the right choice or if leaving is better for the woman I love.

I’ve been in love with her for two years.

The first time around I screwed things up. I hesitated and the moment was gone.

I passed when I shouldn’t have.

Not a total loss. I gained a best friend instead of whatever we might have been.

Sydney is hands down the best thing that’s ever happened to me, and I’ll do anything to keep her in my life. Even bury my feelings deep inside.

But one hot summer together at the lake filled with lots of teeny-tiny bikinis and I’m ready to risk it all for a second chance.

It’s time to take my shot.
