✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: B.B. Reid’s Lilac ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

“Instead, they served as a reminder that love wasn’t meant to be a pristine affair. It was meant to be messy and meant to hurt, but it would always mend if it’s true…”

B.B. Reid’s Lilac is an epic, erotic rollercoaster ride of rockstar romance with the highest zeniths and precarious plunges. Every turn of the page feels like a one-two punch to the gut, leaving you feeling battered yet satiated at its end. At the conclusion of Lilac, you feel victorious having survived Braxton, Houston, Loren, and Jericho’s battle for love.

Nothing in Lilac feels safe. Reid has taken this maelstrom of actions and emotions and woven them into an intricate and overwhelming story that makes you feel as though you’ve lived a thousand lives before her book’s end. All the words hold you in their thrall as Braxton, Houston, Loren, and Jericho, the band members of Bound, determine their path and its future. Honestly, every time I thought there would be a moment of quiet, Reid whips them into a hurricane of destruction. The emotional pummeling you take at her hands feels necessary to understanding the journey of her characters. There are so many plot points to Lilac that there were times I was worried that she wouldn’t resolve them. However, in true Reid form, she never leaves a story idea behind, and she weaves them carefully together to its end.

I love the chance that Reid took with Lilac. She claims this is her first reverse harem story. Yet, she does something that is often missing in other reverse harem books. Oftentimes, those books are focused on the eroticism of that arrangement, not the story, and they can often fall flat, becoming more smut than character development. That isn’t the case with Lilac. Yes, all of the characters struggle with impulse control at the hands of their attraction to each other. However, Reid uses the physicality of her book to underscore the more complex emotional feelings between her characters. Sometimes, it’s a means to remedy conflict while other times it becomes an expression of their love. Above all of that, though, lies the journeys of her individual characters, and each of them struggles with a past that challenges them in the present. Without the past breaking parts of themselves, these four wouldn’t feel “bound” as Reid shows us clearly in her story.

As the story goes, there is a constant tension between them. However, that tension changes as the story progresses. Initially, the tension is created through an almost “bully romance” aspect to the story, as Braxton struggles for acceptance into the group. Midway through the romance, the struggle becomes more internal in nature and more of the secrets are divulged. This is where the fight of the story assaults you over and over again. The visceral tension of Lilac feels necessary, though, because this type of relationship shouldn’t work within the standards of “regular” society, and it feels like Reid illustrates that through the stress and strain of its development.

Finally, there is a character for everyone in this book If you love a heroine with a “pair” bigger than the men in this story, then you will adore Braxton. She is self-possessed and willing to stand up for herself. There are times when you want to shake her, but you understand quickly that the resiliency gained from her past struggles informs her sometimes single-minded way of handling her feelings. Houston is similar to Braxton, and honestly, for me, his story is the most underdeveloped. We learn his secrets fairly late in the book, and I think I would have liked to understand them sooner. I understand why Reid reveals them when she does, but when you read it, it feels ancillary to the story. For me, Loren and Jericho (Rich) have the most development for her male characters. You understand their motives, and they are so different from each other. Loren is the group’s princess and some of its levity. Jericho is its heart. I believe that Reid wants us to connect with Jericho the most because his past plays a large part in the book. As I stated earlier, each of these characters is a piece of a larger pie, and the story isn’t complete without all of them. That Reid crafts that truth so deftly using the reverse harem trope is exciting because that level of character development can oftentimes be lacking in other reverse harem stories.

It is easy to find yourself lost in the pages of B.B. Reid’s Lilac. The story overwhelms you and causes you to question the messiness of love. However, as Braxton realizes, we find our home in those we love, and once we find it, we hold on to it no matter its compilation and complication. The grittiness of Reid’s When Rivals Play series is still here in Lilac, and it makes you realize quickly that this is a mainstay of a B.B. Reid romance. What that does is illustrate that love is messy, but the journey forward is always right if you allow love to guide you. Sooo…get ready for your wallop in Lilac

“‘We get to define what true love is for ourselves. No one is entitled to do it for you. Once she’s mine, I’d never hurt her, neglect her, or let her forget that she’s the axis on which I spin. I can do the same with my best friends hanging around. We were already family, Lo. We built a career together. We share a house…We don’t even have separate bank accounts. What’s mine has always been yours. This world is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, and the people in it would rather you be miserable as long as they’re comfortable. Why not carve out our own piece and be free to love how we choose?’”

In love and romance,

Professor A

Excerpt

River

“Why is the elevator so slow?” she mutters.

“Tell me three things you’re grateful for,” I say.

She does a double take. “Is this where I’m like your…pet project? Don’t feel sorry for me.”

Rainbow, sorry is the last thing I feel for you.

I want you under me.

Deep and hard.

“How are things with Donovan?” I ask.

Her throat bobs. “I-I can’t talk to you about him. I mean, yeah, um, it…doesn’t feel right, you know, to him.”

Right. He’s her boyfriend and my frat brother.

The door opens and she slips out, her arm brushing against my chest. I follow, sucking down the electricity between us.

She blows out a breath. “I know what this is, why you’re being nice to me—”

“Yeah? Tell me, because I can’t figure it out,” I snap, annoyed she won’t open up while the other side is pissed at myself for asking. “Trust me, I wish I didn’t…” I stop, my jaw clenching.

She stops at the door to class and faces me. “Your paper. I’m sorry I can’t help you, I really am. I love helping others, but I don’t think it’s a good idea for us…” She bites her lip, her gaze avoiding mine. “There’s something about you and me—” She halts and looks down at her feet. “Anyway, I know a few students who tutor athletes. Let me give you their names—”

“No one but you, Anastasia.”

“What? Why?”

Instinct takes over and I back her against the wall, towering over her. I tilt her chin up, and she doesn’t speak or move, just breathing fast, as my hand slides around to her nape. A hum of heat goes through my body as my hands tangle in her hair.

“River…what…” Pink rises on her cheeks as her lashes flutter.

Every time, I’m pushing a little more, the dark side of me winning. Monday. Her apartment. Now.

I could kiss her right now, but it’s wrong, immensely, and I’m being bad, so bad…

She gazes up at me, her eyes flaring, the gold around her pupils darkening. She swallows as goose bumps appear on her neck.

A primal sound builds in my throat.

Anger.

Frustration.

Loyalty.

Dammit. I shouldn’t be this close, shouldn’t touch her—

“I’ll wait.” I grind my teeth and step back.

Her lips part, a small puff of air coming out. She looks at my mouth. “For what?”

The lethal side of me, the one itching to play this game no matter the consequences, tries to take over and speak the truth. I shove it down.

You, I say in my head.

Leaving her there, I sweep past her and go to my seat.

Five fucking rows back.

THE RELATIONSHIP PACT by Adriana Locke
Release Date: December 17th

Synopsis
How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.

It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.

Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.

It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.

Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jewel E. Ann’s Not What I Expected ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

In the final semester of my undergraduate degree, I was tasked with taking 15 units to graduate with my bachelor’s in English, Languages and Literature. One of the classes I took that final semester of my undergrad was a major elective, the cherry on the top of my English sundae, so to speak. That class was a women’s fiction class. We read British and American female writers. We read everyone from Jane Austen to Willa Cather, and it indulged my love for anything created by women. What you learn quickly in a women’s fiction class, and women’s stories more specifically, is that they are often prescriptive in their exposition about the constraints of society on women. The moral, emotional, physical, and mental binds that wrap around the figurative (sometimes literal) wrists of women’s sense of selves and place in the world is constricting. I love that type of discussion because it’s reflective of my own experiences as a woman. To find yourself represented on the page, the reflection of your own struggles, is a powerful thing. When an author can encapsulate that through his or her storytelling, it is, in a word, empowering. It tells the reader, “you are not alone; you are not the only one.” One of my favorite stories from that class (along with other classes where I read this story) is Kate Chopin’s The Awakening. Now, this is not everyone’s “cup of tea.” This is one of the OG angsty romances, and it doesn’t have a traditional happy ending. Yet, it has a happy ending for its female protagonist, Edna Pontellier. Many people read this story, and quite honestly, don’t get it. They don’t recognize the freedom of Edna’s final choice, her ability to choose her life on her own terms outside the scope of society. It’s a powerful thought and underpinned by tragedy. I ate that book whole, endearing myself to Edna’s plight and finding the genius in Kate Chopin’s morbid solution.

Like Chopin and her ilk, Jewel E. Ann has ventured further into the world of what it means to be a woman in her 40s in her newest book, Not What I Expected (NWIE). That title is apropos of its story because, in many ways, this reads differently from her other stories. I am a devoted Jewel E. Ann reader. I will read anything she puts forth without question because Ann’s ability to transform the genre of romance, to ask hard questions that people don’t like to ask in polite company, to reinvent herself in every book while holding true to her voice and her instinct, sets her apart from the ordinary. I have placed her squarely on a pedestal because her storytelling challenges me, and it connects with me.

There is definitely romance in NWIE. However, as a warning, it will challenge your ideas about love and marriage and happy endings. This is the beauty of Ann’s book. While it’s challenging you, it also commiserates with you too. Each chapter has a truth, a statement about a husband or partner’s dirty habit, the thing that drives you mad as that person’s partner. So, as the reader of this book, you find yourself laughing at the outset of each chapter, commiserating with the ridiculousness of that partner’s habit, yet you quickly find your humor diffused by Ann’s heroine, Elsie’s story. If you’ve read Jewel E. Ann before, then you know no one is safe (for the most part), and she loves a bit of shock and awe to engage her reader. Thus, as Elsie’s story progresses and evolves, you find yourself easily swept up into the humor and sadness of Elsie’s journey. Ann’s ability to write a story that brings out visceral feelings is a testament to her intelligence as a writer. I am one of her many proofreaders, so I read the manuscript early. From the first chapter, my stomach dropped, my heart palpitated, and I felt like someone was stealing my breath because the truth of her book reflected my own relationship. I saw it deftly emulated my beliefs about romance, and it unnerved me. For me, that indicates the believability of Ann’s story. That’s the representation of her genius, and her willingness to bare it, to allow her readers to question love and its trappings, is a brave one. Typically, she writes romance, and this book questions our sense of it. Without divulging much of the story, if you are looking for a traditional contemporary romance as you’ve read from her before, you are NOT going to find it in this book. Because, ultimately, this book is a story about questioning your values, making choices for today, and loving yourself through those choices. For me, this book is a romance between Elsie and herself. And in a world such as romancelandia that wants to challenge romantic ideals while also holding them firmly entrenched in standards, it feels brilliant of Jewel E. Ann to “go there” in NWIE. The title becomes your own mantra as you finish this book.

I could tell you that Ann’s hero Kael is adorable and wonderful and $exy. Yet, for me, Kael reads as a flat character. We learn very little from him and about him, and this is Ann’s intention because he’s simply a conduit, the vessel by which Ann uses to challenge Elsie’s sense of love and marriage and ideals. He also acts as her foil for the same reasons. Again, Ann illustrates her genius in upending her usual fare with this book as a way to “discuss” deeply entrenched values. Albeit, she does it blanket it in humor, so it seems like Mary Poppins’s “spoon full of sugar” helping “the medicine go down.” And maybe that isn’t for everyone, but people will miss out on an opportunity to question love and romance and marriage which seems like a fruitful activity. Elsie’s journey is a special one, a real one, and what feels like a necessary one for all of us to consider.

So back to The Awakening. When I ended that book, I sat in awe pondering Kate Chopin’s suggestion for being delivered out of the constraints of societal expectations on women, both civil and religious. When I came to the end of Jewel E. Ann’s Not What I Expected, I sat in the same awe. While I ended The Awakening with reticence and bleakness in that awe, NWIE left me with some hope, with a challenge to think better, to throw off old ways of considering love and romance and the truth behind loving myself. This is the profundity that belies Jewel E. Ann’s newest book, and it feels essential in a world of romance and happily-ever-afters.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 I love that we can start 2021 with a brand new rom-com from Staci Hart. Are you ready for a new teaser? Well, here you go… ✍🏻

Staci Hart has a brand new rom-com standalone coming January 26th! Bet the Farm is a heartfelt, flirty story of opposites attract and I cannot WAIT to read it! Mark your calendars and pre-order your copy today!

Amazon | AppleBooks | Kobo | B&N | Goodreads

A very unladylike grunt grated out of me.

Every muscle engaged as I hauled a ridiculous pink suitcase off the baggage belt of the tiny airport. The curl of my toes kept me braced. My glutes were hard enough to bounce a quarter off of. Shoulders bunched, abs engaged, fingers burning.

It was more than I’d worked out in a year.

In that moment, I second guessed everything I’d packed to come home to California, even though I’d been absolutely certain every article of clothing was necessary at the time. But when I stumbled backward from the force of finally loosing my luggage, I questioned the rain boots. And the overalls. And all that plaid. But I was back at the farm after two long years, and I had to look the part.

The worst part of growing up on a dairy farm was being lactose intolerant.

Butter and cream, ice cream and cheese, and tanks brimming with milk. Growing up, it was inescapable, and as a sweet, innocent child with no clue of the tragic fate my digestive system had in store, I didn’t have to escape it. I remember sneaking hunks of cheese from the creamery and eating until I was sick in the hay loft. Or sitting across from my grandfather, warm brownie and teeming glass of fresh milk before us, the sounds of crickets floating in on the breeze through the open windows of the farmhouse.

These days, it was almond milk and soy cheese, margarine and sorbet. I’d abandoned cream, opting to drink my coffee black, which made me feel like a true badass—no easy feat at five feet and change, with hair the color of a penny and enough freckles to find constellations in the array. I was about as badass as a paper towel or a guinea pig or a carrot. Or a guinea pig on a paper towel eating a carrot.

When the suitcase wheels were on the slick tile floor of baggage claim in the eensy airport, I brushed my hair back from my clammy forehead, scanning the belt for my other suitcase.

It was equally as ridiculous a shade of pink as the one I propped myself on to catch my breath, a bright bubblegum hue, fit better for a little girl than a grown woman. A New Yorker, no less. But I couldn’t bring myself to curb the inclination to the color. It was a color that instantly brought cheer—you couldn’t tow a suitcase that vivid and hopeful without getting the distinct impression that everything would be all right, regardless of where you were going.

Even a funeral.

Olivia Brent has one summer to save the dairy farm she just inherited.

But there’s one problem, and it’s not her lactose intolerance.

Jake Milovic.

The brooding farmhand has inherited exactly fifty percent of Brent Farm, and he’s so convinced the city girl can’t work the land, he bets she can’t save it in a summer.

Determined to prove him wrong, Olivia accepts what might be the dumbest wager of her life.

His strategy to win seems simple: follow her around, shirtlessly distracting her between bouts of relentless taunting. And it’s effective—if his dark eyes and rare smiles aren’t enough to sidetrack her, the sweaty, rolling topography of the manbeast’s body would do the trick.

What they don’t know: they’ll have to weather more than each other.

Mysterious circumstances throw the farm into disarray, and with the dairy farm in danger, Olivia and Jake have to work together. But when they do, there’s more to fear than either of them imagined.

Because now their hearts are on the line, and the farm won’t be the only casualty if they fail.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

“A love story with teeth and claws. I dare you not to fall in love with Cillian Fitzpatrick.”
– Parker S. Huntington, USA Today Bestselling Author

The Villain, an all-new modern retelling of Hades and Persephone from USA Today and #1 Amazon bestselling author L.J. Shen is coming December 17th, and we have the drop-dead sexy cover!

Cruel. Coldblooded. Hades in a Brioni suit.
Cillian Fitzpatrick has been dubbed every wicked thing on planet earth.
To the media, he is The Villain.
To me, he is the man who (reluctantly) saved my life.
Now I need him to do me another, small solid.
Bail me out of the mess my husband got me into.
What’s a hundred grand to one of the wealthiest men in America, anyway?
Only Cillian doesn’t hand out free favors.
The price for the money, it turns out, is my freedom.
Now I’m the eldest Fitzpatrick brother’s little toy.
To play, to mold, to break.
Too bad Cillian forgot one, tiny detail.
Persephone wasn’t only the goddess of spring; she was also the queen of death.
He thinks I’ll buckle under the weight of his mind games.
He is about to find out the most lethal poison is also the sweetest.

Clara Saint-James is completing a journey started by an old friend. She’ll return a Cadillac to California, a place she’s avoided for more than a decade. But it’s time for closure and to put old ghosts to rest. And it’s time to find out if the feelings she’s cherished for the boy from her past are just fanciful memories—or if there’s a chance they are real.

Timing was never on her side, especially when it came to Karson Avery. The two of them lived in a junkyard as runaway teens, and though she wanted more than his friendship, he always belonged to another—until that one night when he was hers.

When Clara finds Karson living in a small, coastal town, she’s not surprised the beautiful boy from her past grew into a stunning man. His smile is as captivating as ever. His eyes have the same roguish glint. But timing is still working against her.

Clara must decide how far she’s willing to go to battle for Karson’s heart. Or if it’s time to let him go and surrender to the dotted lines that have always kept them apart.
