Author: Cassie Cross

Genre: Contemporary Romance

About The Lucky Ones:

Kendall Moore’s professional life has never been better. She’s an in-demand video editor who’s just started her own business, and that business is booming. She rarely has a moment to relax and has completely thrown herself into her work, which is just the way that she likes it. There’s just one tiny issue in her pursuit of professional and personal happiness: she’s getting burned out.

Of course, it doesn’t help that she’s hopelessly and secretly in love with her totally off-limits business partner, Jordan.

Jordan Murphy is an aspiring filmmaker with a past that he’s desperate to put behind him. When an opportunity arises to go to Vegas and film for a project he’s working on, he gets Kendall to agree to come along with him. After he makes a lucky bet that leads to a weekend full of fun, unexpected confessions, and a visit to a wedding chapel that neither one of them can remember, Kendall and Jordan head home wondering if what happened in Vegas should stay in Vegas…

Excerpt:

The more, it turns out, is a grand lakeview suite. One full side of it is nothing but windows, overlooking the strip and the fountains. There’s a living area, a dining room, two bedrooms—thank god Skye wasn’t obvious enough to get us only one—a wet bar, and more. I could probably fit my whole apartment in my ensuite bathroom.

My best friend is a movie star, so it’s not like I haven’t stayed in amazing places before, but when you’re presented with something like this out of nowhere, it seems even better somehow.

I text Skye a thank you, because I know she would kill me if I interrupted this weekend to call her. I also make it known that I’m not sure whether I should want to hug her or strangle her.

She tells me I can do both so long as I have a good time this weekend.

Not having a good time seems impossible.

When the concierge leaves Jordan and I to our own devices, I look over at him accusingly. “So, you and Skye did this? You two were in cahoots? You cahooted?”

He laughs. “Don’t let River hear you say that.”

I roll my eyes. “Jordan.”

“Okay, yes, we were in cahoots. We’re just two people who wanted you to take a break and we figured the only way we could do it was to trick you into it by tying it with something work-related.”

Hearing it presented to me like this gives me a whole new outlook on the kind of life I’ve been living. That my friends thought they had to trick me into a mini vacation is pretty sad, but what’s even sadder is that they’re right.

Under any other circumstances, I probably wouldn’t have come willingly.

Now her insistence on packing my clothes makes more sense. She wanted to make sure I came here with everything I needed.

“I think I had a meeting on my calendar for tomorrow afternoon,” I say. And wow, how pathetic.

“You didn’t, I checked. No more thinking about work. And to make sure that you don’t, there’s a masseuse coming to give you a massage in five minutes.”

After the initial shock wears off, I realize that in order to make it through this weekend, I’m just gonna have to expect the unexpected and go with the flow.

“And then what?”

He smiles, probably happy that I’m not fighting him. “And then dinner.”

“Where?”

He winks. “That’s a surprise.”

“What should I wear?”

“You’ll find out after the massage.”

Okay, maybe I can’t do this go with the flow thing. “Jordan, what—”

“Trust me,” he says. This long, meaningful look passes between us.

“Always,” I whisper.

He takes a step into my personal space and clasps my hand in his. He’s so close I have to crane my neck to look at him. “Enjoy your massage,” he says, giving my hand a squeeze. “I’ll meet you in the lobby when you’re done.” He lets go of my hand, his touch lingering as long as it can before distance breaks it.

The lobby is an incredibly large general area in a place like this. “Where in the lobby?”

He gives me a soft smile when he stops at the door. “You’ll know when you’re down there.”

✍🏻 With the release of Colleen Hoover’s Layla this week, I have a special Q & A with her, highlighting the process of bringing Layla to life. To celebrate the release, there is a Giveaway, so be sure to enter it below. ✍🏻

✍🏻 Q&A with Author Colleen Hoover ✍🏻

You have written in many different genres and always keep your fans wanting more. For Layla, you are dipping your toes into a paranormal story that has lots of secrets. How do you describe Layla without giving anything away? #spoilerfreezone

What is supposed to be a short, romantic getaway for new couple Leeds and Layla turns into an extended vacation full of bizarre occurrences. But no matter how much Layla wants to leave, Leeds is more focused on finding answers for the unexplainable.

The paranormal elements in your story are faint…just a whisper…until they take over. What was it like adding another worldly twist to your writing for the first time?

It was HARD. Super hard. I love using my imagination, but I also love realistic stories, so I found myself trying to pull back on things I didn’t feel were realistic. But then it got a lot easier when I decided to just make Leeds’s reactions sort of mirror what I would do orsay in those early moments. I put a lot of my own thoughts in Leeds’s character. He finds it hard to explain some of the things that happen, so his reactions are probably what my reactions would be at first. Until there was no room left for doubt, anyway. Then his actions veer very far from what mine would have been.

Love-at-first-sight is such a mundane phrase for what these two share. Their passionate relationship seems to move in fast-forward. What is it about these characters that make their connection so instantaneous?

I knew where the story was going to go, so I needed their meet-cute to be believable, fun, and I wanted them to be a couple readers would root for. I probably rewrote that first chapter dozens of times, but I focused mainly on their banter. Sometimes we meet people we instantly click with on so many different levels. Leeds and Layla clicked with their sarcasm, their humor, their taste in music. And she read him without even knowing him. To Leeds that was special. I think he felt seen in a world where he’s often overlooked.

It becomes somewhat of an inside joke between your couple that, before Layla, Leeds’ always wore a look like he was“dying inside.” The truth is that he was deeply unhappy before meeting Layla. How does she change his life?

Leeds is lonely and holding back on his dreams because of doubts. Leeds sees something different in Layla. She’s carefree, fun and gives him confidence to follow his dreams. In a sense, I think she’s his missing puzzle piece. She fills the parts of him that are empty.

Before Leeds, Layla doesn’t have a real direction in her life. What does this romance provide to her and why is she so grateful to have found her hero?

Layla is fresh out of college, living with her parents and unemployed. Leeds’s career gives her focus, and being with him in Tennessee got her out of a place where she probably felt useless and unproductive.

Can readers expect more paranormal elements in your books moving forward?

I’ll never say never!

He tasted like tequila and the fake name I gave him was Rose.

Four years ago, I decided to get over one man, by getting under another. A single night and nothing more.

I found my handsome stranger with a shot glass and charming but devilish smile at the end of the bar. The desire that hit his eyes the second they landed on me ignited a spark inside me, instant and hot. He was perfect and everything I didn’t know I needed. That one night may have ended, but I left with much more than a memory.

Four years later, and with a three-year-old in tow, the man I still dream about is staring at me from across the street in the town I grew up in. I don’t miss the flash of recognition, or the heat in his gaze.

The chemistry is still there, even after all these years.
I just hope the secrets and regrets don’t destroy our second chance before it’s even begun.

Excerpt:

I reach for the chair in front of me. Instead of finding leather, my fingers brush against something else. Something warmer. Something smoother and rougher all at the same time.

My heart jumps in my chest at the same moment that my head snaps to the side.

Oh. Shit.

The most beautiful set of hazel eyes I’ve ever seen traps my gaze. The warmth of the chocolate brown is cooled by the spring green embedded in the orbs. Gold flecks twinkle as the man slowly withdraws his palm away from mine.

I open my mouth, but I’ve somehow forgotten how to speak.

“Hey,” he says, his southern drawl rippling across my ears. “You can have it.”

I shake my head to try to jolt myself out of the haze I’m in. “I … I can have what?”

His full, pouty lips split into a sexy smirk. “I meant the chair, but if there’s something else on your mind, just let me know.”

My heart flutters in my chest as a wave of heat courses through my body from head to toe.

A couple of days’ scruff peppers a sharp, chiseled jaw. His skin is sun-kissed and imperfect and there’s the slightest mole beneath his left eye that gives a bit of softness to his appearance. His body is long, well over six feet, with broad shoulders and a thick chest.

It’s one heck of a picture.

Slowly, oh-so-slowly, the fog in my brain lifts.

“Can I buy you a drink?” he asks.

A crazy idea pops into my brain. The longer that I watch the stranger peer at me from under his thick lashes, the more it seems possible.

Crazy, yes, but possible.

“Want to do me a favor instead?” I ask before I can talk myself out of it.

My chest rises and falls in quick succession as he, and I, ponder my question. He narrows his eyes as he undoubtedly considers why a woman he just met might need his help.

His heavy brows tug together. “That depends on what it is.”

Blood pours through my ears as I realize I’m teetering on the edge of something impetuous. Again. I’m about to do the one thing I told myself I wouldn’t do.

Wasn’t I going to put the brakes on this kind of thing? Didn’t I swear that I was not going to tangle myself up with men? Wasn’t I going to save myself time and energy until good men come back into the universe?

I look up and down his long, muscled body.

I bet he’s a damn good man.

“Are you going to ask or not?” he asks, killing me softly with a playful quirk of his brow.

Screw it.

I take a quick lungful of air and commit to this insanity. “I’m going to need an answer to two questions.”

“Shoot.”

Quickly.”

He grins. “I can’t answer them if you don’t ask them, beautiful.”

I steady myself against the term of endearment and stay focused.

“Do you have a girlfriend?” I ask.

His eyes sparkle with mischief. “I like where this is going.”

“That’s not an answer and we’re running out of time.”

“No,” he says hurriedly. “Hard no. Definitely not. No girlfriend.”

“Second question …” I take another deep breath and then go in for the kill. “Will you be my fake boyfriend for five minutes?”

His grin knocks the breath I’m holding right out of me. “When do we start?”

For Hollis and Larissa, starting is the easy part. It’s ending their fake relationship that’s hard. Fall in love with them here: https://geni.us/Hq6TNb

Blurb:
How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.
It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.
Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.
It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.
Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jessica Peterson’s Southern Hotshot ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

Ever since falling into Jessica Peterson’s Charleston Heat series, I’ve been intrigued by her storytelling. You can ask any number of romance authors and they will espouse their feminism through their choice to write romance. Yet, very few show that feminism in ways that are overt and seemingly didactic in nature. I’m not saying that Peterson’s feminist identity is structured in such a way that when you read her stories you feel as though you’re being “hit over the head” by her ideologies. Instead, they feel infused into her stories, and it creates this grit in her romances that grants them a depth even when her heroes and heroines are romping in bedrooms or cars or kitchens or barns.

Peterson’s newest book in her North Carolina Highlands series, Southern Hotshot, has that same gravity to it. She is so good about finding and building nuanced ideas in her characters. They don’t fulfill a typical romantic notion. Instead, they challenge your thinking about identity in a way that’s both meaningful and different. In Southern Hotshot, Peterson interrogates ideas about control and about societal and familial expectations about perfection. Both Samuel and Emma, her hero and heroine, struggle with these issues, and just as she did with the first book of this series, Southern Seducer, and that books handling of post-partum depression and CTE, Peterson allows us into the conversation about controlling our emotions as a protection against failure. What that does is make her romances feel important and insightful. They challenge you at the same time as they entertain and engage you. For this reader, I gorge on her stories like the grits of her books.

There is something sultry about this book. As Emma and Samuel work toward vulnerability, and they transition their power to the other, it makes for a steam that is less about the physicality of her characters and more about their emotional connection. Their simmer leads to a full-on boil over and over again in Southern Hotshot

And if you leave Peterson’s book without a serious interest in food and wine, then you are missing something. I am not a foodie or wino by any means, yet Samuel and Emma tell their love story through food and wine, and it’s compelling. It makes you think about how we all have memories attached to some food or drink, and I think, in the South especially, this is fundamental to their identity. It is clearly fundamental to this book.

I knew I would love Samuel because his intercessions in Southern Seducer show his heart. And I wasn’t at all wrong. However, together, Samuel and Emma are spectacular, as is their story. I connected with it in its intentional depiction of control and perfectionism. Those are my own struggles and to see it reflected through Samuel and Emma’s journey made me feel invested. If you love your romance with a little “meat on the bone” and a “full-bodied wine,” then you will absolutely want to read Southern Hotshot

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s The Romantic Pact, book 2 of The Kings of Football ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Following in the same vein as Ilsa Madden-Mills’s The Revenge Pact, Meghan Quinn’s The Romantic Pact is a heart-stealing, laugh one minute and cry the next romance of Superbowl proportions. In this book, we gain the story of Crew, one-third of The Kings of Football. There is so much I loved about this story because it’s layered and thoughtful in its depiction of two best friends finding love. In this book, you will find so many great truths about love sandwiched with the aspects of romancelandia that tug at your heart. Here is why you should read The Romantic Pact:

*Quinn does something right with The Romantic Pact that oftentimes stories with the best friends-to-lovers trope fail at. Crew and Hazel don’t readily fall into bed with each other. Quinn thoughtfully takes her time in developing their chemistry. Their friendship is clear, but the chemistry requires the space to build so that their eventual coupling feels believable even for a fictional story. What does this mean to her readers? This is a total slow-burn of a story, which I loved because it made sense that they wouldn’t rush into their attraction. Instead, Quinn stokes it for much of the story that when they finally consummate it, it’s like a Superbowl firework spectacular.

*I’ve loved that the heroes of The Kings of Football series thus far have been these young men of integrity and compassion. There is something gentle and sweet about River and now Crew which seems contrary to usual depictions of football stars. I love the intentionality of the character development in terms of all of these characters not being particularly successful in football because that isn’t the norm in sports romances centered around the football world. Instead, this offers up romances that read as a mixture of rom-com and new adult romance. It makes it easy to fall for a character such as Crew, who, while a bit vain and a little self-absorbed, shows his love and care for Hazel easily. It’s what makes him a swoony hero.

*In this book, the heroine is really the hero. Quinn’s feminism is shown through your characterization of Hazel in being an authority on the farm and in her want to save it. There are a few moments in this story where Quinn is intentional in subverting the typical roles of men and women, and it’s exciting to see an author challenging her readers’ values through her characterizations. Yet, she deftly illustrates through Crew and Hazel that we each have a flawed filter. Basically, this means we see the world through a particular lens, and in her development of Hazel and Crew, it’s a reminder to consider our own life views.

*Nothing makes me happier than an older person character in a story. In The Romantic Pact, my favorite character is Pops, Crew’s grandfather. He is a vehicle for the telling of Hazel and Crew’s story, and there are so many moments when your heart is pulled by his empathy, his foresight, and his love. There is something special about a wizened older character. It adds layers of gravity to a seemingly simple love story.

If The Revenge Pact and The Romantic Pact are any indications, Adriana Locke’s The Relationship Pact will round out a charming trifecta of modern-day romances. Every turn of the page of The Romantic Pact felt like falling into the rabbit-hole of the romance world. From the setting to their journey to Hazel and Crew as the hero and heroine of this story, this book left me feeling like the world was just a little less heavy today.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Jessica Peterson’s Southern Hotshot is LIVE. Let me tell you…Samuel and Emma are sultry, steamy fun. If you’ve missed Blue Mountain Farm, now’s the time to return. ✍🏻

Lusting after the woman trying to steal my job is stupid. Sexting with her? That’s a game-changing fumble.

Southern Hotshot by Jessica Peterson is now live!

Emma Crawford became enemy number one the second she stepped foot on Blue Mountain Farm. She might think I’m just a dumb jock, but I know she’s a stuck-up wine snob who believes she’d be a better exec than me.

She can take my position over my dead body.

But with her ridiculous curves and fearless smarts, she’s becoming one giant distraction just when I need to prove my worth most.

Lucky for me that I have a secret internet sext partner to blow off steam with. My nightly dirty chats with V scratch all the itches Emma gives me.

Emma and V couldn’t be more different–except it turns out they’re the same person.

Just when I thought this scenario was enough of a disaster, I’m falling for the co-worker I can’t touch and can hardly stand.

Even a hotshot player like me can see this is a game we’re both gonna lose.

SOUTHERN HOTSHOT is a full length, STANDALONE small town novel. It is the second book in the all new North Carolina Highland series.

Jessica Peterson writes smart, sexy romance set in her favorite cities around the world. She grew up on a steady diet of Mr. Darcy, Jamie Frasier, and Edward Cullen, and it wasn’t long before she started creating irresistible heroes of her own. She loves strong coffee, stronger heroines, and heroes with hot accents.

She lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with her husband Ben, her daughter Gracie, and her smelly Goldendoodle Martha Bean.
