✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Favorite Books of 2023 ✍🏻

It’s time for the “best of” types of posts as we near the end of 2023. These stories left behind pieces of themselves. These are the types of stories that I continue to ruminate on as the year ends, and I’m pained to let them go for stories coming in 2024.

Thank you to all of these authors who have gifted us a bit of themselves in each of these books.

  • Ashley Jade’s The Choice
  • Jewel E. Ann’s Before Us
  • J.T. Geissinger’s Liars Like Us
  • K.A. Tucker’s The Simple Wild (and the rest of that series)
  • Lucy Score’s Things We Hide From the Light et al.
  • Catherine Cowles’s Whispers of You (the series is FANTASTIC, but this is my fav book of the series)
  • Kandi Steiner’s Meet Your Match (although I also loved book 2, Watch Your Mouth)
  • Jewel E. Ann’s Because of Her (she earned two spots…for good reason)
  • Meghan Quinn’s The Way I Hate Him (she released so many GREAT books this year, but this is my FAV of them all)
  • Sierra Simone’s Salt Kiss (erotic and engaging…still not over it. Can’t wait for the next book)
  • Helena Hunting’s Shattered Truths
  • Devney Perry’s Coach (I also ADORED Sable Peak from her The Edens series, but Coach nudged Mateo and Vera’s story just a bit)
  • Kristen Ashley’s Fighting the Pull (my fav River Rain story… Hale and Elsa are “chef’s kiss”)
  • Karla Sorensen’s The Best Laid Plans (a sleeper favorite)
  • Laney Hatcher’s Love Matched, a SmartyPants Romance story (a total surprise)
  • Rebecca Yarros’s Fourth Wing (this one held me in its thrall)

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Meghan Quinn’s He’s Not My Type ✍🏻

Overall Grade: B+

Tropes: he falls first; close proximity; friends to lovers; pro hockey/sports romance; roommates; found family; band of brothers

I had eagerly anticipated Meghan Quinn’s He’s Not My Type, mostly because I’ve enjoyed her Vancouver Agitators series and secondly because I’ve been intrigued with Halsey Holmes. Insight into Professor A’s romance loves: broody, quiet, emotionally complex heroes/MMCs are my favorite. Hence, other than Silas Taters, I’ve hoped for Halsey’s story.

For the most part, Quinn doesn’t disappoint with him. For one, what’s not to love about a “he falls first” trope for Quinn’s most internal character? Halsey falls deep, at first sight, for Blakely, her FMC. This creates two situations: his unrequited love grows to the point that he becomes awkward (very funny stuff) when he finally has the opportunity to date her, and two, his friends, the foundation of this series, are enlisted to help him. This provides pages upon pages of hilarious banter with this band of brothers we’ve all come to love. You’ll laugh out loud at their antics as they seek to aid Halsey in his pursuit of Blakely. Honestly, it’s the best part of He’s Not My Type…which is where the problem of this story lies.

You see, as much as I anxiously awaited this book, some aspects disappointed me…or, more concisely, confused me. For one, the pacing was strange. If you’ve read the first books of this series, you know that Halsey’s twin brother has died. I had wanted the background as well as the emotional journey that Halsey must undertake to work through the grief at the loss of his brother. Quinn does proffer that up, but she spends the last ten percent of the book working out Halsey’s emotions about it. What happens is a strange pacing situation in her book. The second issue is Blakely’s chemistry with Halsey. It’s clear that he pines for her. He’s attracted to her into speechlessness, but Blakely doesn’t return it until much later in the book. In fact, Blakely’s character journey feels pretty flat in contrast to Halsey’s, and it makes it difficult (at least for me) to accept her change of interest in Halsey…at least at first. Their physicality changes her impression of him. Quinn has Halsey morph from awkward broody quiet guy to alpha stud in the sheets. It’s not hard to understand Blakely’s change of heart, but it causes you to consider her reasons behind it. Then, when Halsey has his breakdown (again, in the last ten percent of the book), she’s all in and his emotional support. The emotional development of their relationship lacks the depth necessary to pull off the last portion of the story. At least, that’s how I felt in reading it.

He’s Not My Type is less about the romance between Halsey and Blakely. That’s a foregone conclusion. Instead, it’s about the band of brothers and its impact on helping Halsey grieve. Much of that is couched in some delicious funny banter, but it’s more a deflection to the heart of this story: the love shared with teammates. Is this book typical Meghan Quinn? Indeed. Is it spicy? Absolutely! Halsey Holmes is a beast in the bedroom. But does the storytelling match the quality of the other Vancouver Agitators books? I’m not so sure. I am absolutely ready for Posey’s story; Quinn has set that up well. I’m thinking we might also get another character in this world, thanks to a crossover with the other books in her universe. I just hoped Halsey’s story would have had a stronger emotional impact than Meghan Quinn gifted us.

In love and romance,

Professor A

About HE’S NOT MY TYPE:

Word to the wise, never become roommates with a girl you’ve been pining over for the better part of a year.

You’re probably wondering why I would do such a thing? Well, I didn’t.

It was my teammates.

The moment they found out Blakely White was single, they took it upon themselves to play cupid and instruct me on how I should win her over.

Don’t wear a shirt around her.
Make her dinner.
Lightly touch her shoulder when you say goodbye.

I’m so flustered, so overwhelmed, so madly in love with this woman who barely notices me, that I lose control of the situation and make one huge mistake: I offer to be her fake date for a wedding so she can make her ex jealous.

That means, for one whole night I get a free pass with her. I get to hold her, dance with her, kiss her…stare at her from across the room like she’s my entire world because she has been for months now.

But when the night comes to an end, I’m faced with two options: bring her back to my bedroom and show her how I really feel, or let her walk away, succumbing to the fact that I very well might not be her type.

When I see the office door is open, I steel my nerves and knock on the wood while poking my head in.

She’s sitting at her desk, staring into space so my knock startles her. “Oh, Halsey,” she says, making eye contact. “What are you doing here?”

I step into her office. “Uh, I thought you might need a new phone.” I walk up to her desk and place it on the glass surface.

“Seriously?” she asks, looking stunned. “You got me a phone?”

I pull on the back of my neck while holding the donuts, starting to feel even more foolish from her reaction. “Well, I assumed you might need one for the game tonight and everything. You just need to insert your SIM card. I didn’t know what case you’d like so I just grabbed this,” I say while pulling a purple case from my back pocket. “Apparently it doesn’t slip from hands easily. And there’s a screen protector already installed on it as well. The purple is for the Agitators, but feel free to change it.”

She stares at the phone and the case for a few seconds before looking up at me.

“If you don’t like it or if it’s wrong, I can take it back. I have time, so I can make the trip.”

She shakes her head. “No, sorry, I love it, I’m just . . . stunned, is all. This was so nice of you. Thank you, Halsey.”

“Oh sure.” I set the donuts down as well. “And these are because you said you needed a donut. Not sure if you were able to pick one up or not.”

She offers me that beautiful smile, which makes me so goddamn weak that I grip the chair in front of me so I don’t make a fool of myself.

“I wasn’t able to grab a donut, so you just made my day.”

“Well, I felt bad, so . . . hope your day goes better.”

She stands from her desk and rounds it, coming right up to me. Unsure what she’s about to do, I just stare at her as she loops her arms around me and pulls me into a hug.

A warm, genuine hug.

I’m quite stiff at first, but after one second of feeling her around me, my arms immediately circle her, and my head leans in, taking in the sweet scent of her shampoo—it’s like a field of flowers.

“Thank you so much, Halsey. I appreciate it.”

“Oh, you’re welcome,” I say as she pulls away. My fingers drag along her slender back before I let go.

Those beautiful eyes stare up at me as she says, “It’s been an insane day, and I’m not sure I even apologized for flashing you. Did I? I blacked out. I know I spoke of a loincloth. Honestly, it wasn’t my best moment.” She flips open the donut box and pulls one out. She then takes a giant bite before letting her head fall back while she moans in delight.

Oh man, I’m a goner . . .

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s The Way I Hate Him ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Tropes: small town romance; enemies to lovers; forced proximity; insta-attraction; rockstar romance; grump/sunshine; workplace romance; cinnamon roll hero

“She’s peace, but she’s anarchy. She’s a challenge, but she’s effortless. She’s simple…yet complicated. And I like all of it. I’ve become accustomed to her presence.”

Meghan Quinn is a puzzle. Her pieces come together into a complex work of art, yet her surface seems as simple as a 100-piece puzzle. As you delve into her stories, you find quickly that there is always more than what meets the eye. The Way I Hate Him is an emotional juggernaut that I didn’t expect. It begins light but evolves its depth into a story that will make you cry with joy and a side of pain. I couldn’t put it down.

Quinn’s main characters, Hayes and Hattie, are a paradox. At the outset, you’ll find yourself entranced with their fun banter and overwhelming chemistry. These two run hot for each other, and the fun of this book is the way they fight their attraction. Their oppositional forces make you smile and laugh. This is everything you enjoy about Quinn’s romance.

For me, though, it’s the latter portion of the story where Hattie’s sunshine becomes the foil to Hayes’s grump, exposing his soft underbelly. It’s there where the romance morphs from hot lust and fireworks to something more significant. Quinn walks us through themes of grief and familial trauma. She humanizes Hayes, creating vulnerability in him that matches the feelings of grief in Hattie. In that moment, I shed a few tears for their hurts, but Quinn deftly weaves her story into a space of healing, culling her main characters’ happy ending into something with depth. The ending does not go the way of its beginning, and Quinn leaves her readers sated by Hattie and Hayes’s happy ending.

Finally, the ancillary characters of The Way I Hate Him add layers to this roller coaster of a romance. I fell in love with Hattie’s siblings, Ryland and Aubree, her best friend, Maggie, and Ryland and Hayes’s friend, Abel. Hayes’s grandmother adds humor to the story, but she acts as Hayes’s wizened guide. And the piece de resistance is Hattie’s relationship with her sister, Cassidy. It’s one of the most special portions of Quinn’s book.

Meghan Quinn’s The Way I Hate Him stole my heart. It was one of my favorite reads to end the month of July and begin August. If you love enemies to lovers with witty banter and spicy fun, grab this one FAST! It’s a great beginning to, what I hope, is a new series. There are too many exciting characters whom I want their stories.

In love and romance,

About THE WAY I HATE HIM:

Why am I holding a box of stolen memorabilia in my arms? It’s called . . . revenge.

After failing my last semester of grad school, I decided to come back to my hometown and wallow in my boyfriend’s sympathetic arms. Instead, he proceeded to dump me . . . for being boring!

Now, I’m not typically a spiteful person, but there’s only so much I can take. Hence why I’m holding the box of his most cherished possessions…stolen possessions no less!

The plan? To give the box back to its rightful owner and rat my ex out. How’s that for being boring?

But plans never go the way you want them, because instead of dropping off the box with a note, I’m pinned with the crime by the true owner of the box himself.

Hayes Farrow is grumpy, arrogant, and stupidly hot in a way that makes it hard to even look him in the eye. Not to mention he’s my brother’s nemesis so I fully intended to stay far far away from the gorgeous jerk.

But to add insult to the injury that has become my life as of late, Hayes gives me two options: turn me into the police and press full charges . . . or work it off. How could I possibly work for someone I can’t stand? Easy, I don’t look good in orange.

But working for Hayes isn’t as horrible as I thought it would be. The way I hate him begins to turn into something else – something I never thought I’d feel. But the way my brother reacts when he finds out I’m working for his enemy? He’d prefer me in prison orange.

Review

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s Right Man Right Now ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Tropes: fake relationship; age-gap romance; sports romance; hockey romance; broken hero; fearless heroine

I am in love with Silas Taters, the broken hero of Meghan Quinn’s newest hockey romance, Right Man Right Time. The third book of her Vancouver Agitators series, I’m certain this newest story is my favorite. You might ask why.

  1. I’m a fiend for a broken hero. And Silas Taters is a broken man, complete with fortified walls against emotional attachments and a short fuse ignited by the thoughts of his cheating ex-girlfriend. Silas is a man who takes life a bit too seriously which means that Meghan Quinn must surround his character with people who add humor to his life. Even more, Silas is one of her dirtiest MMCs to date.
  2. Enter the FMC of Right Man Right Time: Ollie. Even her name inspires a smile. She is exactly the heroine for Silas because, even though she is ten years younger than him, she brings light and life to his focused, sterile, protective life. From their first unexpected kiss, Quinn writes them as necessary for each other. She challenges and titillates him and makes him break down his emotional walls. I loved Ollie from the moment she decided to engage in a fake relationship of convenience with him. When he “forgets” her at their first hockey event because he’s fixated on his ex, my heart broke for Ollie. When she reminded him of his promise not to leave her side and she breaks down in front of him, my heart melted for her. I cheered for her when she stood up to his ex Sarah because Sarah was taking liberties with Silas. As much as I loved Silas, Ollie is the magic of their coupledom.
  3. Besides Ollie, Posey adds more light to Silas’s life as he jockeys within his “relationship” with Ollie. When Ollie isn’t providing humor, Posey is, acting as a break from Silas’s seriousness. Pacey, Hornsby, and Holmes add to Silas’s characterization in the same way, but Posey is necessary to ameliorate the pain of Silas’s characterization and offers respite from his angst and anger.
  4. Quinn’s recent books, including Right Man Right Time, are straight-up steamfests. When Silas and Ollie finally acknowledge and act upon their attraction, Quinn teases it in some of the spiciest physical scenes. These are combustible, and Quinn metes it out in sections of chapters throughout her book, turning up the heat with each new scene. It’s everything you love woven into an emotional, humorous romance.

Don’t miss Silas and Ollie. Right Man Right Time is my current favorite Vancouver Agitators…but there is always Holmes. I’m ready for his story, but I’m okay with Silas holding the title for now.

In love and romance,

Professor A
