✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Jewel E. Ann’s Because of Her ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Jewel E. Ann’s Because of Her is a true gem. I was honored to edit this book, so I read it early on. It’s been a month or so, and this book has stayed with me. Jackson/Jax/Jude Day is one of a handful of characters whose story was penetrating. I will never forget him at the end of Out of Love, offering the ultimate parental sacrifice. I felt that deep. When Jewel announced this resolution, this final story, in a series of standalone books, I wanted to celebrate. As I read her manuscript, a process that causes a distance of feeling from the story, I found myself drawn to Frankie and Jackson. Even more, it made me pine for more of this family: Jessica and Luke and Livy and Slade. Even though this book can be read as a standalone, what I loved the most is the return to this beloved world. Jewel doesn’t hold us away from Jackson’s family. She gives us access and resolution in a way that fans like me needed after Out of Love

If you haven’t read this series, here’s why you should read this story:

  1. A wildly protective, assassin of a man MMC. Yes, he’s older, but he’s wildly attractive
  2. An FMC who reminds me of Jackson’s sister. You don’t have to read her Jack and Jill trilogy (although you should) to get a sense of the one person Jackson believes to be his soulmate: his sister, Jessica. Frankie embodies the same qualities: headstrong, fierce, independent, and protective.
  3. Jewel writes romances that follow the beat of their own drum. It’s hard to pin tropes on them. She intentionally rips up her characters’ lives and their storyline to interrogate different aspects of human nature. For example, one of the challenges for readers is the idea of ethics: what are you willing to do for revenge? Should you sell your soul to mete out revenge on a person who has wronged you? Jackson and Frankie turn this inside out and upside down throughout the story. This is but one of many themes she tests throughout this book as well as the rest of the books on her booklist.
  4. I’ve said this before in many reviews, but it’s important to say it again: Jewel E. Ann is a queen of quotable nuggets. As I was reading her manuscript, I would highlight sentences and type “this is a great teaser.” She wordsmiths at a level that astounds me.
  5. And finally, her intentionality in crafting romances that aren’t formulaic should get people to read Because of Her. This point is the main reason you should download your booklist today and get reading. Her voice and sense of authorial identity are unique in romancelandia.

Jewel E. Ann’s Because of Her is the true final chapter of her Jack and Jill series. Yes, it can be read without the others, but to read it before the rest is to miss out on Jewel E. Ann’s genius. If I had any recommendation, I would download the entire series and binge-read it in one weekend. You’ll fall madly, deeply in love with Jackson, Frankie, Jessica, Luke, Livy, and Slade…

In love and romance,

I don’t know why teenage girls are so mean.

I don’t know why rich men cheat on their wives.

All I know for sure is that I feel safe in a stranger’s arms and understood by someone I don’t understand.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Jewel E. Ann’s If This Is Love ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“Every cell in my body, every thought in my head, every fiber of my being tells me she’s mine.”

Every review I’ve ever written about Jewel E. Ann’s stories goes a little something like this: “I’m never sure of my ‘why’ for loving her stories, other than, they have a different feel/vibe than other books.” It’s hard to put into words the power of her stories. At face value, her books seem simplistic. Honestly, her prose is decadent in almost a Hemingwayian manner. Wrapped in pared-down prose, Jewel E. Ann hits her readers with truth bombs that cause you to fall deeply in love with her. Take her newest book, If This Is Love, and consider this gem: “Don’t look back, Indie. Didn’t you hear me? It’s a slow death. Look forward. Chase something better. Don’t ever [f’ing] look back.” “If I don’t know where I’ve been, how will I know where I’m going?” […] You’ll know where you are when you get there not because you know where you’ve been. You’ll know it because it’s where you’re supposed to be. It will be a feeling of belonging that can’t be explained. It’s just a feeling you’ll know. And all you have to do is keep following that feeling, and you’ll be fine.” At the surface, the words portend an easy truth; yet, below the surface, the truth about living in the present is challenging. This moment in Jewel E. Ann’s book is ironic because Milo lives his life in the past even though he believes he’s moving forward further away from it. He tells Indie to keep looking forward when he’s actually stuck (not really by his choice) in the choices of his past.

The genius behind this type of writing is the reason readers of Jewel E. Ann continue to gobble her stories. Her romances are anything but simple, and she doesn’t take it easy on them. In If This Is Love, she does what she does best: she makes her readers cry, hold their breath, throw their kindles at walls, etc. This newest book is two parts of epic fated love wrapped in the barbed wire of angst. Do not believe for one minute it is light-hearted. When Indie and Milo engage in a seemingly innocent butter-smashing episode, it’s undergirded by the tension of the forbidden relationship. Everything that seems positive for her characters, the promise of their love, meets an equal reaction of malice. And so it goes back and forth, tethering her readers’ hearts deeper to Milo and Indie’s journey.

I disagree that If This Is Love is a cowboy romance. Is Milo a cowboy? Sure. Does much of the story exist on a ranch? Yes. But honestly, you could place this same story in a city or a suburb, and you’d get the same result: bittersweet love that finds its beautiful ending…eventually. It wouldn’t matter whether Milo wore a cowboy hat and chaps or a three-piece suit, the emotion of this story would be the same.

Did I enjoy this book? Absolutely! However, I did find a couple of areas underdeveloped. For one, I never fully understood Fletcher’s need for revenge on behalf of Milo’s brother convincing. I kept asking myself “why”…Why did he care so much? Secondly, for me, the ending was wrapped up a bit too neatly. I left If This Is Love swooning at Milo and Indie’s HEA, but I had too many questions.

You must know that I will read Jewel E. Ann’s stories until she no longer writes them because she has a voice that distinguishes itself from the rest. She captivates, challenges, and charms her readers with the ease of a practiced author who knows exactly who she is.

In love and romance,

Review

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jewel E. Ann’s Before Us ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“Love is not good at chasing expectations. It thrives on acceptance.”

Jewel E. Ann’s Before Us is a poignant, heart-rending story about timing and soulmates. As I sit here trying to put this review together, the phrase “hits and misses” keeps running through my mind. Many of Jewel E. Ann’s (who I will refer to as JEA for the duration of this review) play with timing. Her characters oftentimes aren’t “meant to be” during a specific time and place, so she separates them and brings them back together when “the time is right.” But really she isn’t noting a “right” time; she’s simply challenging us to consider the options of life.

In Before Us, JEA challenges us to consider soulmates. Are we fated for one person for the rest of our lives? Or is it possible to love different people with the same gravity of love at different moments? In fact, she shows us this clearly in this book, and you don’t ever doubt the veracity of it. She is careful in her construction of this, though. Her choices about timing, I think, are why I adore her stories. She knows her readers and intentionally crafts a chronology that allows us to accept tropes such as cheating (that trope isn’t in this story) or her MMC marrying her FMC shortly after the death of his wife. She deftly highlights the difficulty of perception in an incredibly uncomfortable moment in the story. She doesn’t allow her characters to “get away” with their choices; JEA metes out consequences for them. So it creates this lovely balance between reality and fiction.

In Before Us, JEA challenges us with the idea of dreams. What is a dream? Can dreams change as life happens? Should one character usurp another character’s dreams? What about one character supposing they know the dreams of the other character better than they know it for themselves? I found Zach and Emersyn’s journey around this idea most frustrating but necessary. I wanted to scream at Zach to stop sacrificing and take for himself. The tension of his choices compelled me through the story, however.

I just want to stop right here. I have too many words to describe why readers should read Jewel E. Ann’s Before Us, and they seem insufficient. Emersyn’s story is the reality of our world. Young people are homeless and have to sacrifice for basic needs…and it’s all here in this book. Zach’s journey illustrates the grief process. How does one process the death of a loved one? Even more, how does one love someone who is terminally ill, having to make choices that feel devastating so they can find peace? It’s all here. All that is lovely and painful and life-affirming is in Before Us. Jewel E. Ann once again shows us why she is a beloved author in the world of romance through her beautiful storytelling in this book.

In love and romance,

Professor A
