Starting goalie for the Tampa Bay Ospreys and the kind of hot that scrambles your brain, all I was ever supposed to be to him was his daughterโ€™s kindergarten teacher. Then, in a twist of events, his temporary nanny.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
But temporary turns to permanent, and when I move into his pool house, everything changes.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Heโ€™s impossibly grumpy and focused on only two things: hockey, and taking care of his daughter. Iโ€™m only focused on using this new income to pay back my student loans. โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
But in that house, I feel his heated gaze beneath that permanent scowl, the way it lingers and warms my skin. And though I know my mother would lose her mind if she knew, my dreams have become midnight fantasies about my long-haired, muscle-lined mystery of a boss.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
When the tension becomes too much, we break, and we make a deal. โ€‰โ€‰

He still needs a nanny. I still need a paycheck and for my matriarchy to not disown me. But Will agrees to teach me everything Iโ€™ve always wanted to learn, and Iโ€™m all too eager to be his student.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
I can do this. Iโ€™m a grown woman. I can explore my sexuality with the hottest goalie on earth and still remain one-hundred percent professional. โ€‰โ€‰
And I can definitely do it all without catching feelings. โ€‰โ€‰
I have to.โ€‰โ€‰
โ€‰โ€‰
Otherwise, Iโ€™ll end up heartbroken in my motherโ€™s arms while she shakes her head and asks me if Iโ€™ll ever learn my lesson.โ€‰โ€‰

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Ilsa Madden-Mills’s My Darling Bride โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: B

Tropes: marriage of convenience; grump/sunshine; pro football MMC; soulmates

Ilsa Madden-Mills will always be a must-read author for this reader. Her stories hit you right in the heart and tend to last long past their reading. Her newest romance, My Darling Bride, is an engaging, yet uneven marriage of convenience romance. When her MMC, Graham, requires a bride to acquire an inheritance as help for his brother, he chooses Emmy, the woman who โ€œborrowedโ€ his Lamborghini, as her penance. There is actually more to it, but Graham, the ever-serious grump who is too focused on football, cannot admit his attraction and interest in her. Madden-Millsโ€™s story is a journey of tears and smiles as Graham comes to recognize his need for Emmy.

There is much to love about My Darling Bride:

*Emmy and Grahamโ€™s chemistry is at the top of this list. Itโ€™s clear from their meet-cute in the hallway of a motel in Arizona. Their attraction to each other is undeniable, and Madden-Mills deftly builds on that attraction throughout their story, turning up the heat once they return to New York. It is everything you expect from one of her romances.

*Grahamโ€™s struggles with life change make for an emotional read. Through his characterโ€™s journey, Madden-Mills is able to highlight the inherent danger of football, notably CTE. She has written Graham to struggle with his identity and whether he can be more than football. Itโ€™s this struggle that infuses him with the โ€œgrumpโ€ trope so many of us love in romance; however, he is more cinnamon roll hero as he becomes Emmyโ€™s protector, even when he canโ€™t explain the โ€œwhyโ€ behind it. Even more, Grahamโ€™s family life is fraught, and Madden-Mills uses it as a contrast to Emmyโ€™s loving family, one she created.

*I connected the most with Emmy. Sheโ€™s the woman who has taken care of everyone around her. Through her journey, Madden-Mills interrogates the trauma of DV in oneโ€™s past. There is nothing overt about it in the story, so I donโ€™t think Madden-Millsโ€™s book requires a content warning, but itโ€™s good to acknowledge. With Emmy, we receive the warmth of the story. She loves and is loved, but she sacrifices her comfort for the lives of those she loves. This reality allows Graham to swoop in and care for her. Itโ€™s here where Madden-Mills builds the emotion of her story. When Graham cares, it gives Emmy (and the reader) hope for their future. However, Madden-Mills doesnโ€™t make it easy on her reader, and Grahamโ€™s subsequent disinterest in hiding his feelings breeds the angst of the romance.

I state all of this to show My Darling Bride‘s beauty, but I struggled with this story. There is something missing from this book: a disconnect at moments in the story. While I clearly understood Graham and Emmyโ€™s relationship, Grahamโ€™s indecisiveness throughout much of the story undermines the development of feelings in their relationship. When they are first intimate, I was confused because it was difficult for me to accept theyโ€™d move so quickly given Grahamโ€™s insistence on space. I found this occurring at different moments through their journeys. And it made the believability of their coupleship difficult.

Ilsa Madden-Millsโ€™s My Darling Bride is a beautiful story about recognizing what matters in life: love and family. But it doesnโ€™t quite have the same magic as her former stories, and I wonder if Graham and Emmy just needed a bit more spark to pull this book together.

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Stacy Travis’s Love You More, book 1 of her Buttercup Hill series โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: B+

Tropes: single dad; grump/sunshine; insta-attraction; small town romance; romantic suspense

Stacy Travisโ€™s newest book, Love You More, the first book of her Buttercup Hill series, adds to the tradition of small-town romances found in stories by authors such as Devney Perry, Catherine Cowles, Elsie Silver, etc.  Travis has deftly crafted a regional small-town romance much like the authors noted above. Given that I live in California, Iโ€™m excited about this series because it sits at my geographical back door. Even more, she has set up a compelling series, starting with Jax and Ruby. Hereโ€™s what I loved about Love You More:

  1. There is nothing better than grump/sunshine. Ruby is the light to Jaxโ€™s dark, and Stacy Travis has drawn their chemistry well in this story.
  2. Iโ€™m also a fan of the single dad (or parent) trope because we know cute encounters with the heroine are a deciding factor for their future. Ruby and Jaxโ€™s daughter, Fiona, are adorable together, instantly hitting it off, given their shared experience of losing a parent. Fiona adds levity to Jax and Rubyโ€™s fraught romantic journey.
  3. This is small-town romance at its best in a wine town such as Napa. Stacy Travis has carefully created this town, making us fall in love with it while also wanting more.
  4. The plot and character development are the most important parts of this story. I know readers will want more steam from these two, but, given that this is the first book of the series, Travis has taken the space to set up the region of her series while also doling out the beginnings of a mystery certain to thread through the other books of this series. Sheโ€™s made some keen decisions with the development of this series in this first book.
  5. Small-town romance needs a combination of fun and angst, and I think Stacy Travis has balanced those two well in her first book.

My biggest criticism of Love You More is the inconsistency in her characterization of Stella. There are moments in her story when her want for Jax versus the pull of her responsibility for her sister is confusing. She would accept Jax in her life to quickly turn around and spurn him out of her need to care for her college-aged sister. It was story whiplash, and I thought it interrupted the flow of her plot.

As the first book of a new series, Stacy Travisโ€™s Love You More, was a delight. Iโ€™ve read Stacy from the beginning and her growth as a romance writer is paying dividends in Stella and Jaxโ€™s story. I canโ€™t wait to find out Jaxโ€™s dadโ€™s secrets. I imagine, though, that Stacy Travis will keep us guessing.

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Annika Martin’s The Grumpy Billionaire โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: B+

Tropes: unrequited love; opposites attract; found family; grump/sunshine; billionaire MMC; rom-com

Gah, I donโ€™t want Annika Martin to ever stop writing grumpy billionaire romances. Seriously. Just when I think she canโ€™t write a different story, she finds one. Now, she has found a formula that seems to work for her: grumpy billionaire plus a heroine who keeps him on his toes, extrapolating his humanity through her erstwhile, independent way. Martinโ€™s newest story, The Grumpy Billionaire, is more of this, and it is sure to put a smile on your face by the end.

To get there, however, her billionaire MMC, Hugo, has to recognize his feelings for her FMC, Stella, and he has to become comfortable acting on them. Thankfully, it doesnโ€™t take him too long to recognize them, but it does take him a while to accept them. Martin has paced out her story well, building a mountain of chemistry between Stella and Hugo. Itโ€™s one of my favorite parts of this book. But Stellaโ€™s burgeoning understanding of Hugo is the piece de resistance of this book. If you fall in love with anything in The Grumpy Billionaire, itโ€™s the puzzle pieces clicking together that charm your pants off.

I love Annika Martinโ€™s ability to draw characters that are equal parts quirky and spicy. Her capacity to draw a swatch of characters over several books is special. She treats her readers to past beloved characters, and they work together to build a world that readers want to return to over and over again. Stella and Hugo now exist in this universe. We can also add their parents and Stellaโ€™s brother to that mix. Honestly, Annika Martinโ€™s world of billionaires makes me remember the days of Fisher Price Little People toys: so many options and potential stories to tell.

If youโ€™re looking for a story that will put a smile on your face, you should grab Annika Martinโ€™s The Grumpy Billionaire today.

BLURB:

Love wasnโ€™t part of the blueprint when high school sweethearts reunite in their small town. But this former military man never forgot the girl he left behind and heโ€™s more determined than ever to rebuild their relationship brick by brick and heart by heart.

Getting locked in the menโ€™s restroom during my motherโ€™s funeral wasnโ€™t exactly how I expected to run into my high school sweetheart. The one who got away. The one who broke my heart.

I could toss the busted doorknob in my hand at him, but Iโ€™d prefer to get the heck away. Because twenty years later, Knox Sylver isnโ€™t a teenage boy anymore but a broad-shouldered, thick scruff man with eyes that still look at me like Iโ€™m the only person in the room.

As a newly divorced mother of two teenagers, itโ€™s been a long time since anyone sees me. And Knox is definitely watching.

Unfortunately, he made choices in the past and I wasnโ€™t one of them.

According to him, that is ancient history.

Also, according to him, itโ€™s never too late for a second chance. Heโ€™s out to prove heโ€™s solid and stable, having returned to our small hometown, in a better place after a career in the military. Heโ€™s a local hero as a fireman and he wants to rekindle the flame between us.

Iโ€™m the one with decisions this round.

Do I stay where memories hurt? Or do I leave my past, and Knox, behind me again?

Review

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Karla Sorensen’s The Best Laid Plans โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: A

Tropes/Elements: grump/sunshine; forced roommate/proximity; renovation romance; found family; slow burn; former pro football player

Karla Sorensenโ€™s The Best Laid Plans begins like a lamb and ends with a lionโ€™s roar. There is a quiet to this story even in the midst of the banter between her MMC, Burke, and her FMC, Charlotte, a back-and-forth that highlights their burgeoning attraction. Itโ€™s about whatโ€™s not being said in Sorensenโ€™s newest story, the words and feelings that canโ€™t seem to be spoken which captivates me. And I have so many words and thoughts about this book that I struggle to bring any structure to this review. Let me just go where I want to go, and I hope you follow it and grab this book fast.

Karla Sorensen has always been able to craft chemistry. Sheโ€™s not an overtly erotic author. She infuses attraction and $ex into her books, but she doesnโ€™t grant us full access to all the details of those scenes. Instead, she develops the relationships between her characters so much so that, oftentimes, at least recently, her MMC and FMC donโ€™t consummate or give in to their attraction until late in the story. For this reader, this pacing is impeccable as it holds the reader in its thrall. I never get tired of the burgeoning relationship because every moment seems to matter for the future of her characters. Her ability to grab her readers quickly and keep them engaged throughout the story is her strength. This is definitely the case with Burke and Charlotte. And it is necessary for the depth and gravity of this bookโ€™s story.

Now, hereโ€™s where I might lose people but it canโ€™t go without mention because, aside from Burke and Charlotteโ€™s story, their fight against their attraction, their coming together, the falling apart, and their happily ever after, the true genius of Sorensenโ€™s The Best Laid Plans is its exposition and interrogation of grief. Yes, she lays this at the feet of Burke. She fashions his grief to be palpable for her readers, and she shows the futility of language to process loss through his characterization. Itโ€™s brilliant. Having recently lost a very good friend, I understand Burke and his messy grief process. Itโ€™s complex and uncomfortable and forever incomplete, and Sorensen captures this well.

But hereโ€™s where her capacity as an author shines: the house, the one that Burke and Charlotte renovate throughout the book, is a representation of the gravity of loss. The juxtaposition of a house seemingly dead being raised to life with the fixed death of one of his favorite people is profound. Itโ€™s chilling how Sorensen crafts this. How do you live life without that person? Sorensen uses the house as a metaphor for dying. Then, in the specter of that house, she underscores the message about living other peopleโ€™s dreams, both Burkeโ€™s fatherโ€™s but also Chrisโ€™s dream. For much of this book, Burke doesnโ€™t even know how to dream, so Sorensen gifts him one with the house. The depth of development in this analogy is brilliant and impactful and emotional. You cannot read this story and not feel the gravity of life. She even illustrates the multiple processes of grief through both Burke and Charlotte. It quite honestly left me spellbound.

Add to all of that some keen stylistic choices that excited this reader. Chapters Thirty-One and Thirty-Two are my two favorite chapters because Sorensen uses repetition in these chapters to feel like punches to the gut. As Burke and Charlotte struggle to handle the loss of their relationship, the repetition underscores it. The intentionality of these choices supports my contention that Karla Sorensen is an intelligent, intentional writer. And more people need to read her stories.

The Best Laid Plans has a flavor similar to Sorensenโ€™s former stories but has its own voice. That voice is a reminder of the fragility of life. If you leave this book without hugging those you love a little tighter, youโ€™ve missed the power of Karla Sorensenโ€™s message and her provocative new story.

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Lexi Blake’s Love The Way You Spy, book 1 of the Masters & Mercenaries New Recruits โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: B

Tropes: next generation; insta-attraction; bdsm; romantic suspense; found family; grump/sunshine; forced proximity; fake relationship

Lexi Blakeโ€™s Love The Way You Spy is a much-anticipated read. If youโ€™ve read her Masters and Mercenaries series (all iterations), you know this is the next generation of spies. I went into this book excited for Tasha Taggart and her love story. And I enjoyed the suspense of it, the curve balls that Lexi Blake loves to throw at her readers. For me, the suspense portion of the story was the most interesting, but I struggled with the love story. Honestly, I donโ€™t think this is Lexi Blakeโ€™s faultโ€ฆwell maybe a little. The pacing is a bit slow. I didnโ€™t need the constant reminders from Dare that he wouldnโ€™t be able to have a future with Tasha even though she provided him comfort and a safe landing space for his feelings. Even though he feels seen by her, he โ€œcanโ€™t have her.โ€ Dareโ€™s admonishments went a bit too far in this story.

Additionally, must Ian Taggart always save the day? I love him. Really I do. The found family trope of this story is the common thread of the Masters and Mercenaries universe. Itโ€™s one of the main reasons I continue to read these stories. And Love The Way You Spy is no different. The next generation, while struggling with fraught connections, has the comfort of the found family trope. The best part of Dareโ€™s journey is his realization that he can be loved, not just by Tasha, but also by a broader group of people including Ian Taggart. But Iโ€™d love for Papa Taggart not to be the ultimate rescuer. I recognize the forthcoming characters are young, but Iโ€™m hoping there will be other former Masters and Mercenaries characters to guide this talented crew through their professional and personal journeys.

Overall, I liked Love The Way You Spy, but it was a slower read than I expected, and I found that to be disappointing.

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s Review: Rebecca Jenshak’s Tempting the Player โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: A- / B+

Tropes: bodyguard romance; forbidden relationship; new adult romance; former celebrity; grump/sunshine

Rebecca Jenshakโ€™s Tempting the Player is my favorite of her Campus Wallflowers series. I believe it has a lot to do with its ability to wrap up a beloved series while potentially launching a new one. Even more, Jenshak has drawn Jane and Hendrick in such a way that they grab your attention from the start of their story. I was obsessed with Hendrickโ€™s want to protect Jane from an outside threat. His grumpy, closed-off exterior was unraveled with Jenshakโ€™s deft pacing. His story is particularly heartfelt as he navigates re-entering his family after a time away, a situation fraught with angry feelings and worry over his leaving again. Jenshak uses Janeโ€™s need for protection as the perfect catalyst for Hendrickโ€™s reconciliation with his brothers.

Janeโ€™s story arc is the foundation of Tempting the Player, as she must navigate an outside threat, the renewed attention of fans, and a hold on the normalcy of life sheโ€™s created since starting at Valley U. The suspense portion of Jenshakโ€™s story is no surprise, even though Jenshak tries to put us off the trail with other characters. Even though I was able to figure out the person threatening Jane, Jenshak shows her skill as a seasoned romance writer in the navigation of Hendrick and Janeโ€™s burgeoning forbidden relationship. Their chemistry and attraction are easy distractions in her story.

Lastly, I absolutely loved Hendrickโ€™s brothers, and Iโ€™m hoping there are future stories for this motley crew of โ€œlost boysโ€ – there is no better term for them. Jenshak has crafted them in such a way that makes them intriguing, specifically his brothers, Knox and Archer. Youโ€™ll find me downloading these stories, if Rebecca Jenshak decides to write them.

Tempting the Player is a beautiful end to this series of female friends. Yes, it keeps us at Valley U longer, and it entwines itself with Jenshakโ€™s beloved hockey and football teams. But this sweet sentence near the end of the book, โ€œa few weeks later, four wallflowers gather in the living room of their off-campus house,โ€ brought feelings of nostalgia and felt like an homage to the oft-mentioned Pride and Prejudice (from this series) and Little Women. There is nothing better to read than four friends who support and love each other through the ups and downs of falling in love.

โœ๐Ÿป Professor Romance’s 4.5 โญ๏ธ Review: Devney Perry’s The Brood, a Calamity Montana romance โœ๐Ÿป

Overall Grade: 4.5 โญ๏ธ

Tropes: grump/sunshine; loner MMC; small town romance; traveling FMC; forced proximity; age gap; best friend’s little sister

โ€œIf there was a woman who could will me to love her until my dying day, it was Iris.โ€

The Brood by Devney Perry is a captivating addition to the Calamity Montana series, featuring the enthralling romance between Wilder and Iris. Perry masterfully weaves the grumpy/sunshine trope into their story, creating a dynamic that is both heartwarming and electrifying.

One of the central themes of the novel revolves around the idea of finding one’s home in the heart of another. Wilder and Iris, two seemingly opposite souls, discover a profound connection that transcends their initial differences. The journey they embark on, as they learn to understand and cherish each other, is beautifully portrayed. Perry’s ability to convey the depth of their emotional bond is truly commendable.

Another poignant theme is the notion of self-forgiveness and moving forward. Both Wilder and Iris carry burdens from their pasts, and their struggle to come to terms with them is depicted with a raw and touching authenticity. The narrative explores the complexities of letting go, learning to forgive oneself, and embracing the possibility of a brighter future.

Unlike previous installments in the Calamity Montana series, Perry intentionally pulls back from incorporating the other characters, emphasizing Wilder’s solitary life before meeting Iris. This choice serves to underscore the profound impact Iris has on Wilder’s world, highlighting the transformative power of their love.

The emotional depth of The Brood is further heightened by Perry’s easy prose. The author has a knack for delving into the hearts and minds of her characters, allowing readers to feel every joy, every pain, and every moment of vulnerability. The intimate scenes between Wilder and Iris are charged with palpable chemistry, adding a steamy layer to their already intense connection.

Devney Perry’s ability to infuse a tale with such heartfelt emotion is a testament to her storytelling prowess. For fans of the grumpy/sunshine trope, this novel is an absolute must-read. The themes of finding a home in another and the power of self-forgiveness resonate long after the final page is turned. The Brood is a testament to the enduring magic of love and the capacity for redemption within us all.
