✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Adriana Locke’s The Proposal ✍🏻

Adriana Locke’s The Proposal is the type of romance story made to binge-read. It is a book that you’ll pick up and won’t be able to put down. She’s lying to herself if she thinks this is a true standalone because it introduces us to a family BEGGING for their own stories, but I digress.

The highlight of The Proposal is the burning chemistry between her main characters, Renn and Blakely. Renn is the best friend of Blakely’s older brother, and these two have toyed with each other for years. The sexual chemistry is off the charts between these two, and Locke shows her prowess as a romance writer when you desperately need them to jump into bed together from almost the first page. It’s clear from the start that they are destined for each other, and Locke does a superb job of making them loveable characters.

The pacing of the story is also well done. While they have a moment of drama, for the most part, Renn and Blakely are connected almost immediately. It isn’t rushed; Locke keeps them simmering on the stove for the first portion of her story, but she knows when to turn up the heat. It’s the pacing of their story that actually makes it unputdownable.

Additionally, she doesn’t mire her story in the forbidden nature (bro code rules) of Renn and Blakely’s pairing, thank goodness. A serious pet peeve of mine is the older brother taking his ire too far with the MMC when he breaks the rules. Locke gives it space in her book, and Brock takes his responsibility to Blakely seriously. However, his friendship with Renn is more important than his anger over his perception of Renn’s breaking of the bro code rules. Thank you, Adriana, for moving us quickly over that plot point.

Ultimately, Renn’s cinnamon roll hero characterization made me love the book. His facade is built on his player status, but it’s clear that he’s pined for Blakely for a long time, adding depth to his character development. In fact, while Locke doesn’t name it as a trope in her promotional graphics, it seems Renn was the first to fall, making him even more delicious. His protectiveness over Blakely coupled with his ardor for her is the final enticement of The Proposal.

What does it say about Adriana Locke as an author that she builds families that create a fervor in her fans for more stories from one book? This is the case with The Proposal. Renn and Blakely’s story feels like a launching pad for more stories from Renn’s family. I’m hoping those characters speak to Adriana Locke because I’m ready to give her my money right now.

“Banks!” Ashley calls, stopping me in my tracks.

“What?” I groan and face her again. “Call someone else. Whatever it is, call someone else to help her. I’ll even pay for it. It’ll be cheaper than the therapy I’ll have to endure after seeing her.”

I cross my arms over my chest. “Oh, I know that. I rode with her all the way to Orlando and back to pick up someone’s shit when they moved in with Maddox.”

She sighs.

I sigh back at her.

We watch one another. Neither of us says a word. But Sara? Sara says lots of words, many of which can be heard through the phone dangling in Ashley’s hand from across the room.

If Sara had called and asked for my help, I wouldn’t answer. The woman is hell on wheels. She’s headstrong and thinks she knows everything. Her aversion to physical labor is astounding.

If I’m water, she’s oil—oil that hasn’t been changed in a hundred-thousand miles. And I’m basically holy water, so it’s a no-go.

But it’s not Sara who’s asking for my help. It’s Ashley. And Ashley is family.

I blow out a long, hasty breath.

“I’ll let you come over for dinner tomorrow, too,” Ashley says, luring me in with her fluttery lashes.

Still, I hold strong and think it through.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Adriana Locke’s Fluke, a Carmichael Family series romance ✍🏻

Tropes: friends to lovers; childhood friends; fake ex-boyfriend relationship; he falls first; small town romance; found family

If you love a hero who is fairly uncomplicated, a fixer, incredibly handsome, and a master in the bedroom, then Adriana Locke’s Fluke is exactly the read you need right now. Jess Carmichael falls first, loves hard, and f[bleeps] like a king. Pippa has no chance against Jess’s capacity to love her, which makes Locke’s newest Carmichael Family’s story easy to get lost in.

In terms of romance angst, there isn’t much between Jess and Pippa. The tension of Locke’s story lies in Pippa’s past and the ways it informs her ability to be loved. Locke crafts Jess in such a way he uses the depths of his tenacity to love Pippa to break down her walls. This is why it’s hard NOT to fall in love with Jess and claim him as the best Carmichael. He’s fairly uncomplicated and knows he wants Pippa from the beginning of the story. For readers looking for a more complicated love story, you won’t find it in Fluke.

Besides Pippa’s arc which lands her in the arms of Jess, the addition of the Carmichael family along with Pippa’s best friend, Kerrisa, adds the supporting network needed for Pippa to recognize what it means to feel loved. I’m certain that Locke does several things right with her stories: creating mother figures who love their children’s significant others as hard as their children and developing the found family trope in ways that heal the hurts of the heroines of her stories. This is very true for Fluke.

If I have any criticism of this book, it’s the pacing of the story. While Jess and Pippa have known each other for years, much of that past isn’t developed in the story, and Locke makes assumptions that her readers will accept the later choices of her characters. Jess comments that Pippa is Kixx’s favorite, but we only see them together once before that. I struggled with the believability of these moments. The book would have been stronger had more of the past been developed.

Finally, Fluke feels more like a vehicle for Banks’s story (Flaunt, releasing in June) than a fully fleshed-out romance for Jess and Pippa. Don’t get me wrong. Jess Carmichael is the dreamiest Carmichael brother to date. He knows how to love Pippa, and he perseveres in his pursuit of her. The way that Locke has written him brings to mind the term “swoony.”

If you’re a fan of the band of brothers meets small-town romance, you’ll want to read Fluke. Even more, I dare you NOT to fall hard for Jess Carmichael. Adriana Locke makes it an impossibility.
