Chemistry is my love language.
I’ve always been able to separate feelings from chemosignals. A shot of dopamine, a dash of serotonin, and a sprinkle of oxytocin—and bam. You’re in love.
And when egg meets sperm, you’re pregnant.
I couldn’t even be surprised as I stared down at the little blue plus sign, because I knew exactly when and how, and with whom it happened.
When: approximately five weeks ago.
Who: one night stand.
How: prophylactic malfunction.
The upside? I don’t have to go looking for a suitable mate.
Genetically, he’s the cream of the crop. His musculature is a study in symmetry and strength, his height imposing and dominant. He is a man who thrives on control and command, a man who survives on intelligence and resourcefulness. A perfect male specimen.
And the whole package is wrapped up in a flawlessly tailored suit.
I’m having this baby, and he insists we’re well-suited to have it together. And what’s worse? He wants more, in the way of love and marriage.
But love isn’t real. It’s just a product of chemistry.
And if he changes my mind about that, we’re both in trouble.
“My oldest was diagnosed with autism in 2009 just days before my husband left for Afghanistan. He was gone for eight months while I navigated the autism world alone with a two-year-old and a baby. I turned to romance books to keep my sanity. I found out about LIFT and felt so empowered that the community that helps keep me sane as I walk through autism was raising money for autism!”

“Let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of this, shall we?”
Nuts?
Seriously, Hanson? Of
all the words in the English language, you choose nuts?
But hey, on the plus

Even so, I need to

“I do. I really do.”
Her tone shifts
instantly when she mentions her business, making me even more keen to hear her

I smile. A perfect,

I wake up
in the wreckage, ready to fight for Rue.
Only she is gone, stolen away by my archenemy.
I start to see red. No one touches my girl and expects to live.
The deck is stacked against us. Emotions are running high.
There is one thing that no one else realizes, though.
Rue is mine, and I will get her back if it is the last f*cking thing I do.
Jealousy is a relatively new emotion for me, filling my heart with a million sharp shards of glass. It scratches me raw so easily, until my heart was torn and bleeding.
Feeling it for the first time, find myself inferior in a whole new way, I sob
into my pillows helplessly.
Dryas comes into the bedroom a while later on quiet feet. I am glad he didn’t see the fit of tears that chased me out of the kitchen. Still, my eyes are red and puffy,
my nose still stuffed up. As he approaches the bed, I can’t help but wonder if
he compares me to her.
That thought, dark and vicious, seems to gnaw at my soul.
When he sits down beside me, I release a long-suffering sigh. Looking up at him, I’m embarrassed to even be having these emotions, yet incapable of feeling
differently. He pins me with that chartreuse gaze, those dark brows drawn low.
“I am sorry,” he begins, surprising me. “I should have told you about Aurelia from
the start.”
I push myself upright, sniffling. “I mean, I’m not your girlfriend. This isn’t a
relationship we are in, technically. You don’t owe me any explanations.”
He looks a little surprised. “No? What would you call it, then?”
My face heats up, my cheeks growing as red as cherries. I hesitate. “I… I don’t know.
We never talked about it. It just sort of… happened. One time turned into two,
two times to four…”
I splay my hand on the comforter, picking at a loose thread. Dryas sighs and shifts closer to me.
“Do I mean nothing to you, then?”
He takes my hand, pulling it against his torso. I glance up at him, my heart racing at his words.
“No. Of course not,” I reply, my words soft.
His lips lift in the gentlest smile. He’s devastatingly handsome in that moment, looking down at me with his brilliant yellow-green eyes.“Good. You mean something to me, too.”
He leans across and drops the perfect kiss against my bee-stung lips, gentle but firm, tender yet passionate. I open my mouth to him, my fingers clutching at the
sweatshirt covering his chest. God, how I love this man.

and tombstones.
I startle Martha laying a hand on her back as
she’s gunning for my class table. “Little Mr. Triplett needs a write-up to the
office, Miss Beard. In fact, I was just about to take him down there and get
things back in order here,” she huffs at me. Martha is the elementary school
equivalent of the SWAT. She runs a tight ship, and nobody messes with that.
“Yeah, Jake’s had a rough morning, but let’s
give him a hot minute and just see if he can pull himself out of whatever this
is. What’s he been doing?” I ask glancing over my shoulder toward the table
reserved for my students.
Hot damn.
That is most definitely not one of my
kindergartners.
Making a show of fanning myself, I tease,
“Miss Martha, you sure you don’t just want to go over there and flirt with that
fine specimen of man sitting next to Jake?” Because holy fuck is he ever?
Martha pauses and looks at the tall man folded
awkwardly into the bench and table combo that perfectly fits our smallest
students. “Miss Beard,” she says exasperatedly. “I’m old enough to be his
mother.” She flutters her hand at her throat, clutching at the neck of the
candy cane printed turtleneck that complements her black sweater vest, presents
and bows appliqued festively down the front.
“Doesn’t mean you can’t look.” I hit her with
a wink and lean in conspiratorially. “You calling dibs on him? Or can I go see
what has Jake all riled up?”
“Dear Lord, you’re just terrible,” she
mutters.
The man sitting smack dab in the middle of the
bench is obviously a source of great interest to my kids. Jake alternates
between sitting so close to the man a piece of tissue paper would feel
squished, and standing, holding court with his tall, muscly friend. Probably
his dad. He did mention that his father was home earlier. He’s got all the
tell-tale patience of a father visiting his excited kiddo at school. Helping
each child open whatever container or snack bag they hand him. Chatting with
each of them in turn.
Chloe Triplett is a very lucky woman if that man is warming her bed at night—when he’s in town, anyway. His broad shoulders test the tensile strength of the fabric of his plaid shirt, molding almost poetically around a muscular back, tapering in that perfect V to a well-formed ass. God forgive me for lusting after my student’s father-please and thank you. I pray silently. Closely cropped dark brown hair fades into maybe two-day scruff that peppers a strong jawline. Plump lips hitch up when the question of the moment is interrupted by Amelia telling him he’s got pretty eyes. His shoulders shake ever so slightly as he rumbles out a “thank you, and so do you.” Be still my heart.
Author KC Enders:
Karin is a New York
Girl living in a Midwest world. A connoisseur of great words, fine bourbon, and
strong coffee, she’s married to the love of her life who is also her best
friend. The mother of two grown men, she is proud to say that they can cook and
clean up after themselves, and always open doors for the ladies (you’re
welcome, world). Even though her boys no longer live at home, the big dogs
she’s rescued have taken up their empty space.
I have this secret fascination with J.A. Huss. She has this style that intrigues me. Let me give you a little bit of background about me to help me discuss her style. I wrote my master’s thesis on Ernest Hemingway. If you’ve read any of his books, then you’re familiar with the simple sentences and the space he creates between his sentences that make you pause and think about what resides in those spaces because, with Hemingway, there is meaning in the spaces.
When I read J.A. Huss’s books, it feels the exact same way. Her sentences read curt (don’t ask me…it’s the best way to describe it), but it is the space between the words and the sentences that make you question everything. And this is definitely true of her newest offering, Pretty Thing.
To begin, this was such a deviation from her most recent books which felt emotionally draining and heavy. Obviously, I love those types of books. However, this had a lightness to it even given the subject matter. Now, don’t get me wrong. I ugly cried in a few places in this book. It’s deep, and death is heavy. However, Kali and Aiden (and Kyle) make you love this story.
This is a forbidden “brother’s best friend” book. And Kyle, Kali’s brother, definitely steps in the middle of a burgeoning relationship between Kali and Aiden when they are younger. Honestly, he is fearless in wanting to keep them apart, and this creates the tension in the story. He is the tension in the story in so many ways.
Together, Kali and Aiden are light. The only drama that exists between the two of them is Kyle, which makes their eventual relationship so sweet to read. When they accept their love for each other (which comes fairly quickly), you want to wrap yourself in it because it is beautiful to read. You know, if they can transcend the Kyle complication, that they will have an amazing, loving, soul-matey kind of love. And it makes you swoon.
And therein lies the tension of this story: Kyle. His road block creates the drama. As such, Kali and Aiden continuously complicate their relationship, and the angst ensues. The beauty of this story comes in the end. I WILL NOT spoil it. You really must read it, but come prepared with a box of tissues because it will destroy your heart.
There was something so amazingly simplistic about Pretty Thing and its characters. Once I began reading the book, I could not and would not put it down. This trio will pull at your heartstrings and leave you with the most amazing bittersweet HEA. For me, this is one of my favorite J. A Huss stories.
There is so much to love about this final book in Olivia Ryann’s Protect series. I think the thing I love the most about this series along with the Cherish series is the evolution of the Aetos brothers. Arsen, Damen, and Dryas are bad guys. Seriously. They kidnap the women they eventually fall in love with, and they want self-gratification through their bodies whether they have permission or not. In the real world, this would be ugly and horrible. However, in the world that Ryann has niched out in her dark romances, it works. Oh boy, does it work.
For one, the reader falls for the “bad guy.” Yes, there are times when Dryas can seem unreasonable in the series. However, by this book, Protect, Dryas’s priorities are finally straight: save Rue and her sister and live a better life. At the beginning of this book, he is still enthralled with taking down Father Derrik. However, he is doing it this time for Rue, not solely for his former love interest. The reader cheers for this change because he makes the choice to live in the present instead of his past.
We also get the three Aetos brothers together in this book, and Dryas has his reckoning with Arsen. In that moment, one of the biggest surprises of the book happens. I won’t tell you how this works out, but, if you read Arsen’s series, then you will want to read this book to find out. It is definitely worth it.
Rue and Dryas are EVERYTHING in this final book. Both have finally come into their own as characters. There is action upon action upon action for these two that you hope they make it out in the end. However, this keeps the reader reading, and we can feel the pull of the two, watching them fall deeper in love with each other. This is a trope that I love with dark romance.
Protect is the PERFECT ending to this series. Honestly, it is a toss up which series I love more. The story is fast-paced, engaging, sexy beyond all measure, and will make your heart sing at the end. If you love a good dark romance, then you really must read this series and this book.
I have a confession to make before you read my review. This is my first KC Enders book. A Facebook friend of mine suggested I sign up for an ARC of the book to provide a review, and I trust her taste in books as we LOVE the same authors. So I did it. I signed up and received said ARC.
I give you this confession because I have not read the prior 2 or so books in the series. While this is book 3 (I think the final book), it does read like a standalone. Yes, there are characters mentioned in the book and stories alluded to in the story that made me feel a little left out, but it did not affect the story of Jack and Kate at all.
Now, to my review of Tombstones. Here’s the formula of success for a book like Tombstones: military guy + Kindergarten teacher + a month of fantastic $ex + secret baby = a great read. Tombstones is everything you love in a romance novel. The characters are incredibly likeable. I think Jack and Kate are two of the most well-mannered, mature, and nicest characters I’ve read in a while. Sadly, Jack is a bit clueless through some of the book. While he treats Kate well, he is your typical confirmed bachelor with no want for kids” kind of hero. You know, the type of hero who has the girl of his dreams, but he walks away from her because he can’t see the forest through the trees. That’s okay. As we all know, the clueless guy usually figures it out, albeit it is pretty late in the story.
Kate is patient and mature. Given her “situation” in the book, she could take steps to increase the drama of her life, but she doesn’t. She handles Jack leaving and her secret baby with a grace that makes her incredibly likeable.
Now, the reason I don’t give this book a full 5 stars is I needed a bit more “love” from these two. They are clearly attracted to each other, and they love each other’s company. However, I wanted to feel a deeper love between them. With the falling action after the climax, I had a hard time accepting Jack’s proposal because I didn’t necessarily read his love as undying. I think Enders could have developed that a bit more before ending the story.
However, there are so many aspects of this book that make it a must read. Obviously, I’ve focused on the characters, but the story flows. You do not want to put it down (at least, I didn’t). Additionally, all of the supporting characters make you wish you could live in Beekman Hills, New York and sit in McBride’s Public House at the bar being served by Finn or Gracyn. Even more, these characters don’t add more drama to Jack and Kate’s story (well, that’s not entirely true, but I don’t want to reveal a plot point); instead, they support them and add layers to the story.
I am extremely glad that my friend recommended I read KC Enders. When I clear out more of my Kindle library, I know I will read more of this series and more of her books. Tombstones has everything in it (hot military guy, secret baby, an engaging story) that makes this reader very, very happy.
