✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Layla Hagen’s Your Christmas Love ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you have never read a Layla Hagen book, then you’re missing out on these universes of families that she’s a professional at creating. The Bennett family and their cousins have provided many of her fans/readers entertainment and heartwarming stories as each of the children find love. Her stories run the gamut of romance tropes: second chances, friends-to-lovers, etc. Her newest book, Your Christmas Love, is hitting Kindles right before the holidays.

It follows the romance of Winston and Sienna. Sienna is the sister of Victoria who has married Christopher Bennett. It places us squarely back in the Bennett family adventures. Sienna works for Winston, and they are attracted to each other at first sight. Fighting their attraction and trying to save Winston’s family business are the threads of this story. When challenges arise for them, will they find their happily ever after?

What you should love about Layla Hagen’s Your Christmas Love is the following:

*Winston is this curt, no-nonsense employer, but he has a heart of gold. He protects Sienna in all the ways a hero should. As he draws closer to her, he becomes the type of hero that you swoon for.

*Sienna is the type of heroine who can bring a hero to his knees. She is so strong in her understanding of herself that her ability to push Winston makes her more heroic than him at times in the story. She’s the epitome of strong womanhood.

*The rest of the Bennett clan. This is one of the many reasons why Hagen’s readers continue to read her work. We love revisiting the family members that we’ve fallen in love with. It feels akin to wrapping yourself in blankets on a cold night with a mug of hot chocolate in your hand. We can count on the Bennett family to save the day, leading the hero and heroine to their happy ending. What’s not love about that?

*The happy ending. Every Hagen book ends in a happy ending for the reader. Your Christmas Love is no different. Usually, it’s a decision to be a couple, or it’s a proposal. You’ll have to read this book to find out Winston and Sienna’s happily-ever-after.

If you love a sweet romance with some moments of tension, then you should be reading Layla Hagen. She loves to create these characters who have a few flaws but rely on their family to get them through their troubles. In the end, everyone finds their happiness and love abounds. Your Christmas Love is here just in time for the magic of the holiday season. It will lift your soul and make you sigh in contentment when it’s done.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: L.J. Shen’s In the Unlikely Event ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s been twenty-four hours since I finished reading L.J. Shen’s In the Unlikely Event, and I’ve needed this time to try to find the words for this review. I’ve been thinking quite a bit about Shen as an author. Her fanbase, L.J.’s Sassy Sparrows (of which I include myself), is a rabid fanbase. I’ve been reflecting on this phenomenon. Yes, I believe her street team is largely responsible for creating this fervor. But it’s really something more. It’s the care and craftsmanship she puts into her writing that elicits the virulent response you find in her Facebook group. People want her books as soon as possible. Why?

Usually, it’s her evocation of the alpha-heavy hero. She has this way of bringing this type of hero to his knees at the feet of a heroine who carries an inner strength redolent of a warrior. He’s changed forever, and he and she find their happily ever after, even with his continued alpha tendencies. We find this over and over again in her books, and her storytelling is loved by many. She changes the stories, she changes the characters, and she changes their endings, but this thread, this distinct Shen voice, can be found in her work. And this voice resonates with her readers; her voice is the “thing” that keeps people rabid.

Enter In the Unlikely Event, her newest book. She warned her readers and her most devout fans that this book was different. She didn’t lie. Like I said at the beginning of this review, I needed some space and time from it because, while there is a melody that flows through it that is distinctly Shen, this isn’t typical L.J. Shen. It’s an iteration, but it does the thing that all of her other books do: invests you in her story in the most emotional of ways. This is a “several shades of Shen” tome.

There is this moment in a Shen book when your heart drops to your stomach. I’ve read almost every one of her books, and this moment is distinct in each of them. Usually, the hero makes a choice that indelibly changes the relationship between the hero and heroine. Honestly, I think we, her readers, live for this moment. It makes us feel alive and connected emotionally to the story. In the Unlikely Event does this same thing. In fact, this moment begins fairly early in the story. My heart was pounding, and I felt nauseous as our hero, Mal, looked at the heroine, Aurora “Rory,” with disdain and revenge in his eyes. I died a little bit because Shen had crafted their connection earlier in the book so perfectly that this moment felt like a knife to my gut. These moments continue throughout the book, and they’re a constant reminder of Shen’s ability to emotionally invest us in her storytelling. This is her gift, her genius. This is one of the reasons her readers obsess over her upcoming books. It’s why I obsess over her writing.

Unlike her past books, Malachy “Mal” doesn’t read like her typical heroes. I wouldn’t say he is necessarily “alpha” although he has aspects of this in his characterization. Instead, there is a sensitivity and humor to Mal’s character. He’s not typical Shen. He’s more. I appreciated him instantly. But I think I like Rory even more, and this is different for me as an L.J. Shen reader. I tend to prefer the heroic journey of our hero over the heroine. Yet, Rory’s strength to endure Mal’s ire, her mother’s meddling, her boyfriend’s assumptions, and her best friend’s deceit makes her my favorite character in this book. Even at the outset of the story, her summation of Mal’s inept handling of women and Kathleen made her more likable to me. It took me longer to appreciate the depth of Mal’s characterization. As the story progressed, I struggled with him even more. Yet, it’s this tension between wanting to protect Rory and feeling disdain for Mal that illustrates Shen’s want to challenge her reader about these characters and their journey. From its beginning, this romance is the story of soulmates, two people fated for each other, and the obstacles set before them. Rory and Mal’s disconnect is Shen’s way of problematizing their journey, worrying us about their future. This is decidedly Shen, even if the typical characterizations are different.

What I found MOST interesting about In the Unlikely Event is her use of point of view and its break of the narrative. The chronology of this story is broken at various points by the past. Shen uses strategically placed flashbacks to provide the backstory of Mal and Rory. She doles these details out, building the tension between Mal and Rory. This is the means by which she drives us forward into the mire of their emotional drama. And it’s delicious. However, she uses outside points of view, interrupting the tension of the story. It’s intriguing, and I’m still trying to figure it out. Again, this is not a typical Shen book. She’s playing with narrative structure and point of view in a way that felt fresh and different from other romances, from her own voice. These interruptions also add humor to the story, another trait so often lost in the seriousness of her storytelling.

I love surprises. Even more, I love it when writers try something new. Even when it might not seem like the new tactic works, it’s important because it shows a writer striving forward, challenging themselves. In the Unlikely Event is Shen’s ode to her storytelling. Infusing her naturally serious, drama-filled romance with aspects of rom-com, crafting a hero who is more artistic and sensitive than most of her other heroes, and offering a heroine who seems more emotionally insightful, Shen is flexing more of her writing muscle. I enjoyed and appreciated every moment of her newest book. In the Unlikely Event suggests that the trope of soulmates fated for each other can always use a fresh look.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karina Halle’s Disarm ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“It didn’t matter. I saw you and I knew we were alike. I knew you were like me. Alone in this world. Unmoored. Looking for something. Family.”

Psst…I have a confession. First of all, before I confess, you need to know something. I love Karina Halle. Seriously. I love her story-telling, her heroes and heroines, and the way in which she tugs at my heartstrings. As far as I’m concerned, there isn’t much that she CAN’T write from rom-com to contemporary to romantic suspense.

Also, I’m not a fashionista. I have a basic working knowledge of the fashion world, and I definitely don’t ascribe to the latest trends. Instead, I do me. I like what I like, and I buy it. Period. End of story. When she announced that she was writing a series of standalones centered in the world of fashion, I was open to it, but I didn’t think I could connect with her characters. Yet, that’s fiction, right? We don’t always run into billionaires in our life. But whatever…

So here’s my confession. I liked her first book in this series, Discretion. Notice I said “liked.” Olivier and Sadie were fiery tempests of bedroom canoodling, and the overarching story of the Dumonts kept me reading it. But, unlike her other books, I wasn’t in love with it. I said so in my review of that book. There was some Karina Halle magic missing, and her acknowledgments for that book indicated why. Yet, after meeting her at Book Bonanza, I became excited about this next book, Disarm, and DEFINITELY for the third book, Disavow. Why? Because Halle undertook to make us, her devout readers, fall in love with some characters that seem unlikeable. I was colored excited.

When Disarm hit my Kindle I was engaged in reading other ARCs, but I saw it sitting there with its hot cover model, and I was dying to read it. How could Halle make me fall in love with Blaise, the son of the villain of the story? Well, she does it beautifully by handing us his soul in this book. It is clear from the first page that this story fell out of Halle’s heart. Seraphine and Blaise’s journey in this book will pull at your soul and place you squarely in her “edge-of-your-seat” storytelling.

Disarm offers us the story of Seraphine and Blaise, cousins with no blood relation. Blaise feels like an outsider in his family. He is invisible and decides at some point that living under his family rule won’t help him, so he undertakes to live life on his own terms. At least for a while. Seraphine is adopted, and her adoptive parents provide her with a life of her dreams. On the death of her father, Seraphine is suspicious that her father was murdered by her uncle, Blaise’s father. Undertaking to investigate this, she enlists the help of people who undermine and put her life in danger.

From their youth, Seraphine and Blaise have been attracted to each other. Seemingly forbidden, both fight their attraction. Giving into it one night, they are almost found out, and Blaise hides behind his mask to push Seraphine away for her protection. However, life eventually puts them together, and Blaise can no longer keep his distance. When her life becomes endangered, will Blaise stand with his family, or will he accept his love for Seraphine and protect her?

One of the issues I had with Discretion was its lack of depth of character. I struggled with understanding Olivier’s motivation and intense attraction to Sadie. On a surface level, it made sense, but I never felt connected to them. In Disarm, this is NOT the case. From the outset of the story, your heart bleeds for Seraphine and Blaise. Both of them seemingly don’t belong. It’s the tie that binds them, but it also makes your heart hurt that, surrounded by family, they feel like outsiders. As they age, their connection grows stronger, and they can see that alienation in each other. It’s in that connection where you find the beauty of this story. I love Blaise and Seraphine more than Olivier and Sadie because their pairing makes sense even though it has a forbidden nature.

Halle’s Disarm has a story that pulls you forward. When I finally sat down to read her romance, I could NOT put it down. From its beginning to its end, your heart is pounding out of worry for Seraphine and Blaise’s safety because Gautier is dastardly. Between Pascal and Gautier, there is no sense of rightness. From one page to the next, you never know who Blaise can trust to keep Seraphine safe from the evil of his family. The care that Halle takes in crafting the suspense of this romance makes you turn the page, hoping they will find their happy ending. I loved the suspense of this book. At its end, it’s unclear how the Dumont label will survive.

Even more, Blaise’s journey towards Seraphine offer some of the most sentimental, heart-wrenching parts of the story. In the first book, we get a sense that Blaise is different from his brother, Pascal. However, Seraphine and her brothers cannot trust in him. In Disarm, Blaise’s true nature shows us his sensitivity and his love. He really is “disarming” in this story, upending his narrative in the context of his family’s story. He is believable as a romantic hero, and Halle’s genius in this book is making us fall in love with him.

As I stated at the outset of this review, I didn’t know what to think about The Dumonts. What I’ve come to find, especially through Karina Halle’s newest book, Disarm, is a story of second chances. We should all deign to withhold our judgment of others because, as this book suggests, love can prevail. It can change our hearts and push us to be better people. One thing I can guarantee about Disarm: you will fall in love with Seraphine and Blaise, and you’ll look forward to Halle’s rendering of Pascal’s story in Disavow.

“It was this. It was a future. It was love. It was creating a life and sharing a life of love. And I found it with this man.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Katie Ashley’s Shelf Awareness, a SmartyPants Romance story ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

I’m shook. No…really. Shook. How has SmartyPants Romance challenged romancelandia? I’ve been blessed to read and review the ARCs associated with the various authors? And each book has truly been a treasure. Each one has connected us back to the folks of Penny Reid’s Green Valley, Tennessee or Chicago. Every time I read one of the books, I return to my favorite folks: the Winston Family and the Knitting Circle Ladies.

In the newest book, Shelf Awareness, Katie Ashley plops us once again in Green Valley. When I first began reading her story, I thought for sure it sounded similar to Tempest’s story in Stud Muffin. While the heroines share the common theme of infidelity, our heroine in Shelf Awareness, Finley’s infidelity comes in the form of a different package. It’s as devastating as Tempest’s; however, its ramifications don’t reach in the same way that they do in that story. Instead, what Shelf Awareness helps us understand is that we can miss the reality of our relationships when we are blinded by love or the want of love.

Finley, a newspaper editor and reporter, finds out her husband has been unfaithful to her, and there is no chance for reconciliation. She decides that she needs a change. She leaves Atlanta and plants herself in Green Valley, the town where her grandmother, GramBea, lives. With no job and a broken dream, her grandmother motivates her to remedy the job situation. With her help, Finley finds a job with the Green Valley Library in the newly-created local native American history room. Inspired by this change, Finley begins to realize a different career path for herself. In the midst of this change, she becomes attracted to an IT volunteer, Zeke, who is helping the library with its renovation and system changes. As she grows closer to Zeke, Finley realizes that her husband did not support her in the way she needed. In Zeke, she finds a friend and an eventual love interest. Unfortunately, Zeke is on sabbatical from his job in Seattle. When he returns home, will they find a future together, or is this a momentary connection?

What Shelf Awareness has in spades is humor. Laugh out loud, belly-laughing humor. This seems at odds with the content of the book. I mean, infidelity? How can that be made funny? Katie Ashley doesn’t make that funny. Instead, she creates humor in other areas to allay the sting of the story’s tension. She crafts a community of women in GramBea, Aunt Dot, and Estelle who act as sages for Finley. They also lighten the topic of the story with their antics. Ashley likens them to the Golden Girls, and these women don’t disappoint. Each moment they infiltrate the book, there is a guaranteed laugh and they steal every scene. Even more, as Finley’s journey of self-discovery and healing progresses, she challenges her grandmother to make changes in her life. This provides a lesson that wisdom can be found in the mouths of the young and old.

As hero and heroine, Zeke and Finley are well-developed. Honestly, since this book is written from Finley’s point of view, she feels more round as a character than Zeke. His own journey is interesting in this book, but we can only understand his experience from the point of view of Finley. However, he is everything you love about a hero: compassionate, thoughtful, articulate, empathic, and wise. His only alpha tendencies occur in the bedroom; instead, his nature leans toward kind and caring.

Like her Golden Girls, Finley’s character development places you on a slide rule of emotions. One minute, you will mourn for the end of her marriage and the way it transpires. The next minute, you will find yourself doubled-over laughing at her antics. There is a scene with a Ben Wa ball that made me laugh until I had tears in my eyes. Yet, most important about Finley is her growth. Zeke acts as the impetus for her change. He motivates her to try new experiences, and she embraces them, even with fear or trepidation. Her divorce allows her the opportunity to develop, to grow. And this is the essence of this book. The awareness in this book is found in the need for us to self-reflect on our lives to ensure we are still growing, not stagnating. As Finley’s journey unfolds, we are reminded that life is about the journey, not the destination.

The SmartyPants Romance books provide us with such a depth and breadth of experience. That’s been my favorite part of reading them. Shelf Awareness by Katie Ashley is no different. She designed Zeke and Finley to inspire us to remember what matters: to be loved and to have fun. This is what you’ll find a lot of in this book. From a comic-con to a Golden Girls allusion to an escaping Ben Wa ball to finding one’s birth parents and that aftermath, Shelf Awareness has everything you need to be entertained and challenged.

USA Today bestseller, Nana Malone’s love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense she “borrowed” from her cousin.

It was a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana, and Nana was a precocious thirteen. She’s been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With her overactive imagination, and channeling her inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before she started creating her own characters.

While she waits for her chance at a job as a ninja assassin, in the meantime Nana works out her drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as she thinks she is.

✍🏻 Are you ready for Staci Hart’s second book in the Bennett Brothers series? Gilded Lily is coming December 5th. Check out the gorgeous cover while you wait for it! ✍🏻

Gilded Lily, the second in the Bennett Brothers series from Staci Hart, is coming in only 17 days. I am so excited! Check out the beautiful cover for this upcoming release. I love the vibe of this series and the covers are to die for! Mark your calendars for December 5th!

They say there’s no such thing as perfect. But I’ve built my life to perfection—the perfect boyfriend, the perfect apartment, the perfect career planning celebrity weddings. My job—my only job—is to make sure every event is absolutely and completely perfect.

What’s not perfect? Kash Bennet.

And I wish I didn’t find that so appealing. I could have told you every perfectly imperfect thing about the gardener at Longbourne. Like his hair, lush and black and far too long. Or his nose, the flat bridge of a Greek god, bent a little like it’s been broken. Or his size. Beastly. Roped and corded with muscles, gleaming with sweat and peppered with dirt.

There’s no escaping him, not if I’m going to use his family’s flower shop for my events.

But nothing is what it seems. And in the span of a heartbeat, my perfect life is turned inside out.

They say the best way to get over somebody is to get under somebody new. When Kash offers his services to the cause, it sounds like the perfect plan.

What’s not part of the plan? Falling in love with the gardener.

But they were right—there’s no such thing as perfect.

And I’m the fool who finds out the hard way.

Everyone hates parts of their job.
Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.
But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.
Except for Luke Bennet.
The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint. When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him. Almost.
He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.
Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.
Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
