I arched my brow at her. “I bragged about knowing you so well…but man. I did not see this almond croissant massacre coming. What do you have against almonds? Or was it the amount of butter that offended you? Because as a fitness expert, let me tell you butter isn’t the enemy. Sugar is the enemy.”

She laughed. “I, uh…I might have some anger management issues.”

I took the bag from her and peeked in. There were knuckle marks against the outside of the croissant. Literal knuckle marks. I barked a laugh. “Elaina Dyker. Did you punch the croissant?”

She laughed, pressing her lips together as though this would hide the fact that I saw her adorable little giggle. She brought her thumb and forefinger up beside her temple. “Maybe a little.”“Did you even try a bite?”

She shook her head no. “I like my routine. I like my daily lunch of yogurt and almonds.”

I made a face. Because she had to be exaggerating. Sure…she liked them. But having that same thing every day? Even chocolate cake every day would get tedious. “You can like yogurt and almonds but still indulge every now and then, you know.” I reached in and pinched off a piece of the smashed croissant, holding it out toward her lips. “C’mon. Live a little. I promise you, it is actually healthy, if that’s your concern.” Not that she needed to be concerned about that. “Almond flour. Gluten free. Grain free. Only two net carbs. The only sugar is the honey in the honey roasted almonds and the natural sugar in dates.” Her eyes grew wide at that and I knew I had hooked her.

She reached out her hand to take the piece of croissant from me, but I pulled back. “Nuh-uh,” I teased. “We can’t have your fingers getting sticky. Might ruin that fancy suit you’re wearing.”

She rolled her eyes, but parted her wet lips, her tongue peeking out just enough for me to place the croissant on top of. She moaned as soon as it hit her mouth, and her eyes fell closed as she slowly chewed and swallowed. “That’s…that’s healthy?”

I nodded. “See? I’m not just a pile of muscles. I’ve got some talent, too.”

Her head fell to the side. “I never said you weren’t talented. I just wish you wouldn’t show off quite so much of your other assets.”

I grinned. “I thought you liked my assets?”

“I do,” she answered absentmindedly, then immediately shook her head, realizing what she’d said. “I mean, I did.”

About Katana

As an author and a story-teller, it is the lifeblood to which my ideas take flight. And I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Occasionally someone (ie – my husband) will try to secretly switch out my beloved regular coffee for decaf. I always know the difference. ALWAYS (I’m looking at you, SEAN).

I am incapable of achieving the perfect ponytail. I’m dyslexic. I can never wear white without spilling on myself. And I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice (gasp!).

When I was younger and stole my mother’s Harlequins to read beneath the covers with a flashlight (seriously, did we ALL do this? I think we did.), I wanted to read about the tough as nails heroine. The perfectly imperfect girl with quirks and attitude and sass. And the anti-heroes who were anything but “Prince Charming.” Forget the knight on a white horse… give me the bad boy on a motorcycle.

So, now, I write those romance novels I craved to see on the shelves all those years ago—the sassy heroines. The badass heroes. I spend my days in the throes of my imagination, and am loving every minute of it. I can travel anywhere and become anyone I want to be. One day, I’m a mechanic in Boston and the next, I’m a vampire stripping in Las Vegas.

Since penning my first novel back in 2012, I’m now an international author with 15 published books, in a wide range of contemporary romance genres–(Paranormal, New Adult, Small town, Erotic Suspense… you name it!).

After living for a decade in Brooklyn, NY, I took the plunge and moved to beautiful (although kinda chilly) Portland, Maine. I now live full time in ‘Vacationland’ with a kind of mean cat, a mellow chihuahua, and a very NOT mellow lab-pittie mix. Oh, yeah… there’s a husband who draws comics somewhere in that mix, too. I can usually be found in a coffee shop with my nose in my laptop wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have to begin my review with candid honesty. I did not read the first book in this series, and I think I may have missed the depth of Story and Greyson’s story. Yes, this is steamy. Yes, their chemistry flies off the page. Yes, you pine for them to end up together. However, this book takes it in a different direction in the end, and a small part of you dies a little. The emotional one-two punch of this book will keep you reading especially through those moments that tear at your heart. This suggests that Mary Catherine Gebhard can weave romance together in a way that grabs at your soul. If you love angsty romance with an ill-fated hero and heroine, then you will want to read Stolen Soulmate. It’s steamy, dirty, and will bring you to your knees.

About the Author:
I started writing the moment I could read. My first characters were Wibbley and Squig and I used MS Word and clipart to bring them to life when I was a kid in elementary school. I started seriously thinking about being a writer in High School and I remember the day exactly, because it was such an epiphany. I was always so uncertain. You know how everyone was always asking what you wanted to be when you were older? Well I NEVER could decide.

I wanted to be a marine biologist.

An actor.

A FIRE FIGHTER (thank you Joaquin Phoenix in Ladder 49 for that phase).

One day it hit me—A WRITER. I could do it ALL. Then you couldn’t stop me from writing. I penned my first novel at fifteen (but don’t ask me to show it to you, because it’s like I was in competition to beat the thesaurus). When I was diagnosed with a chronic illness, writing became even more important, because it became my therapy. When I wrote my characters, suddenly I wasn’t so alone.

These days you can find me daydreaming about where to travel with my husband, singing in my car, or lost in the newest K drama. And planning my next novel, of course

I have a soft spot for epic love stories. Finding yourself attached to the hero and heroine from the days of their youth, dying a little bit when their young love is shattered, reading them take different paths away from each other, and finding each other again when their hearts are bigger and matured and can handle the depth of their love takes me on a journey that both steals a piece of my heart and my soul. For authors to craft a story of this nature in such a way that both titillates and engages their readers is impressive. To this end, Tara Leigh is impressive in the wake of her newest book, We are Us. 

Everything I’ve noted above is true of We are Us. The burgeoning love of Gavin and Poppy is a simple one, grounded in mutual affection. As these two fall deeply for each other, Leigh forbodes their connection in her beautiful words: “like a spider’s web, the connection Gavin and I forged is intricate and beautiful. And so very, very fragile.” Their beginning is haunted: Gavin and Poppy sit in a shadow of their families, both abusive and both ineffective in meeting their basic needs. As such, Leigh shows us clearly that their initial coupling is fraught, and we, the readers, will endure pain before Gavin and Poppy can find their happy ending. 

It’s in this pain where growth exists. One of my favorite parts of Leigh’s book, believe it or not, isn’t the romance (I mean, it actually is a beautifully painful one that everyone should read for its messages about living small and contented with “just enough”). Instead, my favorite part of Leigh’s book lies in her acknowledgments. It is there where Leigh flays herself open, allowing us insight into a bit of the backstory for We are Us. The truth of Poppy’s story burrows deeper into your heart when you realize Poppy represents so many women who find themselves in situations beyond their understanding. There is a bravery in her that becomes hidden by an ambition to live a bigger life than her mother. While it could seem short-sighted, it’s simply a defense mechanism, learned through years of emotional and mental abuse. You can’t help but fall in love with her, wanting to protect Poppy from the arrows of pain coming her way. However, through Poppy’s characterization, that pain brings clarity to Poppy’s life. It helps her mature so that she and Gavin can find their happy ending. Herein lies Leigh’s genius. Her ability to see the totality of Poppy’s story for her readers and craft her in such a way that you find yourself angered by her, protective of her, and empathic over her situation. These feelings are the art of Leigh’s We are Us. 

Since most of this story is written from Poppy’s point of view, we don’t get much of Gavin’s inner monologue which leaves us at a disadvantage for understanding him as the hero of this romance. We can note his actions, and we understand his sense of justice and his integrity. But we don’t get a strong sense of him as a romantic hero. With that, Leigh suggests that this book is Poppy’s story, that Tucker and Gavin, to a certain degree act as the men who punctuate her life. That isn’t to say that the reader lives for Gavin and Poppy finding their way back to each other. However, if you intend to get a sense of the men in this story, that isn’t the point for We are Us. Instead, this story seems to be a romance between Poppy and herself. She finds her power, her voice, and her peace throughout the course of this romance. She falls in love with her truth, after over a decade of fighting it. This is Leigh’s second bit of genius: writing a story that encapsulates the journey of a woman and creating a need for this woman to learn to love herself just as she is. Gavin and Poppy’s ending is idyllic, even with a bit of drama folded in. That is the big pay-off for enduring Poppy’s emotional, fraught journey towards herself. 

This is my first Tara Leigh book. I feel blessed to have read it because it bleeds the truth of so many of us: always wanting more instead of loving ourselves in the present. It’s, unfortunately, a hard lesson to learn for any of us. Tara Leigh’s We are Us is beautifully written and beautifully told. From its cover to its acknowledgments, it’s a book with a big heart and a big soul.
