CROWNE OF LIES TEASER

Excerpt

“I don’t think your mother’s convinced,” I said, letting him lead our dance.

He glanced up at his parents, then back at me. “Let’s fix that.”

When he leaned down to kiss me, I put my hands flat on his chest.

Logan wasn’t my type. He had things I needed now, but nothing I wanted for the future. I’d die of boredom with him, and I was clearly not what he had in mind when he imagined a happy marriage. But some things needed to be said out loud.

“Wait,” I said. “We have to get divorced at some point, and…” I paused to organize my thoughts and failed. “There’s a lot of kissing and… it’s necessary. I understand. But the thing is…” I stopped myself, meeting the cool blue of his eyes. “I don’t want you to get confused.”

“About what?”

“We’re getting divorced.”

Anyone who heard his laughter without hearing what we were talking about would have thought he was delighted with the woman he loved. “Yes, Estella. We’re getting divorced.”

“No feelings,” I said. “Right?”

“None whatsoever.”

“Okay. Kiss me.”

It must have been the champagne and the music. Definitely the way his arms held me so tightly, rocking back and forth with the rhythm.

No feelings, sure. But Logan kissed like he meant it, and the champagne fizzed inside me, bubbles popping up from the base of my spine, shaking long dormant nerves awake. His hands stayed in an appropriate position, but all I wanted was to feel them stroke lower, deeper, where I shuddered with desire.

“Stop,” I said, pulling away.

“You all right?”

“Fine, just… I need a second.”

“You’re flushed.” He brushed the backs of his fingers along my cheek. “That’s how I know you want to fuck. Make a note.” He spun me away and rolled me back.

“How do I know when you want to?”

“You’re in the room.”

I laughed. It was such an act. So fake. So over the top, yet when he guided me in the dance with a smile on his face, I let myself live it. For one dance, then two, we were at our most convincing, acting as if there wasn’t another soul for miles. He looked at me as if he wasn’t faking it, and when he kissed me, I kissed him back as if it was all real.

The music stopped as another round of trays came around.

“Are you hungry?” he asked, running his lips along my neck. “There’s a room with dinner somewhere.”

“We should mingle. I don’t want to make a bad impression.”

He looked away, then back at me with a heat I didn’t expect. “If they could see what was in my head, they’d be impressed.”

“What’s in your head?”

“Getting my hand under your dress and finding out if you’re wet.”

“Logan,” I scolded in a hiss. “We just said—”

“We said no feelings.” He took me by the chin. “If I took you right now, fucked you raw, gave you a dozen orgasms and came deep inside you, it would mean nothing to me.”

My panties were soaked through. “Me neither.”

He looked over my shoulder as if he needed a moment to think, then found my hand and squeezed it. “Come.”

He pulled me off the dance floor.

“Where are we going?”

We went down a stairway we hadn’t before, past a security guard, and into a closed hallway with double doors at the end. He pushed me into a wall with a kiss that wasn’t like the others. It was thoughtless, reckless, uncontrolled. It was a cyclone of desire I was already caught in, spinning upward, limp-willed with the force of it, because it was my whirlwind too.

About CD Reiss

CD Reiss is a New York Times bestseller. She still has to chop wood and carry water, which was buried in the fine print. Her lawyer is working it out with God but in the meantime, if you call and she doesn’t pick up she’s at the well hauling buckets.

Born in New York City, she moved to Hollywood, California to get her master’s degree in screenwriting from USC. In case you want to know, that went nowhere but it did give her a big enough ego to write novels.

She’s frequently referred to as the Shakespeare of Smut which is flattering but hasn’t ever gotten her out of chopping that cord of wood.

If you meet her in person, you should call her Christine.

Excerpt:

“Close your eyes.”

I slant a curious look at Gavin, taking in his kiss-swollen lips and flushed skin, his untamable mop of hair and the blaze of excitement lighting up the blue of his corneas.

Gavin squeezes my hand reassuringly as I do what he’s asked, then slowly walks me the remaining few steps toward our cave. Without vision, my other senses are heightened. The cry of birds sounds closer, like they are perched just overhead instead of on branches thirty or forty feet above. The bite of the breeze on my skin is sharper, each gust sending a chill racing along already sensitive nerve endings. The smell of ripe earth and rich evergreen and the clean, bracing scent of Gavin himself is downright intoxicating, my head swimming as I pull breaths deep into my lungs.

Most of all, the moonstone pendant laying against my collarbone is making my chest tingle, my heart fluttering against my ribcage.

“Okay, open them.”

I do, immediately gasping in surprise at what Gavin’s done to our little cave. There are candles burning and scattered rose petals—no, poppy petals—and a basket filled with drinks and snacks. A pile of blankets and pillows.

“You did all this for me?” I ask, my voice sounding whispery and weird.

I feel whispery and weird.

I’ve never had a birthday like this. I’ve never even imagined a birthday like this. First the necklace and now, seeing the lengths Gavin has gone for me…

Beneath the surface of my skin, I’m a chaotic mess of emotions. I don’t know what to say, how to act. This is uncharted territory for me.

“Of course,” he says, as if it’s nothing. But it’s not nothing. It’s everything.

Before I dissolve into a teary puddle, Gavin reaches into his pocket and pulls out a deck of cards. “You taught me how to play gin rummy—how about I teach you to play poker?”

A strangled laugh leaves my throat. “I think that’s fair.”

We sit down and Gavin spends a few minutes going over the basics of the game before dealing out the cards. It’s not as easy as gin rummy, but I get the hang of it after a few rounds.

And when Gavin lifts a mischievous brow and asks, “Want to make things interesting?” I know exactly what he’s doing. Not just poker. Strip poker.

That’s when I realize just how much planning has gone into tonight. Beyond buying me an expensive present. Beyond pimping out our cave. Gavin found a way to make my first time—our first time—a mix of old and new. An experience evoking our past and celebrating our future.

I’ve imagined the night Gavin and I would finally go all the way a million times. But I’d only focused on the physical aspects. Would it hurt? Will there be blood? What if I do it wrong?

It never crossed my mind that he would take such care with… everything.

But, of course, it should have.

Gavin Cross is one of a kind.

And he’s mine.

✍🏻 Blog Tour & Excerpt Reveal: Roxie Noir’s The Hookup Equation, another Loveless Brothers’ book, is Available now! You’ll love Caleb and Thalia’s story. ✍🏻

THUE - BT banner

Teach me everything.

The Hookup Equation, an all-new romantic comedy that is “filled to the brim with laughs and emotion” from Roxie Noir, is available now!

Read my 4  ⭐️ REVIEW!

The Hookup Equation Final

My whole life, I’ve been a good girl. I follow rules like nobody’s business. I obey guidelines like I was born to it. Show me a line, and I’ll toe it.

I’m even a twenty-two-year-old virgin. Good is my middle name.

And then, I break one tiny little rule. Miniscule. Inconsequential.

Next thing I know, I’m trapped with an incredibly handsome stranger. He’s got eyes like cut emeralds, biceps that makes my head spin, and a smile that has me rethinking all my life choices.

We escape a bar bathroom together. We go on an impromptu date. We share the hottest kiss I’ve ever had, one that leaves me panting for more. We promise to see each other again.

Turns out, we see each other the next morning.

In my calculus class.

Which he’s teaching.

My handsome, sexy date is Professor Loveless, and we’ll be seeing each other plenty. Every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday all semester.

There’s no choice but to call it off. We both have too much at stake: I could lose my scholarship, and he could lose his entire career.

But I can’t call off the way I feel.

I can’t call off the way he looks when he rolls up his sleeves and explains imaginary numbers.

I can’t call off the heated glances, or the way our hands touch when I hand in my homework, or the memory of his body pressing against mine that night.

I’m a virgin.

He’s my professor.

And if we give in, it could cost us both everything.

But I’m so tired of being a good girl.

Excerpt

“I’m sorry I was a jerk on Friday night,” I start over, moving closer. “I still think that what I said was valid, but I didn’t have to —”

He steps closer, leans in.

“—I didn’t have to be an asshole about it,” I say into his ear.

“I think I deserved it,” he says. His lips brush my ear, and my eyes flutter closed.

Don’t, I tell myself. Don’t do a single thing that isn’t apologizing for your behavior.

As if I didn’t seek him out. As if I didn’t drag him into this tiny, cramped back staircase.

“No, you were right,” I tell him, automatically reaching out, steadying myself against his shoulder. “I found you at the banquet. I kissed you later. I gave you a bottle of wine.”

“But I’m the one who should know better,” he says, and then his hand is on mine, holding it against his warm chest. My heart beats harder, faster.

“You think I don’t?”

“I shouldn’t be giving you rides and walking you home,” he goes on. “Pretending that those things are perfectly fine and innocent, because they’re not.”

We shift in the tiny space and suddenly our bodies are touching from shoulder to hip, the jolt of his heat like an electric current.

“We shouldn’t be seeing each other at all,” I tell him, even as I close my eyes, press myself into him so softly I can tell myself I’m not doing anything, my lips millimeters from his ear.

“No,” he says. “The more I see you the harder it is to pretend I don’t like you.”

A hand on my hip, his fingers touching bare skin above my too-small shorts.

“And the harder it is to pretend I don’t want you,” he whispers.

My heart’s beating so hard and fast that it feels like my ribcage is rattling in my body. Outside and from above, the organ hums thickly, surrounding us.

“What if it were my fault?” I ask.

“What do you mean?”

I know I should walk away. I know that. I know my coworker Nathaniel got expelled for sexual misconduct and while I have no intention of making porn, I’m fairly certain that sleeping with my professor also falls into that category.

I know he could get fired and his career could be over.

I know a million things wrong with this scenario, and not one of them stops me.

“I mean,” I say, and plant a kiss on his neck, right below his jaw. His fingers curl into my spine.

“What if —” another kiss, higher up, “— it were my fault?”

The last kiss lands on his jawline, right below his ear, my fingers now woven through his hair, his slight stubble sharp on my lips.

He moves his hand until his palm is flat on my back, in the space between the shorts and my vest, underneath the jacket I’m still wearing. He swallows hard, his breath on my neck.

Then his hand is on my face, his thumb stroking my jaw, and he pulls me back, his green eyes nearly black in the dark, his lips parted, his gaze roaming my face. I don’t breathe. I don’t think my heart beats.

And he kisses me.

The One That Got Away, a second chance standalone contemporary romance by New York Times bestselling author Karina Halle is coming April 2, 2020!

Copy of TheOneThatGotAway-PRINT-FOR-WEB.jpg

Ruby Turner was never meant to be mine.

When I first met her, she was a fresh, young, American sports journalist trying to find her footing in a new life abroad. She was the one interviewing me for an article, yet I wanted to know more about her. She captivated me.

But she went home with Marco that night.

My agent.

My brother.

And I did what I could to pretend I was fine with it.

After all, I’m Luciano Ribeiro. As the captain of Real Madrid, and Portugal’s National Team, it’s my job to be cool, calm, and collected, not easily rattled.

Only what I felt for Ruby over time, shook me to my very core.

It made me do things I never imagined I would do.

It started with a stolen kiss in the middle of the night.

It led to a passionate tryst.

It created a burden of guilt that I had to carry, as Ruby came in and out of my life until she left for good, leaving her mark on me.

Now, seven years later, she’s back.

She was the one that got away.

I don’t think I’ll let her go this time.

But I might not have a choice.

Because my heart still belongs to her.

And her heart might belong to my brother.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 1/2 ⭐️ Review: CD Reiss’s Crowne of Lies ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

“Happiness didn’t come neatly packaged. It found you in the moments between tears and laughter, in the fights and brokenness, in the support and in the bond with someone who loved you as broken as you were and as whole as you’d become.”

Okay, okay, okay. Buckle your seatbelts because I have so many ideas and thoughts about CD Reiss’s Crowne of Lies, and my brain has struggled to contain them. Some of them may feel out there, and some of them may seem obvious. No matter the case, just know one thing: I think CD Reiss is f[ing] brilliant as a writer. Her books, in this case, Crowne of Lies, give me life. Her books hit against my “lit” brain and light it up. I can’t say that about most romances.

In its most basic form, Crowne of Lies is my favorite type of story. Logan is a self-absorbed, workaholic who is privileged, short-sighted, and inflexible. He is your proto-typical alpha-hole. The best romantic stories for this type of character add in an intelligent, artistic, “messy” heroine to foil him. And this is the case in Reiss’s newest story. Logan and Ella are opposites of the extreme variety. As such, there is an expectation of “fireworks,” and Reiss does not disappoint in crafting those sparks. When Logan and Ella come together in the story, you can’t help but feel the chemistry bleed off the page. Yet, in the midst of their differences, we find that these two are actually more alike than they believe. Logan and Ella feel like two sides of the same coin. Both want a piece of the family name, yet it feels like a need borne more out of obligation than a real love for it. It’s here where Reiss suggests that there is more to Ella and Logan. Ella muddying Logan, and Logan offering his authority to Ella allows for these two to grow. Both of them are stagnant at the beginning of the story, fixed in place; with their marriage of convenience, they help the other find another piece of themselves. It’s a suggestion that the best of love completes us, challenges us, and brings out our strengths. Reiss’s strength is the craftsmanship of this coupling.

Where Reiss shines, though, is her writing. I’m not going to tell you a lie here or downplay my knowledge of writing for this review. Reiss uses an extended metaphor with fashion to illustrate the gravity of the relationships and their mythology in the backgrounds of certain characters. Ella’s family fashion line, Papillion, the one her father designed and her mother ran, is more than just its fashion. Reiss uses it to illustrate their love story. The fashion is the representation of their relationship, one that seemed fated and on the level of soulmates. When Bianca, Ella’s stepmother (interesting allusion to the Cinderella story, by the way…more of Reiss’s intelligence as a writer), cheapens the line, she bastardizes it and by extension, diminishes the love of Ella’s parents. This is the reason that Ella fights for the company. It isn’t protecting the fashion of the label; it’s about controlling and protecting the narrative of her parents’ love, represented in the fashion of Papillion. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, we recognize that the idyllic nature of their love is manufactured. The metaphor becomes extended through Ella’s obfuscation of her father’s dress. At this moment, Ella is “breaking $hit” and rewriting her own story with Logan. When you read these moments in Crowne of Lies, it becomes clear that Reiss is more artist than writer. It is here where she draws out the goosebumps on your arm because she isn’t just telling you Logan and Ella’s story; she’s showing you through the images of her story. This is where the genius of writing finds its profundity. The image of fashion in this book is used to illustrate the rewriting of Ella and Logan’s love. Like the manufactured narrative of her parents’ love, Ella and Logan believe they are impossible for each other in the “forever” sense of it. They are too different. In re-fashioning her father’s dress, along with re-imagining Doreen’s dress, Reiss is showing us that Ella and Logan can “break” the ideas of their relationship and make it their own. It was here that I bowed down to CD Reiss’s ingenuity and artistry as a writer.

Even more, her prose (yes, she is the Shakespeare of smut) grabs you. It challenges you. It connects you deeply to the emotional strife of her characters, and darn it, it entertains. Logan and Ella’s wordplay will titillate you. Even more, Logan is such a dirty talker that their physicality will turn you on and make you blush a little. He’s so dirty. Yet, it’s Reiss’s words that add the jewels to the Crowne story. Her words here reveal her talent as a wordsmith: “I was an alchemist who turned hurt tangible.”…”Fine, Daddy. An alchemist who turned pain into art.” Reiss’s words give us pictures that emulate the feelings and thoughts of her characters. This causes them to ingratiate their way into our souls. I gobbled them up and felt satiated by the end of Crowne of Lies

In the midst of her writing and story, CD Reiss challenges us. Yes, Crowne of Lies is an entertaining, intelligent, and insightful tale of two people seemingly different coming together to protect what they believe is due them. But it’s really something more. Crowne of Lies is a story of being. Who are we when our manufactured narratives are proved false? Who are we when our truth is upended? Who are we when we realize there is more to our story that we had believed previously? There is an existential crisis in this book, and it’s a challenge for readers to consider their own story, their own mythology. It is possible to be more than we previously thought. Logan and Ella’s story is more than a marriage of convenience story; their romance is an admonishment to examine your truth and live in it…until you find new truths about yourself. If you haven’t read  CD Reiss’s books, then you haven’t allowed yourself the true pleasure of romancelandia. Crowne of Lies is a great place to start. I adored the first book in the Crowne series of standalones, Iron Crowne, but Logan and Ella captured first place in this series.

“My past was my own. My skills had value. I was enough. Good enough. Talented enough. Free enough.”

In love and romance,

Things are about to get sticky…

Beefcakes, an all-new hilarious, second-chance standalone romance from Katana Collins, is coming March 24th and we have the FIRST sneak peek!

9.11_Beefcakes

I might as well permanently add the label “Ex” to my name. I’m an Ex-Mr. Universe. Ex-Mr. Olympus. An Ex-Hollywood Stuntman. But no one from my small hometown cares anything about that. They only care that I’m the ex-boyfriend to the beloved Mayor’s daughter, Elaina Dyker.

And now, ten years later, I’m back, helping my siblings run my mother’s bakery while she takes on chemo. What should have been a routine cupcake delivery turns into utter chaos when the bachelorette party thinks I’m a stripper. And what’s worse? Elaina is the maid of honor.

But the meme about us sure went viral fast. My small hometown has become positively infested with tipsy bridesmaids looking for my erotic cupcakes.

Now Hollywood’s knocking again—and this time they want me and my ex, Mr. Beefcake and Ms. Prude, to star in a reality show.

It could solve all my problems—except her.

Excerpt

I arched my brow at her. “I bragged about knowing you so well…but man. I did not see this almond croissant massacre coming. What do you have against almonds? Or was it the amount of butter that offended you? Because as a fitness expert, let me tell you butter isn’t the enemy. Sugar is the enemy.”

She laughed. “I, uh…I might have some anger management issues.”

I took the bag from her and peeked in. There were knuckle marks against the outside of the croissant. Literal knuckle marks. I barked a laugh. “Elaina Dyker. Did you punch the croissant?”

She laughed, pressing her lips together as though this would hide the fact that I saw her adorable little giggle. She brought her thumb and forefinger up beside her temple. “Maybe a little.”“Did you even try a bite?”

She shook her head no. “I like my routine. I like my daily lunch of yogurt and almonds.”

I made a face. Because she had to be exaggerating. Sure…she liked them. But having that same thing every day? Even chocolate cake every day would get tedious. “You can like yogurt and almonds but still indulge every now and then, you know.” I reached in and pinched off a piece of the smashed croissant, holding it out toward her lips. “C’mon. Live a little. I promise you, it is actually healthy, if that’s your concern.” Not that she needed to be concerned about that. “Almond flour. Gluten free. Grain free. Only two net carbs. The only sugar is the honey in the honey roasted almonds and the natural sugar in dates.” Her eyes grew wide at that and I knew I had hooked her.

She reached out her hand to take the piece of croissant from me, but I pulled back. “Nuh-uh,” I teased. “We can’t have your fingers getting sticky. Might ruin that fancy suit you’re wearing.”

She rolled her eyes, but parted her wet lips, her tongue peeking out just enough for me to place the croissant on top of. She moaned as soon as it hit her mouth, and her eyes fell closed as she slowly chewed and swallowed. “That’s…that’s healthy?”

I nodded. “See? I’m not just a pile of muscles. I’ve got some talent, too.”

Her head fell to the side. “I never said you weren’t talented. I just wish you wouldn’t show off quite so much of your other assets.”

I grinned. “I thought you liked my assets?”

“I do,” she answered absentmindedly, then immediately shook her head, realizing what she’d said. “I mean, I did.”

KC - PhotoAbout Katana

As an author and a story-teller, it is the lifeblood to which my ideas take flight. And I believe in giving credit where credit is due. Occasionally someone (ie – my husband) will try to secretly switch out my beloved regular coffee for decaf. I always know the difference. ALWAYS (I’m looking at you, SEAN).

I am incapable of achieving the perfect ponytail. I’m dyslexic. I can never wear white without spilling on myself. And I’ve never read Pride and Prejudice (gasp!).

When I was younger and stole my mother’s Harlequins to read beneath the covers with a flashlight (seriously, did we ALL do this? I think we did.), I wanted to read about the tough as nails heroine. The perfectly imperfect girl with quirks and attitude and sass. And the anti-heroes who were anything but “Prince Charming.” Forget the knight on a white horse… give me the bad boy on a motorcycle.

So, now, I write those romance novels I craved to see on the shelves all those years ago—the sassy heroines. The badass heroes. I spend my days in the throes of my imagination, and am loving every minute of it. I can travel anywhere and become anyone I want to be. One day, I’m a mechanic in Boston and the next, I’m a vampire stripping in Las Vegas.

Since penning my first novel back in 2012, I’m now an international author with 15 published books, in a wide range of contemporary romance genres–(Paranormal, New Adult, Small town, Erotic Suspense… you name it!).

After living for a decade in Brooklyn, NY, I took the plunge and moved to beautiful (although kinda chilly) Portland, Maine. I now live full time in ‘Vacationland’ with a kind of mean cat, a mellow chihuahua, and a very NOT mellow lab-pittie mix. Oh, yeah… there’s a husband who draws comics somewhere in that mix, too. I can usually be found in a coffee shop with my nose in my laptop wearing fabulous (albeit sometimes impractical) shoes.

I love connecting with readers and fellow sassy storytellers, so feel free to drop me an email at katana.collins@gmail.com or connect with me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (@katanacollins). You can find a list of my available books over on my Bookshelf or if you’ve already read a book, it would make my day if you wrote a review!

Threats, complaints, and criticisms should go to comments@fbi.gov.
