SADIE

Okay, reposition feet hip-distance apart and centered on the mat. Inhale and let it all go on the exhale. I look over the balcony across the barren city and try to find perspective. What did the teacher say? Set your intention? My intention is to maintain a modicum of good health and to not go insane during self-isolation. Fingers crossed on both fronts. Getting some work done wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

“They locked down the fucking city, man!” The voice blocks me from finding my zen spot. Some big blond dude is pacing back and forth in the neighboring apartment. Guess we’ve all got to get our exercise one way or another. A nice quiet doctor owns the place, but he’s overseas right now. No idea who this guy is. The new cat sitter, maybe? If so, I hope Gloria housetrains him quickly because all of this shouty behavior is not okay. Not if I have to share a wall with him for the next few weeks.

My new neighbor’s voice lowers to a more tolerable level and I take a deep, calming breath before moving into my next pose. Much better. Despite having questionable balance and being new to this whole yoga thing, I’m not doing too badly. It’s weird how quiet the city is with everything on lockdown. Peaceful, almost.

“Two weeks! I’ll be stuck here for two weeks!” he rants once more.

Ugh.

Due to the architect’s penchant for floor to ceiling windows—perfect for letting in the light—I have quite the view of my new neighbor’s performance. Much angst. Such woe. Like we’re not all going to go stir crazy during lock in. Even if it has only just started. I for one can’t wait to see how many divorces and break-ups this causes. Call it morbid curiosity. Though, being a romance writer, my mind would be better served dwelling on the possibilities for true love in this situation.

A random casual hook-up turning into so much more due to weeks of forced interaction? Roommates bonding over newly revealed shared interests? Nuh. Roommates entering into a sex pact to stave off boredom! Now that could work. Broken beds and broken hearts. That’s how to get things done. With the requisite happy ever after at the end, of course.

“Excuse me!” he shouts, shoving a frustrated hand through his head of thick, wavy, dark blond hair. New phone call, I think. After all, you can’t yell at the same person all day long. How tedious would that be?

Call me distractible, but watching him is actually a hell of a lot more interesting than perfecting my Downward Dog or doing yet another inventory of my pantry. Damn Oreos. I could have sworn I had another package. Day one and I’m already out of my favorite snack. Just bring on the apocalypse already. Without Oreos my life is already functionally over.

“Are you kidding me!” The man sure has a set of lungs on him. Unfortunately, at this point, he about-faces and strides back into the apartment. Still yelling, of course, though I can’t quite make out what he’s saying.

On the plus side, in those blue jeans, his ass is a thing of wonder. Honest to God. In less pandemic-y times, I’d charge my friends a bottle of wine to come over and witness the beauty of that thing. So tight. So nice. I lick my lips. Impressively broad shoulders beneath his T-shirt too. When he paces back to the front of the apartment, I’m presented with a strong jawline, high forehead, and a nose that could be slightly crooked. At least, it will be in the book. Readers dig that shit. The hint of a complicated past with a dash of violence thrown in for good measure. Ideally, he’d have broken it defending a small child or rescuing puppies. A combination of the two, perhaps?

Yes, it’s a definite. Apart from the anger management issues, this guy is officially hot stuff. Not that I’m after an actual love interest. Just inspiration for the hero of my next book.

Which is when it hits me…big buff dude reveals surprisingly sensitive side to sexy single introverted neighbor during quarantine. Hmm. It has possibilities. I stop procrastinating and move onto the next pose, arms out in a T, legs wide, and a slow bend at the waist. I exhale, pondering the plot idea along with the thickness of his thighs. The way the denim lovingly embraces every inch of his musculature. It’s like it’s on a loop playing over and over in my head. Okay, maybe I’m a little sex starved. He can feature in my masturbatory fantasies as well. After all, he’s that kind of can-do, helpful guy. Or at least, he is in my mind. And that’s where the man will stay. At a safe and appropriate distance. For both the virus and my heart.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As I fell into Catherine Cowles’s forthcoming book, Reckless Memories, the idea of love wound its way through my mind. In reading romance, we oftentimes only think of the definition of love equated with romantic relationships. However, when you look at the word love, there are multiple ideas behind it. Depending on the book you’ve read, the Greeks believed in 6 – 8 forms of love, the most common of them being eros (romantic), philia (brotherly love), and agape (unconditional love). While I was reading Reckless Memories, I found these three “loves” illustrated beautifully through Ford and Bell’s journey. This carefully-turned story encapsulates the power of these types of love towards meting out forgiveness, compassion, and enduring love. 

Reckless Memories tells the story of Ford Hardy’s and Isabelle “Bell” Kipton’s journey through pain and trauma to forgiveness and love. Yes, the blurb for Reckless Memories offers a small sense of this book, but it doesn’t really show its depths. There is more to this story than its blurb allows, so I recommend reading this poignant story to discover its power. 

For me, Cowles’s ability to render a story that grabs you from the first page and pulls you through the end is impressive. I picked it up yesterday, thinking it would take me a couple of days to read it. However, as has happened with her past books, I simply couldn’t put this story down. Ford and Bell’s story is powerful. It articulates beautifully the difficulty of the mind to move beyond trauma. Cowles shows us the mental fiction we create after a difficulty that prevents our healing. As Ford and Bell encounter each other after a decade apart, they are forced to face the truths of their past. In doing so, they realize that their thoughts were lies. It’s here where I found myself in Cowles’s book. Like Ford and Bell, I create stories around moments that simply don’t exist. Instead of asking for clarity or facing the truth of a situation, my mind overrides all sense. Cowles aptly crafts this in her hero, Ford. We learn quickly in this story that when we face the truth and accept forgiveness we can move forward. Until we make that choice, however, we stagnate at some point. Ford’s travails and acceptance of his love for Bell is the power in this story. For me, he undergoes the biggest transformation, and Cowles writes him well.

In comparison, Bell is the best kind of heroine. Unlike Ford, Bell is hit from a variety of sides when tragedy strikes her and Ford’s life. Ford runs away as his defense mechanism, while Bell is forced to face the consequences. It is here in the story where Cowles shows us the power of philia or brotherly love. Yes, this story is a romance between a hero and heroine. Yet, it is also a love story between friends. Cowles asserts, through her powerful storytelling, that our friends can evolve into a family. When our family from birth is unable to love us as we are, we can create a family of friends who loves, sees, and accepts us, no matter the case. This is one of the most profound ideas of Reckless Memories. With her friends by her side, Bell is able to reinvent herself post-tragedy, and her life is complete until Ford returns. She doesn’t need Ford to complete her, necessarily; instead, he simply adds a layer to her life that makes it more complete. As Cowles acquaints us with Bell, it is clear that her strength lies in her self-knowledge and the love of her friends. It is her fortitude and integrity that make Bell the most heroic, I think. 

As Ford and Bell acknowledge their feelings for each other, Cowles articulates the power of eros. From the “Prologue”, it is clear that these two are fated even though complications exist. Cowles has a challenge (I won’t divulge it here) in this story that a writer without the ability to plot a story could find themselves in trouble. However, Cowles meticulously guides us through the potential landmines of her story. In doing so, the reader easily accepts Ford and Bell’s love for each other. Without her careful craftmanship, this could have destroyed the story; instead, their love affair underscores the book’s message. 

Lastly, as she does so appealingly, Cowles whispers her prose over the pages of Reckless Memories in a poignant mix of tragedy, suspense, and romance. All of these conspire to build a story that keeps her readers engaged. When you turn to the last page of her book, you want more. More Ford. More Bell. More Anchor. Thankfully, there are more books coming in this series because you simply want more of this story. 

Reckless Memories is set on an island, and the ocean that surrounds it represents possibilities. When Ford or Bell need respite, they turn to the beach to find it. Much like Ford and Bell, this book is also a perfect place to journey for respite. While its suspense will keep you turning the page, Catherine Cowles’s careful storytelling will help you escape into a world where anything is possible if you simply embrace love and family and friendship.

When I looked down, her hands were fisted on the countertop, shaking from the effort of keeping them still.

“I’d take a picture of that,” I told her, voice low and charged.

She tilted her chin up toward me. “Of what?”

In the low light of the apartment, her eyes glowed like melted gold.

“Your hands.” I licked my suddenly dry lips. “I feel like they’re telling me something that I can’t figure out.”

Grace peered down at the fists she was making, and her fingers relaxed, the skin no longer white around her knuckles.

“What are they telling me, Grace?” I begged.

She ducked under my arm and I exhaled heavily. Without the heat from her body against mine, I took a second to get myself under control. When I turned, she was handing me her camera.

“Go ahead,” she said.

I tilted my head. “You want me to take your picture?”

Grace studied the camera, carefully removing the lens cap and pulling it up to her eyes. She aimed it at my face, and I wondered what she saw. If I looked like I was one thread away from snapping, because that’s how I felt.

I’d never felt like I was one quick step away from freedom, but here, I was. One nudge over the edge of the cliff, and she’d have me free falling without a parachute. I’d never, ever wanted it so badly.

When I heard the click of the shutter, I rubbed the back of my neck. “Can I see?”

She ignored me, pulling the camera away so she could look at the digital image on the back. Her lips curved in a secret little smile.

“What do you see?” I asked.

Her chest expanded on an inhale. “Frustration.” Her eyes met mine. “Want.”

Words lodged in my chest, and I couldn’t tear them loose.

I held my hand out and she passed the camera to me. With a rough swallow, I squinted at the tiny viewfinder once it was at eye-level. Grace came into my eye line, holding my gaze with such directness that I fought the urge not to throw the camera across the room simply because it was between us.

It was her turn to ask. “What do you see?”

My finger pushed the slick button on top of the camera, and her mouth curled in surprise that I took a shot.

I pushed the button again as she took a step closer.

“You’re not answering me,” she said lightly.

“Because I can hardly think straight when you’re looking at me like that.” My admission was rough and hard, out before I could stop it.

She took another step, within reach now, and one of her hands slid up my forearm.

One more picture, the sound of the shutter snapping between us like a shot.

Somehow, I set it down on the counter without smashing it.

“You can’t lie to a camera,” Grace said quietly, watching her hand on my arm before the other landed on my heaving chest. “It captures things as are they are, good or bad or ugly or beautiful.”

I slid an arm around her waist and tightened my grip until she was flush against me. My other hand pushed up the back of her neck and into her hair.

“This is insane,” she breathed, dropping her forehead onto my chest.

“No, it’s not.”

Grace lifted her head and pinned me in place. “Tucker, seventy-two hours ago, I hated you. You can’t tell me this doesn’t feel a little nuts.”

I couldn’t stop my smile. “You didn’t hate me. Not really.”

One eyebrow lifted. “Wanna bet?”
