Release Date: May 12

I’ve loved him from afar.

Though most times he’s only a foot away.
I’m smart enough to know he’ll never be anyone’s forever.
He checks all the bad boy boxes.
Tattoos. Check.
Motorcycle. Check.
Chip on his shoulder. Check check.
If he wasn’t my neighbor and friend I may have thrown myself at him. Okay, yeah. I wouldn’t. Because guys like Dylan don’t want a woman who writes kid’s math textbooks under him in bed. Instead, I pathetically savor morsels of moments where I have his sole attention.
That was until his archenemy moved in with me. Now suddenly, Dylan’s moving in too and warning off the first guy in a long time who’s showing me interest. Could he finally see me as more than a friend, or am I just a prize to win and show off to his enemy?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Helena Hunting’s A Secret for A Secret, book 3 of the All In series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I’ll bring my chaos into your calm.”

I am fairly certain that most romance readers love the “opposites attract” trope. More than anything, this trope brings about the greatest insight into the human experience. It highlights our differences but reminds us that those differences are complements to each other. This idea runs thoughtfully through Helena Hunting’s newest book, A Secret for A Secret. If you’re like me, you ran for this book because (1) Ryan Kingston, the “perfect” friend to Shippy in Hunting’s second book of the All in Series, A Favor for a Favor was dreamy, but needed mussing and (2) Hunting was going to do what she does best: bring a heroine to mess Kingston up. And man, did Hunting deliver in this book.

What do we need to know? Ryan Kingston or King for short, is a good guy: ever-present, always thoughtful, straight-laced, a great friend, khaki and white polo shirt wearing, consummate milk drinker. There is nothing he does wrong because his life is controlled down to the food he consumes, his sleep schedule, and the cleanliness of his home.  He is the kind of guy you want to take home to your family.

Huntington’s heroine in this story, Queenie, is King’s opposite. She hasn’t figured out her life. The goals she previously set for herself are derailed through her choices. She’s an artistic type who is messy, colorful, and a bit of a loner. Queenie is struggling to find her path in life. As she investigates this, she moves home to live with her father and work as his personal assistant.

One night, Queenie and Kingston meet in a bar, and there is an instant attraction. Both of them commiserate over some life challenges. As one drink leads to another and another, these two end up together for the night. When Kingston wakes up the next morning, Queenie is gone, and he believes he won’t see her again. Until he does. On the first day of practice for the season. And she’s the general manager’s daughter. These two have a keen chemistry from the start, and Kingston, the everpresent good guy, wants to do everything right, but Queenie and her little bit of chaos try to derail it. Are Queenie and Kingston a match made in heaven? If you believe in the law of opposites attracting, then you know the answer.

First off, let me say that I adore Helena Hunting. I think I signed up for an ARC of A Favor for A Favor, and this began my Helena Hunting binge-read fest. When I first began reading romance, I read Hunting’s Pucked and fell in love with her storytelling, but I hadn’t read any of the other books in the series. After AFFAF, I jumped in fast. I quickly, using a combination of e-books and audiobooks, gobbled her Pucked and All In series. She does what others such as Penny Reid do: create these grand universes of characters who interact with each other in new books. That’s my crack in the romance world. Seriously. Nothing makes me happier than for older characters to show up in later books. Think Violet and Alex in A Secret for A Secret. It illustrates Hunting’s ability to know her readers and write romance that feeds their spirits. Secondly, it’s obvious she’s able to envision her fiction beyond one book. It shows a long-game plan, not a short-term enjoyment.

Secondly, Hunting makes me laugh. Out loud. There are so many moments (one especially) that tickles your funny bone in this new story. She finds the hilarity in simple life situations. Whether it’s an allergic reaction or a dad’s reaction to his daughter with a player, there is something funny in everything. Hunting’s genius as a storyteller, though, is her ability to balance her comedy with the gravity of life. Both Kingston and Queenie are dealing with various levels of expectation. Kingston’s family expects that he will make certain decisions, while Queenie’s struggle lies in her perceived expectations of her father and the verbal abuse of her mother. This dichotomy creates moments of despair for her, as she simply doesn’t feel “good enough” under the weight of those expectations. The depth of this reality conspires with the hilarity of Kingston and Queenie’s coupling to remind readers that life is full of ups and downs. How we handle those determine what we get out of life.

Add into A Secret for A Secret...well, secrets, and you have a story that is compelling and engaging. This ARC had been sitting on my Kindle waiting for me to finish ARCs that had an earlier release date. It taunted me because I knew Kingston’s story would be a good one, and Hunting did not disappoint. While the story is a seemingly simple one: straight-laced hockey player falls for the boss’s daughter, it really isn’t. There are heavy feelings of inadequacy due to parental verbal abuse and poor decision making. The constant in this story, the one thing that makes you turn the page until the book is finished, is the way that Kingston determinedly loves Queenie. Period. While there is seeming strife between these two, Hunting has crafted a hero in Kingston that propels you into their story because his love for Queenie is vast and beautiful. He loves every part of her, even though she is different from him. I loved Hunting’s articulation of it as their story grows, so much so that I binge-read the entire book in half a day. To read Kingston love Queenie as she needs to be loved is the glory of A Secret for A Secret

True to form, Helena Hunting has offered up another glorious hockey story. I can imagine as an author this might become boring. As a reader, though, reading Hunting’s hockey players feels right: every. single. time. She brilliantly exposes the truth of the human experience through the heroes who light up the ice and the heroines who warm their beds. At the very least, the fact that Queen and King are the heroes of A Secret for A Secret should make you run to download their story fast.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: L. B. Dunbar’s Love in Deed, the next SmartyPants Romance story ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If you read L.B. Dunbar’s book in the first SmartyPants Romance series, Love in Due Time, you were introduced to her hero and heroine for her second book, Love in Deed, through Naomi and Nathan’s story.  Most notably is Beverly Townsen, Naomi’s sister. From the outside, Beverly is a bitter, older woman. Her life isn’t easy. The few times that Naomi encounters her in Love in Due Time, your heart hurts for Naomi as it’s clear that she wants a better relationship with her prickly sister; however, said sister makes this difficult. In that book, it’s hard to empathize with Beverly because it’s easy to judge her seemingly self-righteous, cantankerous characterization.

Dunbar’s brilliance shines brightest, however, in her articulation of Beverly’s journey in the second book of the SmartyPants Romance series, Love in Deed. It is here where you recognize the depth of hurt that resides in Beverly. That her hurts run so deep, they seem unfathomable. In this book, I found a bit of myself in Beverly, and Dunbar’s exceptional storytelling hit against the bruises of my soul to vocalize that pain for her readers. This isn’t a new experience for me, but Beverly’s story felt like my own. If only I had a Jedd to ride in and help me heal that pain…

Jedd Flemming has returned to Green Valley after an extended absence. He is back for two reasons: to find out where his brother Boone has gone and to get back a little of what he lost when he left Green Valley. In order to complete the second goal, he decides to converge on the Townsen homestead to negotiate using the land to raise horses. Once there, he finds himself drawn to Beverly. Something about her calls to him. After some negotiating with Beverly’s daughter, Hannah, Jedd moves into the barn and prepares to fix up the land, and Beverly and Jedd dance around their chemistry…until they don’t. When their pasts threaten to derail their future, Jedd and Beverly must find a way to create a new place for themselves.

At the beginning of this review, you must know that Dunbar holds a special place on my list of favorite authors. This woman crafts characters who feel grounded in reality. One of the ways she does this is imagining characters over the age of 40. This is obviously niche to the romance community, and I love that I can find my age group represented in the community through Dunbar’s storytelling. They struggle with my struggles, yet they always find their happy ending. In Love in Deed, Beverly aka Bee struggles to know herself. She’s lived for two decades waiting for her husband to return even though he devastated her life. As such, she’s a woman who has stagnated out of fear: to move on, to let go, to be more. Since Dunbar conceives characters like this, I will always read her stories because they act as a reflection of my own experiences. Dunbar finds this space in romance so that everyone finds representation. Ageism is an issue in our community, and Dunbar’s romances work to undo that issue.

What I loved most about Love in Deed is Bee’s empowerment. It would be simple for me to say that Jedd saves a “broken” Bee. He doesn’t. Instead, Jedd inspires Bee to embrace her truth and to face her fears. I think we often find romance where the hero or heroine “saves” the other. In this story, though, Bee saves herself by simply facing her fears. Jedd’s love for Bee offers her a safe harbor to dock when she feels fearful. This is the beauty of their relationship. That harbor is grounded in truth and commitment, two qualities lacking in her marriage. Even though Jedd almost ruins this, his actions save him.

If the first message of Love in Deed is find and accept your truth, the second message is words are slippery and can destroy. Instead, actions speak louder than those words when they hurt us. That truth spoke the deepest to me. Dunbar offers a beautiful message at the outset of this story about the power of words to build and destroy. There is so much truth in that reality and Bee’s life deliberately illustrates this.  When her mind chants “left behind” over and over again, you feel the depth of her pain and rejection. When she begins to find her inner strength again, she chants “straight-ahead” and the promise of her happy ending is there because she’s choosing it for herself. Bee’s evolution and journey to finding her self again is the emotional power of Love in Deed

Along with Jedd and Bee are additional messages about family. When Beverly’s sisters stand with her, she’s empowered. As she looks at her daughter’s life, she recognizes her negative impact on it and seeks to right that wrong. While Jedd is the impetus for Bee’s self-empowerment, she finds her strength in her family’s protection. It’s Dunbar’s gentle reminder that we don’t have to be alone to face our fears.

Lastly, as a writer, Dunbar articulates her messages brilliantly through a variety of ways in this story. The allusion to other literary stories, namely Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew, is profound. It grounds Love in Deed in the literary tradition. Additionally, the images of the barn and Bee’s land stand as metaphors for Bee’s past. Dunbar uses those images to underscore Bev’s complacency and need for change. Even Jedd’s horses become representations of Beverly’s persona. Just as he does for Beverly, Jedd sees the strengths of horses who have been turned aside for their foibles. Dunbar’s use of these literary techniques adds power to her story, illustrating her expertise in telling compelling stories.

I loved every moment of L.B. Dunbar’s Love in Deed. Had you told me how deeply I would care for Beverly before reading this book, I would have laughed at you. I unduly judged her in Naomi’s story because I didn’t understand her hurts. And I think that’s a lesson in itself. We all carry something with us, cracks and bruises from past hurts that inform the way we approach others. I guess Dunbar’s overall message is a need for us to avoid judging others before we understand their truth. Love in Deed is another important book for the SmartyPants Romance world.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Carly Phillips’s Dare to Resist, Book 1 of Dare Nation ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Disclaimer: I think it’s best to lay my cards on the table before I begin my review. Prior to Dare to Resist, I had not read Carly Phillips’s series of books that lead into this newest series. Why did I sign up for an ARC of it when I am fairly new to Carly Phillips? Easy. The blurb grabbed me instantly. Three reasons: secret baby, sports, and office romance. All of these are romance triggers for me. They oftentimes create some of the sweatiest, hottest, dreamiest romances. And Dare to Resist did not disappoint.

First of all, kudos to Carly Phillips for considering readers such as myself. If I had read the other Dare series, I would obviously have a greater context for the characters of this newest story. However, Phillips considers new readers, and she provides background, enough to help the reader understand the current story. She offers a nice balance of explanation along with the plot points of her current story. This suggests Phillips’s ability to engage any reader into her storytelling, seasoned or new. I appreciated that balance, as I’ve read other authors new to me who have made assumptions about my knowledge, especially with a book that they espoused as a “standalone.” When authors are careful to consider a greater audience in their storytelling, they earn instant points. Even if you are a seasoned Carly Phillips reader, the details act as quick reminders, not weighing the story down with inessential details.

Now, what is there to love about this new book? Obviously, the characters are a highlight, namely the hero and heroine: Austin and Quinnlyn “Quinn.” At first glance, Austin as the arrogant playboy former NFL football player/player agent who clearly loves the ladies and his job is a great set-up for the type of heroine who will challenge him and bring him to his knees. Thankfully, Phillips crafts Quinn who is beautiful, intelligent, and insightful. She is the perfect match to Austin’s alpha-male persona, and Phillips makes their chemistry palpable. If I had to criticize anything about their constructions, it would be Austin’s objectification of Quinn from the outset. While he doesn’t verbally articulate his interest in her, his mental insight lends itself to heroic douchery. For me, it was a bit of a struggle at first to “like” Austin and even his brothers, as they are more apt to see women as only their outer expression. These guys are “bros” to their core. As the story progresses and Austin begins to acknowledge Quinn’s apparent intelligence, skill, and work ethic, then you begin to like him more. However, it took me a bit to get on board the “Austin Prescott” train. One of my biggest annoyances was his willingness to “lose himself” in someone else to help him “get past” his attraction to Quinn. <insert eyeroll here> Thankfully, Phillips knows her readers well, and she saves Austin from himself.

Additionally, while I respected Quinn’s struggle with considering a future of children, her initial lack of reflection on this topic was frustrating. It read like a reach for Phillips to make this Quinn’s struggle. Instead, the tensions between Austin and Quinn could have rested strictly in the challenges of an office romance. I think they consummated their chemistry too quickly for this story, and Phillips could have built it long into Quinn’s help with his secret baby. Again, these are minor in comparison to the veritable benefits of this story.

The secret baby storyline is the gold of Dare to Resist. Whenever the most playboyish of heroes finds themselves surprised by an unassuming baby, the story sparks, and this is definitely the case with this book. It’s in that storyline where Phillips humanizes Austin. She turns him from a bit of a neanderthal of a hero to a gold-medal father. His transformation and fall into love with Quinn is the second best part of this book. It’s where all the good feelings exist, and Phillips deftly crafts a happily-ever-after for Quinn and Austin that both entertains and challenges her readers. In Austin’s acceptance of his child, Carly Phillips’s message of the power of family is realized. There are many more moments like that in Dare to Resist, but ultimately Austin’s heroic evolution reminds us that family is the foundation of love. When Quinn’s love finally enters his life, it can easily grow on that base.

As I finished Dare to Resist, I knew that I wanted to read more from Carly Phillips. Thankfully, there is more to come with Dare Nation, and this reader can’t wait.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Erin Nicholas’s Forking Around, the second Hot Cakes book ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I am new to the Erin Nicholas world. Prior to reading Forking Around, I had only read the first book of the Hot Cakes series, Sugarcoated, and she hooked me into this new series of 5 entrepreneurial male friends who have bought a sweets factory. I think it would easy to say that this series, and by extension Forking Around, is a fluffy treat. There is a lightness to these stories because they are contemporary romantic comedies meant to entertain you with a story of delectable romantic delights. However, it is too simple to say that Nicholas’s Hot Cakes books are easy, sugary goodness because they aren’t. Underpinning their casual stories runs a thread of depth that anchors her stories. In Forking Around, hidden in the rich guy-poor girl story, lies a greater message about personal sacrifice and the common good.

This second story of the Hot Cakes series follows Dax, the fun-loving Fluke co-owner. People can count on Dax to bring fun to any situation. He lives to lighten people’s days. It would be easy to say that Dax doesn’t worry about life, but underlying this mischievous and charitable person is a man who tries to seek the approval of his father. He has a tendency to listen to the needs of others and find solutions, but his solutions have unintended consequences with his inability to fully realize his solutions. His prowess lies in the ability to initiate change, but he struggles with seeing those changes into the long term.

Enter Jane, the heroine of this story. Jane is the heavy to Dax’s light. Her life has been ordained to care for her ailing father, intermediate for her half-sister and step-mother, and help those closest to her, sometimes at the expense of her own happiness and well-being. At the re-launch party for Hot Cakes, Jane catches the eye of Dax, and he finds himself enamored with her quickly. He uses his usual tricks to capture her, but Jane is grounded in a difficult life. This leads Dax to want to make her life easier, but, in doing so, he finds himself embroiled in a situation that feels beyond his capacity. Will Dax and Jane find a future together, or is Dax too much fun while Jane’s life is too much reality?

At its essence, Forking Around is an “opposites attract” tale.  At first glance, Dax and Jane would be the two least likely to connect, except that each does for the other what the other can’t do. Jane struggles to find peace in her life as she is constantly “putting out fires” in the lives of her loved ones. She needs more carefree fun, and she needs someone who can walk by her side providing that levity. Nicholas constructs Dax to be her soul mate. It’s clear from the start that their teasing is the medicine that Jane needs in her life. Conversely, Dax needs someone like Jane to ground him, to give him purpose. As the perpetual dreamer, his follow-through with ideas is realized through his three of his partners in Fluke: Grant, Aidan, and Cam. Yet, in his personal life, Jane offers him a solidity that he doesn’t understand. Nicholas’s ability to craft their chemistry so that it screams off the page, in my opinion, is the strength of this story. Unlike Aidan and Zoe in Sugarcoated, these two compelled me into their story. I didn’t want Dax to “fix” Jane’s situation. Instead, I needed him to be her safe landing, and Nicholas aptly captures this in her storytelling. She gives Jane a resiliency that is admirable, and her resiliency becomes the foundation for Dax’s growth

If I struggled with anything, it’s Dax’s believability for change. This is a character who has lived as a carefree playboy. It was understandable that Jane would be contrary to his previous conquests, but he so readily falls for Jane. I think it would have been more believable had he struggled with his attraction to her more. Instead, like Aidan in the first book, he falls deeply in love with Jane quickly. I would have appreciated the depth of their couplehood if Dax had offered more conflicted internal dialogue. However, his struggle with other characters’ perceptions of his inconstancy were the moments when my heart hurt the most in this story. Nicholas carefully exposes Dax’s insecurities, and those moments bring a depth to Dax’s character, making him the “perfect” man for Jane.

If you love sugary sweet romances with some spice on top, then Forking Around is definitely your cookie. This book is currently my favorite of the series, but there are a few more to go, and I am eagerly ready to gorge on this dessert of hot men who find intelligent women to ground their lives.

In love and romance,

From New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting comes a new romance about trading secrets, breaking the rules, and playing for keeps.

My name is Ryan Kingston, and I’m a rule follower. I’ve never been in a fistfight. I always obey the speed limit. I don’t get drunk, and I definitely don’t pick up random women at bars.

Except the night I found out that my whole existence has been a lie.

I got drunk. And picked up a stranger.

Her name was Queenie, and she was everything I’m not: reckless, impulsive, and chaotic. We did shots and traded secrets. And ended up naked at my place.

She left me a thank-you note in the morning and her panties as a parting gift. But no way to contact her.

Six weeks later I’m sitting in the first official team meeting of the season, and there she is. I neglected to mention that I’m the goalie for Seattle’s NHL team.

And Queenie? Turns out she’s the general manager’s daughter.

Everyone thinks Dax Marshall is a prince of a guy. And he’s definitely charming.

No matter how tempting and gorgeous the mess may be. Or how messy he wants to get with her.

Dax has spent his life being very serious about only one thing: proving you can be successful while still having a helluva good time. But he’s just met the one woman who might break his I-can-charm-anyone streak. She’s actually taking him seriously…and she seriously thinks they have nothing in common and can’t be together.

Maybe he’s the one who needs a new view of happily ever after. It’s time to stop forking around.

About Erin Nicholas

ErinNicholas

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Erin Nicholas has been writing romances almost as long as she’s been reading them. To date, she’s written over thirty sexy, contemporary novels that have been described as “toe-curling,” “enchanting,” “steamy,” and “fun.” She adores reluctant heroes, imperfect heroines, and happily ever afters.

Erin lives in the Midwest, where she enjoys spending time with her husband (who only wants to read the sex scenes in her books), her kids (who will never read the sex scenes in her books), and her family and friends (who claim to be “shocked” by the sex scenes in her books).
