There was something about that first score, and not just on the football field.

The First Score FOR WEB

I loved all of life’s firsts, which was why I’d been saving mine for one girl, my older sister’s best friend—Hazel Jones.

She was tough and sarcastic with walls around her heart as tall as a football stadium, but I knew she was the one for me.

Desperate times called for desperate measures and I’d have done anything to make her mine.

Like create a fake online persona.

Lie about my age.

Pretend I wasn’t some naive virgin.

And catfish the hell out of the love of my life.

“Thanks so much for taking her home, Hazel.” Ollie nudged me to get my attention and I turned to look at him, not having much choice in the matter now. I couldn’t be rude. It was a mistake. The green of his eyes was deeper today, less brown. I knew it was the jersey. It was always that way. A bead of sweat slid down the side of his face and he ran a hand through his hair like he always did. I knew it was a habit of his, just like I knew so many other things about him.

“You owe me.” I tried lightening the mood like I had with Scarlett. I nudged his shoulder but only came into contact with a pad.

Dragging his bottom lip into his mouth, he raked his teeth over the fullness and his eyes heated. He leaned his face close to mine. “You name it and it’s yours, brat.”

My face flamed and my mouth watered. Lord, he was a terrible flirt and by terrible I meant amazing. I swallowed the saliva pooling in my mouth and stepped back.

“Cut it out, Olls. Quit giving her a hard time. She came all this way so your ass would have a way home tonight.” Scarlett attempted to save me.

He eyed me. “Oh, I haven’t even started giving her a hard time yet,” he said before walking backward down the stadium steps, hot eyes still on me. I was thanking whatever gods were listening that he was walking backward. Please, God. Spare me that ass. I couldn’t handle it after his damn lip trick.

“You’re shameless, Oliver Knox,” Scarlett called down to him.

She wasn’t wrong. Oliver flirted with all the women. I never could tell if he had a preference for a certain kind of girl. If it walked and had tits and a vagina, he flirted.

“Bye, ladies,” Oliver said loudly and jangled Scarlett’s keys over his head before doing the most awful thing in the world to me—he spun around and gave me his ass. And God, was it a marvelous ass. Immediately my eyes ate it up. Was there anything better than a hot ass in some football pants? It was round and firm and high and I bet I could have bounced fifty quarters off of it. But I didn’t have any change. Damn. That was just my luck.

I was being mesmerized by the twin all white globes when they stopped just barely and my eyes diverted up to see Oliver looking over his shoulder and smiling. Damn him. He gave me a slow wink before continuing down the steps at a trot.

The tease. The bastard. He knew how good-looking he was. It didn’t matter a bit that he was my best friend’s brother or that he was a year and a half younger than me. Oliver Winston Knox was fine on a regular day, but in a football uniform he was the stuff dreams were made of. My dreams to be exact.

✍🏻 Blog Tour & Excerpt Reveal: Daisy Prescott’s Stranger Ranger, the last book of Season 2 of SmartyPants Romance ✍🏻

DP-SR-FBbannerAN

Stranger Ranger, an all-new standalone contemporary romance from USA Today bestselling author Daisy Prescott, is now available in Kindle Unlimited!

Read my review HERE.

20200127 GVPR02 Prescott-FF

New park ranger Daphne Baum is a reformed good girl. Breaking free from her overbearing family as soon as she turned eighteen, she’s been on her own ever since. The life of a park ranger, moving from park to park, suits her just fine. Though still a rule follower, she’s okay with a little sin in her life.

Every generation of Hill men has its black sheep. The general consensus among the family is that Odin Hill is the lucky bastard this go around. At seventeen, he blew out of town like an angry tornado only to return fifteen years later withdrawn and secretive. Living like a recluse in the hollows in the Smoky Mountains, he’s happy to keep to himself and is content to let locals believe he’s the town weirdo. Odin prefers the company of his pet pig to the nosy citizens of Green Valley.

When Daphne discovers Odin might be committing nefarious deeds on park land, she vows to find out the truth behind the handsome, yet chaotic, loner. Will the stranger help the ranger discover the difference between being good and doing the right thing? Or will they find themselves on opposite sides of love?

‘Stranger Ranger’ is a full-length contemporary romance, can be read as a standalone, and is book #2 in the Park Ranger series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Excerpt

By early afternoon, the crowd at the farmers’ market fades, leaving only stragglers, bargainers, and tourists sampling the charms of small town life.

I’ve had enough people for the week I’m looking forward to the quiet of my own company. All the talking and friendly chatter exhaust me. You’d think vegetables would sell themselves given they’re pretty self-explanatory. Yet folks wanna hear a story about a carrot being grown from the guy who pulled it out of the dirt himself. So I play my part of the happy farmer at the stand. It’s my bad luck I’ve always been charming. Part of my DNA.

My family has lived in the mountains surrounding Green Valley longer than anyone around here can remember. Before there was a National Park or even a Cades Cove, the Hills had established a homestead in the Smokies straddling Tennessee and North Carolina.

Because our last name is Hill, some people like to joke we put the hill in hillbilly. Jethro Winston for example. He’s hysterical. Some people think they have a sense of humor when they’re just being mean-spirited. As my Nannie Ida always says, glass houses provide good views, but then again, so do mirrors.

This is why I prefer the company of Patsy over most folks. She’s smart, a good listener, tidy, and doesn’t give a damn about my family and reputation. She has more class than a lot of the gossips and Sunday church-goers around here.

After I consolidate the remaining produce into crates and load up the van, I fold the tables and collapse my tent. While I work, the face of the brunette ranger floats through my mind.

She looked familiar but I didn’t recognize her name. It isn’t likely our paths have crossed. I don’t get out much and I’m not hanging around the bars or the visitor center in Cades Cove. Normally, one of my cousins covers the stand at the weekly farmers’ market and I can avoid the crowds. This is what happens when I let my guard down and am forced to engage with the public. I get iceberg and Bible quotes. I’ve never been a fan of either.

Bothered I’m still thinking about her, I close and lock up the van.

“Come on Patsy, let’s go for a walk.”

She gives a happy snort and steps closer to where her leash hangs on the top rail of her pen.

When the two of us stroll through town, folks stare. It’s worse when they insist on sharing a comment, tell the same old joke, and, in general, make a fuss. Honestly, I assume at this point people seeing the two of us together would be old news around here.

Guess some folks don’t have enough going on in their lives that they need to make commentary about people minding their own damn business.

I don’t understand what the big deal is about a man walking his pig.

Patsy’s excellent on a leash. Doesn’t pull. Has never instigated fights with dogs. Hasn’t bit anyone. Doesn’t do her business in the middle of the sidewalk. In my mind, she’s much better mannered than any old hound dog.

She’s pretty darn perfect in every conceivable way.

Except the one time she trampled Mrs. MacClure’s flower bed. Even that was my fault for not paying closer attention to where we were walking.

If I had to find fault with her, Patsy thinks she’s in charge. And she’s a little more than spoiled. I only have myself to blame.

“Clarice, please tell me you see that man walking his pig.” A woman shouts to her friend and points from about three feet away.

“I’m not invisible,” I tell her with a flat smile.

“Oh dear.” Her companion rolls her eyes. “You’re a tall drink of cool water, aren’t you?”

The question is rhetorical. Being compared to a refreshing beverage doesn’t require a response, so I remain quiet. Patsy tugs on her leash and releases a frustrated snort that we’ve stopped walking.

“You two have a nice day, m‘kay.” I step off the sidewalk to pass them.

I’d like to say their behavior is atypical. If I hear “You’re like the Jolly Green Giant. Only less green” one more time …

For the record, I am not jolly.

There must be something in the well water around here. We grow ‘em tall in Green Valley.

Does a pig need to be walked on leash for health and exercise? No.

I’m the only weirdo in all of Green Valley who likes to take my daily constitutional accompanied by a sow. Not even Cletus Winston is as much of an oddball as I am. And that’s saying something.

He’s only interested in pigs and boar in terms of sausage. In my opinion, he’s missing out. If we were friends, or even friendly acquaintances, I might suggest we partner up. Truffle salami can be incredible. Or so I remember. I don’t eat pork anymore. Not since I’ve had Patsy. I’d be offended if she ate human body parts around me.

Hogs will eat pretty much anything you give them. A few years ago a pig farmer went missing. Wife said he ran off with his mistress. Everyone believed her until his gold tooth turned up in the muck and mud of their hog pens. Macabre, but true.

I don’t eat pork and Patsy doesn’t eat me. It’s an unspoken pact between us.

Not that she’s some sort of demon pig crazed with bloodlust. Not at all. She’s the best pig in eastern Tennessee. Don’t need a blue ribbon from the state fair to make it true.

This leisurely stroll around town is all part of my ruse.

If someone sees us ambling someplace we don’t belong, they’ll leave us alone, which is the entire point.

There’s freedom in being a weirdo. Folks keep their distance. Sure, there are the asinine comments, but for the most part they assume I’m dim-witted or crazy. Fine by me. With or without my porcine sidekick, I’ve always been different. I learned early on that people like to form and hold onto their own opinions. Pointless to try to change someone’s mind. What they think of me is their problem, not mine.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Monica Murphy’s Falling for Her ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Falling for Her, Monica Murphy’s current book, is my entree into her world. I start this review with this comment because I didn’t read the series that lead into this book, One Week Girlfriend et al. As I was reading this book, it was clear that I was missing out, BUT it didn’t do anything to deter from the essence of this story. In other words, Falling for Her is a complete standalone about two opposites attracting and their journey forward when the complications of high school make it difficult for them. As I began reading this book, it reminded me of the 90s movie, She’s All That and also the 80s Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful. These movies are the foundation of my youth, so Falling for Her rekindled all the good feelings I have about a jerk jock hero and an introspective, intelligent unpopular heroine. With this story, Murphy reminds us that nothing is ever as it seems. In order to fully understand someone, you have to get to know them.

Now, to be honest, the hero of Falling for Her is not my favorite. Don’t get me wrong. I have no issues with an egotistical hero. Alpha-hole heroes are my favorites. However, Jake’s characterization as arrogant in that ugly high school bully way can be difficult. Even though it is made clear to the reader at some point that he never bullied certain characters, there is sometimes an unkindness and lack of empathy in him. Thankfully, Murphy balances this in two ways. For one, she opens a discussion about “oppositional defiant disorder,” a disorder conflated with ADD. This helps to explain and undermine Jake’s choices throughout the book. And the second choice Murphy makes is crafting a heroine such as Hannah. This is key and necessary for Falling for Her

It’s clear that this book is a continuation of Murphy’s successful stories about Jake’s parents. As I didn’t read those, I’m not sure if Jake is a “chip off the old block.” Yet, Murphy’s creation of Hannah allows us to appreciate Jake’s purpose in this book. Hannah is a bit of a loner, although she isn’t lonely. She is self-contained, self-reflective, intelligent, insightful, and completely at ease with her self. In a word, she is likable in a way that Jake isn’t. Murphy carefully uses Hannah to (1) humanize Jake and (2) help him grow to be a better version of himself. Even as you read the bonus chapters, though, Jake is still $exually motivated and a bit full of himself. There is a continued promise, though, that Hannah will continue to help Jake become a better human being. For me, Hannah is the saving grace of this book. Also, thankfully, Murphy eases us into their physical relationship. This is a slow-burn relationship, which I loved because they are high school students, Hannah is inexperienced, and it keeps the reader interested in the story.

Additionally, there is a “type” for any reader in this story. There is the “mean girl,” “bully,” “jock,” “nerd,” “artist,” “cheerleader,” “gay best friend,” etc. This is every 80s and 90s romantic teen movie come to life. This feels like an allusion to those movies, and it feels as though there is a character for everyone. Beyond the idea that I could “read” my favorite movies into this story and Murphy’s characterization of Hannah, I also loved the developing friendship between Jake and Tony. Diego and Caleb are difficult guys to love. When Jake aligns himself with them, it makes it difficult to like the hero of the romance. When Jake and Tony ally themselves, it’s easier to appreciate Jake because he’s kinder and more reasonable because Tony is also both of those.

Is Monica Murphy doing anything different with this young/new adult romance, I’m not sure. Instead, I think you have to appreciate it for what it is and allow it to ignite your nostalgia for the teen romances of the past, the ones that taught you what it means to fall in love. I also think this is Murphy’s nod to her dedicated readers who fell in love with her characters through her One Week Girlfriend series. It’s always fun to return to characters you love, and Fable and Drew are very much a part of this story. If you love stories where the hot angry jock falls for the intelligent, artistic loner chick, then Falling for Her should be your read of the week.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 It’s Release Day for Monica Murphy. Falling for Her, the second book of the Callahan series, is LIVE. If you love the 80s and 90s romance movies of the past, then you’ll love this book. ✍🏻

I sort of hate how good looking he is. And then again, I sort of love it.

Falling for Her by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, Monica Murphy is now live!

Jake Callahan. Prince of the popular crowd.

My mortal enemy.

Gorgeous. All the girls want him.

Quarterback. All the boys want to be his friend. He’s the most popular boy in the senior class.

And he hates me.

Or so I thought.

What I mistook for hatred turns out to be…interest. There’s that thin line, right? It makes me crazy. I can’t stand it. Attraction, chemistry, whatever it is, I also can’t resist it.

And neither can he.

Together, we make no sense. The odds are against us. His friends definitely don’t approve. I’m not a part of their crowd. Not one of the cool kids. I don’t fit in, or so they say.

But that doesn’t stop him from falling for me.

And it won’t stop me from fighting for him.

Make Me Hate You, an angsty, emotional stand-alone romance from bestselling author, Kandi Steiner, releases June 25, 2020!

If he kisses me right now, I’ll drown.

Every sip of air is shallow and burning, because in the arms of my best friend’s brother, I’m the closest I’ve ever been to sin.

His eyes flick to my lips, and I remember the first time I tasted him, seven years ago before I left this town and vowed never to return. His hands grip my waist, and I remember the pain when he rejected me, when my entire world crashed down at his command. His jaw clenches, and my senses come alive with one stinging reminder.

I’m not his to kiss, and he’s not mine.

I tried to stay away from Tyler Wagner, putting an entire country between us. But when his sister’s wedding brings us back to the same town, to the same house, I can’t avoid him, no matter how hard I try.

He’s always there, his dark eyes bewitching, luring me into their depths. The memory of us pulls me under like a rip current, and when he flashes that smile, I lose my breath, along with my will, unable to escape his grip and find the surface.

Now, hours before our plus ones arrive for the wedding, I’m in his arms, begging him to make me hate him, knowing he never could.

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional roller-coaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.
An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed it to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die-hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.
When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. Admittedly, my first plan was a little crazy.

I had forty days to execute it. Find a fake fiance, move in with him, and convince the powers-that-be that we’re madly in love.

Surely this British girl can sweet-talk a few American officials.

Step One: the sexy, wealthy doctor I’ve been chatting up agrees to my plan–with a demand of his own. A baby. An actual ring. A for-real marriage and family. Turns out, there’s someone more bonkers than me.

So Step Two: I now have forty days to convince my fake fiance that we can’t be real.

Because there’s no such thing as love at first sight–right?

Excerpt:

“You’re fucking brilliant.”

“Huh?” Ezra asks absentmindedly, paying more attention to the flame under his pan than to my compliment. “What’d you say?”

“I said you’re brilliant.” I hold up the iPad I’m using to read his manuscript. “Your book, the YLA story, is incredible, Ez.”

“Oh. Thanks.” He flashes me a smile and then goes back to his French toast. “The key to getting this right is the milk-to-bread ratio.”

I hop off the counter and walk over to stand beside him at the stove. “Would you forget about your French toast for a minute and listen to me?”

“But it’s stuffed French toast.” He takes the pan off the burner and pulls me into his arms. “And I could listen to you all day. What were you saying? Something about me being a handsome, sexy genius?”

“Um…those weren’t my exact words.” I laugh up at him.

“I could have sworn that’s what you said, and I’m never wrong.” He slides his hands over my ass in a pair of his boxer shorts. “Some even say I’m fucking brilliant.”

“They probably just like your big dick,” I whisper and blink up at him as innocently as I can manage.

“I get that a lot.” He drops a kiss on my head and turns back to his French toast. I lean down to rest an elbow on the counter and watch him work.

“A lot?” I ask teasingly. “Have there been a lot?”

He pauses mid-toast-flip and slants me a glance. “Are you asking how many people I’ve had sex with?”

“I mean, it’s none of my business. If you don’t want to—”

“Eight.”

Eight?

Lord above, only eight?!

“Oh.” I straighten and rest my hip against the counter. “What a, um, single-digit number that is.”

“What about you?”

What about me? I’m tabulating years of hook-ups, one-night stands, fuck bois and carrying the one.

“If you don’t want to,” he says, cracking an egg into a bowl, “it’s fine. I don’t care how many people—”

“I don’t know.”

He glances up from whisking eggs, a small frown puckering his dark brows. “You don’t know what?”

“My number. I don’t know how many people I’ve been with.”

He resumes whisking, his frown clearing. “Oh.”

The whisking eggs and whirring refrigerator are the only sounds in the kitchen. I’ve never been embarrassed by my choices. I enjoy sex. I’ve had it with a lot of people. People I really liked…or tolerated…but didn’t want to commit to. I’ve always been safe and never mean about it. I was upfront, and when someone wanted more, I let them know “more” wasn’t an option.

“I just never…” I cross my arms over my stomach, fold one bare foot over the other. “I haven’t been interested in committed relationships. There hasn’t been anyone I wanted that with.”

“Tru.” He stops whisking and gives me the full impact of his undivided attention. His eyes are placid blue. No shadows or undercurrents. “I don’t care.” Ezra pushes the bowl aside and faces me. “But there is something I feel like we should be clear on regarding how you’ve handled sex in the past.”

Here we go.

“You’ve never wanted to commit before,” he says.

“Right. I’ve never wanted any strings attached.”

“I know I said we could be just sex, no emotional attachments.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “But I feel like I have to be honest with you. Having you back in my life has been…it’s been exactly what I need, and what I felt last night… I’ve never felt that way before.”

I’m not even sure my heart is beating, but it also feels like there’s a tumult in my chest. “What are you saying, Ez?”

His mouth flattens into a hard line and his jaw hardens to stone. “I want strings.”

“Y-you do?”

“I want strings.” He links our fingers, strokes his thumb across my palm. “Ropes, if necessary. I want anything that keeps you with me and me with you and tells everyone else don’t even think about it.”

I’m stunned and incredibly turned on, but that doesn’t take much where Ezra’s concerned.

“You…you do?” I ask faintly…again.

“I wouldn’t do well sharing you.”

Prologue

The world is a fucked up place.

That was probably the first lesson I learned in life. A hard-taught lesson when he’d yell at me or slap me. Or worse.

He was supposed to love us. To protect us.

But “supposed to” is only the truth in a fairy tale world. We lived in the real world, my sister and me. And when it got to be too much—when there was nothing and no one we could turn to except each other—that’s when we ran.

I’ve done things I’m ashamed of. Things I had to in order to survive. To keep us safe.

And I learned a long time ago not to trust anyone but myself and my sister. Because the people who are supposed to protect you will fail you. And the people who are supposed to love you can just as easily be monsters.

But lately, things have started to shift. My world is opening, and people are surprising me. I’m letting down my guard; I’m letting people in.

It’s a mistake, and I know it. Because now he’s come into my life.

And though I know I need to keep my distance—though I know damn well that he’s going to hurt my heart—I can’t help but slide down that hill toward him, terrified all the while that he won’t be strong enough to catch me.

And even more scared that he will.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: A.L. Jackson’s Catch Me When I Fall ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I am completely and utterly drawn to the A.L. Jackson’s Falling Stars series. I said in my review of the first book, Kiss the Stars, that there is a poetry to Jackson’s books. In her second book, Catch Me When I Fall, Jackson continues her poetic storytelling. In this book, the danger of silence threatens the lives of her characters, and it makes for a compelling, page-turning ride.

This story continues to follow the journey of Carolina George. In the first book, the story revolved around Leif, the group’s drummer. In this story, Emily, the lead singer and only female, is struggling. Her ambition and drive to “make it” in the business is faltering. Her bandmates are clueless about her anxiety and reticence to sign a lucrative contract. What they don’t know is that Emily is harboring a secret, and her silence keeps her closed off and scared. When a record executive from the company that wants to sign Carolina George joins them on tour, Emily feels inexplicably drawn to him. Like Emily, Royce is also harboring a secret. As Emily and Royce are drawn to each other by some force, Royce’s secret threatens any future between the two of them. Is it possible for Emily and Royce to make beautiful music together?

At its core, Catch Me When I Fall is a beautiful story of two people who are hiding secrets. For one of them, it is dangerous. For the other, it will unravel the other’s world, while also championing for a family member. It is in this story arc where Jackson shows us the power of love to overcome fear and allow for forgiveness. As she lays out her story, you can’t help but fall in love with Royce and Emily. Their story is heavy and sensual and compelling. Jackson develops a magnetism between the two of them that pulls you into the story. It is overwhelming in all the best ways. As they come together and become pulled apart over and over again, your heart breaks for them each time, but Jackson’s ability to pace her story keeps you engaged. You need Royce and Emily to find their happy ending, and you’re willing to feel their pain and joy in equal measure. I think that’s what I love about Jackson’s storytelling. She has this ability to invest you in her characters. It doesn’t matter if they are doctors or construction workers or restaurant owners or bakers or rock stars. You feel connected to them, and their journey feels important to you. Royce and Emily are two people with some mortal wounds that simply need healing through their love for each other.

Even more, there is a poetics to Jackson’s writing. In this series and her Bleeding Stars series, Jackson’s story feels like a song. She makes songwriting look so easy as she presents her characters’ lyrics and music on the page. Yet, her style also follows this same meter. It is sometimes the difficulty in reading her stories. There are times when Jackson’s insistence on writing in fragments can slow the story down. Because you have to work between the phrases, it takes more time to move through the story. This could be intentional; if it is, it’s genius. However, when you want to get to the happily-ever-after for her characters, it can make the reader feel impatient, as the style slows the story. In Catch Me When I Fall, one of my favorite parts is the creation of a song between Emily and Royce. Their song becomes like a love letter, as their journey progresses through the story. That song is the memento of their journey, and it grounds their relationship when it feels lost. I loved that aspect of this book.

Lastly, there is a key message for women in this story. I want to divulge it, but to do so would spoil this book for the reader. Instead, I encourage you to read Catch Me When I Fall, so that you can be challenged to find a voice in the midst of injustice, to face fear and make choices even when it might come at some personal cost. In our world today, that message is more important than it ever has been.

Oh how I love A.L. Jackson’s storytelling. The lyricism, her compelling romance, and the ethereal nature of your writing feel gratuitous and a personal treat. Emily and Royce’s story in Catch Me When I Fall is the type of romance we’ve come to love from Jackson: these are soulmates, fated for each other. However, in order to get there, they have to love themselves first, while finding their eternity together.

In love and romance,

Professor A
