Oh boy. I have been waiting for the words to write this article. When I picked up L.B. Dunbar’s Silver Mayor, I had no idea what a treat I’d be in for. I mean, I had a feeling as I had loved Silver Brewer (Giant’s story) and Silver Player (Billy’s romance). Dunbar has this way of creating compelling silver foxes whose life trajectories feel very similar to my own 40-ish something existence. What I didn’t realize was that she was saving some of her best for last. 

Silver Mayor offers the story of Charlie Harrington, an attorney and mayor of Blue Ridge, Georgia. Other than a horrific divorce, Charlie Harrington has lived his life by the rules. As a single dad and the mayor of a town, he has carefully curated his choices to both protect his daughter and his town. Then, Janessa Cruz comes to Blue Ridge, and the careful plodding of Charlie’s life becomes upended. The chemistry between these two sizzles from the start, and this creates moments where Charlie and Janessa simply cannot contain their chemistry. However, as their pasts seek to interrupt their lives, their burgeoning coupledom becomes threatened. And this…this causes Charlie and Janessa to almost lose control of themselves and their potential future together. 

When I picked up Silver Mayor, I started reading it while reading another book. I do this often because I love variety. My intention was to read a couple of chapters of this story and switch to the other. What ended up happening was a binge-read of Dunbar’s story. I couldn’t put this romance down for so many reasons, so here goes:

1. Charlie Harrington is dirty. Honestly, he’s dirtier than Giant and Billy combined by my estimation. And I loved it, not because I love dirty romance (although I do). I loved it because Dunbar takes this rule-following, worries about everyone’s opinion man and crafts him to be a dirty-talking alpha-male in the bedroom. Charlie is a man in control at all times. With Janessa Cruz, though, he cannot stop himself from taking her anywhere at any time. This loss of control is exciting from a romance reader’s perspective because anytime a controlled hero or heroine loses control due to passion it makes for these fiery reads. And this is definitely the case with Silver Mayor. Charlie’s evolution to a man who lives his passion makes this story an exciting one. 
2. Janessa Cruz is any woman who has been spurned by her husband for his own selfish desires and finds herself without a definitive plan for the future. Through Janessa’s characterization, Dunbar throws messages about autonomy and agency into her romance. Janessa exposes Dunbar’s readers to discussions about power and authority in relationships, the plight of women to be given a voice, and the fight of single mothers to protect and provide for their children. While Charlie acts as, to a certain degree, the levity of this story, Janessa is its gravity. As she struggles to create a new life for herself and her child, she must navigate an attraction grounded in unbridled passion. Her journey becomes the complication of this romance, and Dunbar deftly maneuvers her through it in a way that compels the reader further into the story. One of the reasons I couldn’t put Silver Mayor down is Janessa’s story. It would be easy for Dunbar to partner them together, “saving” Janessa from the trials of her life. However, Dunbar doesn’t take that easy route. Instead, she establishes moments where Janessa gains her autonomy and stands in it for herself and her daughter. Charlie never saves her; instead, Janessa’s agency lies within herself. 
3. Lastly, one of my other favorite parts of Silver Mayor is its inclusion of the extended Harrington clan. Not only do we harken back to her Sexy Silver Foxes books of Second Chance and Wine&Dine, she reminds us why we love the Harringtons from Silver Brewer and Silver Player. Billy Harrington is his typical playful self in this book, and it connects us over and over again to Dunbar’s universe of characters. These voices lend some mirth to Charlie and Janessa’s story, but, more importantly, they also offer them wisdom. As these two struggle, the extended cast of Dunbar’s characters assists her hero and heroine in their journey towards each other. They also tease us for future stories. Personally, I can’t wait for the next book in her The Silver Foxes of Blue Ridge, Silver Biker, as I know James’s story will be the most impactful (I think) of the series. We meet him a bit more in Charlie’s story, as a keen set up for Dunbar’s last book. From a writing perspective, Dunbar’s ability to juggle her characters is part of the reasons we keep reading her books. 

I’ve said this before in other reviews. I am a HUGE fan of L.B. Dunbar’s for a few reasons. For one, she writes characters that I personally relate with. Their challenges and mindsets mimic some of my own, and as a reader, I love to “find” myself represented in someone’s books. Secondly, there is an ease to Dunbar’s writing, so that reading her books urges you forward. Every book she writes, I typically read in one sitting because the pacing and story pull you through it. Lastly, L.B. Dunbar’s characters feel like real people with real-world problems. We find pieces of ourselves in characters such as Charlie and Janessa. Even if our experiences aren’t exactly the same, we are able to connect with their challenges to live with our passion, challenging social rules, OR having to find a new path for ourselves when those societal rules want to imprison us. That is the essence of Dunbar’s Silver Mayor. If you love a single-dad, dirty-talking, “good guy” mayor and an intelligent, insightful, headstrong woman, then you absolutely want to read L.B. Dunbar’s newest book.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

LK Farlow’s Rebel Desire continues what I’ll call her Rebel series. While I missed reading the first book of the series, Rebel Heart, I met Farlow with the second book of the series, Rebel Soul. With that book, I appreciated the heroine, Stacia, for her strength and willingness to persevere through her situation. What I struggled with was the pacing of the story and the sometimes confusing chemistry between the hero, Wes, and Stacia. Wes’s friend and lawyer in that book, Colton, intrigued me however. I’m a sucker for grumpy, alpha heroes. They tend to be undermined by a strong heroine in a way that makes my heart swoon. With that knowledge, I decided to read an ARC for an honest review. While there are some parts of Rebel Desire that I appreciated, I am still struggling with some of the same issues from Rebel Soul. 

Let me begin with the challenges. First of all, the pacing of Rebel Desire seems uneven. It stutters at some points, and it feels like two stories are being told: the opposites attract, contemptuous romance between Colton and Ashley AND Colton’s single daddy story. The first one comes before the second one, and it makes it confusing at times as they can undermine the other. Had Farlow developed one of them more distinctly (for me that would have been the single father story), it would have felt less uneven. Even more, there are parts of the story that don’t feel concluded well, namely the disgruntled bride and Cruz’s mother. 

Secondly, the chemistry between Ashley and Colton is a mixed bag mostly because Colton’s character development feels uneven too. For one, it’s hard to understand why he so willing begins to “fall” for Ashley when “she’s not his type” and “she’s unprofessional.” Then, he becomes protective of her. It feels like whiplash between these two, namely due to Colton. If a man treated me as Colton treats Ashley, I don’t know that I would (1) continue to seek him out for legal advice and (2) help him when he needs help with his son. I understand Farlow’s intent, however, with their coupling, but there were times when their physicality didn’t feel organic. I don’t know that I believed them as a couple for much of the story. 

Now, Ashley’s characterization is worth reading Rebel Desire. This is the type of heroine you love. She’s intuitive, compassionate, intelligent, and strong. She knows herself, and she’s attuned to Colton in a way that Colton is not self-reflective enough for himself. She is responsible for settling Colton’s son, Cruz, and helping them develop a relationship. She sees Colton when Colton is unable to see himself. She is my favorite part of the book, just as Stacia was my favorite part of Rebel Soul. Crafting heroines is clearly Farlow’s forte. 

Additionally, Cruz and Colton’s evolution is heartwarming. As Cruz recognizes that his value doesn’t lie in his actions you can’t help but fall deeper for him. When Colton shows Cruz unconditional love, he redeems himself from the inconsistent and sometimes boorish way that he handles Ashley. 

There is also something in Rebel Desire about the strength and empowerment of women. I see Farlow working to show us women who are interesting and in control of their agency. This is always important in romance, but I think Colton can sometimes undermine Ashley’s agency and becomes troublesome, making it difficult to easily like him. He tends to control their relationship in a way that I don’t like. 

Overall, I see LK Farlow’s direction with this series of standalones. She loves pairing these interesting, creative, non-standard heroines with your standard heroes, letting the fireworks explode at will. I can appreciate that. Should you read this book? Yes especially if you love to read a grumpy hero brought to his knees. If that’s your romance crack, then Rebel Desire is a guaranteed one-click.

“I’ve just confessed to having a crush on you and catfishing you,” Felicia said. “Should I leave?”

“But you really do love Russian authors, British rock, and Australian beaches?”

I tried to mentally scroll through all of our conversations and ascribe them to the woman standing in front of me. It wasn’t hard to see that it made more sense than the woman I’d gone to dinner with. The real Savannah. Who had been sweet but not as sharp-witted.

Hannah settles into the chair closest to mine, a sketchpad in her hands. She flips through it, and I can see page after page of drawings, some of them so realistic I want to tell her to stop so I can really check them out, but I keep quiet. I’m not about to bring attention to myself again. I don’t want to get kicked out of the class.
I freaking need this class.
By the time Sanborne is done talking and telling all of us to try our hand at drawing, I feel like I’m about to burst with my need to talk to Hannah. “You mad at me?”
Her head bent, she’s concentrating on the movements of her pencil across the paper. “What?” she asks distractedly.
“Hannah.” She glances up at me when I say her name, those pretty blue eyes extra wide. “Are you mad at me?”
She frowns. “Why do you think I’m mad at you?”
“Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the way you’ve avoided me since class started,” I tell her. “I was the last person you gave a sketchpad to.”
“Maybe I saved the best for last?” she says weakly.
I don’t smile. I don’t say a word. This usually works for me.
But Hannah’s quiet too. And stubborn. I can tell by the jut of her chin. The way she studies me, her expression blank.
Damn. She’s good.
“Are you only going to talk to me on Snap, but not at school?” I ask, my voice low.
She blinks rapidly, like she can’t believe what I just said. “No.”
“That’s what it seems like.”
A sigh escapes her and she drops her head, refocusing on the sketchpad. “I don’t know how to talk to you.”
“Huh?”
“In person.” She looks up, then immediately looks away. “I’m an idiot.”
A smile starts to curl my lips and I immediately tell myself to stop. “You’re not an idiot.”
“I’m sorry if I hurt your feelings,” she murmurs morosely.
“You’re forgiven.”
She lifts her head when I say that, her plump lips turned upward, and I’m hit with a sudden flash of wanting to kiss her.
Yeah. No. Not going to happen.
“Great, thanks so much,” she returns, then gestures toward my blank sketchpad. “You better get started. She’s going to want to check out your technique.”
“I’ve got the best technique in this school, don’t you know?” I can’t help but say, and Hannah’s cheeks turn pink again.
She’s really cute when she blushes.
“Don’t be a perv,” she says, grabbing my discarded pencil and pointing it toward me. “Start drawing.”
“Do I have to?” I slide my fingers onto hers, my thumb curling around hers before I pluck the pencil from her grip.
“Y-yes. You do.” Her voice is shaky, and I wonder if my touch affected her.
I hope it did. All I have to do is look at her and she affects me.
Whatever’s happening between us is confusing as hell.
“I didn’t listen to a word the teacher said,” I tell Hannah, and she scoots her chair closer to mine, launching into the same lecture Sanborne did, almost word for word.
I listen to the rhythm of Hannah’s speech, the excited way she speaks. She loves art, I can tell, and she genuinely wants to help me. I stare at her mouth, the way it moves, how her front teeth protrude the slightest bit, giving her this sexy overbite. I’m fucking entranced, caught up in her spell and when she finishes lecturing me with the faintest smile on her face, all I can do is smile in return.
“Oh. So you do smile,” she says softly.
I turn it into a frown. “No I don’t.”
She laughs, and I soak up the sound.

“Enjoy your day off, bitch,” Chloe says as we pull down the blinds and lock the diner up after another busy day.

“Don’t work too hard,” I singsong. I’m in a great mood because I get to sleep late in the morning and I have a full day off to myself.

A throat clearing interrupts our banter. “Is this a good or bad time?” Jackson asks, and the rich undertones in his voice send shivers dancing up my spine.

“Oh, this is a good time,” Chloe answers for me, and I spot a devilish glint in her eye. “A very good time.” She thrusts her hand out. “I’m Chloe. Van’s best friend. You must be Jackson.”

I glare at her. Okay, I’ve got zero game, but that doesn’t mean Chloe has to rub it in.

“You told your bestie about me.” He smirks, and I can’t decide which one of them I want to punch more.

“Didn’t you tell Sawyer?” I ask.

“Guilty. Guess that makes us even.” He flashes me that panty-melting smile, and my lace thong evaporates from my body. Like poof, and it’s gone.

“Oh fuck,” Chloe murmurs, totally getting it now.

“Yep,” I reply, not removing my eyes from Jackson.

“You’re fucked, girl,” she adds, her eyes shamelessly raking over every inch of Jackson’s semi-naked torso. He’s in shorts and sneakers again, and damn, if that isn’t such a good look on him.

“Not yet she isn’t,” Jackson purrs, “but if she keeps looking at me like that, I’ll have my cock buried balls deep inside her before we’ve even gotten upstairs.”

I fan my face while Chloe looks like she might faint. “I’m trying to work out if that’s a threat or a promise,” Chloe admits.

“It’s a promise,” Jackson says, winking at me. “I don’t do threats.”

“He’s a keeper,” Chloe decides, tugging on my arm. “And I’m detouring to Jon’s place because I need his dick now.”

I fight a smile.
