Overall Grade: More than 5 ⭐️

I want you to know that as I begin to write this review for Ashley Jade’s Broken Kingdom, the last book of the Royal Hearts Academy, I am “all up in my feels.” As I read BK, I didn’t really cry much. After my experience with Ruthless Knight, I thought for sure that I would sob through BK. Mostly, I thought this because I knew that Oakley and Bianca would have the most interesting stories (well, after Sawyer’s…because she’s still my girl, the Bible Thumper feels like me) because their actions in other books spoke to their psychology. Pain is hidden behind tough or jocular facades. Bullies bully out of their brokenness and insecurity; class clowns cry behind their masks. And I knew that was coming. What I didn’t expect was how I would cry at the very last sentence of the book. Even now, I want to cry. The ending is perfection, but that isn’t why I sobbed and why I want to keep crying. My feelings cull from the loss of these stories. Ashley Jade wove tales that burrowed into me and manifested connection. I don’t want to see them go, but I can’t read them again because I don’t want to try and relive the magic of their stories. Broken Kingdom is the ultimate culmination of this series, and Ashley Jade has cemented herself firmly as the author of my now favorite New Adult romance. It will take something mighty to dislodge my heart from Jace, Dylan, Cole, Sawyer, Oakley, and Bianca. I felt so connected to this crew, to Oakley and Bianca’s story that, inspired by Oakley’s poems, I wrote a short free verse for him and Bianca. This is how much this book attached itself to my spirit:

Strength born of fragility

Loved raised from ashes

Broken facades shielding squishy souls

Connection healing hurts. 

When love is allowed to bloom, it 

Takes up hollow spaces, 

Filling in fissures and 

Swallowing suffering. 

Two souls in time, entwined, soaring.

For me, it’s the psychology of the characters that impresses me the most in Broken Kingdom. Jade manifests it deftly in her book, and it clings to you, the reader, creating a profundity that cannot be denied. 

What Jade does brilliantly in this book is to restore the voice of the series. If you read Wicked Princess, you should have felt the lack, the disconnect. You might have attributed it to Bianca’s evolving story and choices. You might have said it was Oakley’s absence. You might have even suggested it was the limited interactions with Cole and Jace. Whatever your thinking, what you need to understand is that Jade carefully carved that into her book as the overall experience of the story and this series. You should have felt uneasy and confused because Jade intended that. The world is off its axis in Wicked Princess. 

Here is the continued genius of Jade. She restores the peace methodically and decidedly in Broken Kingdom. It doesn’t happen immediately. Jade holds your hand through the revelation of Oakley and Bianca’s story, page by page, and you feel the voice shift. At 86% in, I felt it. I knew that we had begun the return, the series voice was restored, and I reveled in Jade’s genius at storytelling. This is her flex, and this is when she cemented her position in my mind. Her series explores relationship abuse, familial trauma, addiction, gender bias, etc. It finds its fever pitch and resolution in Broken Kingdom. And yet, Jade provides the salve, bringing the series to a conclusion in BK that rights all of its wrongs (that is story-driven only…there is nothing wrong with the craftsmanship of this story). It leaves us satiated yet already nostalgic for its characters and their stories (hence, my feels). This series is a tour de force. It’s my favorite new adult series to date because, while it has moments of teen farcicality, it always feels real. It was easy to suspend my disbelief with the bully themes because, while sometimes hyperbolized, Jade shows it is grounded in life. She knows who she is as a writer, and it has power in her storytelling. 

Jace and Dylan’s story is a lit fuse. 

Cole and Sawyer’s story is gunpowder.

Wicked Princess is the fire hitting the ammunition.

And Broken Kingdom is the cannon blast. The emotional gravitas of this book will flay you open. 

Yet, Ashley Jade will come with her first aid kit, and she sews you up, offering solace with the most perfect of endings, and you leave Broken Kingdom and its predecessors with a scar,  knowing that it will be with you for always.

I climb into the car. The driver shuts the door behind me. In a moment, we pull away.

All heat and coiled tension, Liam simmers in the seat beside me.

After we’ve gone three blocks, he says, “How long are you going to make me wait until you look at me?”

“I’m working on regulating my breathing so I don’t pass out. Maybe ten minutes?”

His chuckle is low and sensual, raising my blood pressure by at least two hundred points.

“You’re tougher than that. I’ll give you ten seconds.”

When the seconds have ticked by, I turn my head and glance at him warily from the corner of my eye.

He stares at me with such blistering intensity that for a moment, I can’t breathe.

His voice husky, he says, “Hullo again.”

Holy mother of god, he’s handsome. How can someone so evil be so hot?

My exhalation comes out in a burst. It’s accompanied by a shudder. Then I clear my throat and pretend I’m a mentally functioning adult. “Hi.”

He lets his gaze drift over me, head to toe, taking in every aspect of my clothing, posture, and expression. 

“You still don’t trust me.”

I make a sound that’s supposed to be a laugh, but it sounds more like a small animal being strangled. “Trust? I’m sorry, did you just say trust?”

“I did.”

He’s serious. I stare at him in astonishment. “Of course I don’t trust you! You’re…you!”

The driver pipes in from the front seat. “That’s hardly fair, lass. You’ve only just met.”

Through gritted teeth, Liam says, “Declan.”

“Right. Sorry.” Falling silent, he turns his attention back to the road.

Liam smiles reassuringly at me. “It’s so hard to find good help these days.”

I look back and forth between them, gobsmacked by the whole situation. I could be hallucinating. Maybe that hipster bartender put something into my drink.

I’m still pondering that when Liam leans over and settles his huge, hot hand around my throat.

I grip his thick wrist in both hands, gasping and shrinking back into the seat.

Looking into my eyes, he murmurs, “I’m not going to hurt you.”

My voice comes out high and panicked. “This is a shitty way of proving that.”

“I’m not trying to choke you, lass.”

It’s true, the pressure of his hand on my throat is gentle, but still. “Then what the hell are you doing?”

He slides his thumb back and forth over the throbbing vein in my neck. “Feeling your pulse.”

Heart hammering, I stare at him. “Why?”

“Because I want to see how fast it gets when I kiss you.”

I freeze. “Don’t you dare.”

He quirks one dark brow. “Why not?”

“I don’t want you to.”

He leans closer, his eyes burning into mine, his body heat and the warm scent of his skin surrounding me. He growls, “If you were telling the truth, little thief, I’d honor that request.”

I blurt, “I’m not ready for that!”

Instantly, he stills. His dark gaze searches my face. Then, slowly, his full lips lift into a smile. “Then I suppose I’ll have to wait until you are.”

He stares hungrily at my mouth for a moment before releasing me.

I remain where he left me, frozen and wide-eyed, slumped against the door, staring at him and trying to convince myself of several important facts. 

One, that I should be afraid. Because, two, that there’s at least a fifty-fifty chance he’s going to snap my neck. And three, that I really didn’t want him to kiss me.

Especially that I didn’t want him to kiss me. Because what would it say about my sanity if I did?

Adjusting his tie and looking straight forward, he says, “Don’t overthink it. But thank you for being honest. If this is going to work, we have to be honest with each other.”

My laugh is weak and disbelieving. “This? There is no ‘this!’”

He turns his head and sears me with his gaze. “Aye, lass,” he says, his voice thick. “There is.”

If you thought Giant, Billy, and Charlie Harrington were stubborn, readers, meet James Harrington, L.B. Dunbar’s newest hero in Silver Biker. James Harrington wins the prestigious award for Most Stubborn Harrington Brother in the Silver Foxes of Blue Ridge series. Now, you are probably saying, but Professor A, he has endured a serious trauma in his life. His response is appropriate for his loss. Well, I’m not heartless, so yes, it’s appropriate, but it will also drive you to drink as you read Silver Biker. When Dunbar was crafting her hero for this book, and she used her imaginary character generator, she legitimately chose stubbornness for his first trait and then added in possessiveness. Together, these are a heady mixture. Add to that a story that magnifies the difficulties of trauma and grief, and you’ll find Silver Biker to be an ode to couples who struggle but yet survive. 

Dunbar’s Silver Biker is a tug-a-war of visceral emotions with the past on one side and the present and future on the other. If you are looking for an easy read, the ease is only found in Dunbar’s style and the careful layout of her plot. However, each turn of the page is an agreement in frustration as James and Evie balance feelings. There is a realism in this story, and it deftly illustrates the different grief processes of people. Both Evie and James have suffered a loss, but each has taken a different path to process it. Dunbar is careful in not stating there is a “right way” to do so, but she makes it clear that one may not be as healthy as the other. These two are tortured on their journey, and Dunbar makes it palpable for her reader, investing them emotionally. 

This isn’t Giant’s story of second chances. This isn’t Billy’s story of laying down his secrets. This isn’t Charlie’s uber-charged $exual extravaganza and worries over the perceptions of his life (although Evie and James’s chemistry burns bright in this story). Dunbar holds our hand through each page, but there isn’t really any resolution until almost the very end. This keeps you on the roller coaster for much of the story. There are times when you want to get off of it, but you simply cannot because Dunbar endears you to James and Evie. These are two broken people trying to find their wholeness again after many years. It’s a keen admonishment about choices and the ways that we choose to live our lives. And with his award for most stubborn firmly entrenched in his character, James reminds us time and time again about the pain of letting go. 

I had been waiting almost impatiently for Silver Biker. I love stories that act as a mirror to the challenges of the human spirit. Even more, the romance genre proffers a happy ending for the pain of enduring that reflection. When a writer such as L.B. Dunbar does this carefully, she owns a piece of you. And she does this brilliantly in Silver Biker. If you’ve been reading the Harrington Brothers’ stories, you knew this was coming. You knew James and Evie’s story would be profound, but anticipating it and living it with Dunbar’s characters are entirely different. Silver Biker absolutely met my expectations and offered up MORE. If you’re a reader like me who adores the broken heroes and the heroines whose tenacity and strength save them, then L.B. Dunbar’s Silver Biker is a true #oneclicknow kind of book.

Hate is a strong word.

Depending on the company, loathe is a good substitute. Abhor might be a little fancy, but it gets the job done. But the word that really sums up how I feel about Liam Darcy is, without question, hate.

He doesn’t seem to think much of me either. The second he lays his fault-seeking eyes on me, he sets out to oppose me. Everything about him is imposing, as if he consumes the nearby air to power the rise and fall of his broad chest, and it’s clear he resents my presence on his advertising team. Every idea I have is shot down. Every olive branch I offer is set on fire by nothing more than the blistering coals he calls eyes.

In return, I light him up with my words.

It’s not as if he can dismiss me, since I work for his client, Wasted Words. Instead, he’s forced to tolerate me, which seems the closest we’ll ever be to friends. Fine by me.

I can be civil and still hate Liam Darcy.

But if there’s more to him than his exterior shows, I won’t be able to hate him at all. I might stumble over that line between love and hate and fall right into his arms.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.
