He wedged his large body beside me in the bed. On his side, he draped one arm across my middle, curling his other under his head. 

I watched him out of the corner of my eye, completely unsure if I was supposed to cuddle into him or what the hell we were doing. 

“This okay?” he asked. “You comfortable?” 

I was a lot of things. Confused. Lost. Overwhelmed by guilt.  

But because it was Camden, comfortable was one of those things too.  

As an answer, I rolled toward him and buried my face in his broad chest.  

His whole body sagged as he began stroking the back of my hair. “Nora. Nora. Nora.”  

In a way, Camden and I were strangers, but as his heart played in my ear, I felt two puzzle pieces clicking into place. A calm washed over me. The dark cloud of my betrayals still existed outside of Camden’s embrace; it just didn’t seem so ominous anymore. He knew all the dirty and broken parts of me and still came back, holding me as though he could keep me together.  

Sliding an arm around his back, I curled in close, shifting to tangle my legs with his. “I’m tired, Cam.”  

“I know,” he whispered, hugging me tight.  

“No, you don’t. Nobody understands. I’m a disease who infects everyone who gets close to me.” My breathing shuddered. “It hurts. Everything hurts.” 

“Do you remember our first summer together when a grasshopper got into the container where we held the extra worms? You screamed so loud when you opened that thing and it came flying out like a bat out of hell. It got on your shirt and then hung on for dear life. With all the racket you were making, the damn thing had to have been terrified, but he never jumped off. I had to peel it off your shirt, one leg at a time.”  

I gagged at the memory. “Thanks for reminding me of that. Awesome timing.”  

He chuckled and pressed his lips to the top of my head. “I’m the grasshopper clinging to your shirt, Nora.”  

Now, if that wasn’t some good old classic Camden Cole rambling, I had no idea what was. 

I tilted my head back, resting my chin on his pec, and peered up at him. “You do realize I have no idea what you’re talking about, right?” 

My cold, hollow chest filled with a warmth I hadn’t felt in years when he grinned down at me.  

“I genuinely thought you’d find your way back to me. A phone call. A visit. Anything. But as time passed and I got older, I realized I fell in love with a girl who had no idea how to be loved.” 

My stomach wrenched, and emotion made my vision swim. “Camden, I—”  

“No, just let me talk. Hear me out.” He tucked a stray hair behind my ear and let his thumb linger at my cheek, sweeping back and forth. “I know you love me, Nora. Delilah takes one more drink straight from the bottle..

“It’s a clockwork heart,” she says. “My stepmom still doesn’t know because it’s a giant tattoo right on my chest, and I think it might give her a stroke.”

A memory taps at me, floats into my brain: Delilah, holding a fruit basket at my front door, pulling her shirt to cover gauze.

“Seems like she’s about to know if I figured it out,” I say, taking the bottle back.

“She’s got better things to do right now,” Delilah says, shrugging.

I take a drink.

“Than stare at your tits?” I ask. “Like what?”

Right here, right now, I cannot think of a better pastime to save my life.

“I thought we were friends, Seth.”

“It’s a friendly stare,” I say, but I lift my eyes to her face. “Friends can’t look at tattoos?”

Suddenly the lights in the hall dip low, until they’re almost out, then slowly brighten. When they stop, they’re dimmer than they were before.

“How long have you had it?” I ask.

It’s so quiet in this hallway that I think I can hear the old house settling, each individual wooden slat shifting a millimeter down.

“Two years and change,” she says quietly, her eyes meeting mine.

My hand drifts to her waist, and she moves into me. A tiny, almost imperceptible movement, amplified until her warmth under my hand is all I can feel.

I can feel her breathing under my fingers. I can feel her heart beat, thumping away, and I force myself not to read into the timeline or into the tattoo. 

Instead I lean into her, again. My face against hers, again, the feeling that my bones are dissolving at her nearness, the feeling that I’ve forgotten how to breathe.

“Do you have anything new?” she asks, her voice nearly a whisper.

“No tattoos,” I say, and I keep tracing the flowers on the lace with my fingertips, pressing into her soft flesh, and she puts her hand on my chest, her thumb sliding between the buttons on my shirt. I don’t know if it’s an accident or not, but either way, she doesn’t move it back. 

“I did something stupid and got a new scar. It’s on my shoulder, I’ll show you if you want.”

Delilah gasps, the tiniest, slightest gasp.

“Right now?” she murmurs.

Now her hand is on the tie that she loosened earlier, the lightest pressure pulling against the back of my neck.

“What else?” she asks.

“Two years and nothing else has changed?”

I haven’t been with anyone else. I haven’t even kissed anyone else, not since the last time we were together, not since she moved back to town. 

Before, when she was hundreds of miles away, I could push her from my mind. I could forget about her for hours at a time.

Duke I’d Like to F… is NOT your mother’s or your grandmother’s Regency romance. Nay, DILTF is a dirty, delectable excursion into the Regency world. These stories, though, also circle ideas about female agency, underrepresented communities, and socioeconomic disparity. All of those sounds frightening, I imagine. Except through the talents of Sierra Simone, Joanna Shupe, Eva Leigh, Nicola Davidson, and Adriana Herrera, these ideas feel like manna to your Regency romance soul. I figuratively gobbled their stories of dukes falling hard for their heroines whether they were “traditionally suited” for them or not. Each story finds its own space in this book to illustrate a truth about power and about love. Usually, I can pinpoint a specific story or two in an anthology that stands out over the others. In DILTF, that isn’t the case. Each story is carefully wrought, decidedly dirty, and holds a happy ending specific to the hero and heroine of the story. You might think that you would grow weary of the Regency romance of these stories because, hello, how many different duke stories can you read? Well, each story has its own niche, its own voice, that makes it distinct from the others. There are a variety of tropes at play with various degrees of intensity. For me, the most compelling is Adriana Herrera’s “The Duke Makes Me Feel..” because it has a strain to it that is different from the others. Yet, that being said, all of the stories made for the perfect bedtime read. 

Even if you aren’t a fan of Regency romance, you will LOVE Duke I’d Like to F… These talented authors have offered up stories that challenge you, titillate you, and entertain you to the very last page.

By my estimation, Elizabeth SaFleur’s newest book in her Shakedown Series, Tough Break, is her slowest burn, angstiest book ever. If you’ve read any of her earlier books, then you know that “steam” should be her middle name. Her characters imbue physicality whether it’s found in a BDSM room or a bedroom, SaFleur has a knack for titillating her readers. Tough Break, however, has a severity and seriousness to it that makes steam secondary to the gravity of her characters’ stories. Phoenix’s journey has been a fraught one. In the book before this, Tough Luck, it’s clear that her past is an anchor that weighs heavily on her present. Circling her is Deacon, the hero of this book. As the owner of Shakedown, we find out from the outset of Tough Break, that he has loved her from afar for quite a bit of time. Unfortunately, the incidences of Phoenix’s past have influenced her perception of love and life. With the two of them at a crossroads, Tough Break becomes a tug of war of dissonance. For most of this book, Phoenix and Deacon struggle against each other with Deacon pouring out his adoration through words and actions and Phoenix viewing those words and actions through the lens of her past. This is a tough read in its examination of Phoenix’s pain, in her stubbornness to accept Deacon’s love, and in his constant need to love her. Consider this book like a merry-go-round, where you wonder when the characters will hop off and choose a different ride. 

What I found important about SaFleur’s characterizations and the story is its insistence on staying true to their characters. It would have been simple for SaFleur to have her characters fall madly for each other early in the story. But she can’t if she stays true to her characters. She crafts Deacon with an infinite supply of grace and patience. He patiently waits for Phoenix.  He is the consummate gentleman, and there is an elegance in his craftsmanship. And Phoenix cannot run into a relationship with Deacon given her traumas. To alleviate the torturous cycle of their coupling, SaFleur intertwines some mafia-esque story. This alleviates the pain SaFleur unknowingly (or maybe knowingly) crafts in the slow-burn romance between Deacon and Phoenix. As such, this story feels heavy because it takes much of the story for Phoenix and Deacon to find their resolution. And even at the story’s end, their coupling feels more steadfast than steamy. 

I am always in awe of a writer who transcends their usual, who listens to her characters and creates a space for whatever may happen. Elizabeth SaFleur’s Tough Break holds the magic of a SaFleur story, but it is also saturated with an earnestness that feels very different from her other books. 

If you’ve been waiting for Phoenix Rising and Deacon’s story, SaFleur certainly doesn’t disappoint, but don’t expect this to be more of what you expect from SaFleur. Instead, be ready for each turn of the page to wrench out your heart, hoping for a happily-ever-after. SaFleur certainly makes you work for it in Tough Break.
