✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: K.K. Allen’s A Bridge Between Us ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

“What’s to understand? Our roots are deep, just like your vines, which adapt to every season. No matter the harsh weather, there’s always new growth.”

Do you ever read a romance, and it holds you in its thrall? Yet, as you feel compelled to turn the page, you know the story breeds a certain level of reader anxiety. The happily-ever-after can’t come soon enough because your heart has become so invested in the characters, and their journey isn’t an easy one. However, in the midst of the struggles for the hero and heroine, there are moments of pure love, moments of clarity, and moments of understanding as to what it means to be human. This is the essence of K.K. Allen’s A Bridge Between Us.

I could easily reduce Allen’s story to a trope (star-crossed lovers), a genre (romantic suspense), a steam level (middlin’ to above average.) To do so, though, would cause you to reduce the gravity of Allen’s story. In A Bridge Between Us, Allen has written a sweeping love story that challenges your thinking about marginalized peoples, the horrors of poaching, familial bonds, and the effects of trauma. She introduces us to the glorious nature of Telluride, Colorado, crafting the nature into its own character. Like other authors who have defined themselves to a specific geographic area, Allen has done the same thing here with Telluride. I hope that she will take us back there in future books because its scenery plays a huge part in the story of her hero, Ridge, and her heroine, Camila. The landscape is a key part of their story.

Allen tells the story of two people who are neighbors but living under a feud between their families. They meet on a bridge that connects their two properties. Neither of them fully understands the depth of the feud, and they feel drawn to each other from their teenhood. As the story progresses, Ridge fights against his want for Camila, while Camila longs for him. Eventually, they acknowledge what they’ve already known: that they are fated for each other. Unfortunately, an incident occurs that unravels their connection, and they spend a decade apart. Even in their absence, Ridge and Camila are never far from each other. When Camila returns to her family’s vineyard after a ten-year absence, it remains to be seen if they can find their happy ending.

Allen’s sketch of Ridge is complex. In his character, Allen is able to focus on the Ute tribe, and the loss of their land to opportunistic landowners. As half white/half Ute, Ridge struggles to find a “home.” His portrayal shows a vulnerability, a need to find a home and a people. As Ridge and Camila interact initially, it’s clear that she “sees” the real him and brings out his layers. His circumspection and wisdom about the land challenge Camila’s carefree spirit.  In their coupling, Ridge and Camila are complete. Their issues reside outside of themselves. Allen uses that to create the anxiousness in her readers for their happy ending.

Camila is my favorite character in A Bridge Between Us because she has a strength and independence that Ridge must balance. She knows herself except when she’s striving to please her father. She is outlined in success, and you know that tenacity will always deliver her a positive outcome, but she will struggle before getting there. Allen uses her as a foil to her father, his business partner, and even Ridge’s father. These three men represent the past, the patriarchy. Their ways of tending to business and the family feuds “work” for a short time. Allen’s depiction of Camila suggests that, as a woman, she has the freedom to think outside the limits of the patriarchy. She has an intuition about how to live life and run her family business because she isn’t mired in outdated rules. When she tries to please her father, you see her life unravel. When she lives by her own rules, she becomes more, better. This feels like an essential truth of Allen’s story: that we must live by our own rules as long as they create a better society.

And as always, Allen’s story is a veritable feast of style. As she loves to do, she creates an extended metaphor in her story to truly illustrate one’s capacity to love. In this book, the bridge is a representation of Ridge and Camila’s relationship. In the beginning, it’s used as a gatekeeper; eventually, it becomes a path; and finally, it unites them. This is where Allen shines as a writer.

K.K. Allen’s A Bridge Between Us is a gorgeous story about overcoming the trials of life to end up with the one who holds your heart. It will keep you turning the page because you need Ridge and his “Wild One” Camila to find their happy ending.

✍🏻 Kendall Ryan has another book coming soon. Check out her cover for The Stud Next Door – releasing January 19th. ✍🏻

The Stud Next Door

By Kendall Ryan

Release Day: January 19, 2021

About the Book

Life threw me a curveball. An adorable eight-pound, four-ounce curveball with her mother’s eyes and my dark hair. I’d like to think my single-dad game is strong, but honestly? I’ve been struggling a little.

When a beautiful young woman moves in next door and offers to give me a hand, I jump at the chance to hire her as a nanny. Jessa is amazing with my daughter. She’s also patient, kind, and way too pretty.

The number one rule of hiring a nanny? Don’t bed the nanny.

It’s a rule I intend to keep.

But as the days pass, I begin to realize how much my life is missing. Companionship. Romance. Intimacy. When I discover my heart has space for one more female, it’s a lost cause, another curveball. The hot-as-hell nanny is leaving soon for a mission trip to Central America. No sense in letting myself fantasize about Jessa being a permanent part of my life.

The closer we get, the more difficult it becomes to keep my feelings in check, because my heart won’t listen. And neither will my libido.

Well, you know what they say. Rules are meant to be broken . . .

✍🏻 K.K. Allen’s A Bridge Between Us is a gripping romance, set against the backdrop of feuding neighbors in Telluride, CO. Run and grab this epic romance TODAY! ✍🏻

“Raw. Gripping. Electrifying. A Bridge Between Us will awaken your soul and set flight to your heart. I couldn’t put it down.” — Kandi Steiner, Bestselling Author

A Bridge Between Us, an all-new small-town romance full of suspense from USA Today bestselling author K.K. Allen is available now!

I had always known he wasn’t mine to keep, but that didn’t change the way I loved him—quietly, gently, and from afar.

As the seasons changed, the corn stalks grew strong, and the grapevines flourished with hope. But none of it mattered, not when the soil at our feet bound us in a century-old rivalry. We’d never even had a chance.

They said life flashed before your eyes on the way to death, but on that night, after my final scream burst from my throat and my world started to fade to black, I only thought of him. Of his sweet chocolate eyes, his desperately cautious stare, and his silence that carried more weight than gold.

I should have died that night. Instead, I crossed the moonlit bridge and never returned.
I let rivalry win. If only that had been enough to keep us all safe. If only we didn’t have a bridge between us.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Sara Ney’s Hard Love ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Sara Ney has this incredible capacity to write real men in her romances. I’ll be honest. There are times when romance writers who are predominantly women fail to characterize men well. They write them as effeminate which, in my opinion, undermines the importance of romance. But not Sara. No, instead, she offers up men, who oftentimes, are really hard to love. As a reader, it challenges you because you have to undertake a treasure hunt of sorts to find any redeemable qualities in her heroes. With her newest series, the first book, Hard Pass, introduced us to a different kind of hero, one who is a talented baseball player with the resources for a lavish lifestyle, yet he isn’t your prototypical handsome hero. It doesn’t matter to his heroine, though. They find their happily ever after by the book’s end. In that book, we are introduced to Trace, the hero of the second book of this series, Hard Fall. In Hard Pass, Ney weaves her magic, and Trace reads like her typical hero…until we read his book and realize that much of that is misunderstandings and ways to protect himself from women who inevitably take advantage of him. By the end of Hard Fall, you realize quickly that Trace is your favorite type of romance hero: rough around the edges with a heart for his heroine. Trace’s book introduces us to his brother, Tripp. When Trace and Tripp are in the room, you want to run from it as their sibling rivalry is a constant battleground. Even though we don’t know much about Tripp other than his ability to strike up meaningless arguments with his brother, Sara Ney’s newest book, Hard Love, provides us with a story about a man who struggles to show his feelings because it creates a vulnerability that can easily be taken advantage of.

Of the three stories, Tripp Wallace is the perfect characterization of “hard.”

What are three things you should know immediately about Hard Love?

  1. It is a SLOW BURN!! For much of this story, Tripp and his heroine, Chandler, struggle to like each other. You will need to be patient with their story.
  2. Tripp is emotionally immature. As such, it takes him much of the story to understand his feelings for Chandler. He’s rude to her, fails to choose his words wisely, and lacks the manners his mother raised him with. To be honest, I was shocked to believe that he actually liked Chandler because his treatment of her is unkind.
  3. Underneath the hardest of exteriors, he really does like Chandler. It simply takes much of Ney’s story to understand. With his characterization, Ney points to the societal expectations of athletes in sports ingrained with toxic masculinity to hide their feelings. Tripp has a very soft underbelly. His family realizes this, and they have to prod his feelings out of him. With him, we are supposed to challenge our own thinking about athletes such as professional football players and the hyper-masculinity that causes them to struggle with relationships. Remember that Ney is forcing us to think about this as you want to strangle him for his obstinancy and inability to articulate his feelings. Yes, Ney uses his emotional ineptness to force laughs from her readers, but it’s very clear that we’re meant to also question our own ideas about it.

What should you know about Ney’s heroine in Hard Love?

  1. She’s an angel. She endures Tripp’s poor treatment of her with grace. She isn’t a pushover. Yes, she’s attracted to him, but she knows how to draw the line when he’s behaving badly.
  2. She’s admirable. Her cousin, Hollis (yes, Chandler is the cousin of Hollis, the heroine from Hard Fall), is her hero. She admires Hollis’s need to distance herself from the family business, and Chandler wants the same. In this book, we find her biding her time until she can find a job in her own field of interest. Instead of living off of her trust fund, she chooses to live life on her terms, forgoing her moneyed past to stand on her own two feet.
  3. She makes it easy for Tripp to fall in love with her. It’s really that simple. Even in the face of his bluster, arrogance, and emotional detachment, she challenges him but she does it with a kindness that, I think, wins him over.

What else is there to love about Hard Love?

  1. Tripp’s next-door neighbor/pet walker, Molly, a fifteen-year-old with a penchant for helping Tripp through his relationship issues, is hilarious. It’s oftentimes difficult to determine who is the more mature of the two.
  2. Tripp’s dog is adorable.
  3. Tripp’s family is as funny as ever. His mother acts as the requisite nosey mother trying to matchmake for Tripp and Chandler.  Tripp and his brother have an ongoing battle with, quite frankly, Trace usually having the upper-hand.
  4. Just more of the laughs you expect from Sara Ney.

Don’t enter Hard Love expecting fireworks from the first chapter. That isn’t this kind of book. Instead, it’s a heartfelt and well-earned battle with a reasonable ending. I found myself muttering at Chandler’s willingness to embrace Tripp’s emotional immaturity and stubbornness because I surely couldn’t do the same. Honestly, the real hero of Hard Love is Molly with a close second for Chandler.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Stacy Travis’s In Trouble with Him ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

One of my favorite parts about writing is the growth of the writer as they generate writing. When I was first introduced to Stacy Travis, I had signed up for an ARC of her first romance book, French Kiss. And while I enjoyed her details of France, I struggled with the chemistry between her hero and heroine in that book. It felt manufactured to me, and my review reflected that. Fast forward to her newest book, In Trouble with Him. What her first book lacked, this book has in spades. Billed as a forbidden romance, Annie is an attorney hired to fight a court case brought against the enigmatic, acutely handsome Finn, a professor who has been accused of insider trading when he consulted with various companies. His talent in understanding the stock market nets him a huge paycheck, and Annie must prove that it is his ability as an economics talent that earned it for him. Unfortunately, Annie and Finn have met previously at a mutual friend’s wedding, and their interest in each other from that moment feels undeniable. However, since Annie is his lawyer, this complicates their want to be a couple. However, their chemistry flies off the page, and you yearn for these two to figure out a way to be together.

I love how Stacy Travis has grown her ability to generate chemistry for her characters. It is undeniable with Finn and Annie. Along with their chemistry, there is a camaraderie between these two. You absolutely root for them hard, but be prepared for a serious slow burn here. Their banter is their foreplay, and it takes a while for them to finally acknowledge their fire.

Integrated into this romance is a story that compels you forward too. Travis has carefully woven in ideas about representation for women in the legal world. Annie’s backstory illustrates the difficulties that women endure in finding a job based on their ability, not just their gender. Additionally, Travis points to difficulties in the academic world. When Finn’s job is threatened by a peer, Travis shows the tenuous nature of collegial relationships. There is a competition to achieve and publish that oftentimes muddies relationships with colleagues.

Beyond that, this story has family. Finn is the only male in a family of independent females. To underscore the pro-woman aspects of this book i.e. Annie’s journey, Finn’s mother and sisters show how to raise a feminist male in a character such as Finn. So interspersed with a book of romance with two characters so suited to each other is a bigger discussion of feminism.

All of these attributes conspire to offer a story where Finn and Annie’s story feels important. Not only does it challenge our thinking, but it also titillates and plays your heartstrings. Like I said at the beginning of this review, I love the evolution of an author, and, as far as I’m concerned, Stacy Travis’s In Trouble with Him is an indication that she is indeed shooting for the romance stars.

In love and romance,

Meet Stacy

It’s a rough world out there, and we all sometimes need a good, romantic beach read, even if we can’t make it to the beach. I’ve spent many lazy days walking the streets of Paris and other gorgeous European cities, and if I’m doing it right, I’m bringing you a dash of romance and a vacay fantasy.
I can’t sit still, so when I’m not hiking, biking or running, I’m playing a very average game of tennis. Background music for writing undoubtedly features some U2, Lizzo, Billy Joel, Pink, Taylor Swift, and Led Zeppelin. Not necessarily in that order. And if I could only eat one food group, it would be cheese. Or wine. Or bread. Are those food groups? Whatever.

How hard can it be?

That was the question rolling around Larissa Mason’s mind just before she asked Hollis Hudson to be her fake boyfriend.

It was only supposed to be for five minutes, after all.

Granted, that was also before she felt his hand on the small of her back as he charmed the heck out of her family.

She hadn’t heard his laugh yet either.

And it was definitely before she saw the football god shirtless. Otherwise, she would’ve had an idea of just how hard some things could be.

It turns out that pretending to be in love with a crazily handsome, somewhat enigmatic, and absolutely unforgettable tight end (that has an amazing tight end) is easy.

Reminding herself that just because opposites attract doesn’t mean they’re forever is much harder.

What they have isn’t love—it’s a relationship pact. Right?

About Adriana:
USA Today and Washington Post bestselling author Adriana Locke lives and breathes books. After years of slightly obsessive relationships with the flawed bad boys created by other authors, Adriana has created her own.

She resides in the Midwest with her husband, sons, and two dogs. She spends a large amount of time playing with her kids, drinking coffee, and cooking. You can find her outside if the weather’s nice and there’s always a piece of candy in her pocket.
