✍🏻 Blog Tour: Giana Darling’s Dead Man Walking ✍🏻

Dead Man Walking, an all-new “hauntingly beautiful” and dark MC romance from Wall Street Journal bestselling author Giana Darling, is available now!

A killer. A criminal.
A psychopath.

The Irish enforcer for The Fallen Men MC is everything good girls are taught to stay away from.

Only, I found myself inexorably drawn into his dark gravitational pull. I wanted to know what it would be like to walk beside the human personification of Death and hold his hand, feel his kiss, and maybe even earn his undying love.

But Priest McKenna is older, cold as ice, and notoriously unfeeling.

So what are the odds that a dead man walking would come to life for little, insignificant me?

When a serial killer begins to target the women of Entrance, BC, and The Fallen suffers another terrible blow, Priest resolves to hunt down the killer himself.

And when the murderer sets his eyes on me?

My very own psychopath steps between me and certain death, thrusting us into an intimacy I prayed we would never recover from.

Excerpt

It wasn’t exactly the first time I’d been occupied with thoughts of the girl with the pink ribbon in her hair. In fact, I calculated—because I was bored and, admittedly, obsessive—the first time had been two years, three months, and twenty-seven days ago.

It happened one day when she was eating a peach. It was such an innocent, innocuous thing and she, such an innocent, relatively innocuous girl. Nothing about the situation called for my attention. We were celebrating some birthday. The women brought the cake, and we brought the booze. Everyone was happy, talking and laughing as classic rock pumped through the speakers of Z’s oceanside home. I was even enjoying myself, talking to Smoke and Bat about the new advances in gun technology.

But then, something about the way she endeavoured to eat that piece of fruit drew my gaze from across the crowded kitchen of the Garro’s house. There was a knife in one hand, a sharp-edged paring knife with an ivory handle, and the swollen fruit in the other. Lower lip between her small, square teeth, Bea methodically cut into the fragile flesh and segmented it into clean sections that fell from the stone center into her palm. It was a shade too ripe, the seam of the skin splitting easily, juice splashing across her fingers to run down the slim, pale underside of her forearm. I watched raptly as she finished decimating the peach, then brought the blade to her full mouth, a small pink tongue flashing out dangerously close to the edge to gather the sweet liquid into her mouth. Greedy for the taste of it, she held her sticky hand bearing the fruit aloft and carefully dragged the knife up her arm, collecting the juice so she could once more lick it, kittenish, from the steel.

I wanted to be the knife.

It was, without a doubt, the single sexiest act I had ever witnessed. I felt like a voyeur standing in the kitchen of a family home lusting after the seventeen-year-old girl with a cloud of white gold hair as bright as a halo around her face as she sweetly ate a piece of fruit.

Then she did something very few people have ever successfully done.

She surprised me.

I watched with my head slightly cocked, alert like a bird braced for flight, as she sauntered across the tile on light, dancing feet with toes tipped in pink. She didn’t make eye contact with me, and it was carefully done. The way someone avoided the eyes of a potentially dangerous animal even as they were drawn closer.

She used that knife, now licked clean, to pierce a piece of fruit and casually, just a lazy rotation of elbow and wrist, extend it my way.

I stared at the peach, the glisten of it mimicked on Bea’s pale mouth. If there had ever before been a moment that felt more like a crossroads, one of those intensely crucial decisions in life when sound and time slow to a molasses crawl, I couldn’t remember it.

The peach had become some forbidden fruit, like Eve’s lusted after apple.

I did not believe in signs, omens, or myths, religious or otherwise. I believed in the power of action and base desire.

And even though I knew it was an idiotic idea, I wanted to taste the same fruit that glossed Beatrice Lafayette’s bowed lips.

So I folded my large, cold hand over her wrist, prompting her to flinch slightly with fright or anticipation. Her eyes flashed to mine, fleeting and silvered like a fish caught in a net, struggling to escape. I let her look into my own gaze, let her see the echoing dark there, and then I leaned forward to pry the peach off the blade with my teeth.

She sucked in a barely perceptible breath and watched as I tipped my head back to release the morsel into my mouth.

Without chewing, I gently took the knife from her and punctured the soft belly of another piece before relinquishing the blade back to her control. To feed her would have been too much, but at that moment, to watch as she ate the same thing at the same time as I did felt excruciatingly intimate.

The feeling scoured through me, fraying my nerves until I felt exposed.

I was not a man who chose to emote.

This was not me.

But I stood there for another moment as I chewed and swallowed in tandem with Bea, and when I turned abruptly on my heel and left the house without another word, I did it with an elevated heart rate.

So, that was it.

The moment I finally saw Beatrice Lafayette and the obsession officially began.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Devney Perry’s Forsaken Trail ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“Above all else, Aria was the endgame.”

Devney Perry has this special way about her romances. She takes these seemingly simple stories, romances, and she makes you feel the gravity of their messages. Her Runaway series ties together characters who grew up together in a junkyard as teens, enduring various trials, and their journeys toward finding a place. Each book, told through various tropes, underscores their early traumas and their internal struggle to find a place to call their own. Even in the simplicity of their telling, each of them pulls at your heart, causing you to gobble them in one sitting.

Perry’s newest book, Forsaken Trail, is more of the beauty of this message. In this story, Aria leaves the comfort of Oregon to visit her twin sister, Clara, for a vacation and belated celebration of her nephew, August’s birthday. Two issues of this vacation are its locale: Arizona, a desert which is contrary to verdant Oregon and her sister’s boss, Brody, a man who has taken care of her sister but also monopolizes her time. On arriving in Arizona, Aria finds her sister, Clara, ill. Brody, who was supposed to be away during Aria’s visit, is actually in Arizona, compelled there by his manipulative grandmother for his brother’s wedding. Clara is supposed to attend the wedding with Brody, acting as his buffer; however, her illness is too severe, and she asks her sister to go in her stead. The problem: Brody and Aria do not like each other. Underlying that dislike, however, is an unacknowledged attraction. Eventually, Aria and Brody agree and attend the wedding where they imbibe a large quantity of champagne. Without the protection of their faculties, Brody and Aria consummate their attraction to each other in a one-night stand. Unfortunately, each retreats to their “own corners” the next day, and they move on with life until Aria finds out she’s pregnant. From there, Brody and Aria must negotiate their future together as parents of this child. Is there more to them than a one-night stand?

So underlying the surprise baby and hate-to-love romance tropes is this idea that a life half-lived is simply not enough. Perry writes Brody and Aria as these two characters who are seemingly different in that Brody comes from wealth and power while Aria’s background is fraught with tragedy and the challenges of providing for one’s self. However, Perry deftly shows her readers in Forsaken Trail that they are actually more alike than they realize. Aria and Brody care deeply for people they love in ways that are transcendent. Their hate is created in their envy over the other’s care of Clara, and you know that once they recognize the other person loves from their toes, their love will be wild and deep. In the journey towards this realization, Perry crafts moments that feel emotional and heavy. There were times when my heart hurt for either Brody or Aria, and usually, it wasn’t in the treatment of one to the other. It comes through the realization that each of them is lonely and finds a connection in the other. Their pasts are the emotional gravitas of this story, and Perry compels you forward, out of the emotional wreckage of their hurts, into the place where they find happiness and completion in the other. It seems so simple; yet, Perry shows her capability at underpinning the simplicity of their journey with the truth that finding love is necessary to live a happy, profound life, not money. Perry isn’t “reinventing the wheel” with Aria’s story in Forsaken Trail, but she’s once again showing us how well she invests us in the emotional rendering of her characters’ stories. I believe them. My heart hurts with their hurts, and I hope for their happy ending as they encounter it. Each book from Devney Perry cements for me the reason I will read any story she writes. Through the grace and ease of her writing, I feel emotionally connected to her characters and their stories, and Aria and Brody are no different.

In Forsaken Trail, there is transformation, transition, and tenderness. Brody is my favorite type of hero: the misunderstood protagonist whose wealth and privilege are easy to judge even though they hide a lonely, hurt man. Pairing that type of hero with a heroine who seems opposite simply in her background and holds a soul of moxie, and you feel the fireworks from the first chapter. That is Forsaken Trail, and that is more of what we love about Devney Perry’s stories. Like the other books in the Runaway series, this is a perfect afternoon to evening read, and you will find yourself fully at its whim. By the end, your heart will be full, and you’ll have a sigh on your lips, remembering everything you love about Perry’s storytelling.

“He’d held me and I’d realized that the soul-deep loneliness I’d felt for years had truly vanished.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Dylan Allen’s The Rivals ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

“It’s weird that in the space of three years, we’ve gone from enemies to friends to family.”

The bulk of this review is for the new novella in The Rivals, a compilation of Dylan Allen’s Rivers Wilde world. This newest iteration includes The Legacy, The Legend, and The Jezebel, along with The Gathering. If I can tell you anything, I HIGHLY recommend these stories. For me, beyond Allen’s The Sun and Her Star, these are my favorite books from her. She has this way of mixing tropes in with a deep helping of $exy character development. The Gathering reminds me of everything I adore about her Rivers Wilde characters as they entangle themselves in their family’s celebration of Christmas.

The Gathering reconnects us with Confidence and Hayes from the first book of this series, The Legacy. Confidence recognizes the depth of Hayes’s love for the celebration of Christmas. This is grounded in strong familial memories, and she has taken on the task of recreating those memories for him. Once again, Allen shows us the power of their deep, respectful, abiding love with a helping of $exual chemistry on the side. Allen also proffers more of Remi and Kal’s lives, and you’re minded of Remi’s adoration for Kal. Beyond his twin sister Regan, Remi is one of the most emotionally complex characters of the Rivers Wilde stories. Allen also returns us to, probably, my favorite couple of this series, Regan and Stone. Allen crafts them in such a way that you feel as though you inhabit their undying love for each other with them. In each of these updates for the characters of Allen’s Rivers Wilde series, the same adoration for their stories is felt, and Allen shows why she is such a great storyteller.

Along with Hayes and Confidence, Remi and Kal, and Regan and Stone, Allen treats us to a story for Tina, the seeming villain of the first two books of the series. I LOVE that Allen humanizes her in The Gathering, allowing us to empathize with her new journey. And Allen deftly teases Tyson Wilde’s story, a story about searching for his place. I cannot wait for more of his story in her forthcoming, 1001 Dark Nights story entitled The Daredevil. I suspect that Allen will write his story in such a way that we will, once again, fall deeply for her characters and their travails.

Look, this series, this new compilation, is so worth a read. Dylan Allen continually cements her status as a crafter of characterization and chemistry. She’s a little bit dirty, a whole lot of heart, and her stories will captivate you and sate you at their end. And The Gathering is the perfect little nibble to end your 2020.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Nora Everly and Piper Sheldon’s Midnight Clear ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“Perhaps it was her human side that allowed her to handle absurdity?”

A pandemic hits, and you’re an author. Stay at home orders and the fear of contracting a virus that could be simple or something greater impinges on your creativity. You decide to write collaboratively with another author and before you know it, you have a little paranormal story that provides the set-up for a larger story. This “little” story is Nora Everly and Piper Sheldon’s Midnight Clear, a novella and the first book of their Star Crossed Lovers series.

This story follows Anna, a woman who dumps her boyfriend at the outset of the story for cheating on her. She runs to the farm she inherited from a grandmother she had never met to find solace from the egregiousness of her night. There, she is surrounded by three cats, an 80s/90s sitcom-quoting parrot, a Golden Retriever named Audrey, a llama named Marv, and sundry other animals. When Marv escapes the barn, Anna goes in search of him, only to find Him, a naked man, who is seemingly unconscious. Instead, Him aka Sam is an alien who has taken on the form of a handsome, well-endowed man from another planet come to Earth in search of his brother and sister. His heart and soul are drawn to Anna who rescues him and takes him to her home where the energy and connection between them are otherworldly. As the night transpires, Sam gains memories of his life, and Anna draws closer to him because she simply cannot stay away.

Midnight Clear is this simple, quirky romance between soul-fated lovers. As Anna notes in the quote that begins this review, there is a fair amount of absurdity with this story, but it feels like a perfect release in a world that feels overwhelming. Everly and Sheldon keep this one light, and they engage you to the finish, leaving you ready for the next book of this series. I have to be honest, though. I am personally not a  fan of PNR romance; therefore, I had to work hard to suspend my disbelief. Instead, I sat back and enjoyed the ride of this book. Additionally, I had quite a few questions that I’m hoping are answered in the next book. For example, I wanted more of Anna’s story after the revelation of the book’s secrets. For me, that was a big challenge in this book. Even more, I want Sam’s back story. Again, I’m hoping all will be revealed in If the Fates Allow.

Honestly, there isn’t much that Nora Everly and Piper Sheldon could do wrong. The ladies carefully draw up their stories in ways that provide a respite from the dreariness of our lives, currently lived in quarantine. If you are looking for a little bit of silly with a couple who pull at your heartstrings, then run and grab the quick read of Midnight Clear

In love and romance,

After working in the technology industry for nearly a decade, she abandoned conference calls and project schedules to enjoy a slower pace at home with her family. Writing one book, let alone many, was not something she ever expected to do. But now that she’s discovered her true passion for writing romance, she has no plans to ever stop.
