✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s The Strike Out ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ 1/2

Let’s begin this review with what Meghan Quinn’s The Strike Out isn’t. It isn’t a romance where the hero and heroine fall in love and then find themselves separated for years, feeling the hurt of that separation before reconciling and living happily ever after. It isn’t a disappointed hero who meets an independent, feisty baseball guru of a heroine who helps him overcome the challenges of his baseball playing. It isn’t about a care-giving, home-building baseball and a heroine with a secret crush. It’s isn’t a baseball player and his best friend falling madly for each other and having that disrupted by the baseball player’s feelings of inadequacies. And it isn’t about a traded baseball player and the conflict of falling in love with a girl who is forbidden. It also isn’t about two baseball players turned high school phys ed teachers, one who loves his baby mama and the other whose story is yet to be told.

What this story is, however, is a story about one of my favoritest of favorite Quinn heroes and his tenacity in breaking down the walls of a relationship reticent heroine. I’ve loved Quinn’s Brentwood University baseball players, but her characterization of Holt Green in The Strike Out tops the rest. Holt is the type of hero that you can’t help but love because he’s sweet, inappropriate, mostly emotionally-mature, tenacious, and patient. Yes, he has his foibles: he is wildly possessive over his heroine and he makes some choices that put his health in danger. Yet, even when he’s struggling in his relationship, he is so darn sweet that you can’t help but swoon. Holt Green stole my heart in this story, and I couldn’t stop reading it because it made me feel good…and that’s all you can ask for with romance.

This story is also about a heroine, Harmony (how much do you love the alliterative couple name: Holt and Harmony), who has big dreams, she wants fame, but fame costs…oops, I devolved into a Fame quote. But she really does want to transcend her lower middle-class, predictable past with an eventual exciting career in the big city. She’s a journalist, she sits on the lower socio-economic scale, and she has had to work hard for her college education. She doesn’t need a relationship to derail her goals, and Holt Green is wealthy, seemingly privileged, and an athlete. However, as Holt begins to chisel at her emotional walls, she begins to see his perseverance and pursuit of her as his way of love. When she stops judging Holt for his family and their wealth, she realizes quickly that he is a dream of a man. Once she accepts the goodness of Holt Green, their relationship progresses quickly. As you read the story, you keep waiting for the climax, the moment when all romances fall apart. You honestly don’t really see it coming because it happens late in the story. Instead, Meghan Quinn treats her readers to this almost fully formed relationship from early in her book, and it’s strange to read a romance where the couple is so adorable for much of the story. It’s possible that I’ve been reading quite a bit of angsty contemporary romance as of late, so that’s why it caught me by surprise. But it was quite lovely to read a romance where the couple’s struggle is overshadowed by their big love. In fact, it made it the highlight of the book.

I love me a sports romance, and Meghan Quinn’s Brentwood University baseball players have provided me many hours of delicious sports romance. Holt Green and Harmony Styles are no different in Quinn’s The Strike Out.  If you picked up the first part of their story in the Team Player 2 Anthology, and you wanted more, well, Meghan Quinn did right by them. The Strike Out is one of the sweetest books I’ve read in a long time.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Laura Pavlov’s Rebel ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Rebel by Laura Pavlov is the third book in her Montgomery Brothers series, and it’s the first of her books that I’ve read. It tells the story of Jackson Montgomery, an ambitious playboy of a hero who works in the media portion of his family’s business. His best friend’s sister, Monroe, has been recently hired as a lifestyle/anonymous political analyst/columnist. And it is not love at first sight for these two. Actually, Jack feels a strong physical attraction to Monroe, who has a strong hidden one for Jack, but given that Monroe is his best friend’s sister, he feels he can’t act upon it. Until Monroe’s brother creates a fake relationship between the two to save Monroe from the introspection of her step-mother. Then, the attraction between these two escalates, and they must determine if they want to engage in a real relationship considering that Monroe’s brother might not like a real relationship between the two.

So, here’s the thing with Rebel. This romance is chocked FULL of story. If the romance trope fairy created this story, you find the forbidden, workplace, brother’s best friend, romantic suspense tropes abounding in this book. Laura Pavlov did not hold back which means there is a little something for every one of her readers.

What I liked most is the simmering chemistry between Jackson and Monroe. When these two exist on the page together, it’s alight with witty banter and enough $exual tension to light up a city. This is what Pavlov does well in this book. Jackson is also the type of hero that you can’t help but love. On the outside, he is seemingly carefree, fun, and nurturing especially within his big family. Yet, underneath his insouciant demeanor is a man who is interested in an eventual relationship and has a protectiveness that makes him a steamy romantic. Additionally, the Montgomery family is the type of wealthy family you love to read in romances. They don’t allow money to impact their relationships within their family or outside of it. Their sense of family, integrity, and responsibility to power and privilege make reading them interesting.

What I struggled with is Monroe’s characterization. It takes quite a bit of time for her to become likable, partly because Pavlov has constructed her with a walled fortress as her emotional exterior. There is a strong reason for it, but it also creates a level of dissension between her and Jackson that is prolonged throughout the story. Thankfully, Jack acts as a perfect foil to her rigidity of character. When she eventually trusts Jack enough to lower her forcefield of protection, then the story turns swoony. That becomes the sweet spot of the book. Another struggle with the story is simply the amalgamation of tropes. There is so much in this story that it slows the pace because as one aspect of it is resolved, another pops up in its place. I think tightening up the plot beats would have improved the pacing of the story.

That being said, Rebel has intrigued me enough that I want to read Ford and Harrison’s stories, the first two books of the series. The familial aspect of this story is a major draw. Add to that a fiery chemistry between Jack and Monroe along with Jack’s journey into love, and you find a story that reminds you why you love to read romance.

Blurb:
It started with one night out with the boys.

She was the hot diner waitress putting herself through school.

I was the rich, arrogant player everyone misjudges.

On paper we didn’t match.

Yet all it took was one day. One single day to change her mind.

She wasn’t planning to spend her day off with me.

She wasn’t supposed to fall for my charm.

But one day, one smile, turned into several nights of her calling out my name.

I’m not the guy she should end up with. I’m jealous, possessive. Not here for a long time – just a good time.

She’s changed me.

But, for some reason, I feel her slipping through my fingers and no matter what I do, I fear I’m going to strike out with the one and only girl I’ve ever fallen for.

Blurb:

When a bookworm on borrowed time meets a younger, free-spirited chicken farmer, sparks and feathers fly…
Harrison Phillip Fletcher, III isn’t supposed to be here. Not in Burlington, Vermont, not running Vino & Veritas, a quaint inclusive bookstore and wine bar, and definitely not still alive, at forty-two. Also not supposed to be here? An unexpected delivery of chickens.

Finn Barnes knows chickens. The burly organic farmer knows all about rare breed poultry, but dealing with a hot, older bookseller is an entirely different matter. City slicker types like Harrison never end up staying in Vermont for the long-term.

They should steer clear of each other. But the flare of attraction is mutual. And somehow amid book discussions and farm tours, they discover plenty in common. Now they’re stealing kisses in Finn’s barn, sneaking out like teens, and burning up the sheets.

What starts as a fling brings very real feelings for two lonely souls, but a future together seems as unlikely as chickens in a bookstore. Feathers may be flying, but learning to trust takes time neither may have. Can they take a leap of faith together before it’s too late?

Featherbed is a stand-alone novel in Sarina Bowen’s World of True North. This opposites-attract, age-gap romance features a low-angst, fluffy—and feathery—romp as a fish out of water discovers the home he never thought he’d find.

Blurb:

From award-winning author Garrett Leigh comes a gorgeous new romance in the True North world! Think: great food, burly men and good times. Beards are optional but encouraged.

I’m not the obvious choice to run Burlington’s coolest wine bar—quiet, brooding, clueless about tannin content, and always one wrong turn away from another downward spiral.

But no one seems to mind that I’m a wreck. Besides me. I just focus on getting through each shift until the night a beautiful stranger appears, looking as lost and damaged as I feel.

When a mutual friend calls in a favor, the sexy newcomer winds up crashing on my couch. I don’t know if it’s his melodic Cornish accent, or his ocean blue eyes, or the rock-hard body with the mysterious scars, but I get the feeling whatever happened to him runs far deeper than those wounds.

Having Jax in my home makes my chest warm. Makes me shiver. Makes me want more. But I’ve got a pile of baggage and I don’t want to be a burden on anyone let alone a man who seems to have enough demons of his own.

Our chemistry is off the charts. His arms feel like home. The last thing I want is to screw this up. Is it wrong to hope we can heal each other? Or will one of us die trying?

HEARTSCAPE is a heartfelt MM friends-to-lovers romance in the True North world, with a brooding bartender, a rugged outdoorsman, sweet angst and lots of Shipley cider. Triggers: contains mentions of depression, suicidal ideation and PTSD recovery.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Ava Harrison’s Tempted ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“He’s as broken as I am. I don’t know why, but I can see it as plain as day. Maybe two broken people can heal each other?

And therein lies the crux of Ava Harrison’s Tempted. Is it possible for two broken people to heal each other? Drew is a nightclub owner struggling to live an abundant life in the shadow of loss, while Bailey is a rehabilitated drug addict trying to put her life together with little support and a shaky spirit. When these two meet, Harrison sets them off like fireworks. In the beginning, both Drew and Bailey resolve to stay away from the other, but they fail miserably. As their story progresses, it’s clear that they are “meant to be,” but their journey isn’t an easy one with outside influences seeking to derail their “happily ever after.”

Here’s the thing. I really, really wanted to love this story. I adore a broken hero and heroine who find completion in each other, who are able to help the other heal through their love. Those stories make up some of my favorite romances. Harrison does craft Bailey in such a way that you understand the consequences of her addiction. Harrison also shows her readers through her rendering of Drew the complexities of living after the death of a beloved especially when you play a part in that loss. Where I struggled with Tempted was in its pacing and its inability to develop into the emotional gravitas that the story requires. I think one of the biggest inhibitors to this is the shortened chapters of Tempted. There are 67 plus chapters in this book, but each chapter is fairly short, which means that the readers become engrossed in a particular moment of Drew and Bailey’s story and then find themselves moved on to another moment of their journey. This doesn’t allow the reader to become invested in Drew and Bailey’s lives because it never feels as though it goes deep enough. With the existential wounds that Drew and Bailey carry, you never feel the true depths of their pains. You receive them at a surface level so they never penetrate into your own feelings. I wanted to feel Drew and Bailey’s pain, their brokenness, but the story never allows for that.

What does Ava Harrison get right in this story? Well, the chemistry of her characters is clear. They are steamy together, although she doesn’t explicitly deliver that on the page. She offers up moments where it’s clear that they pine for each other physically. Yet, the scenes are not developed out in ways that other romance authors might. Even without the candor of a $ex scene, Drew and Bailey burn for each other. That’s clear.

The overarching theme of letting go of your past is also clear in Tempted. Anyone with the traumas of Drew ad Bailey’s pasts knows that therapy and moving forward are necessary towards healing and living more abundant lives. Harrison deftly allows this idea to percolate throughout her story, and at its end, she resolves it so that her hero and heroine find their happy ending.

If Tempted was one of the essays that one of my students had written, I would push for cutting out certain moments and working towards making stronger transitions between each of the points of the story. That, I believe, would have gone further to develop the depth of emotion required for this story.

If you are a fan of the broken hero and heroine trope, then Tempted is a worthy read. If you love a wealthy hero and a heroine whose socioeconomic profile places her at odds with her hero, then you will love Tempted. I think Ava Harrison has maintained her brand with this newest book; I’d simply love to feel the depth of her story’s emotions a bit more.

In love and romance,

Professor A
