✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 3.5 ⭐️ Review: Allie Everhart’s If I Could ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 3.5 ⭐️

Each month, I’ve decided to read a new author to me. Based on her cover’s subtle, beautiful design and her blurb that teases but gives nothing away, I chose Allie Everhart for her book, If I Could. With the promise of angst, I dived into this new book. Everhart’s story is good, utilizing a treasure trove of tropes” small-town romance, a bit of suspense, opposites attract, and a little hate-to-love with attraction at first. Was I hoping for a bit more from it? Yes. Was it as angsty as I believed? No.

Her main characters, Kyle and Sage, are likable. Even in the beginning when Kyle attempts to put Sage off with his grumpy demeanor, you want to know his story. Everhart crafts Sage in a way that we can know her; we easily earn her backstory. However, Everhart utilizes Kyle to create the suspense of her story. We don’t learn much of his background until almost 80 percent. This has two repercussions: 1) there is an inconsistency in Kyle’s characterization. For me, this created problems partly because Kyle’s changes in mood were immediate.  It causes a whiplash effect throughout much of the book. Secondly, it slows the pacing of the book down. The actual action of the story comes much later. This means Kyle and Sage’s story spins in a circle for much of the book. This was frustrating as a reader, and I found myself easily pulled from Kyle and Sage’s romance.

The ancillary characters of the story, Hank, Nina, and Josh, bring levity to Sage and Kyle’s journey. I’d love to see a book for Nina and Josh. In fact, I think they’d have more chemistry than Sage and Kyle. Because, ultimately, that is what was missing for me. The investment in feeling didn’t occur until almost the end of the book. Even then, Kyle and Sage are sweet, but they didn’t impress themselves upon me.

Will I read more from Allie Everhart based on If I Could? If it’s the right book. Maybe another cover and blurb will capture my attention, but I was expecting a bit more from this book than I received. Did I like Kyle and Sage? Yes. Did their story steal my breath and tap into my emotions? Not really.

He doesn’t do relationships.
He definitely doesn’t fall in love.

The Redo, a steamy, friends to lovers rom-com from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is out now!

Read my 5 ⭐️ review HERE.

Put a finger down if you’ve ever been a single woman who got stuck in a New York City elevator in the middle of a summer blackout with your former high school sweetheart—whom you haven’t seen in years—while pregnant with a baby that isn’t biologically yours. And you can’t believe how handsome that blast from your past is, so you unwittingly flirt with him a little even though your life is so crazy complicated you’re barely keeping your head above water, but everything about him makes you think you could totally still be in love with him.

*puts a finger down*

What? Just me?

Needless to say, my current status is thorny. And no, I didn’t miss how close that word is to another one.

Even though he’s the epitome of tall, dark, and incredibly handsome, Remington Winslow has been a single bachelor for most of his life. It’s clichéd and basic—until you consider the fact that once upon a terrible time, he got left at the altar.

He doesn’t do relationships. He definitely doesn’t fall in love.

And I’m just trying to survive a tangled web of unexpected motherhood and running one of the top real estate firms in the city that never sleeps.

He’s the jaded guy who doesn’t want to settle down, and I’m the career-focused woman with more baggage than a 747 can hold.

We’re just two friends who used to be in love.

Now, if someone would tell my hormones I’m not a teenager anymore, I’d be set.

Keep reading for a look inside The Redo!

My fingers run across the screen quickly, and I don’t even bother looking up before stepping inside the elevator—and bumping right into another human.

He grunts as he catches my momentum by the tops of my arms, and I nearly jump into another dimension.

“Oh my gosh!” I cry, embarrassed by my rudeness. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t paying attention at all.” Honestly, I’m still kind of not as I finish typing a message to my worthless assistant, but once I hit send, I tuck my phone into my purse, ready to give him my full attention.

Or, at least, as much as my mortification will allow.

I cringe and look up into crystalline-blue eyes then, just as a smile is curling onto the handsome stranger’s face. But it only takes a millisecond for me to realize he isn’t a stranger at all. Truth be told, he’s as little a stranger as a man can be—my first real love and the man I gave my virginity to when I was sixteen years old. It seems like a lifetime ago and just yesterday all at once, but the memory of his gentle hands coaxing my nervous hips up to meet his is the kind of thing you don’t forget. No matter how many years have gone by.

“Maria?” he asks, his smile deepening further, if you can believe it.

Me, though? I’m nearly speechless. Because I haven’t seen my high school sweetheart Remington Winslow in two f*cking decades.

And yes, trust me, if you got an eyeful of everything that Remy is now, you’d know it absolutely deserves the use of the f-word. Same strong jaw, same intense eyes, same full lips and dark hair—somehow, he looks as good as I remember. Maybe even better.

Goodness, he’s aged well.

“Remy.” His name passes over my tongue and has the power to bring back so many memories of the past.

Is it true what they say about your first love?

That you’ll always love them?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karla Sorensen’s The Crush ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Loganism (n.): (lo-gan-ism) that one singular sentence in a Karla Sorensen Ward romance that flips the perspective of its titular character, usually a Ward sibling or son; a turning point; a reminder that Logan Ward (with a bit of competition from his son, Emmett Ward, is and will always be Karla Sorensen’s most swooniest MMC/hero, no matter whose story he exists in.

“This weekend. Trade stories with me, Adaline Wilder. I want to hear if you’ll tell me.”

And so begins Karla Sorensen’s beautiful rendering of Emmett Ward and Adaline Wilder’s love journey in The Crush. To say that the anticipation for this book is high would be an understatement. When you live through the gorgeousness that is Logan and Paige’s romance in The Marriage Effect and fall deeply in love with his sisters’ stories in later books, you can’t help but want the happily ever after for the youngest Ward. And true to her skill and craftsmanship, she absolutely does not disappoint.

“There was an equilibrium when I was with Adaline.”

As Sorensen has done repeatedly, her masterful storytelling draws you deeply into Emmett and Adaline’s story. She has a heavy task ahead of her: make the reigning golden child shine in the wake of his own parents’ and aunts’ delicious stories. How do you craft Emmett Ward when his parents are beloved, the infamous markers of Sorensen’s talent? You combine the attributes into one while also giving him the space to be himself. And Emmett, well, he gives his father a run for the title as one of Sorensen’s most beloved heroes. He’s the definition of a swoony hero: handsome; a gentle giant; a feminist, raised under the careful hand of a brood of willful, independent women; and a hard worker. And he loves people, namely Adaline, hard. He loves beyond himself. There are so many gorgeous moments in The Crush that create little fractures in our reading hearts. Sorensen quickly and deftly fills them, but the mixture of nostalgia combined with Emmett’s own personal journey makes you emotional.

“Adaline wasn’t fireworks and lightning. She was something softer, sneaking up on me until I couldn’t look away. A sunrise, maybe. A beginning point that changed so gradually you hardly noticed until the brightest, most vivid colors you’ve ever seen dominated the entire horizon.”

And there are layers of wisdom in this story: a Loganism, a deep discussion with Isabel, and a heart-to-heart conversation between Adaline and her stepfather, Tim, that create the underlying message of this book: that any relationship is hard and requires sacrifice and effort to make it profitable (not the sexiest word for a beautiful romance such as this one, but an apt word). Sorensen has the benefit of The Marriage Effect, Focused, Faked, Floored, and Forbidden as foundational to Emmett’s understanding of relationships. It’s a detriment as much as a benefit to have been surrounded by incredible relationships, but we learn through Sorensen’s storytelling that it impresses upon him incompletely. That is often the danger of romances: the idea that romance and relationships should be easy and stay easy. However, her characters and readers learn quickly that life is never easy, and we must often do what is difficult for the greater reward. To underscore that idea, Sorensen makes her readers work for Adaline and Emmett’s happy ending. In doing so, she crafts realism into the fictional world many of us love to inhabit during our reading time. This is the single main reason why I adore Sorensen to my toes. There is spice, sweetness, and light, but there is also a shade of reality in her stories that allows us to find ourselves situated with her beloved characters. And we need the promise that we can escape our own troubles and find our own happy endings too.

“Emmett wanted me any way he could have me. No pretense, no lies, and no excuses of what would come next.”

Is Adaline Wilder a breath of fresh air in The Curse? Indeed. She is seminal and necessary to Emmett’s growth. She is self-possessed, independent, loving, compassionate, and everything good in a romance heroine. And she knows her boundaries and lives to them. Through her characterization, we learn the importance of choosing yourself and expecting a love interest to make you a priority as well. Together, Emmett and Adaline are pure unadulterated divinity.

“‘Someday,’ he said, sucking at the skin by my jaw, ‘someday we’ll start where we can finish.”

From her wordsmithing to her characterizations to her capacity in wringing out the details of her story, Karla Sorensen’s The Crush reminds me why she is an automatic one-click. I want to read her stories because I find life in them despite personal struggle. Emmett and Adaline will absolutely steal your heart, but you will end this book in complete and utter peace with the biggest smile on your face and happy tears in your eyes. I know I did.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Rachel Van Dyken’s The Godparent Trap ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

If you enjoyed the 2010 movie, Life as We Know It with Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel, then Rachel Van Dyken’s newest offering, The Godparent Trap, will be your “cup of tea.” If you have no idea what I’m talking about, but you love hate-to-love/enemies-to-lovers, forced proximity, opposites attract, and grump-sunshine as romantic tropes, then you will adore The Godparent Trap. There is something delicious about taking a buttoned-up, follows-the-rules hero such as Rip, and using the heroine to insert disorder into his life. This is Rachel Van Dyken, which means there is meat on the bone of this romantic dramedy.

There’s a good reason for Rip’s structured life. Even during his grumpiest, most staid moments, his compassion for his niece and nephew wins over the reader. This isn’t an easy feat because he’s mean to his heroine, Colby. In fact, I read another review on this book that gave it 2 stars because Rip’s digs at Colby in the first third of the story are hard to accept. He cuts her down and pushes against her inner “bruises.” Thankfully, Colby, even in her disordered life, is self-possessed. She has insecurities as we all do, and while Rip’s unkindness towards her hurts her, she has the sense to consider his insecurities. Van Dyken carefully balances the mean-spiritedness of Rip with Colby’s kindness and generosity of spirit. It’s what ultimately saves Van Dyken’s story. Without that balance, I think more readers would proffer 2-star reviews because Rip is difficult to love at first. Yet, that makes for a more exciting journey for Rip. It’s the catnip for any reader who loves a grumpy hero with closed-off feelings. Colby becomes the impetus for his greatest change and the moral of the story: “and now I knew I always had. I had just been afraid to love someone I couldn’t control. Someone who didn’t fit in the perfect plan I had for my life, not even realizing that the perfect plan wasn’t what I needed.”

Adding in precocious children and a prying business partner ameliorates the tension between Rip and Colby. Van Dyken also underscores the power of grief through her characters, especially the different ways people grieve death. The Godparent Trap is an easy read, even with themes that tug at your heart. I enjoyed it and loved Rip’s progression from a seemingly hard-hearted roommate to a swoony hero.

Title: Moody
Author: Penelope Ward
Genre: Standalone Contemporary Romance
Cover Design: Letitia Hasser, RBA Designs
Photographer: Leda & St. Jacques
Model: Philippe Leblond
Release Date: August 22, 2022
BLURB

From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Ward, comes a new standalone novel.

The day I showed up to Dax Moody’s sprawling home, I had no idea what was coming.
As a traveling massage therapist, I was used to entering the houses of strangers.
But this assignment was different from any before it.
From the outside, I’d correctly assumed the owner was rich. What I didn’t realize was that he would be younger than I’d imagined, single, stunningly gorgeous, and mysterious.
Despite the fact that Dax had booked a massage, it never actually happened, since our first appointment was unexpectedly cut short by a comedy of errors.
Certain I’d never see him again after that day, I’d done nothing but think about the captivating man.
To my surprise, he called a second time. That appointment, we talked a lot, developing a stronger connection. But once again, there was no actual massage.
The man I now affectionately called “Moody” kept calling me to come back.
It took three times before I finally gave him the massage he’d ordered. Let’s just say it was challenging to keep things professional. I was extremely attracted to Dax, and by that time, I was falling hard.
Eventually, I’d find out why he’d been so aloof, the reason why he and I could never be together.
Our story was supposed to end there, but it didn’t.
Instead, I was left perpetually longing for a forbidden man.

Prologue
Before

Julia

Meet me at my locker. Can’t wait to c u.
OK, I reply back to the text with a grin.
Five minutes later the bell rings, and I hand in my essay and dash out of class. A sea of maroon and green uniforms greet me in the hallway, girls in crisp pleated skirts and knee socks, guys in khakis and blazers. Welcome to Bellemeade Prep, a private school for the rich.
I avoid a cluster of students, stumbling and nearly losing my backpack as I hurry. Giddiness races over me, and for a second, I feel goofy for the excitement, then shove it away.
He’s a piece of nirvana in a world I don’t belong in.
It’s okay to feel as if I’m floating.
I’m in love with him.
And today is the day.
We’re going to do it.
It’s been weeks of hot glances, erotic kisses, and his fingers in my panties in every private place we could find. The gym. The drama room. The yearbook room. Once in the cafeteria while I sat in his lap with a coat over my skirt.
The crowd parts and I see him leaning against his locker.
My breath catches.
Dark red hair frames a face that angels carved. Angular jawline, lush lips, piercing topaz eyes.
His lashes are long and dark and dramatically thick.
He’s not a pale redhead. His skin is golden. Like a lion.
He could have any girl here.
I’m not the pretty cheerleader.
Or the social butterfly.
Or rich.
“Hey, gorgeous. Finally.” He smiles as he curls his arms around my waist and gazes soulfully into my eyes.
“Hey,” I breathe.
“School’s over. Wanna go take a ride in the Aston Martin? We can put the top down and go wherever you want.” His eyes lower. “Do anything you want.”
I don’t even have to think about it. “Okay.”
His fingers playfully untie the black ribbon around the neck of my shirt. He tugs it off, then unbuttons the top two buttons. His hand snakes in and presses against my sternum as we move closer and breathe each other in. We need to touch each other. It’s been this way since he sat next to me in poetry class after Christmas.
He dips his head to my neck, then bites my ear. “I want to fuck you in that car.”
I gasp as tingles erupt over my skin.
I’m new to this school, but I’ve heard the rumors about him. That he’s the king of breakups. That he has sex with girls, then moves on.
But they don’t know him like I do.
He’s perfect boyfriend material . . .

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Max Monroe’s The Redo ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Have you ever read an entire series, finished the last book, and felt let down because the final book didn’t leave the series on a high note? Fear not, friends. That is NOT the case with Max Monroe’s The Redo, the final book of their Winslow Brothers’ series. In fact, I will state it plainly here: it’s my favorite of the four. If I had to put the Winslow Brothers in order (they would both love and hate this. Jude would brag, believing he had the best story, while Ty jibes him that his is the best. Flynn would stay silent and judge Jude and Ty, caring little for my thoughts on his story, and Remy would tell them all to shut up and let me speak.). For me, my favorite stories in order belong to Remy, Flynn, Jude, and finally, Ty (oh how he’d hate that).

Remy and Maria’s story embodies the best of the Winslow family. Remy is a natural protector, borne in his father’s absence. The way that he looks over Maria absolutely melts your heart. Fate brings them together so that Maria has the support missing in her life. As Remy steps in and cares for her, you would think that their relationship would be uneven, However, Max Monroe have carefully constructed Remy and Maria’s relationship with Maria caring for Remy protectively as well. Remy and Maria are suited: they laugh, cry, and find joy in each other. Maria is a veritable heroic beast in her own right. I won’t share her story, but she’s the type of heroine who makes you proud to be a woman. And Remy is her perfect partner.

Max Monroe take their time in developing the relationship, however. Putting a name on their relationship creates a relationship slowburn. Physically, though, their chemistry is too combustible to make them wait too long. Using the past and present to tell Remy and Maria’s second chance at love story, Max Monroe have deftly plotted out Maria and Remy’s romance. Max Monroe warned of the girth of this story; however, nothing is extraneous with this book. It is precisely as it should be.

This story, along with the other books in the series, has quickly become one of my favorite series. It has some of the seriousness of The Girl in the Painting (my fav Max Monroe), and it has Max Monroe’s trademark humor. However, where the humor of their other stories sometimes feels canned and a bit obvious, The Redo’s humor isn’t as obvious. There is a sweetness to Remy and Maria’s journey that feels perfect for them. Instead, Max Monroe have carefully crafted humorous moments that match Remy and Maria’s journey. There is a specific carnival experience that made me laugh out loud. And the bonus epilogue is a wonderful mix of sentimentality and comicality. In fact, this is one of my favorite bonus epilogues, wrapping up this series beautifully.

Max Monroe’s The Redo is an apt reminder that a well-told second chance romance is heaven. Remy and Maria’s story will leave you with a huge book hangover. While I’m sad to say goodbye to the Winslow clan, I believe Max Monroe left us with one heck of a series from start to finish.

In love and romance,

Professor A
