✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Tijan’s My Anti-Hero ✍🏻

Honestly, Tijan is always a surprise. You’re never certain what you’ll get when you jump into one of her books, but there is a certainty that you won’t leave it the same person. Her newest book, My Anti-Hero, held me in its thrall. There are so many aspects to this book that engaged me from page to page. Let me count the ways…

Tijan has this way of changing her writing style. For this book, there was a starkness to her writing style. It contrasts with the secrets of the story, the quiet unraveling of Billie and Brett. Tijan’s intentionality in this is impressive.
The evolving storyline with its many twists and turns. I did see the book’s secrets, but Tijan moved it around enough that it kept me guessing and wondering if I had it all wrong.
I ADORE that Brett and Billie are endgame from almost the beginning. Their romance and eventual love are the foundation of a suspenseful thriller, which is really the focus of this book. Even when one of them considers pulling away, Tijan shuts that down through the power of their connection, reminding us that there are more serious issues in this book, say a serial killer.
My Anti-Hero is on trend with fans’ obsession with crime thrillers. Tijan deftly entwines parts of her Fallen Crest/Roussou universe with her Enemies football world, and she pins it with the suspense of the world of serial killers. All of this conspires to keep you turning each page whether it be for a glimpse of a former beloved character (Mason and Samantha) or the intricacy of the suspense plot (is Billie really safe?).

There is much to love about My Anti-Hero: their undying love, the Tijan universe nods, the spice, everything. I simply couldn’t put this story down. You don’t need to read any of those stories mentioned above to read this one. In fact, if you’re a crime junkie, you should pick this one up and get lost in its secrets. However, if you’d love to be in on Tijan’s Easter eggs, start reading her booklist. You will NOT regret it. Oh…and thankful that Brett and Billie got their happily ever after.

✍🏻Professor Romance’s Review: Tijan’s Pine River ✍🏻

If you’ve read Tijan’s Fallen Crest series, her newest story, Pine River, will feel similar. With two main characters who begin the book disliking each other while also overwhelmingly attracted to each other, Scout and Ramsey feel similar to her main couple, Sam and Mason, of her popular Fallen Crest series. The draw of Pine River is its engrossing story. Chapter after chapter of Scout and Ramsey spurning each other while struggling with combustible chemistry draws you into this new universe from Tijan.

I love ‘hate to love’ and messy romance. It makes for an exciting story, and Tijan has definitely crafted this messiness well into Pine River. She had me enticed when this story existed as her newsletter story. While I was excited about this book, I was sad when she stopped publishing it in her newsletter because the push and pull of Scout and Ramsey’s chemistry drew me in.

Here’s my issue with Pine River. It’s a disjointed read. Even though she’s done a revision of those newsletter chapters, there were times when, from chapter to chapter or paragraph to paragraph, I struggled with the flow of her storytelling and the construction of her characters’ journeys. In fact, I read some of the earlier reviews for this book because I wondered if anyone else felt the fractures in her development. Alas, I might be the only early reader who feels this way.

Did I appreciate Ramsey and Scout’s journey? Yes. The power of the found family trope in Pine River is the best part of this story beyond her main characters’ attraction to each other. The traumas that Ramsey and Scout carry from their pasts are healed in their union but ALSO through their relationships with the ancillary characters of this story. Much as she did with her Fallen Crest series, I’m certain that Tijan has unlocked a new space in which to draw other stories. When you finish this book, that almost feels like a promise from Tijan.

While I like the way that Tijan has crafted Ramsey and Scout in Pine River, for all intents and purposes, they aren’t Mason and Sam. Their romance, however, will entice and beguile you because Tijan has found a way to bring so much story to her readers that you can’t help but read it through to the final page.

Tijan’s next Kings of New York story, A Cruel Arrangement is a fitting follow-up to Tijan’s A Dirty Business. Both books envelop the reader in a harrowing tale of mafia tribulations couched in sultry romance. Where Trace and Jess’s love story is fraught with the forbidden element of their relationship, Ashton and Molly’s romance is high adrenaline from the very start to its end.

As Tijan does well, A Cruel Arrangement is full of minute-by-minute tension. Ashton and Molly are opposites: he’s the new head of a mafia family, and Molly is the owner of a local bowling alley. Her father is a street “rat,” owned by Ashton’s family due to his extravagant gambling debt, and Ashton has taken on the family business in the wake of the deaths of his uncles. They shouldn’t work; however, something in Molly matches Ashton’s darkness, and the two are drawn together like magnets.

This book has much to be solved because danger is afoot at every corner. Tijan places her characters in sundry difficult situations, and Ashton and Molly must work their way out of them. A Cruel Arrangement is page after page of trials, yet Ashton and Molly forge ahead, their attraction palpable on the page. Even in its darkest moments, Tijan has grafted a sweetness in Ashton and Molly’s pairing.

Given the suspense in this book, I didn’t figure out the villain’s accomplices until Tijan revealed it. This, thankfully, kept me turning the pages of her story. The ending, however, was abrupt and not fully fleshed out. Yet, I’d like to believe there might be another book.

If you’re an avid reader of suspenseful, dark mafia, A Cruel Arrangement will give you some good feels, but I’m not sure the most dedicated reader of mafia romance will find it dark enough. In the end, I’m here for Tijan and her stories, and this newest book didn’t disappoint.
