✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Kristen Ashley’s Avenging Angel ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Two truths are self-evident about Kristen Ashley and her brand of romance: she writes the found family trope better than just about everyone, and she is the queen of writing a girl gang. Over and over again, whether it’s the Rock Chicks, her Dream Team ladies, or MC babes, Ashley wins her readers over with the characteristics of her writing that matter to her readers: community and depth of storytelling. Her latest book, Avenging Angel, of her spinoff Rock Chicks series, Avenging Angel, is no different. If you’ve read her Rock Chick/Hot Bunch series or her Dream Team series, you’ve read this story before: quirky, independent FMC, attractive, protective MMC, and a plot infused with past characters, suspenseful moments, and pure romance. Avenging Angel is no different. Well, except that it is in a way. 

Reading Avenging Angel was like going home after a long stay away. Ashley recognizes the interests of her readers, and the Rock Chicks/Hot Bunch/Dream Team have been her bread and butter, so to speak. While she has written several novels in that series, there are beloved characters, the next generation, that have piqued the curiosity of her fan base. Sniff aka Julien Jackson aka Cap has found keen interest from readers. To grant us access to his story, set it in Phoenix (also connecting us to her River Rain series…), and bring back characters such as Mace, Lee, and the rest of the Hot Bunch, is a dream to many of us, her dedicated readers. Here’s where Ashley deviated with this story, where I think she has listened to readers or read reviews. It can be hard to accept a true alpha hero today. Some might consider it toxic masculinity. While she could write that type of hero ten or so years ago, it’s a hard pill to swallow today. This is where her genius lies with this new series. Julien (“Cap”) has learned from the best: the Hot Bunch but also his adopted mother, Shirleen. As such, Ashley gifts us with a modern-day hero, one who is both protective and possessive but also acknowledges and respects Rachel aka Raye’s choices. Cap and Raye work together acknowledging each other’s strengths and personal choices. We can still fall in love with Cap’s want to protect Raye, while also recognizing her autonomy and authority. This reads like growth in these beloved Kristen Ashley universes. And I’m here for it. 

Even more, Ashley has gifted us with more of her universe. The rest of the Angels are coming, Tito and Tex as protective father figures, and the potential for connections to the River Rain gang means an opportunity for more stories like Cap and Raye’s. The overall story behind this series, a dangerous element threatening the local community, is the thread between the books. Ashley’s focus on the plight of $ex workers and human trafficking lends gravity to her newest romance. Her allusion to Charlie’s Angels makes for a titillating read especially if you were raised on Kelly Garrett, Jill Munroe, and Sabrina Duncan. These were women who were both beautiful and intelligent. And this is the foundation of Kristen Ashley’s Avenging Angel series. In 2024, a romance such as this one is needed, showcasing the strength of women with men at their backs to support their choices. 

Thank you, Kristen, for reminding me, once again, why your stories are supreme. Avenging Angel did not disappoint. It holds all the best of the Rock Chick/Hot Bunch world with its own signature of female authority and power.

“Can I go now?”

When he leaned into his elbows on his desk, fingers linked, resting his chin on them, and penetrated me with his perfect jade stare, I figured that was a no.

“Do you know where you are?” he asked.

“No,” I answered.

Why was that name familiar?

I felt a strange, but far from unpleasant, electrical pulse jolt through me at learning his name.

Well then.

I ignored the pulse and focused on the fact that I liked his name. It was unusual, at least his first name was. It didn’t really look like him, but it also did, in an odd way.

“And considering you’re the Avenging Angel, you probably should know who the players are on the street,” Kai Mason carried on.

I have figured out why I adore Lexi Blake’s Masters and Mercenaries in all its iterations: her books are a wonderful mix of serious, steamy, suspenseful, and amusing (there was no great “s” word for funny). Her newest series, Masters and Mercenaries: the New Recruits, continues to bring us more of what her original series and its various offshoots have brought us: an investment in the found family of the Taggarts and their colleagues. 

In her latest book, Live, Love, Spy, TJ Taggart and Lou (the daughter of the FMC in Delighted, a Masters and Mercenaries novella). Lou and TJ have loved each other from afar from the time they’ve met. TJ, however, believes they are too different to become a couple, and he essentially friendzones Lou until he realizes he can’t live without her. Much of this story is TJ convincing Lou of their potential future, and Lou holding him accountable for his earlier decisions. Blake deftly draws the complications of their journey to underscore the reality of timing in a relationship. While it takes much of the book for them to find equal footing, Blake ends her newest story with the HEA typical of her other M&M’s romances. They earn their happily ever after against the backdrop of a burgeoning suspense. 

I’m invested in the underlying story of the New Recruits. Blake has laid the perfect foundation for more stories in this world, and she continues to keep her readers guessing about new couples, the new twists and turns of espionage, and the “world in danger” stories. 

If you’re a fan of dom/sub and romantic suspense books, start reading Lexi Blake’s Masters & Mercenaries romances.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Tijan’s My Anti-Hero ✍🏻

Tropes: FMC with secrets; anti-heroic vibes, protective MMC; football romance; insta-attraction; small town vibes; romantic suspense; serial killer fun

Honestly, Tijan is always a surprise. You’re never certain what you’ll get when you jump into one of her books, but there is a certainty that you won’t leave it the same person. Her newest book, My Anti-Hero, held me in its thrall. There are so many aspects to this book that engaged me from page to page. Let me count the ways…

  • Tijan has this way of changing her writing style. For this book, there was a starkness to her writing style. It contrasts with the secrets of the story, the quiet unraveling of Billie and Brett. Tijan’s intentionality in this is impressive.
  • The evolving storyline with its many twists and turns. I did see the book’s secrets, but Tijan moved it around enough that it kept me guessing and wondering if I had it all wrong.
  • I ADORE that Brett and Billie are endgame from almost the beginning. Their romance and eventual love are the foundation of a suspenseful thriller, which is really the focus of this book. Even when one of them considers pulling away, Tijan shuts that down through the power of their connection, reminding us that there are more serious issues in this book, say a serial killer.
  • My Anti-Hero is on trend with fans’ obsession with crime thrillers. Tijan deftly entwines parts of her Fallen Crest/Roussou universe with her Enemies football world, and she pins it with the suspense of the world of serial killers. All of this conspires to keep you turning each page whether it be for a glimpse of a former beloved character (Mason and Samantha) or the intricacy of the suspense plot (is Billie really safe?). 

There is much to love about My Anti-Hero: their undying love, the Tijan universe nods, the spice, everything. I simply couldn’t put this story down. You don’t need to read any of those stories mentioned above to read this one. In fact, if you’re a crime junkie, you should pick this one up and get lost in its secrets. However, if you’d love to be in on Tijan’s Easter eggs, start reading her booklist. You will NOT regret it. Oh…and thankful that Brett and Billie got their happily ever after.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: J. Saman’s Irresistibly Dangerous ✍🏻

Tropes: forbidden relationship; marriage of convenience or fake marriage; band of brothers; best friends’ cousin; romantic suspense

“She’s my beauty, and I’m her beast.”

They say, “Be careful of the quiet ones.” J. Saman’s Irresistibly Dangerous showcases this truth through its sweeping drama for Lenox and Georgia. In fact, for me, this final book of her Irresistibly Yours series is my favorite, thanks to its driving plotline, detailed characterizations, and eroticism. Lenox is a dirty, dirty man.

Likes:

  • Lenox and Georgia’s journey of recompense. The upheaval of their constant back and forth makes for enjoyable reading.
  • The band of brothers situation that has been the foundation for this series. It’s on full display here with the added complication of the forbidden nature of Lenox and Georgia due to her cousins.
  • The general storyline. This is the romantic suspense of this series. While it isn’t much of a surprise, the suspense elements add another entertaining plotline to the book. Lenox working to find all the dirt on her CEO and his son is engaging.
  • Lenox’s protectiveness over Georgia. There is nothing more swoon worthy than a protective, fully consumed MMC. Saman has drawn Lenox well. Add to his characterization dom-feels, and it’s pure erotic fire.

Criticisms:

  • Georgia’s easy forgiveness of Lenox. I’m not partial to an FMC who forgives and forgets so easily or who is ready to get intimate with the MMC after he’s treated her with indifference. It always tweaks me.
  • Lenox’s constant reminders that he can’t be with Georgia. Saman took this further than I think it needed. When he finally decides to live his life on his own terms, I whispered a “finally” as it should have happened sooner. 

I have absolutely loved J. Saman’s Irresistibly Yours series. Generous stories coupled with keen character journeys have ingratiated themselves into my heart, and Lenox and Georgia’s Irresistibly Dangerous is the icing on the cake of this compelling series.
