✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Pippa Grant’s Until It Was Love

Overall Grade: A

Tropes: enemies to lovers; hate to love; brother’s teammate; sports romance; soulmates; grumpy/sunshine; fake dating

Pippa Grant and her ilk (Penny Reid, for example) have this innate ability to both make you giggle and tear up in equal measure. A cornerstone of Grant’s romance is incorporating animals that either bring her MMCs and FMCs together or wreak havoc in an adorable way throughout her stories. You pick it up and think, “this will be light reading” only to be hit with the power and emotion of the overall message. In her newest book, Until It Was Love, Pippa Grant charms us immediately with the enemies to lovers’ banter of her characters, Goldie and Fletcher. Even though we aren’t present at their meet-cute, a time from their past that was less about falling in love and more about falling into hate…at least for Goldie, Grant begins their present with a meet-cute that entails Fletcher fainting after he donates blood and falling on top of Goldie, as she tries to save him from hurting himself from the fall. This, of course, follows her internal dialogue about his unfortunate mustache, a foible that mars his face. Only these actions can be found in a story from a writer such as Grant who entices her readers with some silliness, only to hit her readers over the head with a helping of spice (she’s more of a 3 chili pepper writer) and an emotional torrent. Honestly, it makes for a compelling read because you’re never quite sure if you will laugh at the ridiculousness of her characters’ behavior or cry at their heartbreak.

All of this is wrapped up in Until It Was Love. I couldn’t put this book down, and I loved the adventures of Goldie and Fletcher. Goldie hates Fletcher, realizes she misunderstood him, uses him to fake date as a means to frustrate her brother, shows us the pain of her past, becomes enamored with Fletcher, struggles with the challenge of leaving town while falling in love with him, and learns to love her life in the small town of her youth.  Fletcher must learn to love and trust himself again, and Grant writes his pain in ways that make you commiserate with him. Pippa Grant owned me with this book, and she reminded me why I adore her stories. There is just something deeper under the surface of stories.

If you want to be entertained, engaged, and enticed, Pippa Grant’s Until It Was Love is EXACTLY the story you need right now.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Pippa Grant’s The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire, a Three BFFs and A Wedding Romance ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Tropes/Characteristics: runaway bride FMC; movie star MMC; close proximity; surprise baby; second chance; small town; found family; opposites attract

Throughout reading Pippa Grant’s The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire, I kept asking myself what is it about her romances that tug at me. At face value, Pippa Grant writes quirky rom-coms. The group of writers I put her in is Penny Reid and Lucy Score. They have a distinct writing voice and presence in their stories. Oftentimes, the face of the story is laden with quirky characters and inconceivable plot points. However, by the end of the romance, it’s clear this is a facade. Beneath cute animals such Yolko Ohno, the one-legged chicken, in Grant’s newest offering and the over-the-top antics of the supporting cast of characters abides a deep, loving relationship between her MMC and FMC. There is always something deep below the surface of Pippa Grant’s romances, and the marriage of the light facade with the depth of character rendering is why I always come back for more.

Throughout Grant’s most recent series, Three BFFs and a Wedding, she’s crafted a small-town world where everyone knows everything and everyone else, and it feels tempestuous at times. In the first two books of the series, she has a big problem: how to handle the upended wedding between Emma and Chandler. Book 2, The Gossip and the Grump, is where she holds us in suspense about Emma’s situation, and she wallops us at the end of that book with a surprise. Crafting this series in this way sets up The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire to be the most anticipated story of the series, which has the potential to cause a problem: what happens if Book 3 doesn’t live up to the hype? Well, you need not fear because, for this reader, The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire is my favorite of the three. Grant definitely saved the best for last, and she fulfilled the promise of creating a series that ends with the cherry on top of the sundae. Why did I love it so much?

  1. Emma makes her MMC work for it. I love that. I’m not a fan of second-chance romances where the hurt FMC lets go of her pain too easily. It undermines the tension of the reconciliation, and Grant superbly takes her reader through the paces of the MMC’s groveling.
  2. What this does is make us fall deeply in love with her MMC. Here’s the thing: I am attempting to write this review without naming him. I know others will do it in their reviews; however, I won’t. Grab the book and find out for yourself. Just know that the inclusion of this MMC into this book is pure genius. It connects the Pippa Grant universe (which I’m a particular fan of doing – it shows me that an author has a distinct and intelligent plan for her stories, even if she figured it out at the last minute. Plus it allows us re-entry into a book world that we previously loved). Secondly, Grant has written this MMC to be everything we need him to be for Emma’s journey. He takes responsibility, he recognizes his shortcomings, there is no gas-lighting, and he accepts his reckoning, all while falling deeply, madly in love with a character who has suffered previously. This is the type of heroic characterization that makes a reader swoon.
  3. The family of friends in this series is pure joy. The needling, the love, the respect – everything with this cast of friends adds another layer to The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire. The reflections and the reconciliations make for a feel-good read.

Almost a week out from reading Pippa Grant’s newest book, and it still swims in my mind. Emma and her MMC were a delight to read, and I’m so thankful that Pippa Grant knows who she is as a writer because her books bring so much light into a world that oftentimes feels dark. The Bride’s Runaway Billionaire is simply a must-read.

Being the star of the world’s most viral runaway bride video wasn’t how I envisioned my future when I woke up on my wedding morning, but here we are.
With me hiding from the world in Fiji where I’m now honeymooning solo.
And where I just tripped over my number one celebrity crush, hungover and sleeping on my little porch.
Turns out Jonas Rutherford, Razzle Dazzle movie star and heir to the entertainment conglomerate’s billions, is having his own relationship issues and is here hiding too after details of his scandalous divorce went public.
I didn’t think inviting him in for a hangover cure would lead to us getting friendly. And friendlier. And then—okay, yes.
I slept with him. Who can blame a girl? When you’re suddenly unexpectedly single and the number one guy on your freebie list is available, you leap.
But when I wake up the next morning, I discover I’m not the only runaway in my life, because he’s just ghosted me.
It’s fine. I’m fine. Neither one of us is in a position to start an actual relationship.
But three years later?
When he crashes my brother’s wedding?
Where the son that he’s just discovered he has is serving as ring bearer?
Life was a lot easier when I was just a runaway bride.

✍🏻 You’re welcome! Here’s your weekend read: Pippa Grant’s The Worst Wedding Date. ✍🏻

Title: The Worst Wedding Date
Author: Pippa Grant
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Tropes: Best Friend’s Brother/Enemies to Lovers

I didn’t know bridesmaid was code for babysitter for the bride’s brother, but if that’s what my best friend needs of me for her dream wedding to go off without a hitch, that’s what I’ll do.
Even if Theo Monroe has been a pain in my rear since third grade.
Even if he should be responsible enough to not wreak havoc at his sister’s destination wedding.
Even if it means we have to share a hotel room in Hawaii, which might be the final duty that breaks me.
Not only does Theo know exactly how to push my buttons, but he never wears clothes, he’s hiding a litter of kittens in his room, and he keeps showing up with fresh-baked cookies that seemingly come from nowhere.
Also?
I have no idea why he’s being such an utter ass to the groom.
Or why he’s so proud of the world’s most awkward wedding gift.
Or why I suddenly want to know what makes him tick. The story behind his tattoos. How he can afford to rent a convertible in Hawaii. And if maybe all of that utter frustration and irritation I’ve felt for him for years is suppressed attraction that a good girl like me isn’t supposed to feel for the biggest bad boy of Snaggletooth Creek.
But I do know one thing.
When I find out his biggest secret and the answer to all of my questions, it will change everything.
The Worst Wedding Date is a frolicking good time of a destination wedding enemies-to-lovers romcom, complete with a good girl bridesmaid, her best friend’s troublemaking but secretly big-hearted brother, and more than one hitch on the way to happily ever after. It stands alone, has no cheating, and comes complete with ooey gooey goodness.

Review

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Pippa Grant’s The Worst Wedding Date ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Tropes: enemies-to-lovers; hate-to-love; forced proximity; one bed; best friend’s brother; opposites attract; bad boy-good girl; rom-com

I adore Pippa Grant. Her romances, aka rom-coms, are never what you expect but exactly what you need. Enter her latest story, The Worst Wedding Date. At first glance, Grant’s rom-coms are quirky and silly. However, below the surface, Grant works through common human troubles. This is definitely the case with The Worst Wedding Date. Some of the silliness of this story involves kittens rescued from a tropical island getaway, a tropical island getaway that is on the verge of going out of business as the backdrop for the story, an MMC who is a loud sneezer and who sneezes at the most inopportune times, and a variety of mishaps that seek to undermine the MMC’s sister’s wedding. Don’t get distracted by these moments of hilarity. If you do, you’ll miss out on the gravity of this story: a message about the impact of high or low expectations on one’s sense of self.

The most beguiling part of Pippa Grant’s The Worst Wedding Date is Theo and Laney’s attraction and falling in love. Grant has crafted them as two sides of the same coin. Laney has been raised with perfectionistic expectations. In contrast, Theo has been raised to believe he wouldn’t amount to much. He becomes the “bad boy” to Laney’s “good girl.” And I LOVED this part of the story because Theo gets to teach Laney how to be a little bad, embracing the things she’s always wanted to do but never empowered to do so, and Laney gets to protect Theo, advocating for him when he’s blamed for every mishap. It’s these places where Grant’s deft and enjoyable storytelling grabs your heart.

What I also loved about The Worst Wedding Date is the promise of more stories in this world. Besides Laney, the other ugly heiresses, Stella and Emma, have promises of their own stories, more quirky, charming antics to make Grant’s readers laugh while also challenging them to recognize the challenges of human nature.

In the end, if you walk away from Pippa Grant’s newest book without that warm feeling in your chest, you may need to check your pulse.

In love and romance,

Professor A

This sexy military pilot is about to meet his match in an unpredictable former beauty queen!
Kaci Boudreaux is every Southern mama’s nightmare, including her own. Lance Wheeler is every Southern belle’s dream, except his ex-fiancé’s. After being left at the altar, he’d love to take his C-130 and fly far, far away. But since he and his bird technically belong to Uncle Sam, a distraction in the form of a feisty fireball of a physics professor will do while he’s waiting for his next deployment with the Air Force.
He’s into her for the fun. She’s into him for the challenge. But when their secrets and fears start slipping out, their hearts—and even her job—will be on the line. She needs roots. He wants to see the world. What will they do about needing each other?
