Alone and Looking to Bone! Loudmouthed Mountain Man Seeks Fiery Woman to Grow Old With.

I might look like a tall, tattooed, bearded neanderthal…but like an onion, I have layers. Swipe right if you like a proud cat daddy who catches feelings after direct eye contact.

All I wanted was a casual plus-one to my brother’s destination wedding, but those idiots on my family tree hacked my dating profile and sabotaged my quest for the perfect weekend fling. Now I’m stuck on a tropical vacation with only my hand to keep me company.

Until I’m forced to share a room with the bane of my existence: my sister-in-law’s best friend.

Dakota has hated me for the past seven years. I wasn’t losing much sleep over her screaming rants because she was some other guy’s problem. Or she was, until she got divorced.

Being stuck in paradise with a woman who loathes your very existence doesn’t sound hot, but after an unexpected moment in our shared palapa, she starts screaming at me in a different way.

What happens in paradise stays in paradise. That is, until Dakota shows up on my mountain with a proposition: be her wingman to help her regain her pre-divorce confidence.

Suddenly, Dakota’s not just the person I love to fight with.

She’s the woman I want everything with.

Excerpt #1

“I think we should be friends with benefits,” the mountain man says as he drives down the interstate that leads us back to Boulder.

“But…we’re not friends,” I blurt out as I turn to look at him to make sure he hasn’t been possessed by a demon.

He shrugs. “Semantics.”

My mouth opens and closes over and over like one of those silly singing bass wall hangings. He’s got to be messing with me right now, right? He doesn’t sleep with women more than once…at least not on purpose. “So instead of being my wingman, you want to be my eff buddy?”

“If you’re intent on a label, you can call us enemies with benefits.” He smiles like he’s casually talking about the weather. “It’s honestly genius because if you’re friends with benefits, feelings are bound to get involved because you both already like each other. You hating me makes this much easier.”

“Don’t you think we need to get along for something like this to actually work?”

“Got along just fine ten minutes ago at that adults only club.” Calder shoots me a dark look that I feel squarely between my legs. “Just consider me your emotionally distant private masseuse.”

My mind reels with this proposition that I did not have on my bingo card in my postdivorce era. A casual affair with Calder Fletcher…the contractor who ruined my house and my wedding dress seven years ago. It sounds like a horrible idea that’s sure to end in catastrophe.

Then again, it also sounds kind of poetic in some strange way. It’s like revenge or something. And he’s not the same guy he was seven years ago. I’ve seen that in more ways than one the past few weeks.

I shake that thought away, trying not to let my heart get too involved with this discussion. “I thought you never hook up with girls twice.”

“I don’t usually, but it’s not really a rule I have.”

“So I would be an exception?”

Calder’s jaw muscle twitches. “Sure, Ace. You’re an exception.”

“Why exactly am I the exception?”

He exhales. “I just think you’ve been out of the game for a while, and jumping headfirst into an adult club is too risky.”

“Risky.”

“You have to walk before you can run,” he adds with a smirk that sends my belly into somersaults. “And with any luck, even walking with be hard when I’m done with you.”

BLURB:

I knew better than to take my best friend’s little sister’s virginity at that Halloween party. But in my defense, I didn’t know how to say no. Or maybe I simply didn’t want to.

She was my Cinderella and I was her masked villain.

Then I ruined everything. Twice.

Years later we’re undeniably enemies, our hate for each other legendary.

Except I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her. Or that night.

Only now she works for me in the hospital where she’s a medical student and I’m an attending physician. Not to mention, without realizing it, I bought the apartment next to hers.

We try to keep things professional but when she learns the truth behind the secrets I’ve been keeping, angry sparks explode into a raging inferno of scorching touches and burning passion.

I know I have to keep my distance. She’s all wrong for me. Too young. Too bratty. Too dangerous to the life I’ve worked tirelessly to rebuild. The one being with her would destroy.

The problem is, I’ve never wanted anyone more. And I don’t know how to stay away for long.

Especially when I discover I’m not the only one keeping secrets.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Vi Keeland’s Indiscretion ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A-

Tropes: hate to love; cinnamon roll MMC; grump/sunshine; forced proximity; workplace romance

Vi Keeland’s Indiscretion delivers a captivating romance that elevates the beloved enemies-to-lovers trope through exceptional character development and emotional depth. At its heart, this spicy contemporary romance succeeds by focusing on the compelling evolution of its main characters, Dawson and Naomi, whose journey from antagonism to love feels both authentic and deeply satisfying.

The story’s greatest strength lies in Dawson’s character arc. Keeland crafts a masterful transformation of a man initially closed off to love, peeling back his layers with deliberate care. His journey from emotional unavailability to vulnerability isn’t just convincing—it’s impossible not to invest in. The author takes her time developing his character, ensuring that each step toward opening his heart feels earned rather than rushed.

Naomi serves as the perfect catalyst for Dawson’s transformation. Keeland writes her as a force of nature who refuses to accept Dawson’s emotional walls at face value. What makes Naomi particularly compelling is how she challenges Dawson’s preconceptions about love and relationships without losing her own identity in the process. She’s written with a refreshing combination of strength and vulnerability that makes her feel real rather than just a plot device for Dawson’s growth.

The antagonistic chemistry between Dawson and Naomi crackles from their first interaction, but Keeland demonstrates her skill by building tension naturally through their evolving dynamic. The “hate” in this enemies-to-lovers story never feels contrived; instead, it stems from genuine conflict between two strong personalities with opposing views on love and life. This makes their eventual transition to romance all the more satisfying.

The spicy elements of the story are well-integrated, serving to enhance the emotional connection between the characters rather than overshadowing it. Keeland maintains a perfect balance between steamy scenes and character development, ensuring that each intimate moment advances the story and deepens the reader’s understanding of both characters.

What truly sets Indiscretion apart is how Keeland keeps readers invested in the outcome even when the happy ending feels inevitable. The journey to get there is so compelling, and the character growth is so well-executed that readers will find themselves turning pages not just to reach the conclusion but to savor each moment of Dawson and Naomi’s evolution both as individuals and as a couple.

Indiscretion proves that even familiar romance tropes can feel fresh and exciting in skilled hands. Through strong character work, emotional authenticity, and engaging storytelling, Keeland has created a romance that will satisfy readers looking for both heat and heart.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Review: Jessica Peterson’s Cash, book 1 of the Lucky River Ranch series ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Tropes: enemies to lovers; hate to love; cowboy; opposites attract; small town; boss/employee (owner/foreman of the ranch)

Jessica Peterson seemed to have cornered the market on intelligent, spicy romance set in the Carolinas. Whether she writes chefs, romance writers, farmers, lux resort owner siblings, or bonds people, she finds a way to infuse romance tropes with deep issues. When she announced her foray into cowboy romance, this reader was excited because I knew she would put her storytelling stamp on this genre. And she did this beautifully in the first book of her newest series, Lucky River Ranch, Cash. What Jessica Peterson didn’t know, through the scope of Mollie and Cash’s wild journey of hate to love, was her impressive ability to capture the trauma of divorce and death in the lives of the children of divorced couples.  Cash provided an apt mirror of my own story; this capacity for storytelling leaves me wanting more stories from Jessica Peterson.

Peterson’s newest book, Cash, is spicy, perfectly paced, and engaging. Mollie and Cash’s immediate chemistry is the initial draw to the story. Their meet cute when Cash assumes Mollie’s a spoiled socialite who turned her back on her father, sets up the emotional tether between these two. As Mollie moves between grief and ire and grief and loyalty, you can’t help but champion the coupling of Mollie and Cash. From the start of this story, Peterson held me in the thrall of her story. It’s funny, it’s tear-invoking, and it’s sweet. By the end of Cash, you will be hoping for a short time until the next book of the series, Wyatt, because the other characters in the story are just as compelling and engaging as Mollie and Cash.

There is so much more to this new series from Jessica Peterson. I love a cowboy romance, but I’m sure she will be one of my favorite authors of this subgenre of romance.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Karla Sorensen’s The Best of All ✍🏻

Overall Grade: A

Tropes: hate to love; enemies to lovers; forced/close proximity; grump/sunshine; slow burn; he falls first; sports romance (football)

I am always thankful when God grants Karla Sorensen the words, story, and characters for her next book. There is something special about her stories that attach themselves to you. When I pick up one of her books, honestly, it’s almost impossible to stop reading it, and, when required to adult, I mourn for my time in her stories. Her newest book, The Best of All, is more of all of this.

While it borrows a plot point from the 2010 movie, Life As We Know It, starring Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel (a movie I adored), Sorensen writes her way through it with her brand of romance. You may ask, what is Sorensen’s brand of romance? Well, recently, her stories showcase grumpy, protective MMCs who love their FMCs hard from afar, hiding their emotions behind walls that reach the heavens; FMCs who are so beguilingly independent and amazing that everyone falls in love with them; and so much slow burn that you don’t know if they will ever find their way into each other (wink wink!). Seriously, Sorensen knows exactly how to craft a slow burn which doesn’t lead you to want to send her DMs, cursing her for keeping her MMC and FMC apart. Instead, she inches them closer at a pace that feels organic to her characters’ story. At least, that’s my impression, although 73% for a first touch was eye-opening.

What I loved the most about The Best of All (and having fallen deep for the predecessor book to this one, The Best Laid Plans – I loved this book more) is Liam. Oh how I loved Liam. He’s so emotionally buttoned up, denying himself of his heart’s desire for much of the book that you cannot help but fall in love with him because he is protective and intentional even when it’s misguided. Through Liam, Sorensen showcases the power of therapy to find the words for feelings. His journey is the foundation of this book even though Zoe has her own important Zoe. For me, though, what drew me to him a bit more over Zoe is the way he loves her to his bones. He hides it behind acrimony and derision, but it’s all an act meant to turn her away. I have found that this brand of MMC is my favorite by far. My therapist had a bit to say about the reasons for this, but we agreed that, in fiction, MMCs such as Liam make for swoon-worthy romances. And that is definitely the case.

Once again, Karla Sorensen showcases her ability and passion for writing romance in The Best of All. I loved every page of this book, and it’s been one of my fastest reads in recent months. The ending felt poetic and beautiful, and it receives the highest marks from this reader.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: Max Monroe’s What I Should’ve Said ✍🏻

Overall Grade: B-

Tropes: runaway bride; single dad; small town romance; hate to love; enemies to lovers; grumpy/sunshine; “I’ll kill anyone who hurts this woman”

Let me begin with this: I adore Max Monroe. From my head to my toes, I have loved their stories. I have felt, however, that some of their humor had become a bit staid. It didn’t have the same punch as their earlier billionaires’ books, and I was excited by how they talked about What I Should’ve Said, their newest book. This is a single dad, runaway bride, small-town romance at its most basic level, but they (they being Max Monroe) are right: it is something they haven’t written in a while. I’m an unusual Max Monroe reader because my favorite Max Monroe book is The Girl in the Painting. It’s unlike much of their book list, and something about it grabbed me. It’s hung onto my soul even though it’s been a couple of years since its release. For me, What I Should’ve Said feels shaded in the same feelings as The Girl in the Painting, which made me think I would love this story beyond measure. While I was caught in the thrall of Norah and Bennett and felt the tense emotion of this story, I struggled with this story. Not because I needed it to have the humor of the billionaires or the Winslow brothers or the funny stories series. One part of this book was developed in a way that caused one of the most important parts of the book, the chemistry and relational development of the couple, to be underdeveloped. The plotting and development of the story were uneven, ticking me off. Why? Because Max Monroe have found another place to inhabit in romancelandia, and I love it when authors try something new.

I can’t divulge details even though I’m sure the emotional gravitas of this story has been revealed elsewhere. However, I can speak to Norah and Bennett’s story. You see, their initial hate-to-love was developed well and intentionally. It made sense that Bennett would be annoyed with Norah; she represents aspects of his past. And his present is taken up with his daughter. The more Max Monroe had them cross paths and fight their attraction, the more I was enticed into the story. When Norah meets and falls in love with Bennett’s daughter, Summer, the story becomes more complicated, and I was curious how they’d bring Bennett and Norah together because it seemed so complicated. Except in dealing with Summer’s emotional storyline, they gave up the tension between Bennett and Norah. They attempt to resurrect it later in the story, but by then, the ship has sailed, and it reads as more manipulative of the readers’ emotions than congruent with the story. And it saddened me.

There is a depth of emotion in What I Should’ve Said that is striking and looks good on Max Monroe. I want more of these stories. I think the stories can be balanced, and this one got away from them given the plot line regarding Summer. The ending of this book is absolutely beautiful, and you will end it feeling bittersweet, a great emotion to feel at the end of a book. There is much more to cull from this small-town world, and I am ready to see where Max Monroe takes us.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 One of the queens of sweet & spicy small-town romance has a new book coming, March 18th. Check out the smexy cover for This Much is True, the next book in Adriana Locke’s Marshall Family series. ✍🏻

When celebrity Laina Kelley bolted from her small hometown church on her wedding day, she ran to the first place that came to mind—to the home of the local farrier, a gorgeous playboy who just so happens to be her first love … and biggest frenemy.

Adriana Locke has revealed the gorgeous cover for This Much Is True!

Releasing: March 18, 2024

Cover Designer: Kari March Designs

Photographer: Wander Aguiar

USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke delivers a new “sweet and spicy!” standalone romance about a runaway bride who finds herself in the arms, and horse barn, of her deliciously handsome frenemy—who just so happens to be her first love.

This isn’t your average romance. It begins with me in a wedding dress, just not at an altar …

I never expected to be a runaway bride. I also never thought I’d end up on my ex’s doorstep to flee from said wedding. Now that I’m here, it’s easy to find the key in an old boot by the door and let myself inside. It’s not breaking and entering if I have a key, right?

It’s safe to say that Luke Marshall didn’t expect to find me on his couch in my wedding dress, my veil over my face in tears. He has no choice but to listen to my panic-induced plea for salvation. It’s only a matter of time before the tabloids get wind of my disappearing act, and my life is over.

Luke takes pity on me and says I can stay… on one condition.

I can’t sing for my supper—I have to earn it. I have to work in the barn alongside him, up to my elbows in horse manure. Oh—and because there’s only one bed, I get the couch.

This works … in theory. However, when sparks start flying, and the small-town farrier asks me to stay, I’ll have to decide between my life as a pop star or a second chance with my first love.
