Wolf Wayburn is the devil in an Armani suit with the body of a Greek god. He thinks I’m just a small-town girl who he can intimidate—but I never back down from a fight.
The first time we met, he cut me off at a gas station.
So, I flashed him the bird and mocked his family jewels.
The second time we met, he tried to get me fired.
He took his shot—and he missed.
At least for now.
Wolf Wayburn was an ex-Navy SEAL with an attitude.
But it would take a lot more than the big, bad Wolf to scare me off.
I had ninety days to win the man over.
To convince him that I was the right person for the job.
But spending endless amounts of time with him proved more challenging than I’d expected.
He was stubborn and broody and charming and sexy—all at the same time.
I despised him as much as I craved him.
We taunted and teased and terrorized one another for weeks.
The first time he dropped to his knees, it was to search me for a weapon.
The second time… it was an altogether different story.
I never planned to fall for the enemy.
Because I knew it was easier to hate Wolf Wayburn than to love him.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Ilsa Madden-Mills’s Princess and the Player ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Tropes: one night stand; surprise baby; neighbors to lovers; sports romance; angsty romance
“‘We all have darkness. People you see on the street, people you work with, people you love, people you hate. If there’s no darkness, then there’s no room for light. And when that darkness hits you, and it will, all that matters is that you keep going, one step at a time until you’re up and back on your journey.”
It’s been over a week, and I’m still thinking about Ilsa Madden-Mills’s Princess and the Player. I’m not certain what type of voodoo IMM conjures because every book I’ve ever read of hers has hit me in the solar plexus. She lays her stories in a bed of humor, crafting the initial chemistry of her characters that is instantaneous and combustible. It’s often littered with moments of spice and moments of chuckles. And this book has a smattering of the latter and a heap of the former. But what it really has is some soul-defining angst in it. I was thinking back over IMM’s books as a way to compare Princess…, and I think its angst level compares to her books such as Spider (my favorite), Dear Ava, etc. IMM intends to punch you in the gut, and it will do her readers well to have a box of tissues close as her hero, Tuck, and her heroine, Francesca, fall deeply in love with each other, while working through their own issues. Princess and the Player is a heart-rending composite of two people, broken down by their life choices, who find hope and light in each other, to their surprise.
Both Francesca and Tuck have been wounded by the people in their past. They are two sides of the same coin: different past circumstances, the same healed wounds. Thankfully, they have friends in the form of found families to help them through their difficulties. For Tuck, it’s Jasper; and for Francesca, it’s her roommates, Cece and Brogan. These characters, their friends, act as their guides, granting wisdom and protection as Tuck and Francesca work to become vulnerable with each other. While these two fall quickly into their physical pairing, it’s their emotional journey that acts as a slow burn. Their ability to become vulnerable with each other is the tension of this story. Both have been hurt, and they’ve built solid walls to protect their hearts. For me, their development to trust in each other is the driving force of their story. Honestly, Francesca is a hold-out, failing to reveal her biggest secret until almost the end, and it’s one of the main reasons you turn the page. IMM showcases her storytelling prowess as Tuck and Francesca unearth each other’s secrets like one would peel layers off an onion. And just like you do with an onion, each layer incites tears. The emotional gravitas of Tuck and Francesca’s story is deep and long and the best part of this book, in my opinion.
I’m not certain how Ilsa Madden-Mills weaves together her characters to make them so likable when you want to be angry at them. But she does this over and over and over again. It’s astounding how much I love her stories. She infuses life truths into her romances that resemble the experiences of her readers, so you “see” yourself represented in her characters even when they are professional football players or artists. There is something very special about Tuck and Francesca, and you will swoon while reading their epilogue because you simply can’t help it.
Princess and the Player is an absolute must read.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: CD Reiss’s Break Me, the final book of the Manhattan Mafia trilogy ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️
Tropes: arranged marriage; kidnapped bride; mafia romance; innocent heroine; anti-hero
Break Me, the final book of her Manhattan Mafia trilogy, has finally seen the light of day, and it is a blockbuster ending to this trilogy. Leaning into her strengths, Break Me is everything you expect of Reiss; non-stop action; spice to the nth degree; and a happy ending for her sordid characters that reminds you of the redeemability of even the darkest of characters.
Break Me picks up where the cliffhanger of Make Me left off. Dario is in a problematic situation, and Sarah is intent on saving the day. This is what I love about CD Reiss and her version of mafia romance. The strongest character of her stories is usually the heroine. Reiss takes the misogyny of mafia romances and interrogates it before upending it through grafting power into her female characters, namely Sarah in this story. She crafts a spectrum of characters from the sheep of these worlds to the ones who abuse power and need threshing. She wraps a story such as Break Me in a fabrication. You believe it’s all about the spice and action when, in reality, she’s seeking to break the molds of the genres for which she writes. It’s why I’ll continue to read her stories because Reiss gifts you with the challenge: to see more than the norm for romance.
Break Me wraps up the Manhattan Mafia trilogy well, and it promises more mafia romance from her. At the heart of her romances, there is always a consideration: ignorance keeps people trapped, so how do we move beyond our ignorance to enlightenment? I wouldn’t miss CD Reiss’s stories for anything. And quite frankly, you shouldn’t either.

An enemies-to-lovers, small town romance from @catherinecowlesauthor
Be brave. Just for sixty seconds. Twenty breaths.
It took every ounce of my courage to return to the small town I fled all those years ago. But I should’ve known he’d hate me. How could he not when my father’s blood still runs through my veins?
Yet here I am, desperate for a chance to make things right. Even if it means facing the family my father almost destroyed and the boy with the dark eyes—now grown—who still haunts my dreams.
I never expected just how explosive things would turn between us. He’s the last person I should want. Yet, somehow, I keep drawing closer—so close I know I’ll end up burned.
But Hayes is a good man, a noble one. Someone who channeled his pain into a career spent protecting those around him. So, when the threats begin, he steps in to keep me safe. And we discover that maybe neither of us knew the other at all.
As the sparks between us ignite into something deeper, someone watches. And they’ll do anything to tear it all apart…

When I walk across the gym to the heavy bags, I see the long dark, sleek hair I’ve come to associate with Willow Bernard. She’s pulling it up off her neck and tying it into a high ponytail, making my fingers tingle.
Would the strands be as soft as they look?
Clearing my throat, I get her attention in the mirror and give her a nod. “Ready to kick some ass?”
Her eyes stay on mine for a long moment and I swear there’s something that passes between us. And not for the first time, I wonder if she’s thought about me as much as I’ve thought about her over the past few days.
Shit, last night when I walked her downstairs, I’d fought the instinct to ask her to call me when she got home so I’d know she made it safely. Which, again, is ridiculous.
“Can I ask you something?” she says, turning around to face me, her expression unreadable.
Nodding again, I grab a set of gloves and some tape and walk toward her. “You can ask me anything.” I mean it. Unlike her, I’d give her any information she wants.
I’m a goddamn open book.
I just wish I could say the same for her, but even her off-handed comments give me whiplash.
First, she told me yesterday at the Piggly Wiggly that she was around a lot of kids growing up. So, I assumed she’s part of a large family, like ours.
But then yesterday evening, when Gunnar asked about her family, she said it was just her and her mom, which made it sound like she’s an only child.
The mystery surrounding Willow Bernard keeps building.
“Do you really think I’m any good at this?”
Picking my head up, I realize how close we are—so close I can see that her brown eyes are flecked with green—and also how serious she is.
And she has really long, dark lashes.
“You’re really fucking good,” I mutter as I begin to wrap tape around her wrists.
I can see the skepticism written all over her face. “You don’t believe me.”
Shaking her head slightly, she meets my gaze again. “I’ve never been good at anything.”
The thick veil that’s always shrouding Willow lifts momentarily and I see past the hard façade. Under her hard-as-nails exterior is a girl who’s unsure of herself and looking for approval, whether she wants to admit it or not.
As a trainer, it’s my job to see those types of things and look deeper than surface level, seeking out my clients’ strengths and weaknesses.Willow’s strengths are obvious. Her natural talent and drive are hard to miss. Shit, anyone could see it. Even if they didn’t know what they were looking for, they’d see her and think, this girl’s got something special.

“Hey, Barrett!” Clara shouted, wrenching me out of the storm cloud of bad memories and useless speculation I was about to get lost in.
“Barrett!” the boys shouted. “Play with us!”
I spun on my heel then checked my watch. He was early; he’d only been gone about fifteen minutes. “What’s wrong? Did something happen to you?” I asked without thinking, then froze. Damn it.
His dark eyes met mine and he grinned knowingly. “I got a cramp in my side.” He inhaled a deep sigh, his broad chest expanded on the intake, and it was all I could do not to gawk at him—muscles . . . so many muscles. He addressed the boys. “I’ll join you next time. I kinda hurt myself tonight.”
I could see his abs through his shirt, for the love of heck—but I managed to force my eyes into submission and snapped them back to his. “Oh, that’s too bad,” I breathed, at a loss for words.
“Yeah, I like to get at least thirty minutes in.” He raised his hands over his head in a stretch. I almost died at the sight of the strong corded muscles of his neck as he tipped his head back. And that jawline? It was absolute perfection, sharply defined and covered with the perfect amount of dark stubble, exactly how I liked it.
My eyes, of their own accord, drifted lower as his shirt lifted ever so slightly baring a sliver of his defined stomach. Then it became a battle between my eyeballs and my brain. I needed to avert the traitorous orbs but before I could, I caught a glimpse of the happy trail leading down to the bulgy good stuff.
I inhaled my own deep breath as I gave up and allowed my gaze to go on a journey over his hot-as-hell form. Six-foot-four inches of Barrett Monroe were taking my eyes on a trip, and I was in danger of embarrassing myself at the sight.
“Boys, bath time. Come on inside.” Clara took the ball from Flynn, tossed it to me, then led the boys inside the house.
“What—?” She couldn’t have planned Barrett’s side cramp. But she sure as heck planned the rest, leaving me out here alone with him like this. I scowled and clutched the ball to my chest instead of hurling it at her retreating back. I glanced sheepishly back at Barrett.
His grin had softened to a small smile. “I’m going to say this again, and hopefully it will come out better than that first Monday morning here in the driveway. You look different.”
“Yeah? Well, I don’t wear heels and makeup at home, Barrett. I’m a freelance hot mom and I make my own hours.” I couldn’t help but crack a defensive joke as I grumbled and adjusted my ponytail with one hand. “I don’t have time to get dolled up every time I go outside—”
“It wasn’t an insult, Sadie. You’re adorable right now, stunning in an entirely different way.” His eyes softened on mine, just like his smile had.
I found myself fighting a big dopey grin that was threatening to pop out and give my crush away. “Oh. Okay then. Well, thank you.” Unfortunately, I couldn’t control the red flush that rose over my cheeks or his knowing reaction to it.
He backed up a few steps, gesturing to the ball. “I’m feeling better. Show me what you got, stunner.”
“Stunner?” I allowed a small smile to cross my face. It was a non-flirty, totally neutral smile. Yeah, you keep telling yourself that, dummy.
His lips quirked sideways in a grin as he nodded. “Every time I get to see a different side of you, it stuns me.” He gestured to his heart and made the cutest mock-surprised face I’d ever seen in my life.
Instead of keeling over dead from being stunned myself and the resulting sudden heart palpitations, I spun the ball on my finger, let it go, then kicked it to him. He passed it back with a knee and my small smile turned huge. Barrett had skills too.
