✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Kylie Scott’s Pause ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Let me begin with the fact that I am intrigued by Kylie Scott’s writing. There is an understated quality to it that drags you into her stories. Case in point: Pause, her newest book. To be fair, I’m a relative newbie to her booklist. I’ve read a few of her stories: The Rich Boy and Love Under Quarantine. I found myself transfixed by the level of story in these books, and I know…I know that these aren’t even her best ones. There is still so much to read ahead of me as I fall down the rabbit hole of her booklist. That being said, at the end of Pause, I finished and found myself heavily pondering it. Let’s talk about why.

  1. This is NOT a dual point of view. It’s entirely the point of view of her heroine, Anna. Usually, I prefer a dual point-of-view story, but this choice works for Pause. Even though there is a part of me who would love inside Leif’s mind, Scott is careful in constructing him through Anna’s point of view that we get some sense of his interest in Anna.
  2. All of the worst that can happen to a heroine or hero is in this story. Before Anna can find her happy ending, she must traverse a field of emotional landmines to get there, but the way that Scott builds tenacity in her makes you fall in love with her character.
  3. Remember, everything you know about this story comes from Anna’s point of view, and again, she’s a bada$$ heroine who has been constructed through the fires of trauma. However, while it’s easy to love Leif, as he is THE most supportive person for Anna, we cannot fully know Leif because he’s constructed through her point of view. This makes you constantly off-kilter because it’s difficult to anticipate his response to her. I love that, though, because it builds anticipation in Pause. Kylie Scott keeps you sitting at the edge of your seat as you wonder if Leif and Anna will traverse the friends’ landscape into becoming lovers. And that anticipation built through potentially misinterpreting Leif’s words and gestures is the impetus for you turning the page.
  4. There is so much understatement in this story that it feels almost niche in its expression. Even the epilogue with a sweeping grand gesture feels like an everyday occurrence for Leif and Anna, and it reads kind of weird (for lack of a better way to put it), but I found myself beguiled by its understatement because romance can be so EXTRA sometimes.

There is just something special about Leif and Anna in Kyle Scott’s Pause. Honestly, I’d love to see more of their story elsewhere because they felt like real people living out real-life traumas. This is a must-read in my opinion. If you haven’t yet downloaded Pause, then grab it quick.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Vi Keeland’s The Spark ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

You have to be forewarned when you enter a Vi Keeland tome. To be honest, there is a bit of a bait and switch involved with most of her books. As you begin her stories, you enter them, in my opinion, with some lightness. Whether it’s a hero and heroine who detest each other and their meet-cute involves fireworks, or there is some situation that pulls them together, their beginning is generally couched in ease. You find out about midway through her books that there is something deeper, graver afoot. And it’s that moment when the switch happens when you fall head over heels in love with her stories. At least that’s the case with this reader.

The Spark, Vi Keeland’s newest story, begins with a seemingly innocuous meet-cute. The heroine, Autumn, accidentally takes the luggage of one Donovan Decker. On calling his number, found on his luggage tag, they make plans to meet at a coffee shop to exchange luggage (he notes a lonely piece of luggage and takes it, thinking it might belong to the person who took his). On meeting, there is an instant attraction, and they spend a weekend together, which ends with Autumn sneaking away and out of Donovan’s life. Until she comes back in.

Again, at first glance, The Spark seems harmless, nothing to wrench your heart in two. Except that Keeland’s genius is her ability to connect her easy story to darker human issues. This book handles the struggles of the foster system, the horror of dating abuse, and the psychology of trauma as it upends a person’s life. At Autumn and Donovan’s meet-cute, these deeper issues are nowhere to be found, but without them, this book would miss. Under Keeland’s deft hand, The Spark becomes a story about love healing the hurts of the past, about the need to move on. It’s a story beautifully wrought, engaging, and heartrending. It’s a reminder of the best parts of romances that take something ugly and turn that ugly into a scarred, but complete beauty. All of that is here in Vi Keeland’s The Spark. Unlike some of her stories, her hero, Donovan, is lost to Autumn. The holdout in this story is its heroine. Yet, Donovan shows his mettle, and he is impervious to failure. He loves her without restraint, and as a reader, you can’t help but fall for him.

From its start to its finish, Vi Keeland’s The Spark is a tapestry of the highs and lows of love. As she has done in the past, Keeland has crafted a story that grabs at you, pulling you through to her end. Once you begin reading this one, you will not be able to put it down. And Donovan and Autumn will steal your heart.

✍🏻 Are you ready for Logan Tate? Kendall Ryan’s The Rookie is coming July 20th. You can preorder your copy TODAY! ✍🏻

Title: The Rookie

Series: Looking to Score

By Kendall Ryan

Release Day: July 20, 2021

About the Book

He has everything a man could want. A lucrative hockey contract. Adoring fans. A family who loves him.

But he’s about to throw it all away. Logan Tate’s name is dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons. Instead of goals and assists, the talented young defenseman has been racking up fights and suspensions.

I work with athletes who are struggling, but Logan’s different. He’s not just going to blow his season, but his entire career. And now he can’t return to the ice until he deals with his issues, but the stubborn man won’t let anyone get close enough to help.

Which is why I packed up and followed him to his family’s property in the remote mountains of Colorado. He can’t avoid me here.

The only problem?

I can’t avoid him either. He’s chopping wood and building fires, rescuing my car from snowy ditches, and inviting me to Sunday dinners with his loud extended family. He’s a whole lot of man, but beneath all those hard edges is an unexpected tenderness.

Tempted or not, I have to stay out of his bed and get him back to the ice . . . no matter how difficult that might be.

Before I even met Donovan Decker, I knew his shoe size.
You see, I’d gone away for a few days, and in my haste to get out of the airport, I’d grabbed the wrong suitcase.
After checking out the expensive footwear and tailored clothes, I dialed the number on the luggage tag hoping maybe Mister Big Spender might have my bag.
A deep, velvety voice answered, and as luck would have it, he had my suitcase, too.
Donovan and I met at a coffee shop to do the exchange.
Turned out, it wasn’t just his voice that was sexy. The man holding my luggage was absolutely gorgeous, and we had an immediate spark.
He got me to admit that I’d snooped in his bag and then convinced me to make it up to him by letting him buy me coffee.
Coffee led to dinner, dinner led to dessert, and dessert led to spending an entire weekend together. Donovan wasn’t just handsome with a panty-dropping voice. He was also funny, smart, and surprisingly down to earth for a man who wore seven-hundred-dollar shoes.
Did I mention he also did my laundry while I slept?
Definitely too good to be true.
So what did I do to repay him for his kindness?
I waited until he was in the shower, then ghosted him.
My life was too complicated for such a great guy.
In the months that passed, I thought about Donovan often. But New York City had eight-million people, so what were the chances I’d run into him?
Then again, what were the chances I’d run into him a year later…when I’d just started dating his boss?

✍🏻 Brittainy Cherry’s emotional, heart wrenching story is out now. If you haven’t read The Mixtape yet, what are you waiting for? Check out this author feature and excerpt before you grab your copy of this beautiful book. ✍🏻

Author Brittainy Cherry Writes Her Own Mixtape

Hi, Everyone! I’m Brittainy Cherry, author of The Mixtape, a contemporary romance novel. I am so excited to share Oliver and Emery’s story with you all. These two characters are both struggling through life in their own ways, and it is through music and love that they find their way back to themselves and each other.

The Mixtape could’ve never come together without my own mixtape of sorts to help guide the way to this novel. Music not only plays a huge role in the story, but also in my personal life, so of course I had to whip up my own mixtape as I wrote this story. For example, my playlist began with “Godspeed” by the extremely talented James Blake that set the mood of the story. His tones and lyrics wrapped me up into a warm hug and I allowed the song to move me as I crafted Oliver’s character.

Then, we moved into “Soldiers” by Rachel Platten which is a powerful song about taking moments to breathe in order to move forward for another day, like soldiers in the night. It’s a song that showcases the strength of our heroine, Emery, who is a single mother, trying her best to create a better life for her young daughter.

I had the best time tying in songs like “Slow Dance” by AJ Mitchell (feat. Ava Max) to show the slow burn between Emery and Oliver falling together, followed by their first kiss being written to the song, “Can I Kiss You?” by Dahl.

The whole story was wrapped up with a classic, “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” by the Spinners, which sums up what I hope you experience reading this novel: a mixtape of emotions which lead to you falling in love with the love story of Emery and Oliver. I hope this novel heals you the same way music soothes my soul.

The Mixtape Excerpt

Sometimes the world didn’t make sense. No parent should’ve ever had to bury their own child. I couldn’t even imagine that kind of pain that raced through her heartbeats on a daily basis. If I could offer up only one set of prayers for the remainder of my life, it would be for the parents who had to say goodbye too early on to their own.

Those hearts would always beat a little slower in my mind.

“I’m so sorry, Michelle.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached out and patted my hand, and I knew it was because she needed a hand to hold. So, I wrapped both of mine around hers. “The mourning doesn’t get easier. It just get quieter. Some days, I still cannot get out of bed, but I’m blessed. Because Richard stays in bed with me and my quietness. Then, when it’s time for me to get up, he pulls me to my feet, and we dance. A piece of advice—find yourself a man who would dance with you even when your heart is broken.” Her eyes flashed with tears and she held my hands tighter. “You want to know a secret?”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was going to lose Oliver, too. He kept everyone so far away. So, when I flew out here, I prepared myself for the worst. I thought he’d be in a drunken slumber or, worse…so much worse. Last time I came a few weeks ago, he wasn’t doing too well. But this time? This time I came back and he’s smiling.”

“That’s so good.”

She smiled brightly up at me as tears freely danced down her cheekbones. “So thank you.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I swore.

“You’re the only difference in his life since I came back. Plus, there’s the way he looks at you when you’re not looking. Now, sweetheart, I don’t know what you did, but I’m almost positive that you helped bring my son back to life after he was holding death’s hand. Call it my mother’s intuition. So, thank you for helping him. Even if it’s just by being his friend.”

Now I was tearing up, and I pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re an amazing mother,” I whispered, and she began to cry harder.

“You have no clue how hard it is to believe that each day.”

I think all mothers thought that. The ones who doubted her mothering skills, were sometimes the ones who were trying their best day in and day out. I didn’t expect the conversation with Michelle to go the direction that it had, but I was glad it had taken that path, because it was clear we both had some healing corners of our heart that had to be touched that evening.

“Oh, don’t tell me you two are wine drunk and emotion,” Richard cut in, walking in our direction. “We were just picking out a song for two seconds and we turn around to find you both moping.”

“Oh hush, Richard. Can’t us girls have a moment every now and again?” Michelle remarked, standing to her feet.

“Yes, but for now, we dance to The Spinners, my lady.” Richard reached out for his wife and took her into his arms as they began swaying to the song, Could It Be I’m Falling In Love. Richard serenaded Michelle as she smiled and melted into him like a perfectly fit puzzle piece.

Oliver came to stand beside me as we both watched his parents fall more and more in love with one another.

“This was their wedding song,” Oliver mentioned. “Dad recorded it, and they danced to it for their first dance.”

“Oh my gosh, how sweet is that,” I swooned. True romance.

“They dance to it every single night. On the good days and bad days. Especially on the bad days.”

“They’re what I want my love to look like,” I confessed. Oliver gave me a tight smile but didn’t say anything. I shifted around for a minute before looking toward him once more. “Do you want to dance with me?”

Summary

Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them—no support system—any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.

Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.

He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. ✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Kristen Ashley’s After the Climb ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

I have been in a serious Kristen Ashley binge-read/listen as of late. As her books come on sale, I gobble them up, and I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m drawn to her because she has her own style in the world of romance. When I think about her stories, I think about her depth of storytelling. She gives her readers everything about her characters, and her epilogues, for example, go on forever, which is FANTASTIC because you HATE leaving her characters. She draws these characters that feel fictional and real in equal measure. She’s crafted heroes who are incredibly masculine yet have a sensitivity for their heroines. She’s created heroines who stand in their independence even when their lives are falling apart. Once the hero and heroine begin falling for each other, it’s over. That’s it. They will be together until the end. Ashley will keep you engaged in her story through the twists and turns of the story, but the foundational piece of her stories is her couples’ undying love for each other. And she has a capacity for creating ancillary characters who REQUIRE their own stories. She draws readers into later books by giving you a taste at the end of the story you’ve just finished. Now, I’ve seen some reviewers who say, “it’s all the same over and over again.” However, there is a comfort in the way that Kristen Ashley builds her stories and their series. I trust that I will get a depth of storytelling from Ashley that will keep me engaged in her book over and over again, and I love that.

I missed After the Climb over the pandemic. I found Kristen Ashley late, so to get a copy of this book, I didn’t know what to expect. What I found is more of Ashley’s world-building. I finished After the Climb ready for more stories because this book has set the tone for the rest of the series.

I love this book. I predict Genny/Gen/Imogen and Duncan/Dun/Bowie will be a beloved couple in Ashley’s world of romance, This is a second chance romance. They are not young, yet they are not old in number. The way that these two come together and reconcile is sweet.

It’s so hard to write this review because there was so much I loved about After the Climb. For one, there are several points of view in this story. I think the foundational voice of this series will be Corey’s the other best friend to Genny and Duncan. I want to see where Kristen Ashley takes this because I found it interesting that, through his perspective, his choices make sense. It takes much of the book to realize that. Ashley makes you wait for this.

Secondly, the combined families of Genny and Duncan are adorable. Like seriously. I need stories for Sully, Gage, Chloe (it’s coming in Chasing Serenity), Sasha, and Corey’s son, Hale. I think it might be nice to have a story for Tom, Genny’s ex, but I could live without it to be honest. But see what she does…see how she invests you in her characters because she makes them feel like friends or relatives. You become rabid for their journey and their happy ending. Her ability to craft characters that are likable and interesting is Ashley’s superpower.

Here’s the thing. I didn’t want to put this story down. I don’t care what anyone says because there is something interesting about this new series. Add in Hollywood and Phoneix and Duncan’s connection to the environment, and you find a story in After the Climb that has just touched a small portion of the mountain of series yet to come.

If you’re a Kristen Ashley fan, then you need to read this book. I’m pretty sure I’m the last one to the table, though. I can’t wait for the next story in this series.

In love and romance,

Professor A
