Strength.
That single word is what I’ve relied on now more than ever. Strength keeps me going. Strength makes me get up every day.
Even with the pain.
It was my dad’s job. He was the founder and CEO of the best tech company. But with his death, it’s now mine. And I’m damn good at it.
Until the threats start.
With Cat’s urging, I hire Jackson’s company to protect me and find the guy responsible. I didn’t expect my bodyguard to look that good. His body was a dream, his face was perfection, and his dark eyes drew me in. Too bad he carried a past that tarnished his present.
Because Luka Sarbent has the potential for love.
But when the threats start to get more perilous, his heart hardens.
I trust him to keep me safe from the dangers thrown at me, but I don’t trust him with my heart. Ironic really … because I’ve never felt more guarded …

The night I walked into that seedy bar, I only had one thing on my mind.
Get the job done fast so that I can go home to my daughter.
Until I saw him.
Max Arden.
Tall, dark, and tortured.
My life is already a mess and the last thing I should be doing is inviting more trouble in.
Trouble that a man like him would undoubtedly bring.
Especially when I have a daughter to protect and I’m all she has.
But it doesn’t matter how hard I fight it; fate has other ideas for us.
When my past threatens to clash with my present, it’s Max that is there to protect me.
I was supposed to be the one to trap him, but in the end, it was me who ended up caught.

It wasn’t love at first sight. That would be too easy.
I can tell you all the reasons Paige and I shouldn’t be together.
But love overlooks a lot.
My heart doesn’t care that I’m ten years older.
There’s no age gap in how she makes me feel.
My heart doesn’t care that she’s a single mother.
It just makes more room.
My heart doesn’t care that she’s got secrets of her own.
It’s used to keeping mine.
The moment I laid eyes on Paige, I lost control.
Control of my desires. Control of my secrets. Control of my heart.
Right or wrong, we’re going to have to fight for our happily ever after.
And I don’t plan on losing.

I was introduced to Andi Burns through Sarina Bowen’s World of True North stories. Something about her book, Goalkeeper, drew me to the first book of her new Bainbridge University series, Uncovered. But here’s the thing. I also love me a New Adult romance with male characters who are seemingly self-possessed when they are actually a little broken. On reading the blurb for Uncovered, I was intrigued. The hero’s family is responsible for something propagated on the heroine’s family. What’s not to love about star-crossed lovers…or the suggestion of it? Once you enter Uncovered and read it from cover to final page, you realize that Andi Burns’s story is a story about the consequences of trauma and the impact of a “found family” on living after it.
There is a suggestion in Uncovered that the four guys of The Chapel are insulated and trouble. And there is some truth to it in that Ty, Knox, Booker, and Whit are incredibly insulated, having created their own family after their birth families have proven horrible. One of the highlights of Uncovered is the connection between these four guys as they support each other even through their difficult moments. They are guides, protectors, and cajolers for each other. Their connection is the foundation of Burns’s Bainbridge University series with each guy earning his own book.
Consider Uncovered their initiation as Burns uses it to introduce us to each of them while focusing the most on Ty and his relationship with Phoebe. I’d prefer to avoid telling you the details of their situation as the complications of their relationship are hinted to in the blurb. The profundity of the evolution of their relationship lies in her characterization of Ty. Ty, while seemingly a playboy, is incredibly devoted to Phoebe. With that dedication comes a faith in their relationship, even though it is fraught from the beginning, given their connect past. This creates a ticking time bomb of a plot device, as you wait for their world to implode. And this, my friends, is what turns the pages of Burns’s Uncovered. It’s like the accident on the side of the highway: you look when you don’t want to look because the gory details titillate. Burns doesn’t disappoint with her implosion of Ty and Phoebe’s burgeoning relationship.
And there is trauma all over this book. Thankfully, Burns ameliorates it through Phoebe’s roommate, Mia, and their friend, Ian. They are her wizened guides on her journey towards healing. Even more, Burns doesn’t quickly swipe Phoebe’s issues under the rug. At various times in the story, they erupt causing issues. Each time this occurs, Burns provides a different response to it, suggesting that trauma is overcome through the assistance of different resources. It feels essential that Phoebe would have these struggles in the context of Burn’s story in Uncovered. That she didn’t back away from developing it shows her tenacity in telling the best story.
Now, there are moments in the chronology of the story that are questionable, and moments of the story that don’t feel necessary. However, Andi Burns’s Uncovered is a great start for this new series. I know that, given the epilogue of this book, I can’t wait for Knox’s story in the next book of the series.

Amends…they’re not mine to make, but I’ve been haunted by the memory of a shattered girl in that courtroom two years ago.
So, I tell myself I’m doing what’s right. I’ll stay in the shadows, out of her way. She won’t know I’m there–she doesn’t even know who I am. I’m just setting it up and walking away with as clear a conscience as my guilt will allow me.
But then she needs a tutor. And I’m the only one working. How can I say no?
But one coincidental meeting turns into two, and then three. And before I can stop myself, I’m falling hard for a woman I have no business wanting. The problem is, she’s falling hard for me, too.
I need to tell her who I am–I have to. But I know that the moment I do, I’ll break her. And she’ll break me, too.
Uncovered is a full-length novel with a tortured hero, a broken heroine, and an HEA. It is the first STANDALONE in the Bainbridge University Series.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

I can’t have Elijah Iverson.
I can’t have him because he’s my older brother’s best friend. I can’t have him because I broke his heart five years ago; because he’s now engaged to someone else—someone kind and dependable who deserves his whiskey eyes, his soft mouth, his fierce intellect.
I can’t have Elijah because I’ve chosen God instead.
The Bell brothers, though . . . well, we don’t exactly have the greatest track record with vows. But I’m determined to do this monk thing right—to pledge myself to a cloistered life and spend the rest of my years in chastity and prayer. But now Elijah’s here. He’s here and he’s coming with me on my European monastery road trip, and between the whispered confessions and the stolen kisses and the moments bent over an ancient altar, my vows are feeling flimsier by the day.
And vows or not, I know in my heart that it would take more than a good and holy monk to resist Elijah Iverson right now. It would take a saint.
And we all know that I’m no saint.
(This is the third full-length standalone in the Priest Collection, featuring Father Bell’s brother, Aiden Bell. You do not have to read Priest or Sinner to read Saint.)

“I couldn’t think of anything I wanted more in the world than to be with someone who made me more me, or thought I made him more him.”
At its core, what is Louise Bay’s Private Player?
Romance catnip. Seriously! If you’ve read any of my reviews EVER, then you know I’m a hound for a broody, alpha-level, too sure of himself hero. And Bay’s hero in her newest book, Nathan, is all of those things.
His meet-cute happens with his heroine, Madison, at their mutual friends’ wedding (International Player’s Truly and Noah). From the moment Madison and Nathan meet, it’s a mix of palatable attraction, tequila, and a wardrobe malfunction courtesy of a chair where the heroine flashes her pink panties at, at the very least, her tablemates.
Madison and Nathan hit it off so well that they spend a steamy one night together, knowing they will never see each other again. Except…
This is romance, and that never happens for a hero and heroine. You see, Madison is a burgeoning reporter for The Post, and well, our hero, Nathan, has an image problem. He’s been spotted with his best friend’s wife, and the preeminent gossip columnist who wrote about him has skewered him. With that in mind, his PR team finds a journalist to spend time with Nathan to get a sense of the man in order to write a piece about him, saving his reputation and his job. And guess who is assigned to him? You guessed it: Madison.
As you can imagine, Bay’s Private Player evolves into a romantic journey between two people trying to deny their growing attraction for purposes of their credibility but also Nathan’s reticence towards relationships. Is it possible for Madison and Nathan to find their happy ending? Well, this is a romance, but how they get there is always unpredictable.
There are some amazing parts of Private Player:
*Nathan’s family (who get their stories in future books)
*The interplay between Madison and Nathan especially as they fight their attraction. Talk about steam floating off the page.
*Madison’s introspection about Nathan when he’s unable to see his situation from outside of his own ambition and connection
*The way that Madison and Nathan fall incrementally in love even when they fight it
*Louise Bay’s insistence on writing heroes such as Nathan who captivate her readers and make you want more of them
*The general message to live your life on your own terms
My only criticisms of this story are its predictability (which, for me, because I adore Louise Bay, isn’t a huge issue) and the very little we get of Madison’s relationship with her mother. Bay gives us a nibble of it, but I would have liked more of it to see its impact on Madison. She tells us about it, but I would have liked a bit more of that characterization.
All of that aside, Louise Bay’s Private Player is a preeminent Bay story. It has steam, attraction, sweet moments, a worthy message, and a glorious happy ending. What else could you ask for in a romance book?

I sometimes think that Helena Hunting is several different people (NO! I’m not accusing her of ghostwriters). She has this incredible way of finding different places to write from for different works. There is a general thread of humor that runs through her books, but given the different personalities of her stories, she mutes or heightens that thread. And what you find is a deep abiding adoration for her storytelling. Whether she’s writing the stories of horny hockey players or enemies to lovers in competing businesses or a hate-to-love story between neighbors, Helena Hunting shows her ability to take you along for her romance ride no matter the story.
So let’s talk about Love Next Door, her newest story. Let’s name all the tropes you’ll find in this story: hate-to-love/enemies-to-lovers, small-town romance, on some level, and forced proximity (that one’s a stretch). Without my tropes cheatsheet in front of me, these are the ones that find immediate purchase in this book. With those key tropes as a guide, it’s interesting to note that this story is a sweet one. Even when her heroine and hero, Dillion/Darlin/Dee and Donovan/Van, are fighting, their burgeoning/evolving romance has an underpinning of sweetness to it. There is clear chemistry from the start; Hunting isn’t doing anything different with this story. In fact, I think Love Next Door exists as an ode to Hunting’s own lakeside cabin experiences and a story for her fans. Coming through the Montlake Publishing line, you’ll find this one to be the least steamy of anything she’s written as of late. There is no kink here, no overwhelming number of bedroom scenes.
What you find with Love Next Door is a treatment on a few distinct messages: don’t live life to spite your past, work a job that you love and loves you back, and family is incredibly important. Tangential to that is Hunting’s focus on mental health as well. There is some suspense in this story which is a bit predictable, but it adds some spice to the story because, from the start, it’s clear that Dillion and Van are fated. From the beginning to the end, Hunting writes all the signs in her story, even with an ending that compels you to put a smile on your face as you realize their relationship was set in the stars.
The revelation of the villain of this story aside, I adore Dillion and Van’s story in Helena Hunting’s Love Next Door. It’s the type of book that you read on the beach or in a lounge on the back patio or in bed during a lazy afternoon and evening. Will it make you laugh out loud like some of the stories of her Pucked or All In series? Not really. There is a simplicity and sweetness to this story that makes you fall in love with it. If you’re looking for the perfect read for the coming weekend, then this is your book.
