When the devil comes to town, you have to meet him head on.

Which is exactly what I did when Grant Stone rolled into our small Texas town, driving a sports car I could fit in the bed of my truck, wearing a suit as black as his soul. He’s here to acquire mineral rights to half a dozen farms in town.

So…I’m new to reading LGBTQA romances. Like, prior to this year, menage was my entre into it. With Vino & Veritas and my love of the World of True North, I wanted to dive into this genre of romance. And I haven’t looked back. I tell you all of this because you are free to call me ignorant because, given that I am a veritable novice, I’m sure the “straight” hero with the gay hero isn’t new. On entering Leslie McAdam’s Undone, I had read the blurb and I was intrigued. Would McAdam make this believable? Her dedication which serves as inspiration for Undone tickles your fancy immediately. But again, I was worried. 

My worry was unnecessary. McAdam makes it realistic and clear how someone such as Jason can fall deeply in love with his roommate, Murph. We could pretend that’s a surprise, but c’mon, this is MM romance and we believe in happy endings, so it shouldn’t be a surprise. There is so much to love about Undone. 

• For one, there is a great discussion in this book about the LGBTQA community. Murph focuses us on the spectrum of it. In fact, I thought I knew a lot about this community, and I was introduced to some new designations.  And I love when romance teaches me about our world through the scope of love and relationships. 
• Secondly, Jason’s evolution from the man in the gray suit to a world of color is such a profound metaphor for life. Using color as a way to illustrate the impact of “coming out” felt insightful and literary, and this book nerd loved it. 
• If Murph doesn’t steal your heart, then well, you’re officially heartless. No question. He is truly the color between the black and white lines of this text, and he will make you fall in love with him. 
• I was worried during the first half of Undone that Murph and Reeve’s best friendship would be diminished in this book. It was so clear in Marley Valentine’s Unforgettable, and I was concerned that Reeve would not be paying the favor in return for helping Murph through his romantic journey. Yet, I need not be worried as Reeve plays a big part in Murph’s reconciliation with Jason. He is as key to this story as Murph is to his own. 
• Jason. So darn swoony. Murph calls him his knight, and he really shows it. McAdam has drawn him so well in her characterization of him. I love his eventual calling.
• Finally, McAdam pulls many of the Vino & Veritas books together by the end of Undone. I believe this is the last one, so nodding her head to other V&V couples felt like a full-circle moment. 

I really do think Leslie McAdam’s Undone is one of the best of the bunch. It also acts as a perfect coda to the series.

I think it’s the bane of every twenty-year-old-ish person’s existence to make choices in the face of parental expectation. Marley Valentine highlights this struggle beautifully in her Vino & Veritas story, Unforgettable. Centered around Oz and Reeve, Valentine interrogates the emotional trauma wrought by parents’ hopes and dreams for their children especially when a child has  different ideas for themselves. Through the scope of Oz and Reeve’s emotional romantic journey, we come to recognize the idea that living a life on your own terms in the specter of peace and happiness is the best choice. 

Valentine’s Unforgettable has two of my favorite characters in the V&V world. Reeve and Oz meet for a one-night stand. That shouldn’t necessarily endear you to them; however, Reeve is shy and internal, and it takes Oz’s empathic nature to draw him out and give him what he needs when Reeve cannot find the words for it. Thinking they won’t see each other again (while also regretting that choice), Reeve and Oz reconnect when Reeve takes a job in the bookstore at V&V where Oz works. Then, their story starts a long emotional journey where Oz and Reeve must decide their commitment to each other. However, at every turn, their personal anxieties about living up to their parents’ wishes for their lives threaten to derail any kind of happiness for them. 

There is something special about Oz and Reeve. My biggest frustration with their story is Reeve’s reticence in committing to Oz. In fact, that plot point undermines their journey because, as the reader, you can’t help but ask “why can’t Oz leave or why can’t they have a long-distance relationship.” I’m not sure that Valentine makes a strong case against those questions. However, putting that aside, their coupling is sweet, They complement each other well, and Oz’s compassionate side causes you to fall in love with their story. There is a subtlety to their attraction and eventual love. Along with that is their steaminess. In fact, this is one of the more dirty stories, by my estimation, in the Vino & Veritas world. But you can’t help but love Oz and Reeve together. 

I also adored the inclusion of Oz’s extended family, namely his sisters. The rapport between them and Reeve makes you swoon a bit and hope for Oz and Reeve’s eventual happy ending. 

Overall, I really enjoyed Marley Valentine’s Unforgettable from Oz’s empathic self to Reeve’s silent strengths. You find yourself falling in love with their journey towards finding their happiness together.

Showstopper marries two of my favorite parts of Heart Eye Press’s World of True North: Moo U and Vino & Veritas. Regina Kyle’s romance follows Adam and Kolby, two seemingly very different heroes. Adam is a college hockey superstar who has transferred from another university due to a personal issue. While he is “out” to his closest friends and family, he isn’t really interested in being the “bisexual hockey star” so he doesn’t “announce” it to everyone, specifically his new teammates. Adam meets Kolby on one of his first days on campus when Adam needs help with changing a class at the campus registrar. From the moment they meet, there is an insta-attraction even though Kolby, who works part-time in the registrar’s office, makes assumptions about Adam while Adam is trying to avoid any kind of relationship. When Adam must stay in his scheduled Improv class, he has no idea that Kolby, a theater major, is also a student in the class. As Adam navigates this class with trepidation, he grows closer to Kolby to help him through it. When a special theatrical opportunity comes to Burlington U, the tables turn, and Kolby needs Adam’s help. The more time these two spend together, the more their attraction grows. However, people from their pasts come to potentially upend their growing happiness together and threaten Adam’s future. Will they make it to their happy ending?

There is much to adore about Regina Kyle’s Showstopper. For me, Kolby is the most interesting character in her story. A former Mormon, Kolby is living out and proud. He knows himself, and he works hard to live his life on his own terms. Imagining Kolby with the ex-Mormon background makes him layered. It’s also incredibly timely when more of this discussion is finding space on social media. His past obviously brings complications to his relationship with Adam, but it also has forged him into a resolute, insightful young man. He becomes this free-spirited guide for Adam. 

Now, that doesn’t mean I didn’t adore Adam because I did. His journey is also timely given that more and more sports players are “coming out.” We’re seeing this becoming normalized. You might expect that Adam’s $exuality is secreted to all, but it isn’t and Kyle’s pacing of Adam’s revelation of it to his team is spot-on. The consequences of it show her deft storytelling in undermining the anxiety of Adam’s “coming out.” 

And of course, the connection of Adam to past Moo U stories and Kolby’s connection to the Vino and Veritas ones add another great story to this world. From start to finish, I lost myself in their journey. By my estimation, Showstopper is another perfect addition to the World of True North.
