Excerpt:

Before she’d left, she’d tried on three outfits and given me a demonstration of how she looked standing up, walking, and sitting down in each one before I was able to give my final judgement. She looked good in all of them. But the pale blue top looked best with her skin tone, and the neckline showed off just the right amount of cleavage.

I’d suggested she wear the green.

And that bothered me the most. Why didn’t I want her to look her best for Tom? Yes, I found her attractive. Yes, my body seemed to have some kind of visceral reaction whenever she was too close. And that kiss? It had been spectacular. But none of that changed the fact I wasn’t a man who got serious with women. Hartford deserved better.

A knock at my door pulled me back out of my own head. I needed to think less. And I needed to call Kelly. I’d not seen her for a few weeks. I’d been busy and . . . I’d just not had the urge to call her.

I swung open the door to find a grinning Hartford. I’d not heard the lift.

“Do you have cake for our debrief?” she asked, grinning at me.

God, she was pretty.

“Is that what we’re doing? Debriefing? Now?”

“Of course we’re debriefing.”

That’s what I liked about Hartford. Most other women would apologize for bothering me or ask me if it was okay to stop by this late. She was unapologetically in my life, and it was refreshing.

Blurb:

I haven’t seen him in over a decade, but Joshua Luca can still get to me. And I hate it.

At twenty-nine, I’m a doctor and I’ve travelled the world, but just the thought of him has me sliding my sweaty palms down my jeans and wishing I could steady my racing heartbeat.

Joshua was an almost obsession until, at seventeen, he cost me my future. In one night, I grew up and let go of my silly crush.

My infatuation for Joshua is dead and buried. Forever.

It doesn’t matter that he’s my new flat mate.

Or that he still has that same sexy smile.

I barely notice how that, despite his billions, he’s the kindest man I know.

Or that when he touches me, a thousand tiny fireworks explode all over my body.

I’m completely over Joshua Luca.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Catherine Cowles’s Beneath the Wreckage ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

“Not even everything I wanted in a partner. He was everything I needed. And now that I knew what it felt like to be loved by him, I was ruined.”

Catherine Cowles writes epic romantic suspense stories. This author crafts stories that take you on twists and turns in both the suspense and romance genres. Her newest story, Beneath the Wreckage, is no different. Like the other stories in her Wrecked Series, her hero, Hunter, and her heroine, Piper, endure more than your average romantic couple. And Cowles uses the space of her story to remind her readers that we must heal from our past, or we will miss out on living life abundantly. As Hunter and Piper struggle to let go of past traumas, they draw closer together, threatened by outside forces.

In Beneath the Wreckage, Piper, a Seattle transplant, has purchased Whispering Falls, the campground where she and her family spent summers with her best friend and her family. Buoyed by the trauma of her friend’s disappearance years before, along with happy memories of life on the lake, Piper has taken over the foreclosed-upon property to return it to its former glory. In order to do this expeditiously, she hires Hunter, a local construction contractor. Hunter has his own fraught experience with Whispering Falls, but one look at Piper, and he decides to take the job. As Piper and Hunter work on renovating the place, their attraction becomes undeniable. Unfortunately, someone is trying to impede Piper’s progress, while also threatening her life. Beneath the Wreckage asks many questions: Do Piper and Hunter have the possibility of a happily-ever-after? Will Piper bring Whispering Falls to its former glory? Can Hunter protect Piper from the danger that lurks, or will he lose her as she lost her best friend? Even more, can Hunter and Piper move beyond their past traumas?  All of the answers to these questions provide a story that makes you gobble the pages of Beneath the Wreckage

Catherine Cowles constantly surprises me with her ability to cause me to lose myself in her stories. From the strength of characterization to her capacity to coordinate the beat points of her stories, you find yourself engulfed by her books. Between her gorgeous prose and the feelings evoked through her characters, a story such as Beneath the Wreckage both entertains and fuels your emotions. I simply couldn’t put Beneath the Wreckage down, and I suspect, you won’t be able to either.

In love and romance,

Five hockey players, a cabin in the woods . . . and little old me, Winnie Berlin.

Sounds like the start of a fantasy, right? But it’s not. It’s my reality.

It all started when I got lost in the middle of the Canadian Rockies. A wicked thunderstorm sent my car mud sliding into a ditch and for a girl whose survival skills involve finding the nearest Starbucks, I was in deep trouble.

Forced to abandon my car in search of help, I stumbled upon a cabin in the middle of nowhere. Soaking wet, irritated, and in desperate need of a hot shower, I knocked on the door for help only to be greeted by five boisterous, burly, and insanely attractive men.

Not just men.

Professional hockey players.

I hit the motherload of fantasies, right? Wrong.

Because as it turns out, one of them is my ex-boyfriend’s half-brother. And when I end up crashing in their spare bedroom for the night, things take a very unexpected turn.

I’m not sure any amount of survival skills can protect my heart from Vancouver Agitators star goalie, Pacey Lawes. But as long as we kiss and don’t tell, maybe everything will be okay . . .

–RT Reviews

When Sparks Fly, an all-new emotional and hilarious friends-to-lovers standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Helena Hunting is available now!

Charming, hilarious, and emotional…When Sparks Fly is Helena Hunting at her very best!

Avery Spark is living her best life. Between her friends, her sisters, and Spark House, the event hotel her family owns, she doesn’t have much time for anything else, especially relationships. She’d rather hang out with her best friend and roommate, Declan McCormick, than deal with the dating scene. But everything changes when she is in a car accident and needs someone to care for her as she heals.

Declan avoids relationships, giving him a playboy reputation that he lives up to when he puts a one-night stand ahead of a promise he made to Avery. While he may not have been the one driving the car, he feels responsible for Avery’s injuries and is determined to make it up to her by stepping into the role of caretaker.

Little did they know that the more time they spend in compromising positions, the attraction they’ve been refusing to acknowledge becomes impossible to ignore. When they finally give in to the spark between them, neither is prepared for the consequences. Their love is fragile and all it will take is a blow from the past to shatter it all.

“Leave me with this book, the characters and the bees and I’ll be one happy reader – probably forever.” – The Chatty Romance Reader

When the devil comes to town, you have to meet him head on.

Which is exactly what I did when Grant Stone rolled into our small Texas town, driving a sports car I could fit in the bed of my truck, wearing a suit as black as his soul. He’s here to acquire mineral rights to half a dozen farms in town.

And there’s no way he’s getting mine.

I don’t make deals with the devil.

So when he challenges me to show him the small town ropes, my motivation is the prospect of seeing him make a fool of himself. He might have an angle, but if he thinks he can finagle me into endangering my bee farm, he’s got another thing coming.

Until the line in the sand is washed away.

My farm in danger. A town in upheaval. A man who will stop at nothing to get what he wants.

And me in the middle.

When the devil comes to town, you have to meet him head on.

And when he sneaks into your heart, he’ll only break it.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: L.B. Dunbar’s Learning at 40 ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Well, L.B. Dunbar has done it again. She has written a story in her newest series, Lakeside Cottage, that, once again, will steal your heart. When she left us in Living at 40, Autumn and Logan had found their happy ending under the specter of Ben’s diagnosis. How will Ben’s situation haunt the newest book of the series, Learning at 40? It continues to be the thread that binds these stories together. In this book, Zack, the newly divorced, dad to twins, is trying to make sense of life. Dealing with Ben’s situation, trying to find himself after the divorce, and raising his energetic twin boys mostly on his own, Zack doesn’t know who he is. One night, while looking at his old house from the upper window of his friends’ house next door to it, Zack sees his “angel.” The next-door neighbor seems otherworldly. When his sons escape to the house next door and find his old treehouse, Zack meets his angel, while trying to hide his interest in her behind his gruff exterior. River, the lovely neighbor, has a spine of steel and a compassionate demeanor, thankfully. This entices Zack to want more of her. When he bulldozes through River’s boundaries, both literally and figuratively, these two begin to fall deeply in love…in the span of ten days. However, their pasts haunt their present, and you wonder if these ten days will be all they get, or will Zack end up with his soulmate?

There is so much I adored about Learning at 40, but I want to first begin with the one most imposing thought I had about this book:

It was difficult for me to enjoy Zack. Honestly, it took most of Learning at 40 to appreciate him. And I get it. He has an unresolved issue from his past that he has failed to handle. As such, his emotions are stunted. Yet, time and time again, Zack reads like an out-of-control temperamental beast, much like the behavior of his sons in Living at 40. He loses his temper quickly, and he spends much of this book doing two things: apologizing for losing control or bedding River. This wouldn’t be such an issue if River wasn’t so amazing. Without River, Zack would be almost beyond redemption.

Therefore, the best part of Learning at 40 is Dunbar’s heroine, River. And while she has a bit of a secret, she has immense patience, a caring, beautiful soul, and a compassion for people that, honestly, save this book. Her ability to help Zack evolve into a better man is the best part of this book. I challenge you NOT to fall in love with River. It will be impossible because, at the most basic level, she teaches him to be a better father and a better man.

Additionally, the continuing story of the Four Points is a draw to this book. There is more Ben, Anna, Mason, Logan, and Autumn. There are also more clues to the next book in this series, Loving at 40, and I’m intrigued to see where this goes. I’m impatient for Mason’s story, wondering if the series is going where I think it’s going to go with him. And given Dunbar’s immense capacity to make us fall in love with characters and situations that seem impossible to love, I’m acutely anticipatory for the future stories of this series.

So, here’s the bottom line for L.B. Dunbar’s Learning at 40. If you adore a grumpy, controlling hero who REQUIRES a heroine with a soft hand but a firm sense of self to help him find personal redemption, then you will ADORE this story.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karla Sorensen’s The Lie ✍🏻

Dear Karla,

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I’m not sure if you will see this review. You oftentimes do and bless me with a quick comment, but for some reason, I feel compelled to write directly to you through this review. You see, I was going to start the review by discussing the attributes of the tortured hero, a character deftly developed in Dominic, the hero of your newest book, The Lie. I was going to discuss your impressive capacity to write this indomitable type of hero. With Dominic, it’s clear that the tortured hero must have suffered some kind of personal loss, one that has made him feel as though he needs to control his world by erecting an almost indestructible emotional wall that is difficult to penetrate. It is only with the “right” heroine, someone like your heroine, Faith, who can make it crumble. And that collapsing becomes like the equivalent to a Rocky training scene. Your heart swells as a hero such as Dominic allows the heroine to see his soft side. In The Lie, you construct this so beautifully, turning an incredibly masculine, decidedly grumpy Dominic into an attractive, emotionally available hero who loves his Faith beyond any measure. It’s those moments that make your readers fall in love with you and your beautiful ability to write these types of stories. In fact, my mom is currently reading your Floored. I’ve introduced her to you, and she just told me this morning, as I was driving her to the airport,  that she loves, loves, loves your books. Coming from her, that is high praise.

But I digress from the intention of this letter to you/review of The Lie. What really connected me to this book, however, revolves around a singular moment in your book. It’s the moment when the other Washington Wolves players are away with Dominic for the week, a time for them to to develop a cohesive relationship. James, the quarterback, has invited Dominic to his home, a feat given that Dominic isn’t the most well-liked player on the WW. When he makes the conscious decision to flay his soul open and lay it bare to the other guys, one of them, the rookie, Cartwright, gives him an important lesson. While Dominic is struggling to repair the situation with Faith (c’mon this is romance, so there will always be something to remedy), Cartwright says, “[y]ou let it be uncomfortable.” He goes on to summarize all the ways that Dominic hadn’t allowed himself to sit in that discomfort, something, I might add, that is difficult to do for a controlling person such as Dominic. Cartwright ends his monologue with this beauty: “…And you can be afraid to admit something to Faith, but don’t make some rash decision to make that fear go away because you’re not actually solving it. You face her like a man and say, I love you and I’m afraid to lose you by telling you this. Then you wait and trust she’ll believe you.” He eventually goes on to say that he was “living in the tension, m-fers.” And it was at this moment when my heart swelled because you placed the sage advice in the most rookiest of rookies. Even more, you touched a place in me because I’ve been living in the tension for two years. It’s uncomfortable and difficult, and like Dominic, it doesn’t have a clear resolution beyond me continuing to work on myself. And for a control freak like myself, this is so. DARN. HARD. Right in this moment, and for the rest of The Lie, I felt completely seen, and isn’t that the most powerful part of writing stories? Isn’t it the way that authors connect themselves to their readers AND to humanity? It’s because of this scene (along with other great parts of your book) that I fell madly, deeply in love with Faith and Dominic. They have definitely set the bar high for Lydia and the broody driver for the next book.

But I guess I wrote this as a letter to you because I simply wanted to say “thank you.” Thank you for writing these stories that are a combination of “sweet, steamy, and sensitive.” I can share them with my mom and my friends, and I know that they will come away from them feeling fulfilled.

So that’s it. That’s what I wanted to tell you.

In love and romance,

Professor A
