✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Avery Flynn’s Mama’s Boy ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

I get Avery Flynn’s brand of romance. Centered on moments mixed with a little absurdity and coy romance, you move through her stories with relish as the hero and heroine battle their feelings. This ends solidly in a happy ending and the reader pleased with the journey. Flynn’s latest offering, Mama’s Boy, the first of a series of standalones, orbits her series, The Hartigans and Ice Knights. And I liked it. Overall, I found myself sated by the journey of Dixon and Fiona, one of the Hartigan triplets. But…I have to admit, I was also a little bit confused. Let’s begin there.

  1. I never comment on covers. Really, I never, but I am not a huge fan of the cover for Mama’s Boy because the cover model is not Dixon. He looks like a country hero, not a wealthy, alpha-hole, playboy. Add to that the title, and as I read Mama’s Boy, it didn’t fit. We are told that Dixon is a ‘mama’s boy,’ and I don’t doubt he is, but that isn’t the focus of this story. Instead, “The Bet” or something related to a dating app would make more sense. Even more, within the confines of this story, Dixon makes choices to win a final gift from his grandmother away from his cousins (Griff and Nash). The cover and title miss on encompassing this key aspect of the story.
  2. The first quarter of the book seemed silly. Honestly, it took me until 40% in before I liked the coupling of Fiona and Dixon. Flynn’s choices for them initially make them seem more cartoonish, less real.

However, with those points being said, after the 40% mark, I found myself settling into the story more. I think this has more to do with Fiona and Dixon finding their stride and moving beyond the machinations of his cousins and further into understanding each other. And honestly, the crux of Avery Flynn’s Mama’s Boy lies in the idea of authenticity. Both Dixon and Fiona learn through the evolution of their story to be true to themselves because people like you just as you are. This is always a worthy lesson in any story, and Avery Flynn’s romance entices you with it.

There were moments when I found myself chuckling, and there were a few moments when I was moved by the trials of Dixon and Fiona. By the end of Mama’s Boy, Avery Flynn shows you why people flock to her romances.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Jewel E. Ann’s The Naked Fisherman ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

How to write this review? Hmmm…well, it seems as though I’d love to start with highlighting the chameleon-like nature of Jewel E. Ann. While there are qualities of her stories that both frustrate and endear her readers to her, making her mark on our souls, from book to book, Jewel E. Ann reinvents herself with each new tome. Yes, there is a guaranteed “a ha” or “oh wow” that troubles your spirit. She loves to play with themes that challenge her readers, and she writes real stories for real people, even when she loves to reimagine tropes through a filter that makes them more acceptable, but not always comfortable to consider.

Her newest story, The Naked Fisherman, book 1 of her Naked duet, enacts the qualities I’ve listed above beautifully. Your heart will not be in one piece when you leave this story, but she will use the second book of the duet, The Lost Fisherman, to piece it back together…well sort of. It will take the scope of that entire book to do so, but I digress.

The Naked Fisherman, as it’s labeled, is a coming of age, age-gap, forbidden love story. Remember, though, that in the world of Jewel E. Ann, the story is always more than its labels. It follows Reese, who for this book, is the voice we have to consider the most and is the only voice we get from Ann. Fisher Mann is her foil, her roommate, her mother’s friend, and her boss. And yes, he’s ten years older than her. Yet, from the moment they meet, there is a connection, an attraction, an interest, and at first, Jewel E. Ann allows us to feel the discomfort of this pairing through Reese’s, her heroine’s, naivete. Raised in a strict Christian home with its empirical values, Reese has yet for her values to be challenged by the real world. However, from Day 1 in the shadow of Fisher Mann, Reese begins her journey to experience the world and reconsider the values by which she was raised.

What I loved about this book is the banter and camaraderie between Reese and Fisher. Ann writes their discourse as foreplay. Without their disagreements, there would be no attraction, in my opinion, between Reese and Fisher. It’s what makes their chemistry palpable with their physical attraction as the cherry on the sundae of their relationship. Add in the complications of age and experience, and there is a whole lot of tension in this book. And that is simply the surface-level stuff of The Naked Fisherman.

The real stuff, the gravity of Ann’s book, is its insistence on challenging values and “norms.” Reese comes to Denver with a set of values that she’s been told to believe, untested. From Day 1, she is met with the “real world” through the characterization of Fisher. Through the testing of her beliefs, Reese’s growth begins. Yet, as we find with this book, she needs various teachers, and by the book’s end, Reese’s journey must continue elsewhere. When you get to the end of this first book of a duet, you will moan and cry and NEED the next book. Again, this is the beautiful torture that brings JEA readers back for more, but it’s a poetic end, one carefully constructed by a master storyteller.

I’ve been curious as of late about the romance books written and published in 2020 and 2021. In future years, will we look back and re-see romance authors using the genre to interrogate the way in which a post-COVID world handles truth? When you consider Jewel E. Ann’s Naked Duet, more specifically for purposes of this review, The Naked Fisherman, can we see it as a response to the “truths” and “values” of a certain population in our world? It feels like it. And her duet adds to a pile of books that seem to be doing the same: highlighting the challenge to ‘truth’ and ‘values’ in our current world. I think when you get to the end of this book you might consider that suggestion. It might be better than running for the tissue box to dry your tears or one-clicking The Lost Fisherman in anticipation of Fisher and Reese’s continued journey. But then again…maybe we should take the space to consider Reese’s response to her changing values and sit with it. I think it would make us better people in the end.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Staci Hart’s For Love Or Honey ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

“What they valued had to do with the whole, not the individual, and the truth was the only way in.”

In the space of a week, I read three different rom-coms, and it’s clear: not all rom-coms are created the same. When you read Staci Hart’s For Love Or Honey, you know that, while her hero, Grant, and her heroine, Jo, exude the funny behind a enemies-to-lovers rom com; there is a gravity to Hart’s rom-com that challenges her readers behind a light-hearted laugh.

For Love Or Honey is a story about honesty or truth. Staci Hart weaves this message through the story of Grant and Jo, playing with those ideas in ways specific to her characters. As the face of Flexion, the company keen on buying the Blum farm for its mineral rights, Grant lives a life wanting to please his father, a father incapable of loving him. In the pursuit of his father’s acceptance and love, Grant’s life is conscripted to being or doing anything to gain his father’s interest. This means that Grant lies to himself about what he truly needs. Even more, Grant lies for a living to gain control of people’s farms for Flexion. Basically, Grant’s life is one big lie…and until he comes to Lindenbach, Texas, his life is empty because it has no substance. Hart points us to his lack of authenticity.

Jo is as real as they come. She sees Grant as a challenge to her generations-old family farm, and she has taken on the mantle to run him out of town. Unfortunately, she lies to herself initially about her attraction to Grant Stone. Their chemistry is undeniable, but as the face of the enemy, she must deny it and him…until she can’t. Instead, she helps Grant recognize his authentic self as she challenges him to farm life. As he becomes more honest with himself and his needs, Jo becomes honest too. When they acknowledge their interest, Hart creates another level of dishonesty when Jo and Grant grow feelings for each other, and they deny it. When their web becomes entangled, the depth of Hart’s storytelling moves us away from the comedy aspects of her small-town romance and moves us toward something more grave and serious. This is a convention of Hart’s brand of romance.

As lighter fare on her booklist, Hart’s For Love or Honey still challenges her readers. With her newest story, she reminds us to be authentic whether it’s to our $exuality, our life choices, or our love. Through the scope of Grant and Jo’s journey, she tethers them to truth, and it feels like a response to our world right now where truth seems flexible. She highlights the consequences of living your lies and the discontent that follows. We need stories like For Love Or Honey whether it be for entertainment or inspiration. I love the world of Staci Hart’s Blums, and I cannot wait for more of their stories.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s Kiss and Don’t Tell ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

There are certain truths about Meghan Quinn’s brand of storytelling that are self-evident:

  1. She writes the heck out of an ensemble romance or series of standalones, world-building like no other.
  2. She can make you chuckle and tear up in equal measure in the space of one book.
  3. She inhabits various sports romances seamlessly.
  4. She writes romances that, while fictional, feel real to the reader.

When you enter her newest story, Kiss and Don’t Tell, all of these truths are glaringly apparent. Page after page, you fall deeply for her hero, Pacey (no…not that Dawson’s Pacey), and her heroine, Winnie. But even more, you start to fall for Pacey’s fellow hockey player friends, Taters, Posey, Hornsby, and Holmes. In fact, this reader was ECSTATIC because Quinn’s flex is her capacity to reel you into her worlds of romance, and she makes it clear that stories are coming for Pacey’s friends. Even more, his friends are responsible for the levity of Pacey and Winnie’s story. While these two have a perfect mix of hilarity and seriousness, Pacey’s friends act as comic relief and wizened sages throughout Quinn’s book. In fact, my favorite moment comes when Pacey must earn back Winnie’s trust. Like a Rocky training montage, Pacey and his friends make a plan to win her back. I found myself chuckling out loud at their antics and banter.

Like Pacey and his friends, Winnie has friends who are over the top fun. Let me say…Winnie’s friend, Katherine, steals any scene you find her in. She is ridiculous in her protectiveness, but her characterization ameliorates the severity of Winnie’s story. When the story gets too serious, you can count on Max and Katherine, just like Pacey’s crew, to bring wisdom or comedy to the situation.

Pacey and Winnie’s story is equal parts steamy (oh boy…these two are dirty. There is a scene in the shower that will fog your glasses), sweet (while Pacey is a pro hockey player, he is far from a player, and his interest in Winnie will make you swoon), and sensitive (insta-love looks good until it doesn’t, and Pacey and Winnie’s path isn’t easy). By the end of the story, honestly, you’ll want more of Meghan Quinn’s world in Kiss and Don’t Tell. Having read Quinn’s baseball and football players, I had an inkling that she could also write the heck out of a hockey romance; and she did not disappoint. Instead, I’m rabid for more of Taters, Hornsby, Posey, and Holmes. Meghan Quinn makes you love her as she causes her heroes and heroines to steal your heart.
