From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Skye Warren comes the next installment in her Rochester series.

Marjorie Dunn is hiding in plain sight. The past can’t find her at the peaceful inn she owns in a quiet coastal town in Maine.

Until Sam Brewer walks through the door. He arrives in the dead of night, with a dark suit and storm-gray eyes.

Marjorie knows better than to trust this stranger, but she can’t resist his touch. Every kiss binds them together. Every night draws the danger close.

She risks her heart with him, but more than that, she risks her life.

The past has caught up with her. And it wants her dead.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Excerpt

“Tell me more about you, Marjorie Dunn.”
“I like it here in Eben Cape.” She watches me carefully as she says this. Worried I might reject this idea, maybe. But hell. It’s nice here. It could be a home. “I tried to make a life that my parents would have been proud of. They probably never imagined I’d own an inn, but they’d like it here, I think. They’d think it was peaceful. They’d understand wanting to live in a small town. It’s beautiful, even in the winter. It’s calm. No monsters lurking in the shadows, except…”
“Except?”
Her brow furrows. “No place is perfect. I’ve met some men here who made life difficult. My friend Emily’s husband was one of those. He’s gone now.”
“Because of you?”
She snorts. “No. He got into an argument with her brother, and he was killed. It was the talk of the town last year. Made me nervous to think about people killing each other. I didn’t like that. I was relieved when things quieted down. Relieved for Emily, especially.” Marjorie finds another one of my scars and focuses on it. “Do the scars still bother you?”
“No.” It’s tough to get closer to her, but I manage another inch. “That’s the thing about scars. They grow over with tissue that doesn’t have nerve endings. They don’t feel any pain. They’re basically dead.”
“It is a little like death,” she agrees. “But you’re still alive.”
“The scars will be with me forever. Same with the hidden ones. Those wounds are covered in the same scar tissue. I don’t feel anything.”
That’s what I’ve told myself for years. It’s bullshit. I feel things looking into Marjorie’s eyes. It’s bullshit for her, too. Her wounds are there in her heart. She’s built this inn as a guard for them, and she’s been doing a damn good job.
“I wish I felt less sometimes. You know…” Another thoughtful sigh. “I’ve made a home here, but it’s not the same. Nobody ever stays for long. Maybe that’s just how life is.”
The promise is on my lips. I won’t leave.
But of course I will.
That’s the job.
That’s my life.
It’s not going to happen this minute, though. Not in the next hour. Not even today. Fuck it. I’m staying with her at least for today. I let myself indulge in the fantasy. I normally don’t do that. Imagination can keep you alive through a dark night, but this isn’t about imagination. It’s about being in this moment.
I fold my arms around the beautiful innkeeper in my bed. “Tell me more.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5++ ⭐️ Review: Penny Reid’s Tend Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 5 ++ ⭐️

I’ve just finished Penny Reid’s Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend, aka TTTSYB (for purposes of this review), and I don’t have the words to properly urge you to read this book. Forgive me if this review reads all over the place, but frankly, there is much to unpack from TTTSYB

Here are the big messages:

Women in STEM is crucial. It feels like an imperative movement that should have more focus than brilliant stories such as Penny Reid’s book. Yes, I know adept researchers are writing on this topic, and we hear echoes of this message in our society. Yet, Reid underscores it in her story in a way that makes you realize the movement needs more heft to it. There is a moment in this story when Winnie speaks with a reporter that melts your heart. I’m an educator, so maybe that moment is more profound for me as the reporter shows Winnie the gravity of her “mission” in life as an educator. I’m not sure, but it’s one of the moments of this story that sticks to my ribs…and that’s important.

What is normal? Accepting people as they are is necessary. Both her MMC, Byron, and FMC, Winnie, process life in different ways. For much of the story, Byron believes he’s “broken” or “weird” (thanks to his DA roommate, Jeff…gah, we HATE Jeff). However, Winnie helps Bryon see that he’s just different, not less than. And that message is hard to accept but necessary to hear. Similarly, Winnie’s past, one tainted by the harsh criticisms of an uncle, has also influenced her choices in the present. Her friend, Amelia, and Byron both work to help her understand that she can be herself and be loved too. Her discussions with both of them made me cry as I recognized her pain.

My favorite line of the book: “Only the brave love.” This is the crux of the romance portion of TTTSYB. This nugget hits at 83% after Winnie and Byron have tussled through their attractions, lusts, and interests in each other. In other words, this book baby is a TRUE slow burn, which I love for Winnie and Byron…and for the romance world in general. There is hate to love here; there are elements of insta-love in TTTSYB; and there is slow, slow burn. And I loved every moment of it. If you are someone who loves large helpings of eroticism with your romance, this isn’t it. If you love a romance with perfect edges, it’s not here. For me, Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend is Penny Reid’s most real romance, and it’s messy, insightful, challenging, heartrending, and Winnie and Byron feel like almost her purest (not in a $exual sense) couple characterization.

And I’m so not okay after reading this book. Fiction imitates life, or at least the best of it should. I’m sure I shouldn’t share this here, but I need readers to understand that aspects of this book replicate my life. But where Winnie and Byron, with aplomb, I might add, have communicated and worked through their issues, my issues are still a mess. So as I was reading TTTSYB, it was like looking at one’s reflection in a mirror when you look hungover, with disheveled hair, bags under your eyes, etc. There is pain in it, but there is hope that you’ll clean yourself up and live another day. My husband holds aspects of Byron, and I, like Winnie, am a people pleaser to a detriment, never wanting to make waves. Unlike Byron, however, my husband is not self-aware, so even though he learned a few years ago that is probably on the spectrum, he has never looked inward to consider that. And as you can imagine, it has changed our marriage. I’ve acted as a buffer, peacemaker, and glue in our household for most of our married life, and I’ve resented it. So the pain of TTTSYB is its hope because life, for me, at times, feels hopeless. Yet, that hope is also a promise of sorts. This is why trying to write this review feels heady for me. I love this book and feel emotionally entangled in it.

So there’s that. By my estimation, Penny Reid, especially after Ten Trends to Seduce Your Bestfriend, is a genius. I love her passion for storytelling which is evident on the pages of her stories. Her ideas seem insistent, and she takes her time in gifting us with them. I love that because when I turn to the first page of her book there is the promise that her story will change me. And while I don’t think TTTSYB has done that, I do think it’s allowed me to dream about a better future for myself.

In love and romance,

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Skye Warren’s Behind Closed Doors ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

If you’ve read Skye Warren’s Rochester Trilogy, you’ve met Marjorie, the heroine of her newest novella, Behind Closed Doors. Marjorie is the inn owner where Beau and Jane reside after his mansion burns down. In that trilogy, she’s fairly unassuming, although she plays a minor part in the situation between Beau and his past.

Warren has granted us access to Marjorie’s life in this newest book. Marjorie leads a quiet life, running the inn and crafting scrapbooks for others. Her life is interrupted one night by a new guest, Sam Smith. Exuding darkness, Marjorie should be frightened of him; instead, she is drawn to him. They quickly become entangled, and this short novella clearly shows Warren’s prowess with crafting steamy scenes. In fact, given the brevity of this story form, Sam and Marjorie’s story is insta-love with the complication of her past, adding a bit of suspense to her story.

In true Skye Warren form, Behind Closed Doors is a fast gobble of romance. She draws you into Marjorie’s existence by her quietude. Due to her past, she lives a solitary existence. For the most part, she’s fine with that until Sam upends it. This novella holds this brilliant metaphor wherein Marjorie, whose past has been erased, creates scrapbooks of others’ experiences. Once you read this story, you understand the profundity of her actions. Warren carefully weaves this truth to the end of the story.

I struggled a bit with Warren’s style. Much of the book is punctuated with simple sentences that stunt the storytelling flow. Sometimes, this can be impactful for underscoring aspects of a story, but in this form, it felt jarring. I love that Warren takes us back to one of her popular trilogies, but Marjorie’s story feels like a quick addendum instead of anything significant.

For me, the best part of Behind Closed Doors is Skye Warren’s extended metaphor, one that reminds us of the significance of losing one’s past while needing to find an abundant future. Sam and Marjorie’s journey is difficult, but it finds its home in a happy ending that leaves you satiated.

Not Fooling Anyone, an all-new fake relationship college romance from Allie Winters, is LIVE in Kindle Unlimited!

The deal is simple—pretend to be Ethan’s girlfriend for a psych study and we each get a nice payday. Despite him being a dumb jock who willingly gets punched for fun at my dad’s boxing gym, I can handle it. I’ve mastered the art of keeping others at a distance. Especially after… Well, never mind that.

Except, I didn’t count on him not understanding the definition of boundaries. Suddenly, we’re having to fake being in love all over campus to keep up the ruse. And when he tries to slip under the barriers I’ve worked so hard to create? Yeah, that’s not happening. Even if it turns out he’s surprisingly understanding… and funny… and charming… and smarter than I ever would have given him credit for. Not to mention that muscled body from all that boxing…

No, that’s irrelevant. I may have misjudged him, but that doesn’t mean I’m interested. He has no idea what kind of baggage I’m carrying. A relationship is the last thing on my mind.

Even if I’m not fooling anyone.

‘Not Fooling Anyone’ is a full-length contemporary romance and can be read as a standalone. Book #2 in the Lessons Learned series, Educated Romance World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

Book Smart, an all new friends-to-lovers sweet romance by debut author Amanda Pennington, is LIVE in Kindle Unlimited!

Melanie Hirsch is tired of watching life pass her by…

I’ve spent the last few years watching my dreams of a writing career and true love fade away, settling for a dead-end job and denying my feelings for my best friend – until I find a list of dating advice for single women to “find a husband” in the 1950s. I decide to experiment: try out the 1950s advice on my 21st-century dating pool and write about the results. If love is timeless, some of the dating advice still holds value. Maybe my experiment will launch my writing career. Maybe I’ll get over my best friend and meet someone new. Either way, I’m done watching from the sidelines.

Cameron Whitacre can’t wait forever…

I’ve spent the last few years in love with my best friend, hoping she’ll notice my friendly overtures have more than friendly intentions – but before I realize what’s happening, she declares me her wingman for a dating experiment. This idea could launch her writing career, so I’m trying to be supportive. But her experiment turns my life into a desperation-fueled dumpster fire. I need to show her how I feel without jeopardizing our friendship, all before she falls for someone else.

✍🏻 Chemistry, Forbidden Love, Charming Hero, Independent Heroine. Max Monroe’s The Secret has all of this and more. ✍🏻

Let the games begin…

The Secret, an all-new uber-sexy, laugh-out-loud rom-com from New York Times bestselling author Max Monroe, is available now!

Read my 4.5 ⭐️ review HERE.

Dear Fellow Bookworms,

I need your help.

I, Rachel Rose, am in quite the pickle with a hot-as-sin English Lit professor by the name of Ty Winslow, and I don’t know how to get out of it.

Let me break it down for you:

Girl meets Guy.

Girl gives Guy her underwear on a dare but nothing else identifying (like her name or number) because she plans to never see Guy again.

But Girl does see Guy again, in a very professional setting, where she is to be the Teaching Assistant to his Professor for an entire semester.

Girl would like to ignore all events of the past, but Guy is a whole list of tempting things that are hard to resist. (See below:)

#1: Insanely attractive.
#2: The most fun a girl could ever have.
#3: Successful and intelligent.
#4: He can quote Walt Whitman at the drop of a hat—which I’m sure you know is a dangerous thing for a literature-lover.
#5: Smooth with a capital S. He could charm the panties off a woman WITHOUT the help of a dare.

And now, Mr. Hot Professor, the man I’m determined to resist, is challenging me to a competition—a playful, secret game, so to speak—where the winner takes all.

My plan? Play the game long enough to win—long enough to walk away with the upper hand—without doing something stupid like falling in love.

It’s possible . . . right?

If you have any advice, please reach out to me soon—before it’s too late.

XOXO,
Rachel

TY

I glance pointedly down at the ring—a mood ring—on her right ring finger, and she lets go of my hand like it’s morphed into a scorching hot plate.

Rachel Rose is her. The woman from Orchid.

“What’s your mood tonight?” I asked her.

And she answered with a seductive, “A little wild. A little reckless.”

The conversation I had with her that night replays in my mind, and I know there’s no way in hell I’d get those big green eyes and entrancing lips of hers confused with someone else.

And fuck me, this woman, she’s even more of a goddess than my brain allowed me to remember.

Her skirt, coat, and blouse are classic and professional, but even they can’t hide the mind-blowing curves that lie beneath the material. Her breasts are full, her hips and thighs perfectly rounded, and her legs shapely in a way that reminds me of paintings from the Renaissance.

She is the exact type of curvy that turns me into a fool.

And her face is undeniably beautiful too. More so than the dim lights of Orchid allowed me to see.

“Rachel,” I repeat her name, letting it fall slowly off my tongue. “It’s always good to be able to put a name to a face.”

Her laugh is awkward, but that’s probably because she’s been lying through her pretty little lips ever since we made eye contact. “Well, it’s nice to meet you too, Professor Winslow.”

“Please, Rachel, just call me Ty.”

“O-okay,” she answers and swallows hard against a nervous titter in her throat. “So…uh…what would you like for me to accomplish today?”

How about you acknowledge that you gave me your panties? is the very first thought to come to mind. Is that something you do often? and Or was it just something you did for me? are the second and third.

Thankfully, my brain-to-mouth filter seems to be connected today because no matter what my dick has prepared in its PowerPoint presentation, this is Nate’s daughter.

I can’t go there.

“We’ll keep it laid-back today. I have a folder of information for you. My class schedules, some teaching plans for the semester, that kind of stuff,” I answer, even though everything inside me wants to press her more about that Friday night. I swear, this woman has some balls to just outright deny something we both know is true.

To be honest, in a weird way, I think I might admire her for it.

“Okay, cool,” she answers calmly, but I don’t miss the way her fingers fidget with her coat.

I walk back over to my desk and shuffle through the mess of papers and files to find the stack that’s for her. “I went ahead and compared our schedules. The only class of mine that you’ll be able to attend consistently is my afternoon English 101 class with the freshmen. Though, I’d love to see you fit in a few of my other courses throughout this semester, but not to the detriment of your master’s workload.”

I hand her the thick file, and she takes it with hesitant hands, her eyes acting like my face is the sun and avoiding direct contact for long periods of time is needed for survival.

“This is probably not everything, but it will give you a good start,” I instruct, and for some insane reason, I can’t swipe the smile off my face. There is just something about her and the way she is avoiding the reality of our initial introduction that, the more I think about it, is amusing as hell. “Log-ins for my online drive, my class schedule for the spring semester, some of my teaching plans for English 101, and a few other odds and ends I know will be of use.”

She stares down at the file in her hands. Which I’m guessing has more to do with avoidance than interest, seeing as it’s a plain manila folder. “Great. Thanks.”

“I also think it would be a good idea for us to get to know each other a little better,” I say and lean back against my desk, crossing my arms at my chest. I know I’m putting her on the spot, but I’m so fucking curious if she’s ever going to break from the façade of acting like Orchid never happened, it feels like I have to push. “So, tell me a little bit about yourself, Rachel.”

Her green eyes flicker up and hold, and I know immediately that something has changed. She’s formed a backbone or found her courage or is gearing up to tell me to go fuck myself. Whatever it is, it’s beautiful. “What do you want to know exactly?”

“Just a little about you. What are your greatest passions in literature? Your likes? Dislikes?” And how often do you go to nightclubs and give men your underwear?

She shrugs. Toys with the file in her hands. “Well, I got my bachelor’s at Stanford. Took a few years off to…I don’t know…not focus on my career.” Her laugh is self-deprecating. “And literature, devouring books, writing…I love all of it. Though I’m not certain what I want to do with my master’s, I know it will lead me to where I should be.”

“And what do you do for fun outside of NYU’s campus?”

You bastard. You just can’t help yourself, can you?

“For fun? Off campus?” she questions. “I don’t know. I mean, I just got back to New York, so I’d say that answer is pending.” The hint of a fire blazes behind her eyes, and what leaves her gorgeous mouth doesn’t disappoint. “And personally, I don’t think what I do for fun off campus should be any of your concern.”

I love it. She knows when to put her foot down. Strong, curvaceous, beautiful women are my fucking weakness.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Catherine Cowles’s Falling Embers ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

In a word, Catherine Cowles’s newest romance, Falling Embers, is tumultuous. It’s heartrending, beautifully crafted, and layered with heavy emotion. As the second book of her Tattered & Torn series, you leave its final pages having endured an emotional onslaught of edge-of-your-seat suspense.

This story follows Hadley, the sister of Hayes from the first book of the series, Tattered Stars, and his best friend, Calder. Much like Tattered Stars, this romance is rife with the effects of past trauma. In Falling Embers, those effects are meted out on Hadley, and it squeezes your heart. There is a beautiful message in this story about acceptance. Hadley has lived a restricted life due to her sister’s kidnapping. She has been made to feel that her adventure-loving self is wrong. What’s so interesting about this romance is her parents are contrasted to Everly’s parents from Tattered Stars. In that book, Everly’s survivalist upbringing informs her sense of self. Hadley’s parents are loveable and compassionate to everyone, yet Hadley’s mother’s expectations of her figuratively puncture her daughter’s soul. Cowles deftly shows the impact that two different types of parents can have on their children and their futures. Each time Hadley and her mother connect in this book, my soul hurt for Hadley as her mother struggles to “see” her independent, intelligent, and insightful daughter. Cowles takes Hadley’s pain and uses her to wisely encourage Calder’s daughters. These moments tear at your heart as you want everyone to desperately accept Hadley just as she is, but many of the characters, including Calder, take much of the story to move beyond their fears in accepting what makes her unique.

Calder’s love for Hadley becomes the underlying power of the story. Thankfully, Cowles doesn’t make her readers pine too long for their coupling. But I think the true focus of Falling Embers is Hadley’s journey. Calder is the typical Cowles MMC: handsome, powerful, compassionate, and initially acutely lacking in understanding. However, as they fall in love with their FMC, they grow and become better versions of themselves. For me, though, Hadley is key to the success of this story. Unfortunately, Cowles doesn’t hold back from the afflictions of her heroine. It makes her resilient, and it causes you, the reader, to fall in love with her as a powerful female figure.

I started Falling Embers, intent on reading a few chapters while reading another book. The consequence of this was the inability to set it aside. Catherine Cowles weaves magic into her stories, and you simply get lost in them over and over again.

Excerpt

My new neighbor arrived at midnight on a Thursday. First came the moving truck, followed by a Jeep Wrangler. Mrs. Cooper, the former owner of the house, passed a while back. A damn shame. The woman was not only nice, but she made biscuits like you wouldn’t believe. For years the grand old Victorian house sat empty at the end of the cul-de-sac. Not unusual for a small town. Few people wanted to move to the middle of nowhere in Northern California, no matter how picturesque it might be. While the place had been sold not long after listing, there’d been no sighting of the new owner until now.
“What the heck?” I mumbled to myself, standing at the window.
Who moved in the middle of the night? It seemed covert and suspicious. Like something a criminal or government agent would do. Although, maybe they just traveled far and this happened to be the time they arrived. But most people would stay at a hotel and wait for daylight to do this sort of thing. Surely.
The only things ever happening at midnight in Wildwood were: 1. Harry, the town drunk, performing Bob Dylan classics in the middle of Main Street. 2. Me, an insomniac, wandering aimlessly around my house. That was it. Everyone else in the whole wide world—or our corner of it—was fast asleep.
Half hidden behind a curtain, I watched the truck being unloaded. A full moon shone down through the pine trees as the moving men hauled stuff inside. The first guy, the one who drove the Jeep, went straight into the house. He was tall and wore a ball cap. That was about all I could see. Maybe he was setting the place up for his wife and family. Maybe he had a boyfriend. He couldn’t possibly be single, heterosexual, under sixty, and emotionally mature. My luck just wasn’t that good. Not that I intended to date again in this lifetime.
Whoever he was and whatever he was doing, it would all be known in due course. Such was the joy of small-town life.
Once the furniture was moved inside, things got a little dull. There’s not much you can tell about a person from their boxes.
I took the opportunity to once again check the locks on all my windows and doors. After that, I made a cup of chamomile tea. Neither of these things helped me sleep, but the rituals were soothing. Mom always said I had a busy mind. I didn’t necessarily think about anything useful, I just thought a lot. At night, I tended to think about books, bad memories, and ex-boyfriends. The last two were often one and the same.
As a child, I was the daydreamer who got busted humming in class when everyone else was concentrating. (Like anybody actually needed algebra. If you can work out the discount at a sale, you’re good to go. Then again, this attitude might explain why my life had gone approximately nowhere.)
I returned to the window just in time to see my mystery man reappear. The new neighbor strode out to the Jeep and opened up the back. When he once more headed toward the house, the ball cap was gone and his short hair was on display. In each hand he carried a guitar case.
I perked up. Musicians were cool. Unless he owned electric guitars and believed in turning the volume up to eleven. That could get old fast.
As he got closer to the house, the porchlight hit him and…huh. Something about his profile tugged at a memory.
Guess he felt my gaze, because he turned toward my place. And whoa. His lips were a thin line, his jaw set to cranky, and none of it mattered—the man was beautiful. Though he really was strangely familiar.
Meanwhile, with only a lamp on behind me, I couldn’t have been more than an outline. A shadowy person lurking in the dark. Great. Nothing like being spied on to make you feel welcome in your new neighborhood. So much better than a casserole or cookies.
Wait! I knew where I recognized him from. Only it couldn’t be, because that would be crazy. Absolutely fucking wild. Yet there he stood.
“Holy shit,” I whispered.
My new neighbor was a goddamn rock star.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Max Monroe’s The Secret ✍🏻

Overall Grade: 4.5 ⭐️

Max Monroe’s Winslow Brothers stories are next-level for them. Their newest romance, The Secret, introduces us to one of the Winslow rabble-rousers, Ty. Like his younger brother, Jude, Ty is a playboy, a professor by day and a ladies’ man by night. He’s fun-loving, never meets a stranger, talented in both the classroom and the bedroom, but not interested in the type of commitment Jude and Flynn have found for themselves. In fact, he seems rather allergic to it.

Enter the powerhouse of Max Monroe’s story: Rachel. Set aside Rachel and Ty’s instant chemistry, move past the sultriness of their $ex, skip over Ty’s attractiveness, and you find the heart of this story in Rachel. In order for Ty to ever consider commitment and a future as a married man, it is imperative that he finds a woman who brings him both figuratively and literally to his knees. She must be intelligent, strong-willed, and willing to put him in his place when he’s out of control. And Rachel is a powerhouse. I loved her the most in this romance because her difficulties felt real. Living in her mother’s shadow, which is created by your father, plagues her. It causes her to doubt herself and lose her shine. Max Monroe gifts us with a woman who feels very, very real through her characterization: she’s buxom, curvy, and struggling to stand up to a parent who doesn’t quite see the real her. She’s also relationship-shy, given her father’s criticism of her life. Add to that the fact that Ty is the professor she TAs for…and it’s all kinds of forbidden feeling. This makes The Secret deliciously dirty.

I will admit, though. Of the first three books of this series, The Bet, The Pact, and The Secret, Flynn is winning, having edged Ty slightly. I suspect that I will adore Remi’s story the most. Especially as we are given a bit of a sneak peek into his potential love interest. However, the Winslow family continues to add humor and sentimentality to The Secret just as it did with the first two books of the series. I saw a comment in Max Monroe’s Facebook group that asked for a Mama Winslow story. That might not be a bad request.

If you love forbidden romance speckled with rom-com humor, some serious eroticism, and a wily MMC and FMC who seem to steady each other, then The Secret by Max Monroe is your next read. If you’re a Max Monroe fan, Ty and Rachel feel like Thatch and Cassie-lite.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 Catherine Cowles’s Falling Embers is gorgeous. Calder and Hadley’s story will make your heart hurt in the best of ways. It’s LIVE, so run and get your copy of it. ✍🏻

“A top must read for 2022”
—Samantha Young, New York Times bestselling author

Falling Embers, an all-new second chance romance filled with suspense from Catherine Cowles, is available now!

I’ve loved Calder Cruz from the moment he taught me how to fly. Racing down a mountain and giving me the release I so desperately needed. My understanding. My safe space.

Hadley has fought for a life of her own ever since her sister’s kidnapping. When she was drowning in expectations and family pressures, Calder was always the one who understood her.

Until one night changed it all. From best friends to strangers in a single breath.

She’s like a fire that lives inside me. Even when I thought it was all burned out, there were still embers that lived in my bones.

Calder knows what it’s like to almost lose the people he loves most. He’ll never make that kind of mistake again. Working at the fire station and taking care of his daughters are the only things he needs.

All it takes is a single moment to make him realize how wrong he is. A split second of coming close to losing the woman he has always loved.

But as long-buried embers light anew, there are those who lurk in the shadows. And they’ll do whatever it takes to extinguish that flame for good…
