Review: Layla Hagen’s Meant for You

“‘This is home for me. You are,’ he whispered.”

My first foray into Layla Hagan’s books was The Bennett Family Series. When she began The Connor Family series, I counted myself in. If they were anything like their cousins, I knew I would be hooked. And hooked I am.

The third book of her series, Meant for You, follows the second oldest brother of the Connor Family, Will. A police detective and owner of various rental properties, Will is not looking for love, but, one day, he meets Paige accidentally, and he’s smitten. Paige has just moved from Paris and is simply looking to reintegrate into a life she left behind years before. However, like Will, she finds herself attracted to his good looks, cocky attitude, and caring demeanor. Their story follows them through career changes and a quest for a romantic relationship.

Together, Will and Paige have chemistry galore. From their first meeting, we feel their attraction. Thankfully, it doesn’t take them long to acknowledge it and act upon it. This isn’t the type of angsty romance where you constantly worry about the H/h. You know fairly early on that they will be together. Yes, they have problems, namely Will’s job puts him at some risk and he has a tendency not to communicate well. However, Paige’s influence on him helps him with his challenges. Also, these two are hot in bed. They light the bedroom on fire.

I appreciate Hagen’s books because you feel as though you are wrapped in a comfy blanket of romantic fiction. There are so many romance stories wherein the H/h struggle or the entire relationship seems founded on sex that the minute they decide to marry as the reader you’re surprised. That isn’t Hagen. She takes her time developing the relationships of her characters. There is a bit of strife within the relationships, but they are typical of real life struggles, not fictional book dilemmas.

If you want to wrap yourself in a blanket of romance, then Layla Hagen’s book, Meant for You, is it.

Overall: 4 Stars

Genevive Chamblee’s Defending the Net

Title: Defending The Net
Author: Genevive Chamblee
Genre: M/M Sports Romance

Add to your TBR – Goodreads

Two hot-shot hockey players are about to clash in Genevive Chamblee’s sexy M/M romance Defending the Net.

Crossing the line can cost the game.

Brighton Rabalais only wants to play hockey. He’s uninterested in the politics behind the sport, but his recruiting to the Saint Anne’s Civets is as much about politics as it is his hockey abilities. He’s been hired to replace the enigmatic, three-time champion, veteran goalie, Gatien Glesseau, who happens to be as sexy as he is talented.

Their clashing is inevitable, but Brighton can’t get a read on Gatien. However, with his own secrets a concern, Brighton doesn’t need another complication. But when Gatien threatens to invade Brighton’s privacy, Brighton defends his heart with the same vigor and passion as he does the net.

An astringent odor of aged scotch mixed with sweet tobacco hung in the air, teasing Brighton’s nostrils as he and his roommate, Dylan, maneuvered a path through the rowdy crowd to a table being wiped down by a waitress in a dim corner. In the swell, bodies pressed against him. Overapplied colognes and perfumes transferred and smeared onto his sleeves as he squeezed past, leaving him smelling as if he’d been in a house of ill repute by the time he’d crossed the room.
A few feet from his destination, Brighton struck what felt like a river barge—the broad chest of Gatien Glesseau, the Civets’ starting goalie, with a gorgeous blonde draped on his right and a sexy redhead on his left. The impact whooshed Brighton’s breath from his lungs and sent jagged heat seeping into his bone marrow, filling him with indefinable emotions. Dylan collided with his backside. To balance, Brighton splayed his palms across the soft silk of Gatien’s shirt, and his stomach flipped in a weird flutter. He squelched it as best he could and blinked to clear his murky vision from the smoke. So much for city ordinances regarding no smoking inside public businesses. Lifting his chin, Brighton’s eyes jerked to Gatien’s face.
Instant frostbite. The Viking of a man’s large eyes narrowed to slits with an ethereal glow beneath thick lashes, his square jaw dusted with stubble clenched, and a crease deepened across his forehead, like a crack in a cement sidewalk. His lips formed an unmoving line, taut and peeved. Even in the diffused lighting, Brighton saw Gatien’s pectorals flex and strain against the fabric and the slight lump of an Adam’s apple peeking above the button-down with the sleeves folded neatly at the elbows.
“Sorry,” Brighton murmured, retreating and lowering his hands. Of all the people to stumble into, within fifteen minutes of arriving, he had found the one person who happily would build a pyre beneath him.
Reaching the booth, Brighton slid across the fresh-smelling leather seat and yanked at the collar of his starched button-up tucked neatly in his creased linen trousers.
The waitress looked up, tossed her rag on a tray with the empty glasses, and smiled. “What can I get you gentlemen?”
Brighton’s lips moved, but he emitted no sound.
“Whatever’s on tap,” Dylan interjected, tugging the hem of his skintight V-neck that rode up with his every movement. Despite the amount of pulling, the shirt refused to reach the waistband of his jeggings.
The waitress giggled. “I’m afraid you’re going to have to do better than that, honey. Everything’s on tap tonight. The Cats are out, and they celebrate big. It’s a coach’s birthday.”
Dylan stole a glance at his companion. Brighton failed to respond, and Dylan turned back to the waitress. “Beer, then.”
“Ale, IPA, lager, malt, Pilsner, porter, or stout?”
“Oh.” Dylan considered. “What do you suggest?”
“Well, striplings such as yourselves usually appreciate an IPA.”
Dylan nodded. “Sounds good.”
“I’ll be right back with that order.” The waitress collected her tray and sauntered through the mass of partygoers toward the cylindrical bar surrounding a succession of brass faucets.
Dylan scanned the room before settling his gaze on Brighton. “This is some place, huh? Posh.”
Brighton silently critiqued the room. None of the watering holes he frequented had mahogany bars with chrome trim or marble fountains. “Maybe a little too much,” Brighton stated, finally finding his voice. He interlocked his fingers, his thumbs circling each other.
“Will you calm down? We’re supposed to be here.”

Review: Willow Winters’s Endless (The Merciless Series)

“The moment I saw him, I knew deep in the marrow of my bones that I belonged to this man. The other half to my soul. Holding his life to mine is the worst thing I’ve ever felt in this world.”

Willow Winters has written an epic love tale of two star-crossed lovers in her Merciless Series. Endless is the final book in the story of Aria and Carter, people from different families at odds with each other. Through each of the books in the series, whether you approved of Carter’s methods of obtaining Aria or his ways of keeping her, it was written in the stars that these two would end up together.

I was thankful to get my hands on an ARC of this book because Winters left us with a cliffhanger in the third book of the series, Breathless. At the start of this book, that cliffhanger is resolved quickly, but our H/h struggle to reconcile their relationship. In fact, that is THE struggle of this book: can people from different families who hate each other, even though they love each other, be together “endlessly?” You will need to read the book to find out.

I think the goal of Winters for this book was humanizing Carter. In the first three books, he embodies the role of head of a crime family. He inhabits this role in such a way that his humanity doesn’t exist.  He allows himself to take Aria and hold her captive, taking her virtue at any time. Until he finds his humanity, his self-sacrifice, he cannot be with Aria.

Even more, until Aria recognizes her own power in her choice and in her family, the two can have no future. Once she becomes a woman of strength, her fate with Carter is determined.

Together, Aria and Carter are the power of this book. The rest of the story is ancillary to their struggle and the resolution of their struggle. Honestly, for most of the book, my stomach hurt because they could not come together. Unfortunately, tragedy must strike in order for them to fully recognize the truth of their relationship. In this moment, my stomach stopped hurting, and I could finally relax. “I’m where I’m supposed to be. Beside Carter Cross. Our present and our future tied together. ‘We will rule. That’s what’s going to happen, my songbird.’”

Like the first three books, this book is just as angsty up until the very end. You will love Aria and Carter and root for them even when all hope seems lost. Winters has created a compelling story that will continue on with Jace’s story (and I hope Nikolai’s, Declan’s, etc.) It will rip your heart out a bit but patch it back together in the end.

Overall: 5 Star Read

Review: Winter Renshaw’s Exmas

I am a BIG Winter Renshaw fan. The first book I ever read of hers was given to me as an ARC, and I had not been familiar with her writing. That first book grabbed me and made me a perpetual fan.

When I saw that she had another book releasing this week, Exmas, I needed to get my hands on it, and I did. The story follows Joa and Reed, former co-workers with benefits. They have a whirlwind $ex affair that ends with Reed “stealing” a job promotion from Joa. Devastated and feeling humiliated, Joa leaves and transfers to another office near her familial home, separating herself from Reed. A year later, Reed lands in Joa’s office, seeking to rekindle their relationship. Unfortunately, Joa still feels hurt by Reed’s betrayal, and she struggles to forgive and forget. Will they reconcile and become something more? That is the question of this story.

From the outset, I was not a Reed fan. In fact, it took most of the book to like this guy. I’ve never felt that way reading a Winter Renshaw book, and I was worried that he was irredeemable. It’s devastating to read a romance and kind of hate the male hero. However, as is the case with her stories, we soon understand Reed’s motivations for his actions, and he becomes the swoon-worthy male hero typical of most romances.

Enter Joa. I love a smart, strong, driven female hero. I love when she can stand up against the alpha male. I love a woman who is, quite frankly, smarter than the main male in the story. And Joa inhabits all of these characteristics. There were so many times in this story when my heart hurt for Joa. There were also times when I was disappointed in her inability to let go of her hurt. Thankfully, together, Reed and Joa find a way to move forward.

It is in that moment that this book becomes delicious, but it takes most of the story for that to occur. Don’t expect any fast reconciliation in this book. It’s also something I loved about the story. A slow burn or a slow fix keeps me engaged, and Exmas offers that.

Read this book. You will not want to put it down. Be forewarned that Renshaw has fun playing with the timeline of the story, but she labels her flashbacks so well that I never felt lost. You will love this story and its ending, and you will eventually love the HEA for these characters.

Review: Delamar and Cayne’s Her Two Men in Sonoma: A CEO Romance (Total Indulgence Book 3)

I am an equal opportunity romance reader, save for paranormal stories. I’m not a fan of the ideological, supernatural types of romances. Maybe that will come with exposure, but I’m doubtful.

With that, I appreciate anything from contemporary romance to MFM/MMF romance. A few months back, I purchased my first book from writers, Dana Delamar and Kristine Cayne, Her Two Men in London, and I was hooked. A month or so later, I was gifted with an ARC of their second Total Indulgence series book, Her Two Men in Tahiti. I was hooked even further. Since Daniel and Arianna had figured into those books as ancillary characters, I was intrigued when I read the first two chapters of their most recent book, Her Two Men in Sonoma, at the end of the prior book. Arianna seemed incredibly supportive of Paige in the first book of the series, and Daniel played the overseeing CEO of Sky, the character from their second book. We never get hints in those first two books of the backstory of these two characters…until this most recent book.

In this new book, Arianna and Daniel have divorced and are struggling a year later with that decision. Arianna has no idea that Daniel is harboring a secret from his past which forced him to walk away from their marriage. He believes that Arianna will never understand and accept the gravity of his past. Enter Javier, or Javi for short. Javi and Daniel are best friends (and he’s Arianna’s childhood friend) since college who have, along with Arianna, created Total Indulgence Tours. Even after their broken marriage, Arianna and Daniel, along with Javi, have continued to grow their company and maintain their relationships, even though strife lies underfoot. As the story progresses, we grow to understand that love has existed between the three for many, many years, but they must learn to deal with the past in order to move forward into their future.

I will admit that I LOVED the second book in this series (as well as the first). The emotional depth of the characters in Her Two Men in Tahiti grabbed me and caused me to consider, not just the societal ramifications of a menage relationship, but the cultural concerns as well. In this book, the social concern is childhood sexual abuse. The authors use the story of the characters to speak on the devastating effects of this type of abuse on future relationships and personal growth. While a necessary topic to consider, I found this story thread a bit repetitive in the book. Daniel frustrated me at various points in the story. Trust me, I understand the gravity of his situation, but there was a constant self-flagellation that seemed repetitive at times. Only Arianna and Javi as characters save the book. Together, they are a power couple who seek to save Daniel from himself. Their strength as a couple saved the story for me. I wanted to love this book as much as the first two books, but it wasn’t my favorite,

That being said, I am still a HUGE fan of Delamar and Cayne, and I will continue to read their books. They create socially compelling storylines and spicy characters who heat up the bedroom. I am always intrigued by the MMF storyline because, in the real world, it seems like it would be incredibly difficult. However, if I can live it through the pages on my Kindle, I am all in.  Even though Her Two Men in Sonoma wasn’t my favorite of the series, I would still highly recommend it for other readers who LOVE this type of romance. You can never go wrong with Delamar and Cayne.

Happy Book Release Day! Hate Notes – Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward

HN cover personal page AVAILABLE NOW.jpg

HateNotesTITLE2.png

A standalone romance novel published by Mont-lake Romance

By: New York Times Bestselling Authors Vi Kee-land & Penelope Ward

Release Date: Tuesday, November 6, 2018

SYNOPSIS:

It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.

Something blue.

I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”

Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.

The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most ro-mantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.

He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from discovering the story behind his last love letter. A love letter that did not result in a happily ever after.

But that story is nothing compared to the one unfolding between us. It’s getting hot-ter, sweeter, and more surprising than anything I could have imagined.

Something new.

But I have no idea how this one is going to end . . .

Happy Book Release Day! Jana Aston – Good Time!

EXCERPT

He thinks I’m funny. And exasperating. And bossy. And beautiful, he said that I was beautiful.

It’s not the worst start in the history of starts, but I’d like to know more.

I pull out a stool and sit down at the island countertop so I can watch Vince work. It occurs to me once again what a shit wife I am. I don’t cook. I don’t give blow jobs. I haven’t asked if he needs anything dropped off at the dry cleaner. I don’t wear sexy lingerie. Maybe I should change? To be fair, the blow job thing is not my fault. I did offer that first night. I meant to yesterday but he distracted me with his tongue and that was that. Gah, I’m just the worst.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Giving you a blow job.”

“Yeah?” Vince responds easily, as if we’re talking about where the cutting board is. “Do you have a list of specific requirements for how you’d want that to happen?”

So he’s open to the idea, is what I’m hearing. Maybe he’ll want to date after the annulment and he’ll fall in love with me? It’ll make a great story for our grandchildren.

“You say that like I’m demanding.”

“You are.”

“I’m extremely easy-going! Everyone says so!” No one says that, actually. But it’s probably just because it’s never come up. It’s not as if I go around asking people if they think I’m easy-going, but if I did, they’d say yes. Probably. At least everyone except Vince would.

“You have a very easy-going way of getting your own way,” Vince states as he sets a pot of water on the stove to boil.

I suppose I can see where he might think that. That might even be a fair assessment.I’m really self-aware. I need to add that to my list of positive attributes.

“So for the blow job, can I tie you up?”

“No.” The answer is firm, his lips twitching like the question was amusing.

Humph. “Can you tie me up?”

“How are you going to give me a blow job if you’re tied up?”

Dammit! Worst. Wife. Ever. “I suppose without my hands it’d be more like you using my mouth to masturbate while I did nothing, wouldn’t it?”

“What a visual you paint, Payton.”

“You’re still welcome to tie me up though. It doesn’t have to be tradesies.”

“Tradesies,” he mutters with a shake of his head, but he’s smiling as he uncorks the wine and pours two glasses.

“So, where do you see yourself in five years, Vince?” Might as well dive in with the talking.

He looks up from rolling back his shirt sleeves, a look of confusion flashing across his face replaced with an amused narrowing of his eyes.

“Excuse me? Is this an interview?” He laughs, placing a pan on my stovetop before rummaging through my cabinets for a bottle of olive oil.

“This is serious. You’ll be old and divorced. Think about that.”

“An annulment doesn’t count as a divorce. It doesn’t count as anything.”

“Try telling that to Britney. She’s gonna have that nineteen-hour marriage on her Wikipedia page until she dies. Wikipedia, Vince. That’s forever.”

“Okay, whoa. Let’s step back a moment here.”

“Do you need a wife with benefits?” I press on, because taking a step back doesn’t sound like it will get me anywhere.

“What exactly does that mean?”

“I have health insurance. Do you need health insurance? I could add you to my plan. It’s very reasonable, adding a spouse only costs like an extra two hundred dollars a month. It’s a really good plan, too. At least that’s what Lydia told me and she works in Human Resources so she would know. I’m no benefits package expert.”

“That’s not what the term ‘with benefits’ means.”

“Listen, in this case I think it’s exactly what that means. Society is the one who turned the word ‘benefit’ into something dirty.”

“So there’d be no sex in this exchange?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. Of course there’d be sex.”

“Did you just talk yourself into a circle?”

“Maybe.” Dammit.

About the AuthorJana Aston likes cats, big coffee cups and books about billionaires who deflower virgins. She wrote her debut novel while fielding customer service calls about electrical bills, and she’s ever grateful for the fictional gynecologist in Wrong that readers embraced so much she was able to make working in her pajamas a reality.
