Review: Fawn Bailey’s Wicked Prince

Okay, I want to preface this post with a very important announcement: I love dark romance. I read it as a contrast to rom-com or contemporary romance. I have no problem being swept up in heroine kidnappings or dominations. It doesn’t bother me because I can suspend my disbelief, and I have no triggers for these types of scenarios. I’ve read Olivia Ryann’s Control and Protect series, Linnea May’s Petal series, Kelli Callahan’s Caged by Them, Penelope Sky, CD Reiss, Ashley Jade, Willow Winters, Stephanie Julian’s Indecent series, and many more. Through all of them, I suffered with the heroine and cheered the transition of the anti-hero as he found some level of redemption, even if it wasn’t the typical redemption of the romantic hero.

Even more, I enjoyed the first book in this series by Fawn Bailey, Dark Castle, albeit Olivier exasperated me as he seemed exceptionally bipolar when it came to Amber and the other contestants in his competition to find a bride.

But I struggled with Wicked Prince. I have no qualms with reading some level of dominating borderline abusive behavior of the h. However, between Bruno and Olivier in this book, it read like a roller coaster of emotions. I found myself becoming profoundly angry and annoyed with the ride on this roller coaster.

The Hs. Olivier and Bruno read as though they really don’t know what they want. One minute they want Amber; they can’t live with out her. In the next moment, she’s an afterthought. If you profess undying attachment to the h (at least, mentally), then you might want to be more consistent. And this is the problem with the characterization of these two. Additionally, they are supposed to be dominants. Yet, they constantly fight like children which left me struggling with accepting them. Quite frankly, I wanted Amber to escape and leave them, returning to her friends. She reads like a vessel and possession, but not in a way that could ever redeem either of these two.

Amber. I cheered her on when she was betrayed by Olivier and decided that she would reject him. I hoped she would take control of her sexuality and stand up to the two men. Yet, once again, she faltered. Yes. She controls her escape from the dungeon, but it takes her far too long to do so. Even more, I kept wondering why she wouldn’t demand legal representation. As she was accused of a crime, she should seek out people who could truly help her. Bruno and Olivier seem ineffective, and she accepts that. I recognize that dark romance writers often make their h timid or naive, but they tend to use that naïveté to an advantage against the H. This hasn’t happened yet in this series, and it’s disappointing. I need her to recognize her personal strengths and fight back.

What does this book have that should prompt you to read it? For one, it’s the second in a trilogy, so it is still unresolved. I’d like to think that the third book might drastically change the course of the characters. At least, I am hoping for it. Secondly, the physical connections between the characters is hot by romance standards. That seems to be the series’ point. If you love hot chemistry and $ex, then you’ll love this book. Lastly, this book leaves its readers on a massive cliffhanger that puts Amber at risk. Since the story isn’t finished, there is much that Fawn Bailey can do. I’m hoping I will feel resolved in the final book of this series.

One question that Fawn Bailey/Isabella Starling posted in her Facebook group a week ago was related to Amber’s choice in the two men. Should she choose Bruno or Olivier? At the time, I said Olivier, although I’d love to see a ménage with the three. After reading Wicked Prince, I want Amber to choose Amber. Quite frankly, Olivier and Bruno aren’t worthy of her attention.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️++

About J. Sterling

My goal is to write books that you can get lost in and stories that will leave you with a smile and a full heart. If you can forget about the real world while you’re reading and fall in love with my characters, then I’ve done my job. A lot of what I write has real-life aspects in it, but that’s what makes the stories so relatable- the fact that they could happen to anyone… and have!

I live in California with my son, Blake. If you can’t find me sitting behind a computer screen, then there’s a good chance I’m sitting in the bleachers of a baseball stadium watching him play. I love traveling to new places, meeting my readers and spending time with the love of my life, my very own second chance romance, who inspires me daily.

I know you have a million books to choose from and I am humbled, grateful and thankful each time you choose to read one of mine or tell someone else to read them. Thank you.

Cover Reveal: Brittainy C. Cherry’s Eleanor & Grey

E&G - CR banner.jpg

Eleanor & Grey, an all-new beautiful and emotional standalone from Brittainy C. Cherry is coming April 8th and we have the gorgeous cover for you!

Eleanor & Grey FOR WEB.jpg

Greyson East left his mark on me.

As the young girl who first fell for him, I didn’t know much about life. I did know about his smiles, though, and his laughs, and the strange way my stomach flipped when he was near.

Life was perfect…until it wasn’t, and when we were forced to go our separate ways, I held on to our memories, let go of my first crush, and wished for the day I’d find him again.

When my wish came true, it was nothing like I imagined.

I couldn’t have known when I took the nanny position that it would be his children I looked after, that my new boss would be that boy I used to know, that boy who was now a man—a cold, lonely, detached man.

The smile and laugh I had loved so much were gone, now distant memories. Every part of him was covered in a fresh pain.

When he realized who I was, he made me promise to do my job and my job only.

He made me promise not to try to get to know him, not to recall the memories I’d treasured all this time.

But, sometimes, I saw the boy I’d once known in his stormy eyes. I saw the Greyson who smiled and laughed, who had stolen a young girl’s heart, and there was no doubt in my mind that this boy was worth fighting for.

I was given a second chance with the one who’d left his mark on me. All I hoped was that somehow I’d leave a mark on his soul, too.

Review: J. Sterling’s Bitter Rival

When I signed up to read an ARC of Bitter Rival, I was interested in two things about the book’s blurb: (1) it is an enemies-to-lovers book and (2) it’s set in the world of wine. Now, I’m not necessarily a wine-drinker, but I love new settings in romance books, and I thought Bitter Rival would offer something interesting.

Bitter Rival is a modern day Romeo and Juliet without the deaths at the end. The main characters, Julia and James, have been raised next door to each other. Their parents (and grandparents) have held a bitter feud that, quite frankly, Julia knows nothing about the details. She is simply raised to dislike her neighbor, James. Additionally, they have competing wineries which adds to the rivalry. Unfortunately (or fortunately for romance readers), Julia and James are attracted to each other. For James, his unrequited interest in Julia remains hidden, and he’s confused as to why she seems so hostile towards him when he has shown an interest in her.

Bitter Rival an easy story. It isn’t trying to do something more. I expected it to be more angsty, and I thought, after reading the blurb, that James would be a jerk. That is not the case here. There is tension in the book, and, as a reader, you wonder how the situation will be resolved. You root for James and Julia. Well, at least, I was rooting for James. He is not a jerk. He makes it known in many ways that he is interested in a relationship with Julia. He believes her to be his soul mate. It is Julia who is the hold-out for most of the story and the genesis of the tension in the story. She also made this reader incredibly frustrated. And here’s why…

For one, she is a gifted wine creator. She is able to make wine blends that win awards. This means she could write her ticket to any winery. Yet, she remains loyal to her family’s winery to a detriment especially when her father treats her horribly. I thought she could have made better choices to allay the stress in her life. Instead, she perpetuates the rivalry, to a fault. There were many times when I felt like banging my head against a wall at her inability to see beyond the rivalry to opportunity — in her career and with James.

Thankfully, the supporting cast of characters (along with James) save the story. James’s friend, Dane, and Julia’s friend, Jeanine, lend some much-needed humor and wisdom to the story. They balance the James’s and Julia’s angry parents and Julia well.

Overall, Bitter Rival is your typical enemies-to-lovers story except both of the main characters don’t really ascribe to the typical trope. In the end, we learn from this story that we should fully understand our family histories before making choices for our own lives. I would recommend it.

Excerpt:

DAX

* * *

“Where’s my favorite girl?” I call out, entering my childhood home.

“I’m here, Uncle Dax!” my niece, Violet, hollers through the house just before her quick footsteps follow.

My parents refused to let me buy them a new house once I started putting money in the bank. Mom didn’t want the neighbors to think she and Dad thought they were better than anyone else. This means my parents, my sister, and niece, all still live in the fifteen-hundred-square-feet home I grew up in.

I did pay off their mortgage as well as my sister’s student loans before I set up a college fund for my niece, much to their dismay. But let’s be honest, it’s the least I could do for a family who’s always been there for me.

Dad refused to retire from the hardware store, but I at least got him to agree to go from full-time to part-time a few years ago. It took some aggressive bargaining, but when I’d shown him how well the account I’d started for them with my financial planner had been doing, he’d finally relented.

“Hey! I thought I was your favorite girl!” another female voice protests.

“Well, I don’t know,” I hedge. “Depends on if you made any chocolate chip cookies.”

My mother promptly swats at me with a laugh, the little crinkles at the corners of her eyes becoming more pronounced. The guys always say I resemble my mom, and even though I know they say it in more of a shit talking, you look like your mama kind of way, it’s still true. She and I have the same smile, and although her skin is darker than mine—my dad’s the odd man out in the family with fair white skin—there’s no mistaking me for being her son.

I pull her close for a hug, and she pats my back, mumbling, “I swear, you just keep getting more muscles every time I see you.” The top of her head barely reaches my shoulder, and her dark hair seems like it has more gray threaded in it each time I see her.

“Don’t give him a bigger head than he already has.”

My eyes catch sight of Violet and my sister, Ava, entering the small kitchen. Mom releases me, and Violet rushes past her mother intent on getting to me first. I bend and scoop her up in a big hug.

“Uncle Dax, I missed you.” Her whispered words wrap themselves around me.

“I missed you, too, love bug.” God, I swear, she’s growing like a damn weed lately. Once I set her on her feet, she starts talking a mile a minute.

“Oh my gosh, Uncle Dax! You’re not going to believe what happened the other day in gymnastics camp. That girl I told you about—the one who was saying my hair was weird and stuff—well, I finally had enough, and I did what you told me to do.”

All eyes are suddenly on me. Trust me when I say this is not what a man wants in this household because it normally means I’m in deep shit.

“Uh, remind me again what I told you?” I say slowly, praying to God above that I hadn’t made some idiotic, off-the-cuff comment as a joke, and she took me seriously.

Violet gives me one of those old people are so forgetful looks. “You said I could use sarcasm because most people who are mean and rude don’t understand it, and it’ll go over their head and be a beautiful inside joke for you and everyone else who doesn’t have shit for brains.”

Violet,” my mother and Ava say in unison, flashing me a stern look.

Violet grimaces. “Sorry. But I was quoting him.” Then she picks right up. “And then you said I should let it roll off my shoulders like it doesn’t bother me.” She grins happily. “Well, I did a combination of the two. And she’s totally left me alone ever since.” My niece pumps a fist in the air. “Go Team Kendrick!”

“Way to go!” We exchange a high five. Sobering, I school my face in a stern expression. “Remember not to cuss, though. It’s not ladylike.”

Her sweet face peers up at me, so adorably cute with such seriousness that it takes all my effort to not break into a smile. “How about ‘crap’?”

“Uh…” I flick my eyes to Ava, who makes a face before shrugging. “I think that one can be okay, as long as it’s not overused.”

Violet nods. “Noted.” God, this kid is such an old soul sometimes. “I’m going to practice my backflips for gymnastics some more out back.” In a flash, she’s gone.

I sag against the counter. “Man, two minutes, and I’m exhausted.”

My sister sidles up beside me and snickers. “As if Mr. Gatorade himself ever gets exhausted.”

I toss her a sharp look. “Seriously? One advertising campaign for a sports drink, and you’re giving me sh—”

“Ahem!” our mother clears her throat pointedly.

“Crap.” Mom nods in approval, and I continue. “About it?” I place a palm flat against the center of my chest, feigning sadness. “Where’s the love?”

She shoves at me playfully. “You get enough love from all your admirers.”

Mom huffs. “You need to settle down with a nice woman.”

“Speaking of a nice woman…” I press my lips thin, trying to figure out how to best tell them I decided to use a matchmaking service, but decide to throw caution to the wind. “I hired a professional,” I blurt out.

As if in slow motion, my mother turns around slowly from where she’s stirring something on the stove. My sister’s jaw goes slack. And they both gape at me.

Just the reaction a guy wants.

My mother’s expression is horrified. Not quite what I was expecting, but then again, she’s always been a spitfire.

“Dax Allen Kendrick! I forbid it!”

I rear back, confused as hell. “Why would you forbid it?”

Her jaw drops, and she gasps indignantly. “Why would I forbid it?!” She turns to my sister, her voice increasing in volume. “Why would I forbid it?!”

“Say it again, Mom. Not sure we heard you the first time,” my sister deadpans.

If my mother didn’t have a freaking wooden spoon in her hand, I’d let out the laugh aching to break free. I got to know that sucker really well through my early years, and even though I’m older, I don’t put it past my mother to come at me with that thing.

Speaking of which, my right ass cheek starts to throb in remembrance at the mere sight of that spoon.

I hold up my hands. “Calm down, Mom.” Shit. I didn’t expect this reaction. “Look, she’s great at what she does and—”

The hand holding the wooden spoon rises another inch, and I flinch in response. “Don’t you tell me what she’s great at, young man!”

I look at my sister, silently pleading for help. She merely shrugs, wide-eyed, with an I don’t pretend to understand her look.

Great. I’m left to fend for myself once again.

“Can you just put that thing”—I gesture to the spoon in her hand—“down, so I can explain?”

My mother’s lips purse like she’s just bit into the sourest of lemons. Her eyes practically spew fire at me. “Fine.” Her tone is curt. “But you’re not too old to get swatted with it, young man,” she warns with a pointed look.

My hands fly to my ass protectively, and my sister snorts. I glare at her, and she simply sticks her tongue out at me in response.

Some things never change.

“Okay, so Ivy, Becket’s wife—”

My mother’s expression instantly softens. “Such a sweet girl, that one.” Then with a stern look, she adds, “You need to find someone like that.”

I draw in a deep breath, praying for patience. “Ivy’s business partner, Darcy, runs a matchmaking service and—” At the odd expression on my mother’s face, I stop. “What’s that look for?”

“Oh, honey.” She lets out a long sigh before spinning around to tend to the saucepan on the stove.

I stare at my sister expectantly. Her lips twitch as though she’s attempting to restrain a smile. I wave her on. “Say it.”

She snickers. “Mom thought when you said ‘professional,’ you meant prostitute.”

I whip around to stare at my mother. “Are you serious?!” What the hell? “You really think I’d hire a freaking prostitute?”

“Apparently so,” my sister chimes in with a smirk.

I toss up my hands in exasperation. “I can’t believe you think I’d resort to that.”

“Well,” my sister starts, “you have been single for a while.”

“That doesn’t mean I’d hire a prostitute for fu—” Mom’s head whips around in warning, and I correct myself quickly. “For God’s sake.”

“What’s a prostitute?”

Fucking hell. Violet’s just come back inside.

“Nothing.” That’s my mother’s response.

“A person who makes bad choices.” My sister’s no-nonsense response.

“A woman who sells—” This time, I really do get swatted with the wooden spoon. As if it doesn’t sting enough against my bare forearm, I now have a line of pasta sauce on it too.

I grin and make a show of licking the sauce off my skin. Mom hates that.

She raises the spoon threateningly, and I hold up my hands in surrender. “I just want to be loved. What’s a guy have to do to get some love these days?”

“Pretty sure you already know what you have to do to get some love,” my sister mutters under her breath.

I jab an index finger in her direction and give her a sharp look. “Watch it, or I’ll tell Mom who broke that angel statue she brought home from a garage sale.”

Ava’s expression morphs into astonishment. “You swore you’d never bring that up!” Her lips curve suddenly in a devious smile. “As long as I never tell Mom what happened to that pair of booty shorts she got you for twenty-five cents.”

“What shorts?” my mother asks.

I stare at her in complete disbelief. “Seriously? You’re more worried about the hideous shorts that put my junk on display than the statue she broke?”

My mother sputters. “But you said you loved those shorts!”

I glance up at the ceiling, hoping for divine intervention, which, of course, never comes. “Mom,” I say with exaggerated patience. “The shorts were cut so high I would’ve had to wax.”

“Well, you could’ve said so,” she huffs, turning back to the stove. “They were a great deal.”

“I’m sure they were a steal for a quarter.” My sister snickers at my sarcastic response, and we burst out laughing.

Our mom’s been a fan of garage sales for as far back as we can remember. Sometimes she brings home some decent stuff, but more often than not, it ends up being some hideous “treasure.”

Hence the shorts.

“You two are gonna get it!” Mom warns, raising that infamous wooden spoon once more.

Man, it’s good to be home.

Blurb
Once upon a time, six children stumbled upon a wild place hidden deep in the moors, shrouded by secrets and fog. There we played a game among the roses and the thorns that would change us forever, that would follow us the rest of our lives. A game that ended with a hard kiss in the rain and tattered flower petals fluttering from above…

And twelve years later, we’re back.

The heir.
The dreamer.
The priest.
The genius.
The socialite.
The saint.

I’m not going to dream of a forgotten place covered in thorns every night.
I won’t be enchanted by Thornchapel and its glossy, glamorous people. I’m not going to fall in love or have my heart torn in two.

I’m not telling the truth.

Because as this place slowly tightens its coil of secrets and thorns around us, as we uncover the knotted mysteries that grow here, the six of us begin to unravel into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Fulfilling the promise we once made as children in those whispering ruins, and awakening a fate that will either anoint us or leave us in ashes…

Brooke turned out to be an amazing woman and mother. For seven years, we were the MVP’s of co-parenting—and even better friends.

That all changed when tragedy struck our makeshift family and I was faced with the terrifying possibility of losing the one woman I was quickly realizing I couldn’t live without.

About A.S. Teague

A.S. Teague enjoys the warmth of South Carolina with her husband and two daughters. The stereotypes about peach cobbler and sweet tea are not overstated. After years in the medical field, she is now enjoying every minute of being a stay-at-home mom. She loves wine, the beach, wine on the beach, and crying at Disney movies. When she doesn’t have a book in her hand, she can be found pestering her husband with pictures of animals she wants to rescue, as well as debating whether to exercise or take a nap.

Review: A.S. Teague’s The Hardest Route

I am a sucker for a sports romance. It doesn’t matter if it is football, baseball, hockey, soccer, whatever. I love it. I especially enjoy sports romance when it is more about the people in the story than the sport. Finding that balance is key. While I love sports, I don’t necessarily want the details of the sport in my book. I want the “behind-the-scenes” relationships.

A. S. Teague does this well in The Hardest Route. The story follows Griff and Brooke. They meet in Las Vegas, spend an amazing night together, and go their separate ways: Brooke back to her job as an engineer and Griff to his burgeoning NFL career. However, their one-night stand produces a baby, and this book follows them through that journey.

What I find intriguing about Griff and Brooke’s story is that they didn’t have an insta-love story. In other words, Teague doesn’t rush them into couplehood. Instead, they become parents to their daughter, and friends, and I found this refreshing. Oftentimes, in this situation, you imagine the author creating a relationship between the two. But Teague doesn’t. She grounds this story, to a degree that you can in a romance, in reality. These two do not know each other. To put them immediately into a relationship would be unrealistic and foolish. Teague grows their friendship through parenthood first, and this sets this book apart from other one-night stand baby-daddy romances.

I also love that Brooke is older than Griff. She’s a career woman, intelligent, and grounded. He’s younger, starting a new life, and he shows his youth through his inability to compromise. This dynamic sets up the fireworks of their relationship. However, it also grows them into friends, which is probably the sweetest part of this book. Again, this dynamic makes this story different.

I think the biggest issue with this story is all of its moving parts. There is enough to unpack between Griff and Brooke that the final “surprise” of the book, quite frankly, seemed unnecessary. I don’t want to spoil it for the reader, but I think it seemed tertiary to Griff and Brooke’s relationship. While I know it was meant to grow their romance (and it inspired the title for the book), it felt ancillary to the story, an after-thought.

Also, there is humor in this book in the form of Griff and Brooke’s best friends. They add a level of hilarity that adds layers to the story. And this book can be sexy, but it is another ancillary part of this book. If you’re looking for heat, this isn’t your book. Instead, Teague focuses on developing the romance between Griff and Brooke in more meaningful ways, which can be refreshing in a genre that oftentimes overdoes the heat.

I would definitely recommend The Hardest Route. It teaches us that the person who is closest to us, who really knows us as a friend, is oftentimes the one we’re meant to love forever. It suggests the friendship before love creates a stronger foundation for an eventual HEA. The Hardest Route offers a beautiful showing of friendship, devotion, and love.

Overall:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wicked Prince is NOW LIVE!!!!

From bestselling contemporary dark romance author Fawn Bailey, the highly anticipated second installment of The Dazzling Court, a dark & twisted steamy romance series.

In a land far far away, I entered a competition to win the prince’s heart. I never expected this outcome – that I would have two princes interested in my hand and my heart.

Olivier and Bruno Bellamy will stop at nothing to make me their princess. I am caught up in their battle for my body. And knowing their deepest, darkest secret, means I am the one who calls the shots.

Now I need to make a choice…

Will I pick Olivier? Handsome, dignified, and hiding deep, dark secrets, he is the one who’s wanted me from the very beginning. The one who made me fall in love at first sight, and won’t give up until I’m his property.

Or maybe I’ll go with his brother, the bast*ard prince, Bruno. Tall, dark, handsome – and oh so dangerous, Bruno is off limits, but that only makes me want him more.

As the compeition for Olivier’s heart reaches its dangerous peak, I know I have to pick betweeen them.

But the real question is…

Why choose?

Review: Sierra Simone’s A Lesson in Thorns

5 Reasons Why You Need to Read Sierra Simone’s A Lesson in Thorns

I’m a professor of writing, albeit an adjunct who spends her time facilitating the learning of introductory college writing. It is NOT glamorous. In order to do this job, I earned a Master’s in English with an emphasis in Literature and Composition. Basically, I read a LOT of books (the classics) and wrote rhetorical analyses of them. I know a little something about reading and analyzing literature.

Romance is a genre that has allowed me to quiet my analytical brain. It was necessary so I could fall in love with reading again because ten years of teaching writing had started to make me hate it. Assumedly, I thought, given my occupation and background, I needed to analyze everything and read more “high-brow” tomes. And it overwhelmed me to think about books in that way. It was disappointing. However, quickly, romance became my guilty pleasure. The more I read it, the more it allows me to relax and to be entertained in a way that makes me love reading again. In the past year, I’ve read many romances that offer the basics. There isn’t anything wrong with it. I still love them. Yet, nothing makes me more excited than to find authors who marry the romance genre with a deeper literary style. It gives depth to the breadth of romance in a way that my little literary inner self geeks out. And Sierra Simone is one of those authors. The American Camelot series was my first foray into her romances, and that series. changed. everything. At least for me.

With her newest offering, A Lesson in Thorns, my inner lit student cried and screamed and shouted for joy. This new book (and its forthcoming siblings/cousins) is a must-read for EVERY romance reader. Yes. I said it…every one of you. Here’s why…

  1. This book is romance for everyone. This is a book about love in any sense of the word. There are six characters: Auden (who I hope is named after W.H. Auden, the English-American modernist poet), St. Sebastian (Saint), Proserpina (Poe), Delphine, Rebecca, and Beckett. Each of them brings a different type of “love” to this book. If you love MMF, MM, FF, MF, etc., then you MUST read this book because Simone gives us all of it. Even more, Beckett, the priest, gives us another level of love in his efforts to contain his “zeal” which is just another type of love for life or things or emotions. At its core, this book says that “love is love” no matter the circumstance, and there is both beauty and destruction in it.
  2. I said there were six main characters in this story. I lied. There are actually 7 because Thornchapel, the family residence of Auden, is also a main character. It is the underlying essence of this book. Much like Jane of Jane Eyre being thrown into the Red Room, a room that seems to breathe and hold secrets, for punishment or sent to work at Thornfield (where noises of the place bring Rochester’s secret to life) has a setting played such a key role. All of the characters in A Lesson in Thorns are drawn to Thornchapel. They spend one summer together, and this place takes up residence in their souls to the point that characters dream of it a decade later. Thornchapel becomes one with their souls, and they cannot find themselves collectively or individually without, once again, inhabiting it.  That dynamic breathes a supernatural feeling into this book. As you read the book, you can’t help but feel the ominous nature of the setting changing the characters, while changing you the reader. It’s compelling and feels dangerous as you read.
  3. Sierra Simone’s prose is like very few other romance writers. In her Facebook group, many of the early readers noted that they needed to read this book with a dictionary. They weren’t lying. She elevates her writing. Her prose is rife with beauty and poetry. There is an elevation to it. However, she couples her words with simplicity. As you read some heady vocabulary, she might pair it with simple sentences to underscore definitive moments in the story (simple sentences are often used for emphasis). Her style is heady and raises the elegance of the genre to another level.
  4. Her imagery. Oh dear Lord, her imagery. This book is titled A Lesson in Thorns because this book is that, a lesson in the desires of its characters. There is no coincidence that Thornchapel is named that name. Each of the characters holds a secret/a desire, in this book, a thorn. These thorns, or as I saw it a connection to sin, are described as bounded within the souls of the characters. When a particular character thinks about their secret (I refuse to divulge them to you…read the book), Simone uses the image of the thorn to help us understand the secrets significance in the life of the character. Just as thorns exist with the beauty of a flower, you must endure them to admire the flower more tacitly. The flora of Thornchapel is alson described similar to the inner struggles and souls of the characters in the story: heavy and thorny. These images are overwhelming. They lend a depth and heaviness to this book that is felt in your chest as you read it. Some of the early readers talked about fear. Simone’s images create this. It’s so powerful as it intermixes with the love affairs of the story. There is so much deprivation and denial in this story, and the imagery of the thorns illustrates it profoundly.
  5. The feelings of this book overwhelm you in a way that makes this book necessary. I’ve talked about Simone’s definition of love, her characterizations, her prose, and her images. What makes this book a necessary read is the way she can take a collective memory, the collective memory of the characters to each other and Thornchapel, and turn it into nostalgia. Even more, she then uses her prose and images and characterizations and story to make you, the reader, feel the profundity of the nostalgia. Throughout the book, I had this strange feeling in my stomach and chest as though I could relate to the experience of the memory of a past summer. It overwhelms you as you read it, but in a way that reminds you that memories and unresolved feelings need resolution.

And that was the biggest connection I found to her book. Maybe I’m being too much of a former lit student here, but I’d like to think that Simone is trying to bring us a story of love, a love between a group and its members. A story of accepting our natures in a way that doesn’t need to be denied. A story of finding truth and resolution of the past so that we can move forward more intentionally in the future. There is something significant about this book and the series. And if you don’t read it, you are missing out on one of the best, most significant books of 2019.

Overall:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+++
