Release Date: March 28, 2019

Cover Design: Najla Qamber, Najla Qamber Designs

Synopsis

He bought me, but not to touch or taste. He bought me to save me, and to atone for past sins.

Handsome and mysterious, he swoops in to offer me a new life, but this is no knight in shining armor. He’s cold, hardened by his past. But there’s an inferno underneath the ice, I can feel the heat each time he looks at me—each time he gives in to the desire between us.

No matter how much I push to unleash the fire in his eyes, he shoves back harder each time. He’s merciless with his cruel words, telling me how naïve I am, how little I know of the world.

But I’m stronger than he thinks.

When we face down our demons from the past, I’ll prove which one of us was in need of saving, and which one of us is the savior.

Review: Kennedy Ryan’s Hook Shot

Available in KU

Like most of Romancelandia, I have been waiting with bated breath for Hook Shot, the final book in the Kenndy Ryan basketball universe. Her first book, Long Shot, gutted me and still holds a portion of my heart in its book hands. Block Shot continued the angst, but it empowered me as a woman, reminding me that the “daughter of a lion is still a lion.” And now, we have Hook Shot, Ryan’s newest offering. Like the other books in the series, this one deepens the love in the Hoops universe.

With Long Shot, we watched love bloom and endure through pain and trauma.

With Block Shot, we watched opposites attract and recognize the power of women in or out of love.

With Hook Shot, we receive the amalgamation of all of these stories: enduring trauma, finding personal strength through the community of women, and love.

Kennedy Ryan beautifully brings all of them together in the love story of Kenan and Lotus, and she imbues her story with hope for renewal and love.

The rainbow as a symbol plays prominently in this story. In Hook Shot, it acts as a bridge and a warning: “[a] rainbow is the bridge from Heaven to Earth,” MiMi instructs a young Lotus. However, in life, a rainbow symbolizes a fresh start, a renewal. And this symbolism is necessary to understand the significance of Kenan and Lotus’s journeys in this story. Each of them has endured a trauma, albeit the traumas are distinctly different. Nevertheless, these traumas keep each of them isolated, Kenan to his routine as an escape and Lotus to the escape of insignificant relationships. Ryan reminds us through their journeys that they need renewal and fresh beginnings to find a greater meaning in their lives. There is no meaning in a life half-lived, and both of them must cross the “rainbow” from trauma to renewal.  Ryan weaves their lives together to bring about that added depth, and it is a masterpiece.

Even more, Ryan shows us the power of women through this story much as we see in Block Shot. In that book, the understanding of this power runs through the character of Banner. In Hook Shot, Ryan illustrates this through the power of the female community, whether it be a family group or a friend group. The characters of Yari and Billie provide this power through Lotus’s work and friendship. Ryan crafts them as foils to Lotus to emphasize the depth of her trauma. Yari and Billie provide a voice of reason when Lotus struggles with her own choices. They become her friend support and, in so doing, they become each other’s strength. Similarly, Lotus’s true strength comes through her family line, and Iris represents (with Lotus) the “power of the unbroken line…[t]wo women from our lineage together. There’s power in that.” Through this line, Ryan suggests that, like Banner, the power of change comes through the inner strength of women, furthering that message from Block Shot.

And finally, the love of Kenan and Lotus is part August and Iris, part Banner and Jared. They are opposites (older man/younger woman), yet like August did for Iris, Kenan fights for Lotus. To be honest, Ryan’s portrayal of Kenan made the book for me. Granted Lotus is one of my new favorite heroines, as her internal strength is admirable. The choices she makes in the name of her love for Kenan are powerful and awe-inspiring. But it’s Kenan’s willingness to forgo his worries and hand his heart to Lotus that pulled the story together for me. KeLo’s relationship embodies the relationships of the first two books in this series, and it stands as a reminder that great love can heal all wounds.

I am going to say it now. Hook Shot is going to be a top book for 2019. It pulls together the elements of Kennedy Ryan’s other books in the Hoops series, leaving us with a beautiful story of renewal through the power of love. Yes, I am sad the series has ended; however, I hold out hope that Ryan will write us beautiful bonus chapters in the future, reminders that love overcomes anything.

Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

In love and romance,

Professor A

Nothing But Trouble by P. Dangelico

Release Date: March 26th

Nothin but Trouble_Final-high copy.jpg

Nothing But Trouble, an all new standalone Contemporary Romance by

P. Dangelico

Reagan Reynolds…

Water polo god.

Owner of a face that belongs under Wikipedia’s definition of drop dead gorgeous.

Too charming for his own good.

But most importantly––the worst driver on the planet.

No, really, I’m pretty sure his blind nana taught him how to drive.

I had no idea who he was until he almost ran me over. And frankly, I kind of wish I still didn’t because then I wouldn’t have a sprained ankle to show for it. And my leg wouldn’t resemble a boa constrictor that’s swallowed a feral pig.

Yeah, it’s that bad.

I’ve spent years saving every penny I’ve ever earned to be able to transfer to Malibu University. And now my entire future––including my scholarship––is in jeopardy.

So I either accept the help he insists on giving me, or lose everything I’ve sacrificed for.

In the meantime, I’m going to ignore the fact that we’re becoming friends.

And I’m definitely going to pretend he’s not turning into the object of my…umm, dirty fantasies.

That’s not happening.

Not even a little.

Because the minute I clapped eyes on him I knew he was nothing but trouble.

Excerpt:

Alice

A strong gust of hot air invades the car and Reagan’s hair gets ruffled. It’s been like this the last few weeks. Crazy hot winds picking up now and then. Mine is literally standing on end. I’m forced to hold it down with both hands.

“The Santa Anas,” he says as if reading my mind. I look over and find him smiling at me. “The hot wind.” He swirls his index finger.

I let go of my hair, close my eyes, and let it have its way with me. It stands instantly upright, like I stuck my finger in a socket. I’m sure I look like an idiot but it makes me laugh, a burst of pure joy emanating from my chest that can’t be contained any more than the wind can.

“Nice hair,” he mocks with a teasing smile.

“Thanks, Flipper.”

“I thought we established that it’s not a dolphin.”

“You’re not going to like me saying this, but you’re more dolphin than shark,” I happily point out. He’s always perky and upbeat, likes to socialize, loves all the attention. He’s a dolphin––whether he likes it or not.

He levels narrowed green vengeance on me, offset by a sly smile. “I’m the top of the food chain, babe. I’m all shark.”

“That’s adorable. Especially coming from someone that wears a swim cap like my nana used to wear. Except yours has those darling cinnamon buns over the ears. Like Princess Leia.”

He fights his amusement. “Those cinnamon buns are meant to protect my ears from all the rough, manly activity. And I’m tellin’ on you. I’m tellin’ all the guys you said that.”

The Jeep comes to an abrupt stop. Only then do I realize we’re parked in front of the apartment building where my study group is being held. Scanning the parking lot, I see people I recognize from class pouring out of a car.

My attention returns to Reagan and I find him watching me. His smile melts. His expression grows serious like he rarely ever is. I rake my hair down and get my fingers snagged on a few knots. Unfortunately I’m not the comb-carrying type.

Mental note: purchase comb. Crazy winds are afoot.

“Thank you for driving me.” I look for some sign of what’s going on in his mind and finding the door shut.

“What time should I pick you up?” He reaches out and I lean away, staring at his hand. “Chill, Bailey. You have a piece sticking up.”

“Oh…okay.” He’s trying to be helpful and I treat him like he’s a festering case of the bubonic plague. How embarrassing.

I lean in and he sets about gently brushing down each and every one of my stray hairs, so gently I can barely feel him picking apart the knots. I can feel his breath on my skin. Fresh from a shower, I can smell his shampoo. My scalp tingles and goose bumps break out on my forearms. Lord give me strength.

About P. Dangelico:

Dangelico loves romance in all forms, cuddly creatures (four legged and two), really bloody sexy pulp, the NY Jets (although she’s reconsidering after this season), and to while away the day at the barn (apparently she does her best thinking shoveling horse crap). What she’s not enamored with is referring to herself in the third person and social media so don’t expect her to get on Twitter anytime soon. Oh, and although she was born in Italy, she’s been Jersey Strong since she turned six.

Blog Tour: J. Kenner’s Shattered with You

Read my review here.

SWY BT BANNER.jpg

Shattered With You, the first in the all-new Stark Security series of standalones, from New York Times bestselling author J. Kenner, is available now!

SWY_ebook_1707x2500

With his lethal skills and criminal connections, former British agent Quincy Radcliffe has fast become a key asset at the newly formed Stark Security. But Quincy isn’t the man he appears to be.

When the woman whose body he once worshipped and whose heart he broke pleads for his help, Quincy knows he must either turn his back on her or risk revealing his dark secrets to the one woman who can—and will—tear open his old wounds.

For years, struggling actress Eliza Tucker has tried to forget the decadent weeks she shared with Quincy Radcliffe. His smoldering good looks had drawn her in, while his British charm had enchanted her. But it was the wildness of his seduction and the ferocity of his passion that captured her. She’d given herself to him—and he’d shattered her like glass when he’d walked away.

Now, he’s the only person who can help find her missing sister. She’ll use him because she has to. She’ll pay any sensual price he demands. But she won’t fall for him again.

Excerpt

“I think it’s time we get you home.”

“Yes, please.” My pulse pounded in my throat. Hell, it pounded between my thighs. With each moment that passed, I was more and more turned on. I blamed the wine—it’s definitely my aphrodisiac of choice—but those lovely grapes weren’t entirely responsible for this sweet longing. On the contrary, that was all the man.

A man who took my hand and very gingerly helped me down the narrow stairs to the street, where he hailed a cab. “I’ll have to remember you’re a cheap drunk,” he said, his hand sliding down to cup my bottom. I bit my lower lip and leaned into it, then moaned with satisfaction as he nuzzled my neck. “That’s valuable information to store away.”

“If that’s the kind of information you want, I’ll tell you anything. Just don’t stop doing that.”

“Ah, but I have to. Your chariot awaits.”

He stepped around me, leaving me bereft from the sudden lack of contact. He opened the door like a perfect gentleman, then stepped back, as if to close it, rather than sliding in beside me.

“Are you getting in on the other side? I can slide over.”

“You’re going home alone,”he said, and my entire body went cold from the giant bucket of rejection he’d just dumped all over me.

“I—what? Why?” I frowned. “I thought you were buying me breakfast. I thought we were going to—” I closed my mouth because under the circumstances I really wasn’t going there.

“You thought I was going home with you. That I was going to kiss you. That I was going to pull you so close your breasts were crushed against me, and your ass was tight in my hands.”

“I—Quincy…” I shot a mortified look at the driver, who was sitting like stone, his hands glued to the steering wheel as he looked straight ahead.

“Hmm,”Quincy said, then leaned over and handed the driver a ten-pound note. “Sorry to keep you waiting. This should cover the inconvenience.”And then, as if the delay was the only thing odd about this situation, he turned back to me and said, “That would be my very great pleasure, Eliza.”

“But. Wait. What?” I wasn’t sure if it was the wine or the shock, but he was making no sense.

He put a hand on the roof and leaned in.

“You’re dangerous, Eliza. You and me, we’re a lot alike.”

“That’s bad?”

“I told you. It’s dangerous.”

“Oh. I see.” I swallowed. And told myself not to cry. I didn’t know him well enough to cry. Which begged the question of why tears were pooling in my eyes. “Well, it was—I mean, I had a nice day. Thank you. It, ah, it was really nice to meet you.” Bastard.

His mouth twitched, and for a moment I feared I’d said that out loud.

“Is that a brush off?”

“What, no. Wait—I thought you were brushing me off.”

“Do you want me to?” Again with that tiny smile.

“No, and you’re teasing me. What the hell, Quince?”At that, he laughed outright. “Now I know.”

“What?”

“If you and I spend much time together—and I certainly hope that we will—when you call me Quince it’s because I’m in trouble.”

I tilted my head and crossed my arms in a display of irritation. And I was irritated. But I was also hopelessly, giddily relieved. “Fine. You’re in trouble. Don’t scare me like that. You acted like you just wanted to send me on my way.”

“I’ll tell you what I want,” he said, bending lower and speaking softer. But not so soft the driver couldn’t hear.

“I don’t just want to go home with you. I don’t simply want to fuck you. I want to claim you, Eliza. I want you to surrender completely. To give me your trust entirely.”

“I don’t understand. I don’t know what that means.”

“I think you do. I want control.” He brushed my lips with the pad of his free hand. “To take you how I want you. In the back of a cab like this. In your bed. Tied down. On your knees. I’ll give you pleasure, Eliza. More than you can imagine or have experienced.”

“You can’t know that.”

“I can, and I do.” He hesitated a moment, his eyes burning into me. “I can’t promise to save you from whatever darkness is inside you—only you can do that. But there are shadows in your eyes, and I want to be the one to bring back some light.”

Excerpt:

Shelby shut the door with a click and peered over at me. “What are you writing? If it’s permission to use the feather duster as a sex toy, the answer is no. Unless you buy your own, but if you haven’t figured out where the laundry room is yet, I doubt you’ll find where to buy one.”

She was as funny as a car crash, this one.

“Hilarious,” I drawled. “No, I’m making amendments as I go. I added a new rule.”

“You added a new rule?” She raised one dark eyebrow and walked over, hovering over me. “All right, what is it?”

“Decent clothes must be worn. Do you know how many times I wake up early on a morning to open the gym and find you basically in your underwear in the kitchen?”

“Basically in my underwear? Who are you seeing in the kitchen? I wear shorts and a tank top at the very least.”

“Yes, but the shorts barely cover your ass, and you’re sure as hell not wearing a bra.”

She paused, eyes glittering as she said, “And why are you looking at my ass and my boobs?”

That was an excellent question.

“Because there’s nowhere else to look!” I rushed out before my stupid cock could get any ideas. “Look, waking up in the morning can be challenging for a guy.”

She stared at me.

“I don’t need to get up for a coffee with… you know.” I motioned to my groin. “And see you half-clothed.”

She flicked her hair over her shoulder and walked to the kitchen, turning her back to me. “Why does it matter? I’m your best friend. I hardly think your little friend is remotely interested in whether or not I’m wearing a bra.”

Yeah, well, he is.

“Fine. If I have to wake up and see your perky nipples prancing around the kitchen, I’m going to stroll around in my underwear so you can get a good view of my morning glory.”

She spun, lifting up a finger. Her cheeks were flushed, and she had to swallow before she could speak. “My nipples do not prance. They are not horses.”

I grinned.

“Also, I have no desire to have anything to do with your morning erection, much less get a good view of it, thank you very much.”

“Have I told you that you’re cute when you blush?”

“Have I told you that you’d be a cute dead guy?”

I laughed, leaning back on the sofa. “C’mon, Shelbs. We need to respect each other’s privacy. You don’t want to see my cock hard over your breakfast, and I don’t want to see your nipples standing to attention when I make a coffee.”

She sighed. “Why did I ever let you move in again?”

“Because I was going to be homeless and you’re the best friend ever?”

“Mm.”

“Don’t romanticize this. Don’t romanticize me. I’m not some hero you dreamed about fucking you slowly.”

Do you love an “alpha-hole?” You know the guy. The one who is decidedly emotionally unavailable due to some type of trauma in his past. This, unfortunately, has created a divide in him: he wants to help others but his inability to connect emotionally with anyone keeps him alone, distant. One minute, he shows compassion and concern, and the next minute, he humiliates the heroine in a way that could be soul-crushing. If you like this type of guy, then you definitely want to read Fiona Cole’s Savior.

If you’re like me and you like to read this type of male character, then you know the attraction to watching his evolution. Erik, the main H in this book, embodies this alpha-hole well. If you could see my notes on this book, you would read all the times that I wanted to reach through my book and strangle him, as he intimidated and, quite frankly, sexually harassed Alexandra, the h of this book. He places her on his emotional rollercoaster, straps her in, and forces her to endure his dips and highs. From the minute they meet, he protects her, albeit he shames her in her choices. And he continues to protect and care for her, all while pushing her away because he is emotionally broken. When you encounter an Erik in a book, you know that the h, in this case Alexandra, will bring him to his knees. However, she must summon the depths of her strength to do so. In this book, Alexandra impressed me the most.

The character of Alexandra should be broken. Her mother died of a drug overdose when she was young, her sister is a drug addict with no interest in helping Alexandra survive, and she is impoverished in a way that I have not read in a romance novel. Most in her situation would give up. Not Alexandra. She devises a plan to earn money. This ultimately puts her in Erik’s path and in his life. Once there, while she is no longer living a life of poverty, she must endure Erik’s emotional poverty and his outbursts towards her. I’ll be honest. If it was me, I would have given the jerk the finger early in the book. However, Alexandra, in her strength, stands firm and accepts his unkindness. In fact, she pushes back against him, and she ultimately saves him from himself. She tells him “…[y]ou saved me. You’re my savior.” The reality of this book is that Alexandra saves Erik; she is the true savior of this story.

Fiona Cole has quickly become one of my favorite authors. Her books are emotion and message and hot $ex combined together in a delicious stew of romance. When I read one of her books, like Savior, I know I will feel: angst, lust, and joy combined together. Savior is much the same. It’s a reminder that, in enduring trauma, love will ultimately save us from ourselves, if we allow it.

“I’ve wanted this for so long. You make me feel safe. You take the women you rescue to Haven, but you’re my haven.”

Review: Ashley Jade’s The Devil’s Advocate

To begin, The Devil’s Playground is a must read duet. If you haven’t yet read, the first book in the duet, The Devil, you can get it here: https://www.amazon.com/Devil-Devils-Playground-Duet-ebook/dp/B07KJF27GL/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=The+Devil%E2%80%99s+Advocate+Ashley+Jade&qid=1553640800&s=gateway&sr=8-2

Even more, you should buy these two books immediately. The Devil’s Advocate, the second book in the series, is everything promised by the first book: angsty, exorbitant in its storytelling, and sexy, incredibly sexy.  Where The Devil left off, DA started right up. There is a little bit of background, but Ashley Jade launches her readers right into the heart of the story. She doesn’t give us a chance to catch our breath. She throws pitch after pitch at you, so much so, that you cannot put the book down. This was the second ARC I read in a weekend. The first ARC I read was incredible, but I found myself dozing off (yes, it was the end of the night and I was tired), and I had no qualms putting the book down. With The Devil’s Advocate, there was no shutting my eyes or closing my Kindle. It was “full steam ahead” until I hit the end. And I was not disappointed.

There is much to love about this book. I am not going to talk about the story (read it!), and I’m going to talk very little about the characters (read them!). What I love about The Devil’s Advocate is that Ashley Jade owns her characters. She doesn’t take the easy way to the end. Instead, she walks us carefully through the journeys of her main characters, and she helps them fully realize their place in the story. This story is dark; it’s incredibly sensual; it’s fiery; and it’s everything you crave in a darker romance. For much of the story, I don’t think we’re supposed to love several of the characters, and the way in which Jade makes us feel shows the intelligence of her writing. She carefully crafts the characters in a way that is meant to manipulate our feelings and thoughts about the characters. As she does so, she allows them to drive the story. And they do.

This is the reason I couldn’t put it down. The story moves. It’s full of dialogue and action and moments that keep us fully engaged.

What I loved most in this story is the journey of its characters in their pursuit of revenge. Without revealing anything, there are characters who change and grow and become more than they did in The Devil in a way that reminds us that all is never as it truly seems. That we can be more than our beginning and middle.  For someone like me who adores characterization, this made me fall in love with the story, even when the story itself was painful to read.

The mark of a great romance is its ability to make me feel fully. If I feel extreme anger or angst or joy or lust, then I know I am reading a masterpiece of romance. If you relate to this, then you will find the same masterpiece that I did in The Devil’s Advocate.
