✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 3 + ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Review of Vivian Wood and Amelia Wilde’s Wicked Games ✍🏻

Overall Rating: 3 + ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Can two people from two very different backgrounds find love? Even more, can they find it while entrenched in the aftermath of a mysterious death? These are the questions of Vivian Wood’s and Amelia Wilde’s newest book, Wicked Games, released today, June 4th.

This story follows Emily and Wolf, two very different people. Emily is a foster child who has grown up in poverty. She has worked very hard to achieve her dream: attend a prestigious school like Campbell College. Her life has revolved around achievement as a means to overcome her impoverished lifestyle. In contrast, Wolf Astor comes from a storied, legacy family at Campbell College. His family is wealthy, and they have expectations for his future. Their differences are highlighted from the start of the story, and it causes much of the initial strife between them, even though they are seriously attracted to each other. Their strife is set in another part of the story of Wicked Games: the death of Wolf’s friend, Asher, both of whom are part of a secret society, the Skulls and Thorns. Wolf’s attraction to Emily causes his distance from her initially because he is trying to keep her safe from the danger surrounding the Skulls and Thorns. Unfortunately, his attraction to her is too much, and he makes decisions that put both of them in danger. Who killed Asher? Can Wolf protect Emily from the killer, or will his interest in her lead to her demise? Even more, will Wolf and Emily find their HEA as they come from two very different worlds? Wicked Games tries to answer all of these questions.

I’ve been a fan of Vivian Wood for some time. I read her dark romances (you can read my reviews of them on my blog, Professor Romance on WordPress), and I loved her characterizations and the ensuing drama of those books.

And I love New Adult romances. I’ve recently read several of them, and they take me back to the time in my life when I was the age of the characters. Ah memories…

However, I struggled with Wicked Games. But let me tell you what I loved about it first:

  1. I love the camaraderie of the women who surround Emily, namely Cassandra. Yes, there are some “mean girl” moments. I mean, Emily is attending a university of the wealthy, and she is not a woman of means. It is bound to be an issue in this type of story. However, Wood and Wilde give her women who support her and help her adjust. The last chapter of this book is lovely as they surround with love and help her realize her place at Campbell College. It’s a fitting end to Emily’s story.
  2. I do think Wolf and Emily have great readable chemistry. It’s very clear, and it makes for some lovely $exual tension. Isn’t that what we all love to read in a romance?
  3. I think the romantic suspense part of the romance keeps the reader engaged. Wilde and Woods don’t give away the killer too soon in the story, and they build up to it so that the reader stays engaged. It is a surprise when it is revealed. I’m sure readers will figure it out sooner than later, but I don’t think the secret is too obvious.

Now, I had a few struggles with Wicked Games, and this is the reason I gave it my rating:

  1. While Emily and Wolf have great chemistry, there are so many moments of confusion within their story. Their internal thoughts oftentimes don’t match their actions. Normally, I would give the author a bit of leeway on it, but there were too many inconsistencies for me.
  2. I didn’t see Emily’s distinction between Wolf and Max. Quite frankly, she could have ended up with either one of them, and this reader would have been fine with her decision. When I read a love triangle, I want there to be a distinctive forerunner. I don’t believe Woods and Wilde built that distinction enough, at least that’s my read of it.
  3. I thought Emily gave up her V- card way too easily. For someone who had so much internal fortitude throughout much of the story, that action did not match her personality.
  4. There were still so many questions in the story. Yes, there is an extended epilogue with Wolf and Emily, but it creates more questions than answers. The ending of Wicked Games, while sentimental for Emily, left so many questions about Wolf. It wasn’t fulfilling in terms of the overall story.

Wicked Games is a New Adult romantic suspense with a HEA for Emily and Wolf. I have to be honest, though. I wanted to like it more. It is set to have all of the elements of a strong romantic suspense: mystery, intrigue, and $exual chemistry. Overall, I liked Emily and Wolf, but I’m not sure that I loved their story. I think I simply needed a bit more development.

In love and romance,

Professor A

✍🏻 Happy Release Day, Kendall Ryan! The Two-Week Arrangement is LIVE now! ✍🏻

A steamy romance about a sexy (but emotionally broken) single dad and the smart, driven (doesn’t take no for an answer) intern who makes him feel things he has no business feeling.

About The Two-Week Arrangement

Dear Sexy AF Intern,

I know you don’t particularly care that I’m the CEO of this company, and you’re just an intern. I also know you’re not impressed by my power or my wealth, and that’s fine.

You think you’ve got me all figured out from working alongside me for two weeks, but you don’t know me. Not really.

You don’t know that I’m a single dad to twin toddlers, or that those two little girls matter more to me than this entire hotel chain.

I’m not interested in starting something deep and meaningful, but what I am interested in is the way your body reacts to mine when we’re in the same room. You probably assume the concentration on my face is work-related, when in reality, I’m figuring out which I want more–to nail you against the wall, or to bend you over my desk.

While you’re too disciplined to act on it, I’m not. And the night you stepped into my limo, all bets were off.

Pulling my two heavy textbooks for this class out of the stack too, I arrange everything nicely. Just as I am getting my brand new pencils ready, I am startled by a loud bang. My desk mate drops his books on the countertop and sits down,
looking at me askance.
I startle to realize that it’s the blond Greek god I ran from only yesterday. Tall and
broad-shouldered, he wears his black denim and dark blue tee shirt incredibly
well. He knows it too, judging by his posture. He perches on his stool and
crosses his arms, expectant. Perfectly unkempt sandy blond hair, dark brows
spread wide over the darkest blue eyes I’ve ever seen, a patrician nose, two
incredible cheekbones, and the most expressive lips…
This guy is fucking hot, excuse my French.
Which are currently smirking at me. I knew hot guys back home in Prineville. Mostly I avoided them, truth be told. But this guy is on another level. He is so
dazzling that he could work in television… and bad tv just so happens to be my weakness.
Being around this guy is enough to make me rethink the bright yellow tee shirt dress I am wearing. I want more than anything to tug the hem down and smooth my hands over my black tights, but I don’t.
Instead I blush, fumbling to introduce myself. Sticking my hand straight out and tossing my messy blonde hair back, I try for an authoritative voice. “I’m Emily Danes.”
At the front of the classroom, the professor clears his throat, ready to start
talking. My eyes dart to him, but then he reaches for his bunch of tissues
again. Glancing back to my partner, I see him eye me up and down in a totally
unsubtle way.
At last, he leans forward and shakes my hand. His skin against mine is hot. I bite my lip, refusing to let a little thing like instant animal attraction do me in.
“I’m Wolf,” he says, his voice low and gravelly. He looks me over once more. Then he arches a brow, his smirk deepening. “Did you find all of your panties last night?”
My cheeks instantly go the exact color of a ripe tomato. I lick my lips and frown.
What am I supposed to say to that?

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 + Star Review: L.B. Dunbar’s Wine & Dine ✍🏻

Overall Rating: 4 + ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wine & Dine is the latest offering from L.B. Dunbar. This book from her 40’s and over group of books brings us Garrett and Dolores. Dolores is the sister of Denton, the main H from her previous book, Second Chance, the book that launched my admiration for Dunbar. Wine & Dine is the fifth book of the Sexy Silver Foxes/Former Rock Stars series. And I am in love.

I first read Dunbar with Second Chance. In that book, I fell easily in love with Denton and Mati (read my review here). And to be honest, Dolores seemed like a “beige” character, blending into the background of the book. When Denton tells her to leave town (to stay at his house in California) and get away from the heaviness of her life, I didn’t really think much about it. Until Wine & Dine. Now, I am a bigger fan of Dolores’s than I am of Denton’s.

On some level, as a reader (especially one over 40), you connect with Dolores. She’s reached a point in her life where she has become reflective. What has she accomplished? Why is she at this point in her life where she feels alone and forgotten? Life has beaten Dolores down, and she wears that in her soul. As a reader, you cannot help but empathize with her struggle: a struggle to find more meaning in her life, to stop settling for the dregs given her by others. And it was this realization that connected me to her. My heart bled for her throughout this book because her pain was palpable and real.

Oftentimes, we read romance to escape. The H and h deliver us, through their stories, from our day-to-day lives. With Wine & Dine, the book acts as a bit of a reflection for a certain population of reader, and for me, this connected me more deeply to the characters. When Dolores experiences pain, I experienced pain. When she finds connection with the most unlikely of men, Garrett, I felt excitement for her. Dolores is that “every woman” type of character that you simply can’t help but fall in love with.

In contrast, Garrett is the prototypical “player.” He has no interest in settling down. A confirmed bachelor, Garrett plans to live his life, building his business and finding his dream in retirement. Until Dolores enters his life, Garrett is happy to share his bed with a variety of women, as long as there are “no strings attached.” Again, until Dolores. Then, the “tin man” begins to find his heart again, as he recognizes a bit of a kindred soul in her.

This story is a seemingly opposites-attract romance. Garrett the player and Dolores the woman with a dry soul don’t seem destined together…until they are. And Dunbar builds couples with such angst and fire and soul that you can’t help but connect with them.

Even more, Dunbar makes some keen stylistic choices with her book. She uses The Wizard of Oz as an allegory for her H and h. Garrett calls Dolores Dorothy as she traverses a different world than the one she has fled from, and he calls himself the Tin Man because he has no heart. Except…that Garrett has the bigger heart of the two. As the reader, once you realize that Garrett’s mask as a player is simply his guard wall, you cannot help but fall in love with him. Every time, he thinks or murmurs “don’t leave” to her, my heart broke for him a little. Dolores fills something in him that he never realizes until she enters his life. It’s this epiphany that makes this story special. These two people who don’t realize they can be loved find it in each other. And the story is glorious.

When I first read Second Chance, I’ll be honest; I wasn’t sure that I would like a 40+ romance. However, Dunbar creates these characters regardless of age that you can’t help but fall in love with them. Garrett is still the requisite playboy millionaire; Denton is the former rockstar turned model/businessman. It doesn’t matter that they are pushing 50. They are still hot and fun to read. And Mati and Dolores are attractive women dealing with real-life situations that Dunbar’s readers find in their own lives. This is the gold in her stories. Like I said, I wasn’t sure about these romances, but L.B. Dunbar won me over easily. She has become one of my newest favorite writers.

Read Wine & Dine. You won’t want to put it down, and your heart will sing for Garrett and Dolores.

In love and romance,

Professor A

L.B. Dunbar has been
accused of having an over-active imagination. To her benefit, this imagination
has created over twenty novels, including a small-town world (Sensations
Collection), rock star mayhem (Legendary Rock Star series), MMA chaos (Paradise
Stories), rom-com for the over forty (The Sex Education of M.E. and After
Care), and a suspenseful island for redemption (The Island Duet). Her alter ego, elda lore, creates magical romance through mythological retellings (Modern
Descendants). Her life revolves around a deep love of reading about fairy
tales, medieval knights, regency debauchery, and strong alpha males. She loves
a deep belly laugh, a strong hug, and an occasional margarita. Her other loves
include being mother to four grown children and wife to the one and only.

Noah Becker is nothing but trouble.

That’s what Mama told me when I was a kid, kicking his pew in church and giggling at the games we’d play. It’s what the town said when his father died and the Becker brothers went wild.

And it’s on repeat in my mind the day I walk into the whiskey distillery where he works to buy a wedding gift for my fiancé.

He’s trouble.

Dirty, sweaty, rude trouble.

No matter how many times I repeat it, I can’t escape Noah in our small Tennessee town. And the more I run into him, the more he infuriates me. Because he sees what no one else does.

He sees me—the real me.

The me I’m not sure I’m allowed to be.

I’m Ruby Grace Barnett, the mayor’s daughter. Soon to be a politician’s wife, just like Mama and Daddy always wanted. Soon to fulfill my family’s legacy, just like I always knew I would.

Until the boy everyone warned me about makes me question everything, like whether the wedding I’m planning is one I even want.

Everyone said Noah Becker was nothing but trouble.

If only I had listened.

A stand-alone, contemporary romance.

About Kandi:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

Logan Ward doesn’t want any more women in his life.
Being a football player and legal guardian to his four younger sisters means his playbook is full. However, one of them just landed in the hospital, which gives his brother the shot he needs to challenge Logan for custody.

Legal counsel says there’s only one thing Logan can do—find himself a wife.

Paige McKinney doesn’t always think things through.

Like walking away from her modeling career without a thought of what might come next. She really doesn’t think it through when she proclaims herself Logan’s fiancé at the hospital, simply because the sexy—albeit grumpy—football player forgot his cell phone at a party and security won’t let her pass. It’s not her fault it was overheard by the worst possible person.
A bargain is struck, and a fake marriage is the perfect solution. But the simple solution creates a whole new problem: they’re not as different as they seem. The reluctant groom has fire inside him, and his impetuous bride is about to light the match.

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

I do care that he’s doing it six feet away from me behind a gaudy velvet curtain—making him my competition in this year’s kissing contest.

Why do I care, you ask? Because I’ve had an unfortunate crush on the insufferable idiot since I was sixteen years old, but I also know it’s never going to happen.

He’s the Creek Falls bachelor to die for, and I’m the Creek Falls raccoon lady who puts peanut butter sandwiches out for them every night.
