✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Karla Sorensen’s The Marriage Effect ✍🏻

“Paige and I were the same. Whatever fire burned inside her, I had it in me too. I’d just never met anyone who made me want to let the flames consume me. Who made me want to see how hot they could burn, what heights they could reach, what we could reach together.”

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do you love a bold, sassy, straight-shooter type of heroine? The one who flusters the hero simply by being herself? The type of heroine who causes the hero to stretch himself beyond his comfort zone, but who burns his soul with his attraction to her?

Then, you must read Karla Sorensen’s The Marriage Effect.

This book seems like an “opposites attract” story. However, the more you read Logan and Paige, the more you realize they are more alike than different. Sorensen’s genius with this story is the way in which she makes us initially think they are more different than alike, but we quickly come to realize they are one in the same person. They simply handle their emotions in different ways.

The story follows Logan, a veteran safety for the Washington Wolverines, and Paige, the best friend of the owner of the Wolverines and former super-model. In many ways, Paige is a bit of a cheerleader of sorts as she is a constant fixture with the Wolverines organization, although she has no distinct title. One night, Logan finds his family in a precarious situation, and his best option is marriage. Like Logan, Paige has found herself with the problem of needing to be married to inherit her great-aunt’s money. In one moment, they decide to marry each other in order to resolve their problems. While seemingly different in personality, from the outset, Paige and Logan are physically drawn to each other. Unfortunately, acting on the attraction, even as a married couple, may problematize their relationship, as it is meant to be temporary, not permanent. As the days and weeks pass, Paige grows closer to Logan’s nieces, of whom he is a guardian, and the lines become blurry between the two. Will Logan and Paige find a happily-ever-after, or will they walk away from each other at the end of their commitment?

The Marriage Effect is the third book in Sorensen’s Washington Wolverines series (I believe it is the final one for this series), and it is my favorite for several reasons:

  1. Logan and Paige’s Chemistry. These two seem so very, very different, yet they are like two magnets attracting each other. I’ll be honest. There were many times when I wanted to reach into my book and smack Logan upside the head. Yes. Paige has a tendency to act first, think later; it’s her natural disposition. Given this, it makes sense that Logan, who carefully plots his life due to his guardianship of his nieces, would make the mature decision to avoid a physical relationship with Paige. He worries that it will complicate everything. However, this man takes control too far. There were times when my heart hurt for Paige as he avoided her in order to protect himself. This is the first way in which Paige and Logan, while seemingly different, were very much alike. When confronted with feelings of any kind, they avoid them by either running or staying away. Sorensen shows us how people can carry the same fear and passion, but handle them in a different manner. I was thankful when Logan finally acknowledged his deep attraction to Paige, as Sorensen built this tension which almost overflows the story.
  2. Paige. In the first two books of this series, Paige, while the “crazy one,” is the voice of reason with both Allie and Ava. She speaks the words they need to hear. This same voice finds its way into the lives of Logan’s nieces, Molly, Lia, Claire, and Isabel. In fact, the most poignant moment in the story involves Lia, Logan’s emotionally stoic niece. It was powerful in that it shows Paige’s strength at reaching into people’s souls. Sorensen shows us through Paige that our inner strength can be different than our outer reactions. And I loved her for that. Paige is also the comic relief of this story, along with her friend Allie. Every time there is a potentially serious story moment, Sorensen puts words in Paige’s mouth to alleviate the tension of the story. Even more, she continues to be the voice of reason much as she was in Allie and Ava’s stories.
  3. Logan. I think one of my favorite revelations of Sorensen’s book is the fact that Logan is a safety. It’s a position of defense on the field, and its name best describes Logan. He is THE safest character of this book. He is dependable, thoughtful, caring, stoic, and carries an internal strength that people rely on. That Sorensen would give the safest person in the book this position on the field reads like a metaphor for his life. His quiet, unassuming spirit is a reminder to us all that we can make grand gestures quietly without the fanfare, and there is a beauty in it. “I was me with her. The unfiltered me.”
  4. Sorensen’s Style. If you have never read one of Karla Sorensen’s books, then you have missed out. There is an ease to her storytelling. I read this book in one day because (1) the story is engaging, (2) the characters developed beautifully over the pages, and (3) her words flow onto the page. You find yourself wrapped in her images and details and characters that you don’t want to put the book down. At least, that is the case for me. I often say about myself, as a reader, that I gobble/eat books with relish. Sorensen makes gobbling her stories easy. They pull me in and keep me there, making me grieve when her books end.

If, after reading this review, you do not realize how much I loved this book, then you missed it. I am sad that The Marriage Effect is the last of the Washington Wolverines stories. Maybe Karla Sorensen will change her mind in the future. However, she has promised a new series, one I am incredibly excited about. If they become what I imagine them to be, then this reader will be reading Sorensen stories well into the future.

“And if she walked away at the end of this, when her role in our life was fulfilled, I’d never be able to forget it. It was the knowledge that I’d crave this feeling until the day I died. Crave her. There might be a hundred women who could manage in our life. But she was the one who fit us perfectly.”

Well, let’s see … I’m a wife and a mother. If the things that I write bring a smile to someone’s face, then I’ve done my job. I am obsessed with Outlander (both the books and the show). I’m almost exclusively a romance reader, which means some people will never consider me a literary snob. If I could meet one historical figure, it would be Jane Austen. I received my Bachelors in Public Relations and worked in health care marketing before I had my babies. I hate Twitter. I do it, but I hate it. Also, if you want to get on my good side, bring me wine and I’ll love you forever.

28 Dates - Teaser 4 AN.jpg

Excerpt:

She nods against my chest and mumbles something I can’t
understand since her face is smashed to my coat. I lean back,
brushing hair off her face.
“What was that?”
Her lips pull to one side, and then she nibbles on her bottom lip. “I
asked if you wanted to come in.”
Fucking hell. She’s killing me. My hands are at the sides of her
face. “You’re drunk.”
“I’m not that drunk.”
If I wanted to be any other guy for her, hell, even how we used to
be, the answer would be so easy. My dick already thinks the
answer is obvious. I’m hard as a rock just from hugging her and
getting to hold her for the first time in so long.
“I can’t, Caitlin.”
She blinks and looks away, frowning. “I figured. Of course you
don’t.”
“Hey.” I pull her back and bend down so I’m close to her. So damn
close I could easily press my lips against her, slide my tongue into
her mouth, feel her small but strong fingers dig into my hips.
Visions and ideas of what I want to do to her body flash in my
mind so quickly I groan. “I can’t go inside with you, honey. I don’t
want to go back to what we used to have. You mean too much to
me.”
She closes her eyes, and when she opens them again, any hope or
emotion is gone. “I understand.”
She doesn’t. Caitlin can’t have any clue of what she means to me
or what I want from her, and the time for this conversation is not
when she can barely stand. But soon, very soon, because there’s no

way I can continue this charade for much longer—especially if it
means seeing her prance into Dirty’s with more guys.
Before I know it, she’s on her tiptoes, and her lips brush against
mine. I inhale the sweet scent of her perfume, and it’s impossible
to deny her.
My hands yank her to me and I step backward, pulling her into her
apartment. The door slams closed behind us, and her back is
against it. She’s already rolling her hips, and I’m swallowing her
groans as she takes mine, accepting my tongue that I slide against
her lips.
And fucking hell in a handbasket. She’s fire and ice and even
drunk she’s still the best damn kisser. It’s the kind of kiss that boils
my blood and shoots desire straight down my spine.
I pull back, breathless. “We can’t,” I say, although I’m gasping and
my hips have her pinned to the door. “I can’t do this with you,
Caitlin. Not like this.”
With secrets and uncertainties.
I press my head against her forehead even as her hands slide to my
waist. “I miss it,” she says, and it’s so sweet, so sad and faint, I
want to fall to my knees and explain everything, carry her to bed,
and make it all better.

✍🏻 Professor Romances 4 ⭐️ Review: Stacey Lynn’s 28 Dates ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I know that I have promoted for Stacey Lynn before, but prior to 28 Dates, her newest book, I hadn’t read her books. I am always looking for new authors. I simply love romance books, and finding new books by new authors makes my week, especially if I enjoy their voice.

28 Dates is the story of Jonas and Caitlin. From the outset, we understand that Caitlin and Jonas have a “friends with benefits” relationship. They have engaged in this type of relationship for a couple of years, and, seemingly, it has satisfied both of them. Until it doesn’t. Jonas asks for a date, and Caitlin pulls back, not wanting any further commitment. This devastates both of them, and they choose to be strictly friends, albeit strained ones.

Enter Trey, Caitlin’s friend. He is a guru app developer who creates an app that seeks to pair people in relationships, not one-night “hook-ups.” Caitlin is Trey’s personal assistant and business support, and as it has been several months since ending her FWB relationship with Jonas, Trey asks her to test the app for him. While her opinion hasn’t changed about relationships, she is still a little broken about Jonas, so she agrees to help Trey. Unbeknownst to Caitlin, Jonas too cannot move beyond his time with Caitlin. While he attempted to date someone else, he cannot forget Caitlin to move on; she is his standard. When he finds out about Caitlin’s agreement withTrey, Jonas asks Trey to be included in her app experience, as a way to win her back. Will Jonas finally get his girl? Will Caitlin accept him on a second chance? Or will she find love with someone else on one of her dates?

There are many, many aspects of 28 Dates that I loved.

Jonas. Holy hotness and sweetness! He is that “every guy” kind of hero who lives for the heroine. In this case, his entire being wants Caitlin. She is the problem; he isn’t. He wants to give her the world; he wants to protect her from it; and he wants real commitment. He is the main reason why I didn’t want to stop reading this story.

“…The fire in my vision spreads to my limbs. To the inner need inside of me to want to love her. This guy would die at my own hands if I ever saw him or met him in person and I would have not one f’ing regret.”

Caitlin’s friends. For all of his singular focus, Trey protects Caitlin and provides for her   when she cannot see “the forest through the trees.” Yes, she makes his life easier, but he anticipates her needs before she realizes it. This is also the case with Corbin and Teagan (Caitlin’s other best friends), although we don’t really hear from Corbin in this story. Trey is her security blanket and potential savior before Jonas takes that place.

The Friends-to-Lover’s trope. I know some readers aren’t fans of this particular trope because it seems that people are either lovers or friends. Why would that change? However, Lynn presents this trope in a way that doesn’t make it strange as Jonas and Caitlin aren’t life-long friends. They are engaged in an evolved “friends with benefits” relationship. It makes sense that Jonas wants more after spending two years committed to Caitlin. He isn’t unreasonable in wanting more, so this trope works within this story.

This leads me to my issues with the story:

Caitlin. Trust me when I say that I love a woman who knows her own mind. When a heroine makes the best choices for herself, I respect it, and I recognize we need it in romances. However, Caitlin isn’t self-reflective enough for the first ¾ of the story to recognize her issues, her reasons for forgoing relationships. Everyone around her recognizes it, but she lacks that self-knowledge. And it’s frustrating. I found her thinking redundant. After breaking Jonas’s heart and her own, it takes her must of the story PLUS several horrible dates to act upon her feelings with Jonas. I understand this is a romance, and we need to develop angst. However, it felt repetitive to the story for her to be “in the dark” about her past reflecting on her choices in the present and future. It didn’t make me a fan of hers.

Caitlin’s Past. This was the biggest issue I had with the story. We needed more understanding of Caitlin’s past. We gained a bit of it when Trey talks with Jonas, but it is largely undeveloped. An exchange with her parents or some other similar scene would have made us better understand Caitlin’s choices. Instead, the gravity of her past doesn’t weigh in heavily on her present. I wanted to feel her pain, be dug in with her on her reasons for forgoing relationships. But I didn’t fully believe her because I didn’t feel the issues as they weren’t developed enough for me.

Overall, I enjoyed reading 28 Dates by Stacey Lynn. I think it represents the current online dating culture well, and it shows us the need for our relationships to be conducted face-to-face. We can be “catfished” or stalked or turned off by people who hide behind a screen. As this story shows us, the best way to find love is right in front of you.

“It saddens me she doesn’t always realize she’s special and deserving of this and so much more. Thank God I have years to teach her. ‘You’re worth any cost.’ To my bottom line, to my profit margin, to my heart and soul. She’s worth risking everything for.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5⭐️ Review: Rachel Van Dyken’s Kickin’ It ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have actually been sitting on this review for a week or so. Or rather, I’ve been mulling Rachel Van Dyken’s newest book, Kickin’ It, since I finished reading it a week ago. From the time I started it until I finished it (which, by the way, happened to be one day), I was engrossed in the story from its outset.

In the world of #metoo and the push for equality between the sexes, this book is necessary in the romance world. Let’s be honest. There are so many moments when romance readers must suspend their disbelief over the treatment of a woman in a story. I am a personal fan of BDSM and dark romance books because they allow me to live in a world that, I’m fairly certain, I will never exist. For a small time, I can imagine it, but it never becomes my reality. However, there are many instances when women are treated like possessions or worse in romance books. And we accept it because it is fiction.

Yet, there is a bigger reality in our world and in our time. Women are taken advantage of by people of power, most oftentimes, men. This is wrong and dangerous and disgusting. Van Dyken’s newest book gives voice to this problem in a way that gives me hope for our future, for change.

Parker is a graduated college soccer player who is looking for her big break on a professional team. Unfortunately, the “buzz” surrounding her suggests she’s a “problem” player. She’s been accused of erratic behavior, which makes her a liability to any team. Thankfully, her roommate’s, brother, Matt, is a seasoned, well-known sports agent, and Willow (her roommate) has promised Parker that she will ask Matt to represent Parker to find her the best contract with a pro team.

Matt lives a comfortable life at the top of his game as an agent. At first sight, he’s unimpressed with Parker, believing her to be a problem client. She is brash and outspoken. Even more problematic, he is instantly attracted to her which causes problems for their living arrangement and representation. However, he suppresses his interest in her and begins to work for her. Very quickly, Matt comes to realize that Parker harbors a secret, one she hides carefully from everyone (including Willow). When he finds out her secret, will this end their work relationship, or will he believe her and protect her at all costs?

There is so much I want to say about this book, and I struggle to find all the words to say it. For one, Parker is one of my favorite heroines to date. She’s strong and capable and tragic and sensual in a way that is understated. She’s incredibly athletic, and her strength on the field matches her inner strength to persevere. She has been taken gross advantage of, and she should be devastated. Instead, she utilizes tenacity to stand in the face of fear. I loved her from the beginning through the middle to the end of this story, and she’s a necessary heroine today.

Similarly, Matt is the quintessential hero. In this book, important people in Parker’s life have let her down. They’ve betrayed her trust in them, and it’s damaged her. Matt is the first male in this book to truly “see” her. I have to admit. That is always one of my favorite parts in a romance. In Van Dyken’s book, it made me cry because I knew it was necessary that Parker be seen, especially by a male. He is stalwart, aggressive when necessary, thoughtful, and compassionate, all the qualities men need today to bring about change in our society. To be honest, it isn’t surprising within the realm of this story and Van Dyken’s former book, Risky Play, where Matt plays a large part in bringing the H and h together. Yet, he is fairly neurotic and set in his ways, so I was initially worried that he couldn’t be strong enough for Parker. And I was wrong, thankfully.

For all of the angst of this story, it is also incredibly funny. Matt’s chemistry with his clients/friends, Jagger and Slade, are some of the best interactions in the book. His sister, Willow, also lends humor to the story, which is a refreshing break from the headiness of the book’s story. This book is equal parts funny, serious, and sweet, the reasons I could not put it down.

I really cannot say enough about Rachel Van Dyken’s book, Kickin’ It. I know my personal preference is romances with serious topics that force readers to ponder on the gravity of life’s complications. Van Dyken’s book adds more voices to these necessary discussions. If you love sports romance with a little “meat” to its story, then you definitely will want to read Kickin’ It.

CruelIntentions_ecover Final Final

Life is a cruel game where only the most ruthless survive. It’s a truth my mother rebelled against, and she paid for it with her life. Now, I play their game. Publicly accepting the destiny that lies in wait for me when I turn eighteen.

But, behind closed doors, I plot my escape.

Trent, Charlie, and my twin, Drew, rule the hallways of Rydeville High with arrogance and an iron fist. I execute my role perfectly, hating every second, but they never let me forget my place in this world.

Everyone obeys the rules. They have for generations. Because our families have always been in control.

Until Cam, Sawyer, and Jackson show up. Throwing their new money around. Challenging the status quo. Setting hearts racing with their gorgeous faces, hot bodies, and bad boy attitudes.

Battle lines are drawn. Sides are taken. And I’m trapped in the middle, because I made a mistake one fateful night when I gave my V-card to a stranger in a blatant F you to my fiancé.

I thought it was the one thing I owned. A precious memory to carry me through each dark day.

Because the stranger was Camden Marshall, leader of the new elite and my perpetual tormenter. He hates me with a passion unrivalled, and he won’t be the only one. Fire will rain down if the truth is revealed, threatening alliances, and the power struggle will turn vicious.

“Hopefully, Camden Marshall acts as a suitable distraction, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.”

“I wonder what he’s like?” she muses, staring idly out the window.

“I spent most of last night Googling him, but it’s so weird, there isn’t a single photo of him or his family online.”

“Drew said they are notoriously reclusive.”

“Apparently so, according to the gossip sites. Camden’s father has Techxet—Sawyer’s father’s company—on retainer, and a team of technical specialists is dedicated twenty-four-seven to finding and removing all photographic content and any unsavory online content. I could barely find out anything about him other than his father is Wesley Marshall, owner of a pharmaceutical company called Femerst, and a much-respected philanthropist, and he met Sawyer and Hunt when they all enrolled at a private New York school a couple of years ago.”

“I bet he’s hot,” Jane speculates as our driver pulls into the entrance to Rydeville High.

“Of course, he’s hot. I don’t need a picture to confirm that. Hot, rich assholes always stick together. We should know.”

I spot Oscar fighting a smile through the front mirror.

“Just don’t go kissing this one,” Jane whispers, her expression half serious, half mischievous.

“Don’t worry. I’ll be going nowhere near Camden Marshall. Trust me on that score.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review of Siobhan Davis’s Cruel Intentions ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I might be a pawn in a game I don’t want to play, but that doesn’t mean I can’t win.”

As I was reading and finishing Siobhan Davis’s Cruel Intentions, two questions/thoughts came to mind:

  1. How much abuse of power can one heroine take onto her self?
  2. Cruel Intentions is a modern day dark romantic Great Gatsby if Gatsby, Nick, Daisy, Tom, and Jordan were high schoolers.

Siobhan Davis is wise to include a warning for this book because it is indeed a dark bully romance to the highest degree. And it is everything wrong and right about this genre.

Now, to be fair, I am fairly new to this genre. I’m still trying to determine if it is my fare. I’m open to most romance. I don’t generally discriminate. However, this book oftentimes crosses a line that makes the reader a bit (or a lot) uncomfortable. Please keep that in mind if you intend to read this book. Davis is right in warning that the book includes “mature content, graphic sexual scenes [one, in particular, is VERY uncomfortable and could trigger someone with past sexual abuse], and cursing.” Take this warning to heart; it is very, very true.

Like Fitzgerald’s Gatsby, this book illustrates the tension between old and new money within the confines of an elite high school. On one side are the elite, the children of the founding families of Rydeville. This includes our heroine, Abigail (Abby). This group also includes her twin brother, Drew, her fiance, Trent, her best friend, Jane, and their friend, Charlie. They run the school, even more than the school administration. Their power comes from their families’ positions of power in history. They are wealthy, entitled, and supreme. However, their lives are constructed by their fathers, and their freedom, even the men, is controlled for the advantage of continued power.

On the other side is the new elite: Camden, Jackson, and Sawyer. They have recently blown into town to challenge the power of the elite.  This group is as wealthy as the elite, but their money is “newer,” not founded in tradition. And their goal: to upend the elite from power. Or so it seems.

What we realize quickly is Camden (the leader of the new elite) and Abigail share a past, a chance one night encounter, and it causes Abigail problems when her brother, Trent, and Charlie leave town placing her in charge of the dynamics of their society. During their time alone, she is mercilessly bullied and bullies in return to protect herself. However, it also charges her attraction to Camden, complicating the existing power structure. Abigail’s place is challenged, and her forbidden attraction to Camden complicates her position in elite society. This complication causes much of the strife in this book. Will she gain power again? Will she and Camden truly find happiness, uniting the two sides, or are they destined to hate each other forever? Or will she be destroyed in the end?

This book has so many complications. For one, I think I struggle a bit with this genre: the dark bully high school romance. Yes, the book tells us that Abigail, Camden et al. are high school students, but they definitely do not act as such. They read like adults, just set in a high school. They are sexually experienced in ways that aren’t the norm for high schoolers, and they wield power like they are 40-somethings. I made several notes in my margins about my confusion over their ages because they do not read as high school aged. I share that because some people shun NA romance. If you like something such as dark romance, you could read this book and feel confident that you wouldn’t feel strange reading younger characters. They simply don’t seem to act like typical high-schoolers.

Secondly, as I mentioned at the outset of this review, I wondered time and time again how a heroine could take so much abuse because Abigail is abused on multiple fronts in this story. She is emotionally, mentally, and physically abused. Sometimes, it occurs in ways that are terrible. Yes, the blurb suggests that she holds power, and she uses it to her advantage at certain times, but her character takes on so much to her body and soul that I was often surprised that she survived it. Even more, I found it troubling at times. Don’t get me wrong. I LOVE dark romance. I have no triggers for the type of treatment typical of dark romances, but, given that she is high school aged, it made my stomach crawl at times. That being said, I also could not put this book down, even when I was uncomfortable with the bullying/abusive situations. Keep that in mind when you decide to read this book. There is something addictive about this story and these characters.

Additionally, Abigail is quite the “badass” heroine. She has skills in so many areas from ballet to motorcycle riding to surveillance/hacking that you cannot help but admire her, even when she’s abused and brought to her knees (literally and figuratively). I think she represents a strong woman given the structure and cage of her life. She finds her power within those confines, and it is admirable.

Thirdly, the males of this story are fairly interchangeable. There is some crossover of personality with Charlie seemingly synonymous with Sawyer, Drew and Camden being fairly alike, etc. Trent and Jackson are standouts for very different reasons. Trent is horrible. You will hate him, and that is his intent. Jackson is the comic relief, which is necessary to relieve the stress of the story. And trust me, you will feel stressed throughout this story.

Now, one of the complications with the men is the triangle-ish nature of Jackson, Camden, and Abigail. Abby tells us that she will always choose Camden because she feels more with him, BUT I struggled with this. It felt as though she and Jackson had a similar depth of chemistry. Yes, Jackson uses humor and drugs to mask his pain, but I thought she could have easily chosen him, even over Camden. If I had any critical feedback for Davis, I would suggest that she create a deeper connection between Camden and Abbey in the next book, Twisted Betrayal. If the intent is Abigail; finds her HEA with Camden in the end, then I want to ensure that Jackson is NOT an option, as they too have undeniable chemistry.

I feel strongly that Camden and Abbey are a destined couple. They have a strong $exual chemistry. When we end on the cliffhanger of this story, your heart will feel broken from the betrayal between the two. And this is the point of this story. The reader should feel their pain and strife, which is a warning. There isn’t an ending to this book. Instead, we are left with lots of questions and very few answers. The book ends with our hearts in our throats and a deep pit in our stomachs.

Again, how much can or should a heroine take? I think in the coming books in this trilogy, Abigail will wreak havoc on this world and for good reason, much as Gatsby did in West/East Egg.  If you love some serious drama, a lot of pain, and delicious darkness in your romance, then you should be reading Siobhan Davis’s Cruel Intentions. It is dark, dangerous, and devastatingly hot, much like Fitzgerald’s Gatsby.

In love and romance,

Profesor A
