Excerpt:

“Hey,” I say quietly, seeing her sitting up and looking at her phone. “You got the alert too?”

She nods and looks up. Even in the dark, I can see the fear in her eyes.

“Are you still scared of tornadoes?” I ask, stepping into the room. I shut the door so the cat doesn’t get out.

“Terrified.”

“I think it’s going to miss us.”

She nods again, pulling her lips around her teeth. “Hopefully.”

“Want me to sit with you? We can go into the basement if that’ll make you feel better too.”

“If the sirens go off, I’ll go down. And yeah…I’d, uh, I’d like if you sat with me.”

Crossing the room, I sit on the opposite side of the bed. Charlie puts her phone down and leans back against the pillows.

“Do you think it’s pathetic I’m still scared of tornadoes?”

“No,” I tell her honestly. “They are scary. You can’t do anything to prevent them or stop them. All you can do is hide.”

“Exactly. And the energy gets me all jittery.” She holds up her hand. “I’m shaking.”

I take her hand in mine, lacing my fingers through hers. “It’s okay. Try to go back to sleep if you want. I’ll listen for the sirens.”

“Aren’t you tired?”

“Not really. I closed down the bar a few times last week. My sleep schedule is always fucked up.”

“That would mess with you, I guess.”

She swallows hard, looking over me and out the window. It’s pitch black out there, and the rain comes down in sheets. Thunder and lightning tear through the sky, and the windows rattle. Charlie squeezes my hand a little tighter.

“Bad storms tended to break up before they got into the city,” she says. “We had storms, of course, but no tornadoes.”

“We won’t have one tonight either.” I give her hand a squeeze and settle down next to her. She’s still shaking, and it’s killing me not to comfort her more. Pulling the blankets back up to her shoulders, she wiggles a little closer. I don’t know if it’s on purpose or if she’s trying to get comfortable.

Heart hammering, I pull my hand from hers and rest it on her waist. The blankets are between my hand and her body, yet it sends a jolt through me. She moves closer again, and this time I know it was intentional. She rests her hand on top of mine and slits her eyes open, looking up at me.

“Thank you, Owen.”

“Of course,” I whisper back. Her blonde hair is a mess around her face, and I turn off the light on my phone. The storm rages around us, but Charlie is safe in my arms. Her breathing becomes slow and steady, letting me know she fell asleep.

It’s innocent and platonic, and I’m hit with the memory of holding Charlie while she slept off her first drunk experience. I’m working hard to tell myself that this doesn’t mean anything, yet I know this will be a new favorite memory of mine…even if it doesn’t lead to anything.

Who doesn’t love a second chance romance? For me, I love the “push and pull” of the H and h’s feelings as they try to deny that feelings still exist. In Emily Goodwin’s newest Dawson Family book series, Fight Dirty is just that: a second chance for Owen and Charlie. It’s a story of finding love again when you so desperately want to let it go because it’s initial pain is too great to bear. 

Charlie and Owen were high school/college sweethearts. They fell in love easily, and their passion was deep. Unfortunately, after college, Owen cannot commit to Charlie, and he walks away from their relationship, breaking Charlie’s heart. Charlie goes on to law school, finds a new love, and seems to have moved on. Until she finds her fiance has been cheating on her. This causes her to make changes: one of which entails moving back home from New York. In doing so, this puts her right in Owen’s path, and he has decided that she will be his again. Will Owen win Charlie back? Will they find their happy ending?

Owen has been a fixture in Emily Goodwin’s other Dawson Family books. Always the playboy, no one in the family believes he will ever settle down. He seems stuck on the path of no commitment. However, we find out pretty quickly that this has more to do with letting go of the love of his life. It’s a realization for the reader that Owen’s carefree attitude about women is really a defense mechanism for his bleeding heart. This is what makes Owen loveable. There are definitely times in the story when you want to give him a good smack because he acts so arrogant with Charlie. Quite frankly, I would have liked for him to grovel a bit more. Instead, Owen’s bravado can be a bit much at times. At least if I was Charlie, I would think so. 

Charlie is a dream. She’s also every woman who has ever been spurned by a man (in this case, two). I love that she places herself on the path of self-awareness in going home. Yes, it could be perceived that she is “licking her wounds” from her broken engagement. Yet, she quickly realizes finding out about her fiance is more a blessing than a curse. If anything, I would have liked for Charlie to be more stubborn with Owen. I hated that she was so instantly attracted to him again. This is a man who could not commit to her initially, and I’d like to think that she would make him work for it more. Instead, she falls easily into some old patterns. 

That being said, I absolutely loved these two together. Each makes the other one better, and I did love that Owen sought to woo Charlie. Even though she felt an insta-attraction to him, he did take baby steps to win her over. This lead to some great foreplay and passion building in the story. It’s what drove it forward. 

I have quickly fallen in love with Emily Goodwin’s Dawson Family books. I love the crossovers of the characters and the continued story of past couples. I do think that Goodwin could edit out some of the day-to-day details of her characters. Yet, I will definitely continue to read books like her Fight Dirty. This is a family you don’t want to say good-bye to too easily.

There was a knock on her door. Ariel glanced to the clock. It was getting late. The pizza had likely arrived. She didn’t want pizza. She wanted to start the day again and not have any of this hanging over them. When she’d gotten on that plane, she’d been filled with anticipation, and all of it was gone now. She’d expected dinner to be a quiet affair with only her and Robert. Now she would have to referee between Owen and Dante. She needed to get the whole group together for a session to get at the underlying problem.

“I’ve got to go, Damon.”

“Be safe.”

She hung up her mobile and slipped it into her pocket before answering the door. She’d expected Rebecca or Owen, but it was Robert who stood in her doorway.

And he looked delicious. He’d changed out of his traveling clothes into a set of perfectly pressed black slacks, a snowy white dress shirt, and blue tie. It should have looked staid. It would have on most men, but on Robert it made her wonder what she would see when she peeled off all those clothes.

She had a damn degree in psychology and it didn’t mean anything when her hormones got involved.

“Hey, I know I acted like a massive asshole earlier today.” He had a grim look on his face that changed to charming when he brought his hand around from his back and showed her the perfect white rose he offered her. “Would you please let me make up for it?”

There were a thousand reasons to say no. She could do it gently. She could remind him that the first chance they’d had to prove they could manage a relationship and still work together they’d blown. She could point out that there was still the hope of a cure out there.

But she wasn’t nearly as dressed as he was. “Give me a minute to change.”

He shook his head. “You look beautiful and we’re only going to the kitchen.”

“You dressed for the occasion.”

“I was also the asshole who challenged the authority of my commander in the field. Trust me, I like this far better than dropping to the floor and giving you a hundred like I…” He shook his head. “Not going there.”

She stepped in, putting a hand on his face. “It’s okay. Let the visual piece go and tell me what you felt.”

He pressed his cheek against her hand. “No therapist stuff tonight. I promise I’ll write it down later and talk to Kai about it, but I want you to stop thinking about me as a patient. This can’t work if you don’t. Please come to the kitchen with me. I managed to shove everyone else in the media room. They’re watching a football match. Well, Rebecca is reading on her e-reader and rolling her eyes when the guys yell at the screen, but the kitchen is on the opposite end of the floor. I promise it’s quiet there.”

She was still in the slacks and blouse she’d worn this afternoon. They were casual and comfortable. Certainly not something she would wear on a date. Robert was far better dressed for the occasion.

A vision of a private dinner where he was in a suit and she was wearing absolutely nothing floated across her brain. Sir wouldn’t want her in clothes. Sir would want to see nothing but her own skin so he could touch her everywhere, whenever he pleased. They could spend long hours like that. She wouldn’t worry about anything at all but pleasing her dominant partner.

“Come on.” He used that deep voice on her she’d heard him use at The Garden. Like her, Robert spent at least one night each weekend playing. She’d seen him paired up with some of her friends, but never had he taken one to a privacy room or up to his flat.

She hadn’t indulged herself in sex in a long time.

Winter Renshaw has done it again with The Marriage Pact. This is a second chance, frenemies-to-lovers type of romance. It is the tale of two people, Prince Julian and Emelie, finding each other again after much discord and misunderstanding. It is a beautiful lesson in moving beyond pain to find an enduring lifetime of love. It is also a reminder to be one’s self each day, no matter the circumstances and expectations. These two are lovely and dreamy, even in their pain.

Prince Julian and Emelie are childhood friends, now adults. At 16, Emelie gives her virginity to Julian, only to be met with silence and disdain the day after. After a childhood of taunting, giving her virginity and love to Julian is a huge step. His rejection of her creates so much pain that she makes an oath to never marry him. The pain he inflicts on her is too much.

Eight years later, Prince Julian comes to her door asking to marry her as a way to save his kingdom. After much reticence, Emelie agrees with the agreement that she can end the marriage after five years. What Emelie doesn’t know is that Julian is interested in more. Much of their story is a misunderstanding on both sides. Will they find love, or will their marriage end when the five years has passed?

“I don’t know what it is about first loves, but even the briefest ones leave their marks and the tiniest, most microscopic part of you can’t un-love them, even if you can’t stand them.”

What Winter Renshaw does well is angst. She has this way of telling stories that infuse a bit of humor, but her true calling is making you feel. As I was reading Julian and Emelie’s story, my stomach was knitted into knots because Emelie’s pain is palpable. I kept waiting for the awful moment to happen when Julian would readily take advantage of her again. And it’s this reticent anticipation that keeps Renshaw’s story in its grasp. I began this in the late evening before going to bed, while I am on vacation, and I could not put it down. I simply had to know if Julian and Emelie could survive the lead up to their marriage. Would they make it through the hurt of the past? It’s this driving force that keeps you reading this story until the very last word.

Prince Julian and Emelie are likeable characters, even the prince. Given what we find out about his treatment of Emelie, you expect to detest him. However, Renshaw lets us into his thoughts quickly, and we realize that he has another side of this story, an important side of it. Therefore, there is never a time to dislike him. He is also simply a survivor of pain. “The mark she left on my heart that summer has never faded, and now here we are. It’s funny how things work out sometimes. And this will work out. It has to…”

Together, Julian and Emelie’s souls are interwoven into a story of love over time even in the midst of pain. It’s also about Julian learning who he is outside of his role as prince. Emelie’s love for him helps him transcend the shackles of his kingdom to find a peace in their love. The epilogue is one of my favorite parts as it illustrates the power of freedom and self-love. “I live for these moments with him, the ordinary and beautiful ones…”

If I had one criticism of the story, I’d have to note Emelie’s character. Emelie is a classic over-thinker, and it creates some of the drama of the story. I connect with her in that way, but as a reader, it had moments when it was too much for the story. For the most part, I loved her, but I also felt she found problems where they didn’t truly exist. This is also the genius of Renshaw’s character construction; she generally makes you both love and hate her main characters.

There is always something beautiful about the stories Winter Renshaw tells so well. And The Marriage Pact is no different. Its beauty comes from its painful truths, and the way in which Renshaw weaves it with the love of its two main characters. As I stated before, I could not put this book down. I finished it in the line for Westminster Abbey in my first trip to London, and the beauty of Prince Julian and Emelie’s romance colored the edges of the beauty of that place.
