✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jolie Vines’s Picture This ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What does it mean to know love? Even more, what does it mean to love and be loved unconditionally? These are the questions of Jolie Vines’s newest book, Picture This, the fourth book in the Marry the Scot series. In this book, we are re-introduced to the McRaes, Scottish Highlanders who fall deeply in love with the women who hold their interest.

This story follows William or “Wasp,” one of the twins who are the youngest of the McRaes. In an earlier book, namely the second book in the series, Love Most, Say Least, William is a teen, one wanting to follow in his brothers’ footsteps. He loses his virginity to Taylor, his “adopted” brother James’s sister’s friend. At that moment, this is everything to him. Fast forward several years to this book, and William runs across Taylor again at a gala where he rushes to protect her from a potential tragedy. As in the past, sparks fly, and he realizes that he has never moved past his time with Taylor; she has indelibly marked him forever.

Conversely, Taylor is stuck. She is trying to ensure the care of her sick aunt, and the only way to do so means making a “deal with the devil,” her father. In her family, she has only been seen as a pawn, something to deal and manipulate for her father’s political gain. Taylor struggles to truly know herself except she has always felt most true to herself in William’s arms. Before sacrificing herself for her father’s gain, she decides to connect with William again. She travels to Scotland where she decides to accompany William as he photographs a music tour through Europe and the U.S. As they journey, Taylor begins to understand the truth about love through William’s love for her. Their relationship grows, and Taylor must decide if she can live a life with William or sacrifice it to protect her aunt.

As I’ve mentioned in prior reviews on Vines’s books, she knows how to write the swooniest of heroes. She easily combines an alpha personality with the most tenderest of hearts. William is no different. I’ve loved Callum, James, and Gordain in this series, along with Arnie in her book, Race You. If you look back at each of my reviews for those books, you’ll notice me waxing poetic at the way she marries these two qualities into her heroes. Well, William is the epitome of this. He is definitely my new favorite Vines hero. He isn’t stubborn like Callum, too serious like James, and reticent like Gordain. This man knows what he wants early on, and he makes it his mission to pour love into Taylor. He is alpha where it matters: the bedroom. However, he doesn’t take the persona into the real world. He recognizes that Taylor simply needs to be loved in order to bloom. He’s tender and thoughtful, qualities she desperately needs. Vines constructs him to be the true soulmate for Taylor, and you never doubt their connection.

I also loved that Vines gives the perfect William a weakness: introversion. And his introversion is significant. It manifests itself, not only emotionally, but also physically. He sees this as a problem, but Vines uses it to humanize him, or he would be too much, too perfect, something impossible in the world. I connected with William’s introversion as I too am introverted and need space from people, even though I don’t manifest physical symptoms. The power of great authors is helping their readers connect with their characters.

While I love William (really, really love him), honestly Taylor held my heart. I mourned for her past when it’s revealed that her aunt is the only person who has shown her unconditional love. Her parents don’t “see” her, and they don’t love her in the way she needs love. Given this past, she cannot even recognize falling in love. Until William. When she begins to realize her love for him, she becomes like him, offering him tenderness and thoughtfulness. She cares for him and accepts his issues with introversion. Like William sees Taylor, Taylor also “sees” the true William. Again, these two are true soulmates, a sense that Vines crafts so well.

There is a little bit of angst in this book, but it is always so mild. It is meant to keep the reader engaged in the story, but not to shut them down. Vines carefully creates a story of love that piques your interest, carries you through Taylor and William’s turmoil, and delivers you to their happily-ever-after at the end. With that, she brilliantly incorporates her past characters from the series, so it feels like you’re returning to a beloved place. She offers us little updates of Callum/Mathilda, James/Beth, Gordain/Ella, and Ally. I think that’s one of the things I love about the series, especially this one.

And finally, she leaves you with a whopper of a cliffhanger, leading into Ally’s book. I did NOT see it coming, setting up the next book which she’s projecting for September, thank goodness.

I absolutely love a Jolie Vines’s book; Picture This is no different. She has her own voice, and her heroes are distinct. I think that’s one of my favorite parts of reading: reading and recognizing an author’s specific style. And Vines’s voice is very distinct. As questioned at the beginning of the review, what does it mean to love and be loved? Well, this reader loves Jolie Vines’s books, and I don’t foresee that love diminishing any time soon.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Taylor has lived with threats and blackmail her entire life. Either she behaves like the perfect, dutiful daughter, or gives up her most desperate wish. CHAPTER REVEAL

Thanks to another Post-it note from Aunt Crystal, I was able to figure out which guest bedroom she cleared out for me.

Although cleared out is a bit of an understatement. Aside from the queen-sized bed covered with a purple bedspread, an empty bureau, and yet another Post-it note promising to take me shopping later in the week…the room is bare bones.

Not that I mind. I managed to stuff my entire life into one duffle bag and a medium suitcase. No-frills suits me.

Less shit to get attached to.

I open the closet door to hang up some of my clothes, but three plaid skirts, three crisp, white button-down shirts, and three navy blazers snag my attention instead.

The Royal Hearts Academy emblem above the left breast pockets practically taunts me.

I wasn’t in a position to make any requests considering my aunt and her husband were nice enough to take in a stray—but the one thing I insisted on was attending the local public school instead of Royal Hearts Academy. My dad forced me to go to private school for elementary and junior high and it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

The organ in my chest squeezes. With the exception of meeting Jace.

Of course, the one thing I wanted was the one thing Crystal’s husband wasn’t willing to negotiate on given it’s my cousin’s—technically, step-cousin’s—senior year and he attends RHA.

Wayne thinks it would be beneficial for me to go to school with his son Oakley, so I’ll have someone to show me the ropes.

However, it’s clear good ol’ Uncle Wayne must not be very observant. I only met him once briefly at my aunt’s wedding four years ago, but a quick scroll through Oakley’s Instagram suggests he’s about as useful as a goldfish at a Bob Marley concert.

And by useful? I mean, stoned.

Which probably explains why he didn’t pick me up from the airport like he was supposed to, or why I still haven’t seen any signs of him…despite being here all afternoon and most of the evening.

I send him another text, but just like the first ten I sent today, he doesn’t respond.

Curiosity getting the best of me, I slip out the door of my new room and venture down the long hallway. My aunt said there were six bedrooms in the house—but after knocking on several doors, it’s obvious Oakley isn’t in any of them.

Stifling a groan, I amble down the staircase and wander into the kitchen. Much like the rest of the house, the kitchen is spacious, and everything looks expensive, but price aside, it’s pretty standard. Stainless steel appliances, glass table, large granite island in the center.

And no Oakley.

After checking the living room, my uncle Wayne’s office, and the bathroom on the first floor, I make my way down the stairs leading to the basement.

The smell of marijuana infiltrates my nostrils almost immediately.

I’m not a buzzkill, I have no issues with people who smoke—what I have an issue with is people who indulge so much they forget the important stuff.

Like answering text messages or picking their step-cousin up at the airport.

The big screen television—which is currently broadcasting two naked girls grinding against one another to awful mumble rap—illuminates the basement enough I’m able to see the back of a leather couch. The smoke wafting toward the ceiling fan tells me there’s a good chance I’ll find Oakley on the other side of it.

I don’t know whether to laugh or shake my head as I round the corner and see him passed out with one hand down his pants and the other holding what appears to be a partially smoked blunt.

The baseball cap he’s wearing hides most of his face, but he definitely looks like he’s been asleep for a while. How the house hasn’t burnt down is anyone’s guess.

I’m about to dispose of the still lit blunt and go back upstairs…but then he speaks.

“Hey, babe.”

Uh. Kind of weird, but considering I’ve been called worse by strangers, I decide to roll with it.

“Hey.”

“I was wondering when you’d get here,” he murmurs, his voice thick with sleep.

I tamp down the urge to tell him I would have been here sooner if he picked me up from the goddamn airport like he was supposed to.

We’re going to be stuck together for the next year and bitching at him isn’t a good way to start a relationship.

I open my mouth to ask if he wants to grab a bite to eat later, but he speaks again.

“You’re so fucking hot.”

Okay, this train has officially reached awkward station.

“Um. Thank—”

Before I can finish that sentence, he shoves his sweatpants down and…

Oh. My. God.

Bile works up my throat as he wraps his hand around his exposed dick.

“Come on, beautiful,” he groans. “Quit teasing me and sit on it.”

I’m positive I must have a contact high because that’s the only way to explain why the actual fuck my step-cousin is summoning me to sit on his penis.

“Gross. What is wrong with you?”

Shielding my vision with my hands, I proceed to back away. Unfortunately, I knock into the coffee table so hard I see stars.

“Dammit,” I yelp, gripping my throbbing calf.

“You’re not Hayley.”

Talk about stating the obvious.

“No shit, Sherlock.” I make the huge mistake of looking up. “Oh, my God, dude. Can you please put your wiener away?”

“Sure thing,” the pervert says, rising from the couch. “As soon as you tell me who the hell you are and why you’re in my house.”

He has got to be kidding me.

“Seriously?” I point to myself. “I’m Dylan.”

He tilts his head to the side, like he’s having trouble understanding why my name would have any significance to him.

“Your cousin,” I grit through my teeth and he blanches.

Eureka.

I breathe a sigh of relief as he pulls up his pants.

“You’re not supposed to be here until Saturday.”

“It is Saturday,” I inform him, and his eyes widen.

“Well, shit.” He places the blunt between his lips and inhales. “This stuff is better than I thought.” Coughing, he holds it out to me. “Want some?”

I give him a sardonic smile. “I appreciate the peace offering and all, but I’ll pass.”

He doesn’t look offended in the least. “That’s cool.” His expression turns serious as he snuffs the cherry of the blunt on a can of soda. “Look, I’d appreciate it if you didn’t tell the parental units I tried to bang you, okay? They’re on my case enough lately.”

Oakley doesn’t have to worry. I won’t be telling anyone he tried to bang me.

I give him a nod.

He nods back.

And then it’s nothing but uncomfortable silence.

Quite the riveting exchange we’re having here.

“It’s Saturday night,” he declares unexpectedly while stretching his arms over his head and yawning. “Christian’s throwing his big end of summer party before school starts.”

I don’t know who Christian is, but I wouldn’t mind going to a party. In fact, meeting a few people and reconnecting with some old friends before school starts will probably make things easier for me on Monday.

My heart does a little flip. Maybe Jace will be there.

There are so many things I want to tell him.

And even more things I want to ask him.

Like why he blocked my number. Or why he never returned any of the dozens of messages I sent him on social media after I left.

“A party sounds like fun. I can be rea—”

“Don’t wait up,” Oakley utters, brushing past me.

Well, that settles that then. My cousin is a bigger tool than the one contained in his pants.

“By the way,” he calls out from the stairs. “The school admins are assholes. I doubt they’ll let you keep that blue crap in your hair.”

Highlights. They’re called highlights.

A smile touches my lips. I hope they hate my blue hair so much they refuse admission and I have no choice but to attend Royal Manor High instead.

Lost-in-You-highres

Robert McClellan was forced to serve as a soldier in a war he didn’t understand. Liberated by McKay-Taggart, he struggles every day to reclaim the life he lost and do right by the men he calls his brothers, The Lost Boys. Only one thing is more important – Ariel Adisa. The gorgeous psychologist has plagued his dreams since the day they met. Even as their mission pushes him to his limits, he can’t stop thinking about taking his shot at finding a life beyond all this with her.

Ariel Adisa is a force to be reckoned with. Her performance in Toronto proved she’s more than just a brilliant mind, but Robert still acts as if she is a wilting flower who needs his protection. Joining him on the mission to Munich should be the perfect opportunity to test their skills and cement their relationship. She and Robert are an excellent match. But when a stunning secret from Robert’s past is revealed, their world is turned upside down and nothing will ever be the same again.

While they chase dark secrets across Europe, Robert and Ariel realize that the only thing worse than not knowing who you are could be discovering who you used to be…

Lost in You teaser 4Excerpt:

He led Ariel out. Down the hall he saw Dante outside the media room, a beer in his hand. He’d been turned toward the kitchen at the opposite end of the hall, as though he’d been standing there staring at it. Had he been listening to the happy couples?

There was something dark in Dante that always gave him pause.

Dante turned without a word and disappeared behind the doors where he would likely drink himself to sleep. It seemed to be the way he and Sasha operated.

But he wasn’t thinking about that tonight. Tomorrow would be soon enough to sit everyone down and talk about the problems they were having. He would get Jax on the phone. He wasn’t leaving him out because he was in London.

“Are you all right?” Ariel had stopped beside him. “Is Dante giving you trouble?”

He was glad she’d been upstairs when they’d gone on their rant. “I think the pressure is starting to get to him. But we can talk about that tomorrow. I think after we get back to London we should have a big group meeting and get some things out in the open.”

“They think Damon and Ian are keeping things from them?”

No. He did not want to go there. He stopped in the middle of the hall and got into her personal space. She backed up against the wall and he loomed over her. It was time to move from reality to a place where they might be able to play out a few fantasies, if she was ready. “No work talk. If you want to go to sleep, I’ll kiss you now and see you in the morning. Tucker and I are in the room next to you. If you need anything I’ll be there. If you aren’t tired and you want to talk some more, we can go down to the bar and have another glass of wine with the full knowledge we don’t have to go any further than that. I’m more than willing to sit up talking to you all night long.”

She tilted her head up to him. “And if I want to go to bed but not to sleep?”

His heart rate ticked up, blood starting to thrum through his system as he invaded further, brushing his chest against hers. He reached for her wrists and gently brought them up and over her head, pinning her to the wall. “Then we need to make a few things clear.”

She took a deep breath, her lips curling up as though she liked the way he smelled. “Me sub, you Dom. Got it.”

He leaned over. “Hey, I’m trying to make sure I take care of you the way you like to be taken care of. I’ve watched you play. I don’t think your play partners realized how much you like being dominated. I think they view you as a woman who enjoys a spanking from time to time. They don’t get how much you need to know your partner is thinking about how to handle you. They don’t understand that you need to stop thinking. You need a place where you obey your partner.”

“In their defense, I had no interest in sex with any of them. I was looking for a spanking, some physical play that wouldn’t lead to real intimacy. You watched me?”

“I always watch you,” he admitted. “It’s why my brothers insist I’m your stalker. I watch you because I can’t not watch you when you’re in a room. If I thought for a second that it made you uncomfortable, I would make myself stop, but I think you like it.”

She watched him, too, and not in a way that made him think she was wary of him. It had always been there between them—the crackle and fire of sexual chemistry.

“You’re going to be a talky one, aren’t you?” she asked.

And she was going to be a brat.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Lexi Blake’s Lost in You ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Shhh…I have a secret. I received an ARC of Lexi Blake’s Lost in You for an honest review, and I…didn’t remember signing up for it. I have posted promos for her because her blurbs intrigue me and I LOVE to help out authors. I know it can be difficult to get readers to read your books, so I figure I can use the space of a blog and social media to get eyes on books. That’s a grand thing. Getting people to read? Yes!

Well, anyways. An ARC for Lost in You landed on my Kindle and me, being a lover of romance, figured I should read it. Right? It’s what I love to do. After reading the blurb, it sounded intriguing. Romantic suspense – check. Secrets – check. Chemistry off the page – check. All of these qualities in the blurb called to my little romantic heart, and I was in. So here’s my review in bullets:

  • I struggled at first to get into the story, not because Lexi Blake isn’t exciting. I struggled because I hadn’t read the first two books in this series, Masters and Mercenaries: The Forgotten. Blake really tries to give enough background to help a new reader, but I found myself getting lost in the many characters of this story. There are two main characters, the hero and heroine: Robert and Ariel. That was easy to figure out. However, Robert comes with a group of guys: The Lost Boys (Tucker, Dante, Sasha, Owen, Jax, Theo…). A few of them have books, but several didn’t, and I found myself lost to remember everyone. There are also men in charge of the McKay-Taggert and Knight group, the group trying to help The Lost Boys understand their pasts while protecting them. Plus there are women: Ariel, Kim, Rebecca, et al. I spent the first half of the story simply getting my head around the characters and some of the back story for Ariel and Robert. That caused the story to drag for me. Now, remember, this isn’t Lexi Blake’s fault. Her writing is impeccable, and she’s careful to give the details necessary to get your mind around the characters and the backstory. I’m simply noting this for first-time readers of Lexi Blake and this series; this isn’t really a standalone. I mean, it could be, but I think you’d do well to read the first two books in the series to really help you with this story. Now, that I’ve read Lost in You, I feel prepared for the next book, Tucker and Veronica’s story. And it sounds like a BIG one.
  • I loved Ariel and Robert. They truly complete each other. Besides his past coming back to haunt them, there isn’t anything horrible between them. Their pasts are the only issues that complicate their relationship. Beyond that, their chemistry is palpable from the story; they are $exy incarnate. You’ll love Robert for his kind but dominating nature, for his compassion, for his adoration of Ariel. And you’ll love Ariel’s strength and her compassion to help The Lost Boys find their past in order to help their future. They are good people, good characters.
  • Now, this story can be confusing in trying to determine what it is. There is definitely some romantic suspense here. Actually, I should say there is a lot of it. It’s got spycraft and intrigue for days. However, with that, it is also a BDSM story. I have to be honest. I struggled with the BDSM part because I’ve read a lot of those stories, like whole books focused on those relationships. And this reads as BDSM – light, and it feels slightly manufactured. Again, I didn’t read the first two books of this series, and I’m fairly certain I’m missing something here, but I didn’t think this needed to even be a part of the story. It’s like it added another confusing layer to the book. Don’t get me wrong. I love a good BDSM story. That isn’t the issue. It just seems like something that isn’t necessary. I’d love the romantic suspense espionage-type story on its own. But again, this is probably just me, a new reader of Lexi Blake.

There is so much to like about this book: the characters, the story, the $ex. I’m thankful that I accidentally signed up to read this book. It definitely grabbed my attention and kept me on the edge of my seat, so to speak. I recommend Lexi Blake’s Lost in You, but I do recommend reading the first of the series before doing so. I know it will make you appreciate this book even more.

In love and romance,

Professor A
