✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5++⭐️ Review: Ilsa Madden-Mills’s I Hate You ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

“…but for the first time in my life, the walls around my heart were cracked, just a little, and even though I had my rules, I wanted him to be the one who stuck around. I wanted him to ask for more.”

Brokenness. Each of us carries parts of ourselves that have been broken by past traumas/experiences. To protect those broken parts, we have constructed a wall. Depending on the type of breakage, that wall may be thick and high, or it might be something that can be penetrated by another person. It really depends on the experience or trauma that broke us. This is a common theme in romance. For me, it’s a theme that pushes up against my own broken pieces or soul bruises. And when this happens, magic occurs in romance. At least, that’s the situation for me.

Ilsa Madden-Mills’s newest book, I Hate You, interrogates the idea of brokenness and insecurity. The book gives us the story of Blaze and Charisma. Six months prior to the story, Blaze publically breaks up with Charisma with only the comment that she “isn’t his type.” As the new school year approaches, Charisma, still struggling with Blaze’s actions, questions her self-worth from his perspective. On seeing each other for the first time since the break-up, it’s still clear there is chemistry between them. Blaze still has eyes for Charisma, and he decides to try to build a friendship with her, but nothing more because he finds completion near her. Both of them are conflicted as their friendship progresses. Charisma is still angry with Blaze because she has no real closure to the break-up, and Blaze believes he isn’t the right person for Charisma. Unfortunately, their chemistry is undeniable. Will Charisma and Blaze find peace together at the end of this story? That IS the question.

This story, my friends, is a slow burn. It’s the perfect building of two souls’ need for each other. Blaze and Charisma are the same person just with a different but similar issue. What I loved about this story the most is these characters. In the two books prior to this one, I Bet You and I Dare You, Blaze and Charm provide some of the humor in the story. Yet, in reading I Hate You, we realize that those are simply fronts to much deeper issues. I won’t share their brokenness here because I want the reader to experience it. I don’t want to spoil the depth of their hurts, but you must know that Madden-Mills has crafted these complex, profound characters to draw your heart into their story. I will say that these two, Blaze and Charisma, hit up against my “soul bruises” so much so that I connected with them deeply. I think every chapter found me with tears in my eyes as I empathized with their struggles and hurts. In fact, the final chapter before the epilogue found me lying in bed, bawling like a baby. To me, that’s what makes Madden-Mills a fantastic writer. I’ve read her entire book list, and I continuously go back to her because she realizes people like me on the page, even if their experiences are different from my own. That’s her writing genius.

I love both Blaze and Charisma, but my heart really belongs to Blaze. Madden-Mills gives him this external bravado, but a child-like broken spirit. As such, my heart rent for him time and time again as he missed Charisma’s soul trying to touch his own. This story is definitely about miscommunication. These two think they know each other, but they don’t really know how to read each other. This is what leads to the slow burn of this story. Their story takes most of the book to tell, and it’s really the last chapter before the epilogue where it finds its falling action resolved. Your heart will wrench for these two because they can’t see their potential for most of the book. But that’s the beauty of I Hate You. I’ve read other books that create this same tension, but it stops me at some point. It takes me a bit of time to finish reading the book. However, I picked this book up at 9 p.m. at night, and I didn’t put it down until 4 a.m. when I finished it. I was drawn into Blaze and Charisma’s story because Madden-Mills gives you characters that you need to know will be alright at the end. And, boy, does she offer that here.

In looking at her books, I Hate You is now probably my favorite Madden-Mills book to date. I never begin reading a book to find the “best” one. But Blaze and Charisma captured my heart from the first to the last page. In spending a couple of days reflecting on it, I’ve come to understand why I love it so much. It’s quite simple: my internal broken parts find themselves in the pages of this book. Ilsa Madden-Mills’s careful construction of these divine characters in I Hate You will find purchase in your heart. It surely did in mine. This book is like Charisma to Blaze: “a fire in my hands.”

“She knows my heart. Her name is written there. “

THE DAY HE CAME BACK IS LIVE!

A Standalone Contemporary Romance

New York Times, USA Today, and #1 Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author

Penelope Ward

SYNOPSIS

It was the summer of my life.

I’d met the guy of my dreams.

Unfortunately, he was the son of my uppity employer—and very much off-limits.

But Gavin was a rebel. He knew his mother would disown him if she found out about us; in his eyes, we just had to be careful.

He never treated me as his mother did—like hired help.

Instead, Gavin put me on a pedestal and loved me harder than I’d ever been loved in my life.

 What a summer it was.

Until it all ended—badly.

I was never supposed to see Gavin again.

That didn’t stop me from thinking about him every day for ten years.

I knew little about his life now, just that he was an entrepreneur living an ocean away.

When a twist of fate had me working again in the very place our love affair started a decade earlier, I knew it was only a matter of time before I might see him again.

But I wasn’t prepared.

What if he hated me?

What if he loved someone else now?

I wasn’t prepared for all the unknowns.

And most of all, I wasn’t prepared for today to be the day he came back.

From USA Today bestselling author Willow Winters comes a heart-wrenching, edge-of-your-seat gripping, romantic suspense.

She was too good for this world. I was too much of a bastard to push her away.

I grew up in this life, and now I run these streets. Blood and violence taint everything I touch.

Everything but her. She was my constant through it all.

Just a touch would singe and soothe.

Just a look would tempt and torment.

She became my escape and my addiction.

I only survived because she was by my side.

I should’ve known better than to indulge.

I should’ve known better than to let her fall for me.

It was only a matter of time before the danger bled into what we had. I was Laura’s downfall. Problem was, she was mine too.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: D. Kelly’s Dating Roulette ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 1/2

Dating and rules. The two are necessary together, but also very very complicated. Rules protect hearts, ensure boundaries, and guide the relationship. However, they block feelings, and they allow a heart to become too protected that it misses out on fully experiencing feelings because rules always come from your mind, not your heart.

D. Kelly’s Dating Roulette is a story about Bexley and Tristan, best friends since high school. Tristan is also best friends with the first guy to break Bexley’s heart, hence the way Tristan and Bexley meet. From that moment, these two are inseparable. They go to college together, they live together, and quite frankly, Tristan would love to work with Bexley. But with all that time spent together, these two have never dated. For one, Bexley has rules and guidelines for dating. And no one has ever come close to scoring a seventh date with Bexley. As the story begins, feelings are changing for Bexley and Tristan. Tristan begins to see Bexley in a more amorous way, while it takes Bexley a bit of time to see Tristan similarly. She is definitely attracted to him at some point. Eventually, Tristan decides to make a deal with Bexley: date him for seven dates. After the seventh date, they can be a couple if it works for each of them or they can remain friends. Since these two began as a friendship, Tristan knows exactly how to date Bexley, and very quickly, these two fall in love. Unfortunately, life complicates any good relationship, and Tristan and Bexley’s burgeoning relationship is threatened. Even more, their friendship may change too. Will these two find their happy ending? Will they find true happiness with each other as a couple or as friends?

I loved this story. So much so, that I picked the book up and didn’t put it down until I finished it a day later. As I have stated in recent blog reviews, I don’t mind a friends-to-lovers trope. I appreciate it more when it has a twist to it. I’m driven quite mad when one friend fights the attraction over the other friend, Thankfully, that isn’t the case with D. Kelly’s romance. They are both “all in” once they acknowledge their attraction to each other. I do think Tristan has been attracted to Bexley for longer than she has been attracted to him. But also, Tristan has to push past all of Bexley’s “issues” with men and relationships. They are both “well-traveled” in the relationship department, but I think we realize that Bexley has a few more miles than Tristan.

Since Bexley has rules and “hang-ups” when it comes to guys (read that as “picky”…nothing wrong with that. It’s simply a statement), Tristan’s attentiveness to her achieves Kelly’s goal: building an undeniable chemistry between the two and keeping her reader’s engaged. I can’t speak for other romance readers, but I’m a personal fan of the man who loves a woman (or man) in her (his) love language. To a certain degree, Tristan does this.

He also becomes the problem in the relationship when there is a misunderstanding about Bexley’s relationship with her co-worker, and Tristan becomes stubborn in his response to the misunderstanding. That is definitely Tristan’s character flaw. However, Bexley, as the strong female heroine, is able to use her understanding of Tristan to pull him back to her. It’s probably my favorite part of the book. Quite frankly, given Bexley’s background with men, she could have walked away from Tristan. However, D. Kelly creates a indestructible relationship through Tristan and Bexley’s indestructible friendship. This is the core of this book. This understanding that a true friendship first in a relationship can build an even stronger love commitment.

This was my first D. Kelly read, and it will definitely not be my last. Yes, this book had some angsty moments, but they never overwhelm the reader. Instead, watching Tristan and Bexley, best friends, fall in love on the page made this reader sigh and remember the power of love. If you love a “friends-to-lovers” type of read, you can’t go wrong with reading D. Kelly’s Dating Roulette. It’s time well spent.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Just Kidding, Book 1, SWAT Generation 2.0 Series

Let’s do a calendar, they said. It’ll be fun, they said.
Well, they—i.e. Kilgore Police Department’s public relations specialists—were wrong.
Now, every time Dax Tremaine walks around a corner, the women of Kilgore, Texas can’t help calling him Mr. January.
Mr. January, can you fix my flat tire? Mr. January, can you cuff me? Mr. January, can you sign my boob?
It goes from bad to worse when even on a SWAT call, the women won’t stay away.
***
It was the worst time of her life. Rowen Roberts had finally admitted to herself that the man she loved would never love her back. She was just fired from her job for violating client confidentiality, and to make matters worse, she’s held up at gunpoint in a convenience store where she only wanted some ice cream to help mask the pain.
The moment the gun is pressed to her forehead, she knows she has a decision to make. Follow the rules and maybe possibly live, or go down swinging where at least she can salvage just a little bit of her dignity.
And when Mr. January himself tells her to do what the gunman says, she’s had enough. Rowen has never really been a girl that does what she’s told. Mr. January won’t have to save her. She can dang well save herself.

Fries Before Guys, Book 2, SWAT Generation 2.0 Series

Sometimes people come into a person’s life and make their heart skip a beat. Those people are called cops. Well, one cop in particular. A SWAT officer for the Kilgore Police Department calendar. He was leaned back in his squad car, shirtless, and giving her a smile that was completely between them. A smile that hinted at what he wanted to do to her late. When she scrounges up the courage to ask him out after the photoshoot, he laughs in her face. Well, screw you, too, Mr. February.
***
Derek Roberts never really paid attention to the photographer. She was a mousy girl who dressed like a twelve-year-old girl. Her tight leggings, extra baggy Star Trek t-shirt denoting her a Klingon captain, and her surprisingly clean chucks didn’t leave much of an impression. Now, the outfit that she was in weeks after he rebuffed her. Yeah, now that caught his attention. ✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 3 ⭐️ Review: Claudia Burgoa’s Something Like Hate ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve had my eye on Claudia Burgoa for some time. She wrote a newsletter story, I believe, that grabbed my attention, and I read every month until its end. When I read the blurb for her newest book, Something Like Hate, I decided to go for it. Like a lot of romance readers, I love enemies-to-lovers, fake girlfriend stories. There is something exciting about an alpha male or female who initially hates (or heavily detests) the other main character in a story, but eventually, they fall for each other. And Something Like Hate offers a take on this story.

The story follows Claire and Miller. Claire works for Miller’s company, and she’s a top-notch employee. Miller knows this, as does his “right-hand man” Devon, who is Claire’s boss. The issue is they take advantage of Claire as an employee, and the work environment is sub-par. Miller and Devon are not great bosses. As such, Claire is very close to leaving the company, but she believes Miller’s company could help her meet her professional goals, so she’s conflicted on leaving.

Claire sets off on a much-needed vacation with her best friends. Unbeknownst to her, Miller is going to the same destination for his sister’s wedding. Miller’s mother pressures him about a girlfriend, going so far as to threaten to set him up with other women. Miller is not interested in this, so he decides to take a fake date with him to the wedding, Unfortunately, at the last minute, his date cancels, and he is left with a dilemma. Enter Claire who happens to be on the same flight, going to the same destination. Miller has always appreciated Claire’s talent, intelligence, and work ethic from afar, and he decides to ask Claire for the favor of playing his girlfriend for the wedding. After much propositioning, Claire concedes, and they pretend to be boyfriend and girlfriend. Until they become attracted to each other and decide to actually date at the end of the weekend together.

In the meantime, Miller’s company is trying to sign an important client, one whom Claire was handling before her vacation.  Thanks to another employee’s treachery, Miller leaves Claire alone and makes important decisions without her knowledge. Drama ensues, and Claire and Miller end. The story fast-forwards several years, and Claire and Miller meet again. Much has changed, but one thing has stayed the same: their chemistry. Will they find love again? Can Claire forgive Miller and move past his shortcomings? Those are the questions of Something Like Hate.

In reading the blurb for this story, I really wanted to like it. And for the most part, I did. Claire and MIller together is the best part of the story. They have a chemistry that jumps off the page. Individually, Claire is the stronger character of the two because Burgoa creates her as a strong woman who stands up for herself. Some would say she’s overly protective of her boundaries; however, I see her as an emotionally mature woman who defends her spirit and her ethics. Especially in contrast to Miller. Miller is NOT emotionally mature, as evidenced by his inability to stand up to his mother and his family, along with his dealings within his company. He is obviously the character who undergoes the most growth, another strength of this romance. I tend to love flawed heroes whose proximity to the heroine brings about their maturity and growth. And Burgoa definitely delivers this in her book.

Here is the thing with this book, however. It has issues with consistency, and that’s what I struggled with in the other story I read from Burgoa. Granted, that was a newsletter story, and those tend to be drafts. I get it. But Something Like Hate is supposed to be fairly fully formed, and I struggled with a few aspects of this romance:

  • At times, the dual POV was sloppy. What I mean by that is the chronology didn’t always line up between the two. When you write dual POV, you want consistency between the two, even if you have to re-tell certain moments in the story to capture that particular character’s understanding of that moment. The whole situation that occurs after Miller and Claire return from the vacation has issues in the story-telling. I found myself writing comments about confusion because the timelines between the POVs did not match up.
  • While I love Miller, he is inconsistent in his thoughts and feelings about Claire. He moves from being emotionally unavailable to adoring her, wanting a future with her. Yes, this is typical of an alpha hero; indecision can drive their story. However, Burgoa creates that indecision in such a way that I found him confusing at times. And his response to the situation after their time away together did not align with his thinking on vacation. It was too much of a deviance from his actions earlier that I didn’t believe that he’d react as he does. There is something contrived about Miller’s development that, at times, I didn’t believe him as a character. I think this underscores Burgoa’s issues with consistency in the story-telling and the character development.
  • Lastly the biggest moment of the story, the one that happens near the end of the book, when Miller makes a huge change for Claire, actually read as anti-climatic on the page. For one, Miller essentially goes silent towards Claire, which I didn’t believe. And secondly, he presents his resolution of her problem with little emotion built into it. I was hoping for a greater revelation or a more dramatic moment, and it felt underwhelming. This is a resolution, the falling action, and it simply needed more.

There is a lot of good in this book: the character types, the overall storyline, and the happy ending. I don’t want that to be lost in my review of Something Like Hate. Would I recommend rushing out to read this book? Probably not. There have been better “enemies-to-lovers, fake girlfriend” stories. However, if you’re a Claudia Burgoa fan, then you’ll want this book. I hate writing reviews that read as criticisms. I understand that each story is a “book baby” to its writer, and I hate disparaging said baby.  What I would recommend is simply more beta-readers or editors for a story like this one. Burgoa knows her characters, and her story has a lot of potential. But I think it could have gone through one more revision before birthing it into the world.

In love and romance.

✍🏻 Blog Tour & Excerpt Reveal: Roxie Noir’s Best Fake Fiance ✍🏻

BFF - BT banner.jpg

Faking it is easy.

Resisting her?

Impossible.

Best Fake Fiance, an all-new sexy and hilarious single dad romance from Roxie Noir, is available now!

Check out my 4.5 ⭐️ review HERE.rn_bestfakefiance_ebook.jpg

My life has room for exactly two women: my daughter Rusty and my best friend Charlotte — known to everyone as Charlie.

One is a feisty, tomboyish firecracker. The other is my seven-year-old. I can’t imagine life without either.

So when my ex springs a custody hearing on me, I find myself telling the judge that I’m engaged to Charlie.

The only problem? I’m not.

Time to fake an engagement.

Pretending we’re a couple will be no big deal.

We’ve been friends for years. We used to sneak cigarettes behind the bleachers. We turned cans of hairspray into flamethrowers. We got drunk on stolen malt liquor.

She’s beautiful, vivacious, spontaneous, and she loves my daughter to death. It’s the perfect answer: we fake it for a few months, then go back to our lives.

Until we touch, and sparks fly. Until I can’t take my eyes off her. Until I can’t stop thinking about what she’s got on under her coveralls.

It takes one kiss.

One touch.

One shared secret and suddenly, I’m not pretending anymore. I want her, I need her in ways I didn’t know I could.

But there’s a lifetime of friendship between us, and falling in love with Charlie could risk everything.

Excerpt:

“This is an intervention,” Eli says.

“For what?” I ask.

“For kissing,” Seth says, taking his place next to Eli, mimicking his stance. “Y’all are terrible kissers.”

Several thoughts all trip through my brain at once. Heat flushes my face. I take a step back.

“Neither of us is kissing you, Seth,” Daniel says, also crossing his arms over his chest.

“Don’t speak for the lady,” Seth says, suddenly grinning.

Next to me, I can feel Daniel’s whole body go rigid.

“The lady’s not kissing you either,” I say before Daniel can say anything.

“No one is here to kiss Seth,” Eli says, shooting him a look. “We’re here to help you kiss each other, because I’ve seen puppets kiss more convincingly than you two.”

A quick flutter of anxiety moves through my chest, waving through me like wind through a wheat field.

“What puppets have you been watching?” I ask, after a second.

“You can find some real weird stuff on the internet,” Daniel offers.

“Spoken like an expert,” says Eli.

“He’s not the one who brought up puppet porn,” I say. “Apparently, you’ve been watching—”

“Everyone quit talking about your perversions and focus,” Seth says, raising his voice. “No one is kissing anyone, except that you—” he points at Daniel, “are kissing her—” he points at me, “because you need people to think you’re actually engaged.”

The flutters are only getting faster, stronger, a gale force wind through the wheat fields because I really do want to kiss Daniel and I really don’t want to do it in front of his brothers, presumably while they shout helpful make out tips at us.

“They’re Eli’s perversions,” I say. “I’ve never even seen—”

“No one is leaving this room until you stop talking about puppets fucking and start kissing,” Eli says, firmly planted in front of the door.

Daniel just sighs.

“Is this because of yesterday?” he asks.

Despite being trapped in an attic and being told to kiss me or else, he’s somehow the calmest person here right now because of course he is. Daniel’s always the calmest person around.

“Yes,” Seth says.

“Obviously,” Eli confirms at the same time.

“I’d be the world’s shittiest brother if I saw that travesty and didn’t do something about it,” Seth goes on. “You,” he nods at Daniel, “have somehow gotten yourself into a ridiculous situation where you need to convincingly make out with her,” he nods at me, “to keep custody of your daughter, and you,” he nods at me again, “have inexplicably agreed to this farce. I agreed to do your taxes, by the way.”

“Thanks,” I say.

“And by God, Daniel, I’m not letting Rusty move to Colorado with the progeny of a demon and a swamp beast, so you better shut up and kiss Charlie.”

“No one kisses normally in front of cameras,” Daniel says. “Look, we kiss just fine. Yesterday there was a photographer saying something, practically everyone we knew was there—”

“Is it just me, Seth, or do those sound like reasons to practice?” Eli says, turning to his brother. “Call me crazy, but maybe they should get better at kissing in public instead of just hoping it never happens again.”

“I do believe you’re correct, Eli,” Seth says. The two of them are talking like they’re in an infomercial, and it might be the most irritating thing I’ve ever heard. “And since they’re not leaving this room until you and I are satisfied, they may as well get—”

“Fine,” Daniel finally says, then unfurls his arms and looks over at me. “Sorry,” he says, his voice softer, gentler.

“They do kind of have a point,” I say, even as my insides twist. “Yesterday wasn’t great.”

Finally, Daniel half-smiles, and he smiles at me, not his dumbass brothers, runs one hand through his hair in his nervous-and-trying-not-to-show-it gesture.

“It was pretty bad,” he admits.

“You jammed your nose into my eye,” I say, laughing.

“You bit my chin,” he teases.

“You—”

Eli clears his throat obnoxiously.

“Come on,” Seth says, spinning a finger in the air in the universal can we get a move on gesture.

I take a deep breath, turn to Daniel, quiet the flutters, and look up into his sky-blue eyes for a split second.

Then we kiss.
