✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Max Monroe’s The Billionaire Book Club ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

To Mr. Caplin Hawkins, Esquire:

Well, you did it. You did the thing that I didn’t want. I fell in love with you. Darn those authors Max Monroe. See, I thought I saw you in Turner and Milo’s books. You know, the cock-sure, jacka$$, overworked playboy. I wanted to read The Billionaire Book Club and continue to dislike you (well, not really dislike, maybe it’s “be reticent about you”) as a hero in a book. But those genius authors Max Monroe did it. They did the one thing I told myself not to do: do NOT fall in love with Caplin Hawkins. It will only lead to undying devotion. But you did it…and here’s why:

  1. You are too smart for your own good. Like really, really smart. I think you surpass Kline Brooks’s- level of intelligence at times. And that’s sexy. For a reader especially. We love a hero who has a brain that rivals his big….hot dog. You illustrate this in your ability to juggle that crazy life of yours.
  2. Your work ethic. Dang, a trust fund baby? And you wanted to earn your own way in life. Respect, man. Respect. Oh, and it’s a turn on for a man to forgo his family’s money to work hard for his own wealth. An incredible turn-on.
  3. You are unapologetically you. It doesn’t matter if you’re receiving phone calls about women’s va-jay-jays or faxes of women’s perky mounds, you take it in stride and own that “stuff.” It’s charming too. I want to hate you for that, but you make no apologies for it, and it makes your book (I questioned why they gave you a book initially…I get it now) a hilarious ride of epic inappropriate gestures. These moments you created with your “man-whorish” ways brought the funny to this book; the “bent-over-grabbing-your-gut-laughing-aloud” kinda funny. Max Monroe wasn’t lying; if you don’t want people to look at you funny in public, don’t read this book there. It’s not NSFPC (not safe for public consumption).
  4. And let’s talk about your choice of friends. It is those mother-fluffers who gave your book its color. I think anyone who reads your book, Cap, will want to join the book club. Unfortunately, since most of us aren’t billionaires, we recognize our entry into it…is problematic. However, if we all had the opportunity to talk about women (men) and romance and romancing women (men), then I think our lives would be better for it, as was so quickly apparent about you. Thank goodness for their wisdom and patience to wait you out for your time of realization. Even more, how amazing that they rescued you from yourself when you needed it. You can’t help but start to like a guy who has friends like yours. And you should really hold on to Thatch, even though he’s a bit of a PITA at times. That man’s tears were “life” in your book.
  5. I didn’t think you could be reformed. At. all. After the first part of your book where you were nonplussed to poor Liz’s superhuman skills as your assistant, and Vin’s willingness to accept your ability to ignore him. I believed you to be immutable. Until you weren’t. That first kiss with Ruby, the care put into that simple action, was heart-poundingly profound. I felt it from the top of my head to my toes, and I think you did too. Even more, it’s that moment in the book when I think you finally began to realize that you needed her beyond the workplace, that she relieved an ache in your soul. On that dance floor is the first time, I saw some real Cap. From there, your moments of tenderness began to draw me in. The way you looked at her; the care you took in using those books to “woo” her showed me that you might be redeemed. Then, you messed up, and I questioned my sanity in liking you. But there was something different about you after that moment, something I liked. Even though I wanted to throw my phone and its Kindle app across the room against the wall, your brokenness engaged me and kept me in your story. And you didn’t disappoint. In the least. The resolution of this story is the moment when I finally dropped my walls and allowed myself to love you deeply, even more than your friends, Milo and Trent, which comes as a surprise because I loved their stories a whole lot. But your change, your tears, your heart on full display for everyone to see made me change my mind about you. There is only one other thing about your story, however, that makes it perfect.
  6. Her name is Ruby. Why I went from begrudgingly reading your story to embracing you is your woman. You are one smart man to figure out that she is much better than the “average bear,” woman. Well, she’s amazing. I love that she keeps you on your toes, that she challenges you because you need a woman who loves you but isn’t always “in like” with you. She brings normality to your life in her ability to push back against your narcissism and crazy. I think my favorite moment in her portion of the story (I actually cried a little at this moment) occurs when her mother finally recognizes the strength of her daughter (and can we talk about her parents? Funny. Mark Rockford needs his own Netflix comedy show). Ruby is the type of woman we all want to be, and your recognition of it made me love you more.

So, Caplin Hawkins, kudos to you for winning me over. I know Max Monroe should be given the credit for making me fall in love with a playboy, but then again, I think they write to the cadence of my brain. It’s so eerie to read their books like they’re psychic. Now don’t get a big head when I tell you that I picked up your book the minute it hit my Kindle (forgoing several other books which will remain nameless), and I didn’t put it down until I finished it. There was just something about your story that fed my soul. I don’t know. Maybe it’s ultimately because this book is so inception in that it has books in a book or maybe it’s that I loved your growth into a more decent human being (you still have some growth to do) or maybe it’s that you loving Ruby was the best part of my day or maybe I love that you call her “doll” and I don’t find it sexist. But I think the real reason I broke down my walls to fall in love with you and your story, The Billionaire Book Club, revolves around one simple reason: you are quite simply “the good kind of crazy.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Patricia D. Eddy’s Fighting for Valor ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Patricia D. Eddy came into my reading life accidentally. I periodically sign up to read ARCs through a service as a way to find new authors. I receive an ARC copy of a book, and I offer “an honest review” in return. I came to her with her Away from Keyboard series with Ryker and Wren’s book. The way that she created romantic suspense that left me on the edge of my seat whether in the bedroom or in action grabbed me. Even more, her ability to craft a hero who seems so broken that no one can connect with him pulled at my heartstrings. When Wren finally connects with Ryker, I was done. Finito. Eddy had me “hook, line, and sinker.”

Then, she did it again with Dax and Evianna’s story. And again with Ford and Joey’s book. It doesn’t matter if she offers new characters and situations; I gobble her words, usually in one sitting. She has this skill of characterization and storytelling that engages you from the beginning to the end. She crafts moments where your heart is pumping, worried that the hero or heroine won’t make it through the tense, dangerous situation and back into the arms of their soul mate. It’s that fear, that tension, that drives her stories. Underneath it all, you hear the moral: brokenness does not exclude love. While her characters find this bit of truth in extreme situations, this message resonates with her readers: you can be a lot or a little broken and love can still find you, if you’re open to it.

With Fighting for Valor, Eddy’s newest offering, that message is central; it’s explicit. In Ryker, Dax, and Ford’s book, her readers are familiar with Ripper, the com specialist. In the first two books, we believe him dead. Until he isn’t, as we realize in Ford’s book. For six years, Ripper has been held captive and brainwashed into a different identity. He’s been tortured, abused, manipulated, and broken. His memories of himself as Ripper or Jackson Richards are so faint that they come to him quietly in his dreams. One day, he is rescued, and he must find himself again except the years of abuse threaten to derail any future. He meets Cara on the street one night, a woman who holds her own secrets and “brokenness.” Their souls call to each other, and they find comfort together when they cannot find it anywhere else. Unfortunately, Cara’s secret threatens to undermine their burgeoning love. Can Ripper push through his broken pieces to save Cara? That’s the storyline, and it’s a big one.

What sets Fighting for Valor apart from the other books in the series is Ripper’s background. Eddy warns you in her author’s note at the beginning of the book that she has to take the first 12 chapters to provide us Ripper’s story. It’s so well told that you cannot help but fly through it. If you are someone who isn’t a fan of backstory, be forewarned; it’s a big part of Ripper’s book. Personally,  I loved it. If you haven’t read any of the other books in the series, you might consider it tedious, but I doubt it. Eddy crafts all of the major feelings through Ripper’s story: horror, anguish, frustration, and worry. Ripper’s story isn’t a pretty one, and it might trigger folks with abuse in their background. But providing us with his story is necessary to see his growth through the story progression.

When he finally meets Cara, he has struggled to make connections even with his “brothers,” Ryker and Dax. He has isolated himself, but Cara’s ability to bring him comfort when no one else can makes her the treasure of this book. I loved that she could “see” Ripper. That she could empathize with him out of her own personal struggles and provide him with ways to begin healing. As a character, Cara is equal parts vulnerable and strong. One minute, she’s cowering and the next she’s ordering Ripper into comfort. I love that her brokenness matched to his makes them complete, and I think it’s the reason that Fighting for Valor is my favorite of the Away from Keyboard series to date. Easily, my favorite.  Oh yeah, and there’s a dog in this story. An amazing one. Dogs always make the story a little better.

Eddy’s style is fluid; it’s visceral; it’s real. As I stated earlier, you will finish this book in one sitting if you allow yourself because her storytelling draws you into a world of danger and love. The men of her series love deeply once they allow themselves to, and I think it’s a lesson to all of us that making one’s self vulnerable to be loved brings greater joy than the pain of trauma. Even if you haven’t read the other books in the Away from Keyboard series, you can pick up Fighting for Valor today, and you won’t miss anything. But you would miss out on reading the beauty of Ripper and Cara’s love and the start to their healing as they love each other through their broken pieces. Read Patricia D. Eddy’s newest book, Fighting for Valor

val·or: great bravery in the face of danger, especially in battle

Once, Jackson Richards had it in spades. As a member of the United States Special Forces, he fought alongside the bravest and most capable men he’d ever known.

Then one mistake landed them all in Hell.

For six months, he fought. But one terrible day, his captors learned the full extent of his skills, and that sealed his fate.

Tortured and broken for endless months in conditions that made Hell look like a five-star resort, Jackson Richards died, and Isaad was born. Shaped into a weapon for the wrong side, he’d forgotten who he once was. Who he was meant to be.

Until the days his captor imprisoned Joey Taylor.

Helping Joey and her marine escape reminded Jackson of the man he used to be. And now, he’ll fight. For himself. For the friends he thought he lost in Hell. And for Caro. The woman with a secret he can’t ignore.

If he’s strong enough, he’ll leave Isaad behind. Maybe then, he can take back his true name.

Ripper.

WARNING: This book contains scenes of torture and implied sexual violence that may be disturbing to sensitive readers

Ripper
The ride passes in silence, and I stare out the open side window, feeling the breeze on my face and smelling the sea. Ryker eases the truck to a stop on Roosevelt—only a little over a mile from the church. If I need to bolt, I can walk there.
It’s then I notice the sign. Emerald City Tattoo and Piercing. “What are we doing here?” My right hand reflexively goes to my left bicep, where my Special Forces tattoo used to be.
“Righting a wrong,” Ry says as he turns off the engine. His voice drops so low, I have to strain to hear it. “And maybe…finding something we all lost.”
Even though I’m not sure anything can right the wrongs from the past six years, I grab my rucksack and follow him inside.
“Dax?” He’s sitting on a bench against the wall, his folded cane in his hands.
As soon as he hears me, he heads right for us. “About damn time you showed up. I’ve been here half an hour.”
Ryker gives Dax a quick one-armed bro-hug, and even though they’re both clearly uncomfortable with the gesture, a part of me aches to be able to have that kind of physical contact again. But every time I think I’m ready, panic takes over. These are my brothers. The two people I’m closest to in the entire world. And I can barely manage to shake their hands.
Dax turns to me, and I swear he can see into the depths of my soul, despite being mostly blind. “Pick up the phone once in a while, asshole.”
I don’t respond, and Ryker reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a folded piece of paper. “Inara’s an artist. When she’s not killing people or translating boring legal documents into half a dozen different languages.”
Spreading the paper out on the counter in front of me, I freeze. It’s… “Holy shit.”
The Special Forces insignia, a crest with two crossed arrows bisected by a dagger and the motto—De Oppresso Liber—overlays an intricate design of a phoenix bursting from the flames. And encircling the entire design: ODA 212 Rip Dax Ry.
Tears burn, but I refuse to let them fall. Instead, I grind my fists against my eyes for a moment until I think I can speak again. Turning to my brothers, I realize I’m not the only one about to lose his shit in the middle of the shop. “Okay. Yeah. Together. Right?”
The relief on their faces breaks something inside me, and I let go. For a minute, I can shove my shame and fear aside. As Dax and Ry each put a hand on my shoulder, I return the gesture and let my tears fall for the first time since the plane landed in Seattle.
“Together,” Ry says. “Brothers. Always.”
Patricia D. Eddy likes to consider herself an unstoppable force. As long as there’s coffee. Then, the voices in her head come to life.

Her tales of werewolves, vampires and witches; Doms and subs; and battle-hardened, scarred military heroes feature characters so real, you’ll want to jump inside the pages of her books to be friends with them. Or just give them a hug.

When she’s not writing, she’s a professional freelance fiction editor and technical writer. On weekends, she loves to take on home improvement projects, especially if they involve power tools.

Patricia lives in Seattle with her husband and very spoiled cats. You can find Patricia all over the web, and she loves to hear from readers. Email her at patricia@patriciadeddy.com

My life is over.

I swore I would never work at the whiskey distillery with my last name on it, that I would never be a part of my father’s legacy. But when I graduated with my art degree and realized there were no jobs, the devil appeared, and I sold my soul, agreeing to work in the family business if he’d give me the art studio I’d always dreamed of.

It can’t be that bad, I thought.

Until I realized my new boss was Logan Becker.

The Becker brothers have a reputation for being trouble, and since I love trouble, it’s no surprise to me that I’m infatuated by that forbidden fruit the first day I walk into the distillery. That lean, whiskey-eyed, too-hot-for-his-own-good man hates me — and I can’t blame him. His family has been at war with mine for decades, and for good reason.

The Beckers and the Scooters are the Montagues and Capulets of Stratford, Tennessee.

But if he’s Romeo, and I’m Juliet? Well… we all know how that story ends — and for that reason, I tell myself to steer clear.

Because if my father finds out I’m falling for Logan Becker, my life actually will be over.

And Logan’s will be, too.

Neat is a stand-alone book in the Becker Brothers Series.

About Kandi:

Kandi Steiner is a bestselling author and whiskey connoisseur living in Tampa, FL. Best known for writing “emotional rollercoaster” stories, she loves bringing flawed characters to life and writing about real, raw romance — in all its forms. No two Kandi Steiner books are the same, and if you’re a lover of angsty, emotional, and inspirational reads, she’s your gal.

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a diehard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer, and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

EXCERPT

“We weren’t properly introduced,” he said as he closed the distance between us.

“Ever consider there’s a reason for that?”

He grinned, and I looked down at my clothes to make sure they hadn’t evaporated on the spot. Lord knew I felt like ripping them off.

“You don’t strike me as a runner.”

What the heck? Maybe I didn’t work out religiously—okay, at all—but I was in good shape. I lifted my chin. “Well, you strike me as a stalker.”

His eyes danced, but his mouth quirked down as if the accusation was a foreign one and he didn’t quite know what to do with it.

“Would you believe I happened to be in the neighborhood? Wanted to hear that Southern drawl again?”

“Not a chance.” I lifted my chin, and his eyes raked down the column of my neck. I flexed my fingers so as not to touch the skin where his look had singed me. I couldn’t do this. Feel whatever this was. “You’ve said hello. Now, I have work to do.”

I spun, and he caught me by the elbow. His breath on my ear raised every hair on my body. “See. A runner.”

Was he insinuating I was a coward? I whirled back around to set him straight and immediately regretted it. His face was inches from mine. I held my breath to keep from burying my nose in his suit. No one should smell that good. Not without a warning.

“I hope this isn’t your usual approach with women.”

Screw him and that gorgeous smile. It lit his whole face and made him even more impossibly handsome.

“They usually approach me.”

I rolled my lips together. “That explains a lot.”

“Don’t you want to know why I’m here?” His voice was so low that I leaned in closer to hear him. Another mistake. I was too close, all in his personal space.

“You want a proper introduction.” I thrust my hand out, creating some distance. “Vivian DeGraw. Though you already know that. Now goodbye.”

His fingers clasped my hand and squeezed. He didn’t shake, just held me in place. “Daniel Elliott. And this most definitely isn’t goodbye.”

“I find out the love of your life saunters back in town, searching you out, and you didn’t even bother to tell me! I’ve been down this road before, Cord, and if you remember, I got my ass burned, so excuse me for not wanting to make a second trip.”

“For fuck’s sake,” he rumbled, finally taking a step back, giving him room to lift those long, strong arms so he could rake his fingers through his sexy hair in frustration. “She’s not the love of my life. Did I love her at one point? Yeah. I’ve been up front about that with you. But I’ve also been up front about the fact that those feelings in me died a long time ago. I haven’t loved her in a long fuckin’ time, Rory.” Before I could object and point out it wasn’t that long ago, he continued. “What I felt for her when she showed up wasn’t love, it was obligation. You know that too.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me she was back?” I snapped, refusing to get my hopes up.

“Because I haven’t even thought about it!” he snarled. “Christ, Rory! She showed up, made her play at Alpha Omega, and I shot her the fuck down.”

My mouth dropped open in shock. “You… what?”

“I shot her down. And I did it in a way that she couldn’t misinterpret at all, baby. And if that hadn’t been enough, the way Linc, Xander, and Rox laid into her solidified my point. After I said what I needed to say, I walked away. And yeah, it pissed me off, but once I was done feelin’ that, I put it outta my mind and never went back to it. I’ve been too consumed thinking about you for the past seven goddamn months to even give her a second thought.”

Oh god. Okay. I really liked that.

“But… if that’s the case, why haven’t you kissed me?”

His chin jerked back in surprise. “What?”

“All those times recently I thought you were going to kiss me… you were right there, and I thought any second you were going to do it. Then you pulled back and walked away from me. If you weren’t thinking about her, why’d you do that?”

“Because you said all you could give me was your friendship,” he barked, throwing his arms wide. “Fuck, Rory. What the hell did you think I was gonna do, huh? Break the trust I’ve been workin’ my ass off to build back up with you? I’ve wanted you so long I don’t know how to feel anything else, but I couldn’t risk losin’ you again. Not when I just got you back.” His fingers went through his hair again as he grunted, “Jesus, what do you want from me?”

“I—” I quickly clamped my mouth shut as his eyes swung back to me.

“Jesus. Fuck me,” he said on a low, shocked grunt. “You wanted me to kiss you?”

My cheeks flamed with humiliation, but there was no point in denying it. I’d already dug the hole this deep; might as well keep going. “I tipped my face up and closed my eyes,” I said, reminding him of what happened in my parents’ living room. “When a woman presses close, tips her face up, and closes her eyes, just a heads-up, Cord, she wants to be kissed,” I finished on a snark.

His voice came out in a whisper as he repeated, “You wanted me to kiss you.”

“I thought you were going to, so yeah,” I admitted indignantly, “I wanted it. But now I—”

And that was all I got out before he moved, wrapped his arms around me in a vice grip, and slammed his lips down on mine.

Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That’s why God created central air, after all.

Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy–she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.

In addition to being a wife and mom, she’s also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books–romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it’s a passion…there’s a difference. Not that she’d expect a boy to understand.

Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.

A mind-blowing kiss, a phone call he never thought he wanted… Ally is about to fall in love. Twice.

Ally gets by on his looks. Avoiding responsibility and not tackling his dyslexia is second nature to him, but there’s one rule he’s stuck by: ignoring Scarlet Storm. Until a chance encounter in a hotel leads to an unstoppable kiss. Then shocking news turns his life upside down: A tiny newborn needs him.

Scarlet knows what she wants. She has long lusted after her teenage crush—her beautiful brother-in-law. When their passionate encounter is interrupted by news of a child he has fathered, all hopes of a hookup go out the window. Maybe it’s for the best, as she’s poised to take her career overseas.

Claiming the child and becoming a worthy father will take everything Ally’s got, but he won’t stop there. He wants Scarlet too. Yet a split-second decision will endanger his life, and the two people he loves the most could be lost to him forever.

Dr. Elijah Hawkins needs … something.

After his wife jumps headfirst into a midlife crisis, he’s left with his young son, Roman, and a lot of unanswered questions.

That something turns out to be a someone—Dorothy Mayhem, nursing student, patient transporter, reckless driver, and emu owner.

Dorothy studies humans, the neurotypical kind, through books and television. Then she emulates their behavioral patterns to fit in with her peers.

But nothing can prepare her for Dr. Elijah Hawkins.

Single dad.

Brilliant pediatric oncologist.

And the sexiest doctor at the hospital.

When his failed attempts at asking her out turn into a string of playdates with his son, Dorothy finds herself unexpectedly enamored with the boy and his father.

And that’s a problem, a huge one, because Elijah’s ex-wife is a famous plastic surgeon—and Dorothy’s idol.

Perfectly Adequate is a beautiful, hilarious, and heart-felt journey along the “human” spectrum.

About Jewel

Jewel is a free-spirited romance junkie with a quirky sense of humor.

With 10 years of flossing lectures under her belt, she took early retirement from her dental hygiene career to stay home with her three awesome boys and manage the family business.

After her best friend of nearly 30 years suggested a few books from the Contemporary Romance genre, Jewel was hooked. Devouring two and three books a week but still craving more, she decided to practice sustainable reading, AKA writing.

When she’s not donning her cape and saving the planet one tree at a time, she enjoys yoga with friends, good food with family, rock climbing with her kids, watching How I Met Your Mother reruns, and of course…heart-wrenching, tear-jerking, panty-scorching novels.
