The Billionaire Book Club Questionnaire

#1: Who is your least favorite character in the book?

Me—Caplin Hawkins. I am an absolute idiot.

#2: Who is your favorite character?

Gorgeous, addictive, insanely challenging Ruby.

She’s smart, driven, self-confident, and so beautiful, she makes my chest ache.

#3 What is your biggest takeaway from the story?

Ruby Rockford and I are meant to be.

I just have to prove it to her.

For the entirety of my adult life, I’ve been content.

Content in my single lifestyle, content in my stressful-but-extremely-successful job as the main corporate counsel for almost every Fortune 500 company in North America, and content in my playful, spontaneous ways.

I had no idea it was possible for someone to change my mind.

The endless women and work are no longer enough, and just as Ruby Rockford told me—it’s about time I grow up.

It’s going to take a strategic attack from more than a couple brilliant minds to win her affection, but luckily, I know exactly where to find the right guys for the job…

The Billionaire Book Club.

It’s safe to say that I, Caplin Hawkins, the man most women would call The Ultimate Player, have finally met my match, and man oh man, has my end game changed.

I’m coming for you, Ruby.

And soon, you’ll be coming for me, too.

Cap

Errands officially run and work and Hell-ary’s margs with the girls out of my fucking head, I settle into poker night with the guys.

This, right here, is exactly what I needed.

Just the guys, smoking cigars, and playing poker.

Smoke swirls above the green felt of the table as Thatcher Kelly knocks the ashy end off his cigar, puts it back in his mouth, and deals a round of cards.

I catch them under my hand as he throws them, placing them one by one into the palm of my other hand and studying what luck has dealt me.

This hand gives me a queen, a king, and a trio of shitty other random cards, but in my actual life, it’s a whole lot of really good shit.

I’m a happy guy with a job he loves, friends he can count on, and more money than I’ll ever know what to do with.

I don’t have to worry about making the mortgage every month, I don’t have a sordid past with demons to conquer and wounds to heal, and I get more pussy than the SPCA.

There are occasionally stressful situations that come with being the top corporate lawyer for nearly every muckety-muck in the country, but I thrive off the pressure. It feeds my need for adrenaline and puts a nice layer of padding on an already swollen ego.

Which is, frankly, just how I like it.

Confidence keeps my life balanced. If I weren’t confident in my abilities at work, I’d be spending this time poring over files instead of enjoying a game of poker with my rarely available, pussy-whipped friends. But I know myself, I know my tenacity, I know my willingness to work an all-nighter, and most importantly, I know a little free time for pleasure does the business part of my mind a whole lot of good.

Kline Brooks, Thatcher Kelly, Wes Lancaster, Milo Ives, Trent Turner, and Harrison Hughes sit around the table in front of me, arranging their cards and smoking their cigars in comfortable silence. Quincy Black and Theo Cruz couldn’t make it tonight—something about a baby and a new hip nightclub respectively—but as I understand it, they have a standing invitation to poker night as well.

When the last card is dealt, Thatcher Kelly, a numbers genius, friend, fellow billionaire, and client of mine, places his cigar in an ashtray and shoves back in his chair to make his massive frame look even bigger. Frankly, I’m the only one in this group of guys who even comes close to his size, but I’m still not a giant like him. At six foot three and just over two hundred pounds, I’m leaner, but I can still pretty much guarantee I’m the stronger of the two of us.

“Welcome, motherfluffers…to the official Thatcher Kelly Poker Night, trademark.”

I roll my eyes at his theatrics, and trust me, I’m not the only one. Thatch has been trying to get a poker night going for our group for months, and now that it’s finally happening, I’m not even a little surprised he’s treating it like the first night of the Olympics. “What happens here, stays here, locked away from the women, the men, the children in your lives. This is a sacred table, a sacred ritual, a sacred game, and you will respect it.”

“Jesus,” Kline Brooks, another client of mine, CEO of the popular dating app TapNext, and Thatch’s best friend in the whole world, mutters.

Thatch carries on, unaffected. “I know you have other things in your lives, and I’ll allow it, but from here forward, this biweekly game is to become your priority.”

“No,” Wes Lancaster, owner of the New York Mavericks and another one of Thatch’s best friends, remarks. “I’ll be here when and if I have time. Fuck your sanctity. And, for the sake of everyone’s sanity, let’s keep your text reminders of poker night down to one in the future.”

“You’re disrespectful and disappointing, Whitney. You should be happy I allowed you, a woman, to participate.” Thatch smirks. “This is supposed to be boys only.”

Wes holds up his middle finger and takes a puff on his cigar, and I jump in as a colorful referee.

“Relax, guys. I think what Thatch is trying to say is that he misses you guys. You’re all so busy with your pussy—”

“Hey!”

“Yo!”

“What the fuck?”

“I’d tread lightly…”

The chorus of responses is loud and overwhelming, but I shush them with a hand and continue. “That we never really get to hang out anymore. This is a chance to bond like men. To talk about things you can’t talk about at home. To relax and play poker and not give a fuck about anything else.”

“I’m pretty fucking relaxed at home,” Milo interjects, and unfortunately, the rest of the band of misfits nods in agreement.

“Well, fuck you guys very much,” I say with a sour laugh. “Do it for me, then.”

“Technically, they’re doing it for me,” Thatch corrects. “And I’d keep your voice down. If Cassie hears you say some of this shit, I’m not gonna hold her back for you.”

“Your wife is here?” I question with a groan. “I thought this was about the guys. A sacred ritual locked away from the women and children in your lives—”

“It is, it is,” Thatch interrupts with a sigh. “But Cassie wouldn’t let me come into the city to have poker night at our Manhattan apartment and leave her with the kids at the New Jersey house, so she got a sitter, and the girls are having a meeting in their space, all the way on the other side of the apartment. Don’t worry. This is the guys’ space. They know that.”

Manhattan apartment. New Jersey house. Talk about first world problems.

Thatcher Kelly has more houses and apartments than he has members of his family.

Not that I can’t say the same for myself, but that’s minor details.

I roll my eyes at his pathetic words. Cassie Kelly wouldn’t follow a directive given by her husband if it literally saved her life. She wears the pants in their relationship, and Thatch usually doesn’t deny it. Instead, he just presents her tits as evidence.

They’re great tits, I’ll give him that, but I play with my fair share of great fucking tits, and I do it without having someone holding my balls hostage in exchange.

“So, we should expect her to pop in within the next ten minutes, then,” I remark, and even Kline, the most adult of the entire group, snickers behind a hand.

“She’s not gonna pop in, okay?” Thatch booms. “Fluffing hell. It’s like you don’t trust—”

“Yoo-hoo!” his wife interrupts appropriately, peeking her head around the door of the smoky room. “You guys hungry, or are you too busy punching one another in the dick?”

Thatch sighs and closes his eyes as I give him a hard glare. The rest of the group breaks out in smiles. Thatch places his cards on the table and turns to look over his shoulder so he can meet his wife’s startlingly blue eyes.

“Honey, I thought we talked about this. Poker night needs separation from ladies’ night. Like church and fluffing state.”

“Well, excuse me,” Cassie replies pseudoangrily, opening the door fully to step inside, “for fluffing checking on the status of your big, ogre stomach. From here on out, I’ll let you starve.”

I bite my lip and lower my cards to the table before letting my head drop back as Thatch jumps up so they can bicker in closer proximity.

“Christ, woman! Did you get your annual exam today, or are you just raging for no reason?”

“Your exams are gonna be reduced down to annual if you don’t cool your fluffing jets.”

“My jets are cool!” Thatch shouts, and the rest of us groan as Cassie lunges forward and punches him…right in the dick.

Ah hell.

As annoyed as I am at him, my crotch throbs sympathetically.

Cassie storms off, and Thatch, hunched over in a ball of agony, turns back to the table. “I’ll be right back.”

Still almost fetal, he waddles through the opening at a surprisingly brisk pace.

As the door closes behind him, the other guys start to chatter.

“The rest of our lives, guys. It will be this way for the rest of our lives,” Kline mutters, and Wes laughs.

“Not if we cut him out of the friendship circle.”

Kline smirks but simultaneously rolls his eyes. “Like that’s possible. Try to cut that fucker out, and he’ll end up shadowing you during your colonoscopy.”

“I’m not scheduled for a colonoscopy,” Wes refutes with a laugh.

Kline clucks. “Ah, but you will be. That’s how ridiculous his power is. You won’t even know how it happened until he’s snapping on latex gloves and suiting up.”

Harrison Hughes, a longtime employee of my father’s media company HawCom and friend of ours, laughs. He’s a little older than I am, but I’ve known him long enough that it doesn’t feel like there was a time when we weren’t friends. He also played rugby with Wes, Kline, and Thatch for a while, and he still throws his old, dilapidated ass into a game in the park every now and then. But, as the only single guy left other than Theo and me, I’m fairly certain he does it all just so he has a way to impress the ladies. “Wait. He’s the doctor now? What the fuck?”

Kline shrugs and chuckles. “Trust me. After this many years of friendship, I don’t put anything past that guy.”

Wes nods begrudgingly. “He’s surprisingly adept at making just about anything possible. That’s how Lexi ended up interning for fucking Hugo Clouse. She’s a teenager, and he’s basically the Wolf of fucking Wall Street, without the cocaine and hookers.”

I laugh. “Geez. Where’s the fun in that?”

They all ignore me.

“How’s she liking it?” Kline asks.

“All those numbers?” Wes questions with a laugh. “She loves it. Pretty sure she’s going to be managing my hedge fund by the time she’s twenty.” Kline smiles. “Win’s feeling the blues, though. Says her baby is growing up too fast.”

Milo smiles, even though I’m not sure he’s ever met Wes’s stepdaughter, and I don’t miss the pathetic fucking longing that goes with it. The bastard’s been a fucking goner since he got involved with his best friend Evan’s little sister. Now, he’s engaged to be married and apparently ready to add some mini-Milos into the mix.

Wait a minute…

“Oh God,” I groan at him, throwing my head back dramatically. “Don’t tell me Maybe is pregnant already.”

“Is she?” Trent asks, his inflection going noticeably upward at the end. Because, unlike me, he’s excited.

Love-sick fools. The whole lot of ’em.

“No,” Milo says with a little smile. “I’m just thinking about the day she will be.”

“Ugh,” I groan, miming sticking a finger down my throat. “First of all, you just got en-fucking-gaged, you bastard. And secondly, are we really talking about women and babies during poker night? And not, like, the good part of women, like how well their pretty mouths can wrap around our cocks. But how lovely they are?”

Trent laughs. “Yeah, Cap. If you stopped sleeping your way through the entire city, you might find out why.”

I scoff. “Fuck that. I’m not like you guys. I like a plethora of pussy, and I like it often. I’m not gonna tie myself to one chick for the sake of…what? Insanity?”

Trent shakes his head, while Milo smiles behind his drink, the fucker. They’re absolutely convinced I’ll be just like them one day, twiddling my dick while some high-class chick shops with my money.

But they don’t know me like they think they do. I like my life the way it is. Full of freedom and fucking and anything else I want to do.

My time is my own, and my body, a free agent.

I get to sample the best of the best, over and over if I want or just take a taste. I have my cake, and I eat it too, and fuck anyone who thinks just because it’s the way of the world, I need to change my ways.

In fact, after today, there’s a new pussy on the horizon, new fun to be had.

The pretty blonde with the hot body at the library who apparently likes to listen to audiobooks that are reminiscent of some of sixteen-year-old Cap’s favorite pornos.

Goddamn, she was something. A petite little bombshell whose choice in listening pleasure has me more than intrigued.

She didn’t give me her name, but it doesn’t matter. I am a man who thrives off a good challenge, and I already know my future romp with her will be a better time than any of these fuckers has ever had.

And hell, who doesn’t love a good naughty librarian fantasy?

Certainly not me.

That pretty little librarian doesn’t know it yet, but she’s the new chase.

My new mission.

And I won’t stop until I’ve tasted her and fucked these guys and their monogamy right out of my damn head.

“Just … wow. The writing – wow. The story – wow. The journey and all those feelings it evokes -WOW.” ~Amazon Review

I wish I could give this more than 5 stars. … I think this story was the best so far in the series!!” ~Amazon Review

“This story will shred you to pieces but then it will put you together again in a beautiful way. I absolutely loved it and Ripper is now my favorite.” ~Amazon Review

val·or: great bravery in the face of danger, especially in battle

Once, Jackson Richards had it in spades. As a member of the United States Special Forces, he fought alongside the bravest and most capable men he’d ever known.

Then one mistake landed them all in Hell.

For six months, he fought. But one terrible day, his captors learned the full extent of his skills, and that sealed his fate.

Tortured and broken for endless months in conditions that made Hell look like a five-star resort, Jackson Richards died, and Isaad was born. Shaped into a weapon for the wrong side, he’d forgotten who he once was. Who he was meant to be.

Until the days his captor imprisoned Joey Taylor.

Helping Joey and her marine escape reminded Jackson of the man he used to be. And now, he’ll fight. For himself. For the friends he thought he lost in Hell. And for Caro. The woman with a secret he can’t ignore.

If he’s strong enough, he’ll leave Isaad behind. Maybe then, he can take back his true name.

Ripper.

WARNING: This book contains scenes of torture and implied sexual violence that may be disturbing to sensitive readers.
“You’re a piece of work,” I mutter to myself, and a quick inhalation from the sidewalk causes me to jerk my head around. Brown eyes meet mine, and the woman from the previous night freezes. In one hand, she carries her set of kitty cat brass knuckles, and in the other, a grease-stained bag.
“I…uh…b-brought you something,” she stammers as she climbs the first step and then stops.
“Hoping to bribe me into not axe murdering you?” She flinches and squeezes her eyes shut for a brief moment. “Bad joke. Sorry. But Ripper…really is my name. Or what everyone calls me.” I push up to sitting and rest my back against the church door. “And I’m not a charity case.”
“Didn’t say you were.” She thrusts the bag at me, and when I don’t move, drops it next to my hip. “We had extra. It’s rainy and kind of cold tonight. I thought…a hot meal might…shit. Never mind. Take it or leave it.”
She turns, and the scents of cheese and salsa waft up from the bag. “Wait a minute, sunshine.” Digging into the paper, I find an aluminum foil pan covered with a healthy serving of enchiladas lightly covered in cheese and red sauce, a half pint of refried beans, and a bag of marinated carrots and jicama. “This smells great.”
A hint of pride straightens her shoulders, and the corners of her lips curve into a half-smile. “Thanks.”
“You made this?” I grabbed a granola bar and an apple at my apartment, but my stomach rumbles at the prospect of something…so very different than my everyday diet. The first bite takes me back to my mama’s cooking, and I think I moan a little.
In the light of the street lamp, her cheeks glisten with the misty rain and turn a bright pink. “I work at a food truck. Today’s menu was Mexican comfort food.”
“My mama learned how to cook from my abuela, who grew up in Mexico. These are the best enchiladas I’ve had since I left Texas.”
She toys with a blue pendant hanging from a silver chain around her neck. Joy and sadness battle for control of her features, but joy seems to win in the end. “Thank you. That means a lot.”
A tendril of long brown hair plasters itself to her cheek as she stares down at her sensible black shoes. Her ankle’s wrapped in an ACE bandage, and as she fidgets, I can tell she isn’t putting all her weight on it. “You okay? After last night?”
“Oh. Yes. I should…go. Let you eat in peace.”
“Wait.” I don’t know why I’m stopping her. But the idea of her being hurt, and that I caused it, doesn’t sit well with me. “What’s your name?”
“Cara,” she says quietly.
“You live…uh…close?” Her eyes widen, and I kick myself. If she didn’t think I was a stalker or an axe murderer before, she does now. “I just mean…it’s wet out. And you weren’t the most graceful last night. I…be careful, okay?”
A scowl twists those heart-shaped lips, and she levels me with an acerbic stare. “I’m not the one sleeping on the streets with no defenses. And I’m very graceful. When I want to be. Good night, Ripper.” Her curtsey is a little lopsided since she isn’t putting her full weight on her right foot, but she turns on her left heel and starts limping away.

“‘Night, Cara.” As the rain intensifies and I dig back into the takeout container of enchiladas, I wonder why it’s easier for me to talk to a stranger than it is the men I consider my brothers.

Patricia D. Eddy likes to consider herself an unstoppable force. As long as there’s coffee. Then, the voices in her head come to life.

Her tales of werewolves, vampires and witches; Doms and subs; and battle-hardened, scarred military heroes feature characters so real, you’ll want to jump inside the pages of her books to be friends with them. Or just give them a hug.

When she’s not writing, she’s a professional freelance fiction editor and technical writer. On weekends, she loves to take on home improvement projects, especially if they involve power tools.

Patricia lives in Seattle with her husband and very spoiled cats. You can find Patricia all over the web, and she loves to hear from readers. Email her at patricia@patriciadeddy.com

About Mandi Beck:
Mandi Beck has been an avid reader all of her life. A deep love for books always had her jotting down little stories on napkins, notebooks, and her hand. As an adult she was further submerged into the book world through book clubs and the epicness of social media. It was then that she graduated to writing her stories on her phone and then finally on a proper computer.

A wife, mother to two rambunctious and somewhat rotten boys, and stepmom to two great girls away at college, she shares her time with her husband in Chicago where she was born and raised. Mandi is a diehard hockey fan and blames the Blackhawks when her deadlines are not met even though her favorite hockey player calls her…mom.

About Rochelle Paige:
I absolutely adore reading—always have and always will. When I was growing up, my friends used to tease me when I would trail after them, trying to read and walk at the same time. If I have downtime, odds are you will find me reading or writing.

I am the mother of two wonderful sons who have inspired me to chase my dream of being an author. I want them to learn from me that you can live your dream as long as you are willing to work for it.

When I told my mom that my new year’s resolution was to self-publish a book in 2013, she pretty much told me, “About time!”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: Siobhan Davis and S. B. Alexander’s Holding On to Forever ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I’ve recently been reading Siobhan Davis’s bully romance series, Rydeville High. Every book is a twisted tale of romance, greed, and star-crossed lovers set in high school. It’s oftentimes difficult to read because everything bad seems rained down upon the head of the main heroine. Davis’s newest book, Holding On to Forever, has much the same feel. Co-written with S. B. Alexander, this is an emotionally gripping romance of two college-aged students, Adam and Emily. Adam meets Emily one night when he sells her friend, Zach, drugs, namely Molly. See, Adam, the Cypress University quarterback, must sell drugs to make enough fast money to care for his mother and sister who has a debilitating disease. To be fair, he doesn’t want to sell drugs, but it allows him to make quite a bit of money quickly. On meeting Emily for the first time, there is an instant connection.

Emily is  Adam’s head coach’s daughter, unbeknownst to him at their first meeting. Her past holds a terrible secret that causes her to use drugs to anesthetize herself against the pain of it.  An unloving, opportunistic mother, an absentee father, and her secret conspire to derail her life through her use of drugs. Until she meets Adam. Even though Adam realizes quickly that he is inadvertently providing the drugs for Emily, he works to help save her from herself while buoying her up to save herself. In the end, he wants to love her enough for her to stop using it. Will Adam save her, will he save himself and his family, or will they break, unable to move beyond life’s trials? Those are the questions of Davis and Alexander’s book. And they are important ones.

Okay, I have to admit that I was intrigued by this story from the reading of its blurb. While I don’t profess to be a prolific romance reader, I have read quite a few romances in the past couple of years to warrant having a good understanding of typical romance stories. And this one, as far as I can tell, is different. A drug user falling in love with her dealer? Obviously, from my summary, it is much more nuanced than that. However, it is different, and you can’t help but be interested in the story.

Let me also say that there is MUCH more to this book than this basic storyline. Through this story, Davis and Alexander are pointing to issues of poverty, abuse in all its forms, date rape, drug abuse, and broken families. This book is loaded with story. Each character seems to represent a social issue. In my opinion, it’s the interesting, but also problematic part of this book. I think that there were so many different parts to the story that it sometimes undermines other aspects of the story. I hate to go into any detail because I don’t want to give away the book’s secrets. Yet, I can’t help but suggest that some of the storylines could have been revised out. Emily and Adam’s story alone is enough for this book.

In terms of its characters, Adam is a saint by most measures. That’s actually difficult to write given his role in the story. But it’s clear from the start that he feels responsible for providing for his family, and he will do anything to fulfill that role. With that, there are actions he takes in the book that are morally ambiguous. Necessary for survival, but worrisome. That he knows they are morally problematic AND compromise Emily’s sobriety makes him the saint. He can be headstrong which is his downfall. He fails to include his roommate/best friend in his troubles, causing problems for himself. In trying to fix his family’s problem on his own, his actions seem short-sighted in the context of his future. Yet, he loves Emily deeply. With the exception of one moment in the story of their relationship, he is protective and adores her. The love she has failed to receive from her home life comes from him, and it becomes some of the impetus for her eventual healing. Adam is strong, insightful, and a foundation for Emily to build her hopes on.

Now, Emily is a difficult one to assess. Her character alone represents many of the social issues of the story. Encompassed in her is the problem, and, quite frankly, the solution. It, however, takes her most of the story to get there. Like any addict, she self-sabotages throughout much of the book. I think it’s important to read this type of heroine, though. Most characters in modern romance become their own biggest issue. And Davis and Alexander seem to be pointing to this trait of the genre. It really doesn’t matter that she’s an addict. She could be an assistant to a billionaire or the billionaire herself and still make poor choices in a romantic relationship. What Davis and Alexander have done, though, is point us to a social ill: addiction. They could have created a heroine who self-sabotages in more traditional romance genre ways, but they didn’t. They took the opportunity in this book to illustrate for us the difficulties of addiction and its impact on families. This is the power of this book. It is more than a romance; Holding On to Forever is a story of healing and becoming who you are meant to be.

This book can be difficult to read. It handles drug addiction, abuse, poverty, and broken families in some ugly ways. However, the ending has a huge payoff. You feel as though you’ve lived a long life when you finish this book, but it’s so fulfilling because the growth of the characters is tremendous. Holding On to Forever is a book that all of us should read, as it challenges what it means to find and fall in love in the midst of trauma.

In love and romance,

Professor A

ADAM

Returning to my drug-dealing past wasn’t on the agenda when I accepted the full ride to play ball at Cypress U. But Mom lost her job. And my sister’s medical bills are mounting. So, I’ve no choice but to change the playbook.

When Emily walks into my life, like a fallen goddess with the ultimate power to destroy me, I know I’m screwed. I should steer clear, but I’m the one supplying her poison of choice. Falling for her is a complication I don’t need, but the more she’s around, the harder it gets to walk away. She needs me, and I crave her more than the sport I love.

Now, it’s all on the line. Including the NFL career that’s tantalizingly close.

The stakes are high, but family means everything, so I’ll take my chances.

EMILY

It’s only a problem if it’s out of control. And I have it in hand.

Except a certain a-hole discovers I’m using again, and he threatens to rat me out to my folks. Mom’s president of Cypress U, and Dad’s the illustrious football coach. Appearances mean everything to them, and I’m a continuous disappointment.

They told me I’d be out on my ass if I fell off the wagon, so keeping it a secret is my number one priority.

Until the super-hot all-star QB takes more than a passing interest in me. Adam gets me, in a way no guy ever has, filling my head with ideas of forever—and now, I want more.

Dating my dealer is a recipe for disaster, especially when it’s forbidden, but I can’t help myself.

Because I’ve fallen too deep.

And the hole is too large to crawl out of.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Layla Hagen’s Always with You ✍🏻

Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“He awoke something inside me that no one else had before.”

Reading a Layla Hagen book is like pulling a blanket over your shoulders while sipping a cup of tea on a cold winter day. You know that you will encounter sweet characters, a storyline that offers a bit of tension but is really more about telling a story of two individuals falling in love, and it will be steamy. Always with You is Hailey Connor’s story. Like the other Connor siblings, her book is that warm blanket on a cold day. It features an independent heroine, a bit of a broody Mr. Darcy-like hero, and a happy ending. And it’s delicious from beginning to end.

To say that I had been looking forward to Hailey’s story is an understatement. “Always the bridesmaid but never the bride,” Hailey has spent much of the Connor stories relegated to little sisterhood. Keeping secrets for her siblings, running interference when necessary, and helping siblings such as Jace through PR situations explains her place in those books. But I knew that her story would be the best, and it was.

Hailey works for one of the preeminent PR firms in Los Angeles. She’s a pro, a top agent in her firm. She receives kudos for the ways she has helped many of their clientele. She is called in to help Reid Davenport, a young wealthy hotelier who has found himself in a PR debacle with an opportunistic, gossip-loving ex-fiancee. Not liking public attention, Reid hopes, if he ignores it, that the bad press will go away, and he can return to his very organized, staid life. Unfortunately, his ex is intent on keeping him in the spotlight. Hailey offers her help, but, initially, Reid is reticent. He is also incredibly attracted to Hailey from their first meeting. When the press begins to affect his family, he decides to allow Hailey to intervene. Very quickly, these two cannot deny their attraction to each other, but there are consequences to it, consequences that could potentially derail Hailey’s bright PR future. Can Reid and Hailey make a “go of it?” Do they find their happy ending? Remember, this is a Layla Hagen book, so happy endings are her currency.

“And the way she looked at me, as if I was the only man in this world for her, slayed me.”

With the last Connor Family book, Jace’s story, I might have mentioned in my review that the trouble in that story felt a bit contrived. I’m always worried when I offer a critique because I am not a writer by trade. In reading Hailey’s book, though, the story was organic. It made sense that Hailey’s career could be put into jeopardy given her relationship with the wealthy hotelier. As her job is to help control and repair the perception of celebrities in the media, dating someone who figures into the media landscape could cause Hailey credibility issues especially when said celebrity/high profile client doesn’t allow his story to be told. Hagen makes this believable throughout the story. When it causes a rift between the two of them, there is true tension that Hagen carefully resolves by the end with the sweetest happy ending for these two.

For all of his broodiness, Reid is the quintessential hero. He’s wealthy, driven,  and handsome. What makes him a better hero is his love and interest in Hailey. With the exception of a tiny bit of trouble in their relationship, it’s clear from the start that he only has eyes for Hailey. He seeks to love her in the way she needs. Even more, Hagen uses Reid as a lesson. Reid struggles with dyslexia profoundly. And Hagen, through Reid’s characterization, shows us the challenges of this disability. To handle his disability,  Reid creates structure in his life so that he has the time to be prepared for his job. Unfortunately, that structure can be all-consuming creating some of the tension later in the story between the two.

However, it’s Hailey’s zest for life and adventure that allows Reid to become more flexible, more adventurous. She becomes the catalyst for his change. In doing so, she burrows into his heart and soul. Hailey is the sweet to his sour, and Hagen does a superb job of building their “opposites attract” relationship into one that can withstand the challenges of life.

“I loved her confidence, the way her love for life shone in every word. It made me want to change my ways for her, or at least try—it wasn’t in my nature to be flexible, to change.”

Layla Hagen’s stories, while sweet and comfortable, come with lessons. They aren’t meant to be ground-breaking truths. Instead, they are reminders to the reader that life is best lived with love. Always with You is a suggestion that we need to let go, we need to seek out love with the person who feeds our soul and challenges us, and we need to accept them just as they are. The end of this book was bittersweet, as I’m not sure there will be another Connor story, and I know that I will miss this family very much.

“‘We can make everything work,’ she whispered. ‘We will. Because my place is right next to you, Hailey Connor.’”

In love and romance,

Professor A
