✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Jewel E. Ann’s Perfectly Adequate ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do you ever read a romance that makes your heart race, you feel it pounding heavily in your chest? It isn’t that it’s $exy, although that happens too. It’s that you see the potential of the characters and know that the journey ahead isn’t an easy one. That’s a typical feeling when reading a Jewel E. Ann book. She thrives on creating stories and characters that are complicated and whose journeys are anything but straight. She oftentimes puts labels on her books: romantic suspense, rom-com, etc. Yet, those labels never do the book justice because they are too reductive to what she does. Which leads me into her newest offering, Perfectly Adequate

Labels. Honestly, Jewel E. Ann suggests that Perfectly Adequate is a rom-com. While there are definitely those elements, this book, like many of her others, doesn’t really that fit that label fully. And it’s interesting because that is one of the many messages of this book: labels. Dorothy Mayhem, the heroine of this romance, is an “Aspie:” someone living on the autism spectrum. First of all, I LOVE that Ann brings us a heroine who is unique, difficult to fit into the typical “heroine” type. This is the second character I’ve read on the spectrum, and it opens the typical hero/heroine trope. With her “label,” Ann points to the way in which having the label of Asperger’s doesn’t fully account for Dorothy’s personality. When she finds the hero, Elijah Hawkins’s stash of books on autism, she questions his interest in her label because she rejects it as being a complete representation of herself. Even more, she pushes him to see how any label pulls us further from humanizing people. This book, in much the same way, does the same. It takes this message to its core in its presentation. Yes, there are moments of laughter, yet there are just as many moments of tears, anger, and frustration (at least that was the case for me). Dorothy Mayhem’s character is a vivid reminder throughout this story that labels reduce the true nature of a person. It’s a poignant message, a reminder, that being human is all we need for humanity.

Beyond her discussion on labels, Jewel E. Ann’s craftsmanship of Julie moved me more than the romance on the page. She received my most visceral reaction. Reading her was like looking into a mirror at times, and it was weighty. As I am a woman in her late 40s, Julie’s struggles with loving herself beyond marriage, career, and child resonated with me. The struggle to understand feelings of unworthiness and anger and displacement found purchase in my soul, and it was uncomfortable. To be honest, as a whole, Julie makes me uncomfortable because reading her on the page was like looking in a mirror. And it was painful at times. I wanted to stop reading the story because her thoughts and feelings in some ways are similar to my own. This connected me more deeply to this story. It’s difficult to imagine that people serve a certain capacity in our lives for a time, and I think Jewel uses the character of Julie to illustrate this.

But the best part of Perfectly Adequate is Dorothy and Elijah. It’s Elijah’s acceptance of Dorothy’s humanity, that she is “okay” and “perfectly adequate,” that shaped my impression of him. His ability to “see” her offers some of the most poignant moments in this book. Jewel E. Ann gives him some of the most beautiful words because, more often than not, she places few words in the voice of Dorothy. The contrast of these two in that respect is the beauty of their relationship, of their journey. Their chemistry, Dorothy’s sacrifice for Elijah, his soul connection to her, their awkward moments transpire to pull you through the best and worst times of their story, landing safely in a happily-ever-after.

Finally, what buoys the fandom that surrounds Jewel E. Ann and her books is her writing, the literal words on the page. As I was reading Perfectly Adequate, I highlighted like mad and took notes on page after page of this book. From almost the start of the book, she creates these moments that are viscerally profound. More specifically, she has this ability to make your body react to her characters and her story. I felt my heart pounding, my blood rushing, my stomach crawling, and my heart swelling at different moments in the story. Especially as Dorothy and Elijah struggle with their reality, my emotional reactions were palpable. This is Jewel’s brilliance as a writer. Whether it’s Perfectly Adequate, Jersey Six, or the Transcend Duet, Jewel E. Ann’s ability to evoke the emotion that connects us to her characters is her genius. Honestly, it was why I was reticent to start this book. I knew that, through Dorothy and Elijah’s story, I was going to have to feel deeply because Jewel’s writing does that to me. It’s a beautiful type of emotional torture.

If you love beautiful words, beautiful images, and a beautiful story, then you NEED Jewel E. Ann’s Perfectly Adequate. This romance reminds us that our humanity rests in being our best selves. Dorothy Mayhem is truly one of the best heroines you’ll read, and she’s a necessary reminder that we are more than our labels.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5⭐️ Review: Jolie Vines’s Oh Baby ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What gives you purpose? What guides you, helping you find your path? In the Marry the Scot’s world, Callum, the oldest McRae, seems to be the one who guides everyone. Until he can’t. But what do you do with your struggle with a devastating learning disability? What happens when your family, to a certain extent, enable you to not effectively handle your learning disability? What is there for your future? In Jolie Vines’s newest book, Oh Baby, to a certain degree, this is the youngest McRae brother’s plight.

Alaistair McRae has, for lack of a better word, been a bit of a flibbertigibbet through much of his life. You can rely on him in the earlier books of the Marry the Scot’s series to bring the humor and the adventure to the page. If you’ve read the series, you’ve seen him seek to follow in the footsteps of his older brothers when it comes to women, seen him almost die during a competition that goes awry, seen him struggle with his horrific dyslexia causing his brothers, namely his twin, to take his place for anything written, and you’ve seen him “cut up”, act brash, and keep his older brother “on his toes.” If you could give Alastair “Ally” McRae any superlative, it would be “most irresponsible McRae brother.”

Yet, Vines crafts a story for him that shows an Ally who is forced into “adulting” and who does it beautifully. In her newest book, Oh Baby, Ally finds out that he is the father of a baby. He isn’t made aware of the baby until after she is born, and he “moves mountains” to become her father. In the midst of challenging the courts and a “family member” of the birth mother, Ally begins a relationship with Scarlet Storm, Mathilde’s younger sister (Mathilde is Callum’s wife – their story is the first book in the series). These two situations, along with a serious life-changing incident in his life, conspire to grow Ally into the man he is always meant to be. I have said it previously in my reviews of the books in this series that a particular brother was “now” my favorite. But honestly, Ally McRae is my favorite, and I think Jolie Vines intended it that way.

First and foremost, Ally is the dirtiest McRae brother. I don’t usually comment on the $exual prowess of a particular character in my reviews, but Ally is a dirty talker and a dirty doer. He will curl your toes in the best of ways. Together, Scarlet and Ally are combustible. It adds some lightning to this story.

Secondly, like his brothers, Ally loves big. Yet in this story, that love isn’t just towards his heroine. And quite frankly, Scarlet is worth his love. It’s what I love about all of the books in this series. The heroes never vacillate in their love for the heroine. Any angst in these stories comes with the storyline or a threat to the family (that is the most usual). In Oh Baby, what makes Ally special and elevated above the other heroes in the series is his love for his daughter. The moment of their meeting will twist your heart and wrench tears from your eyes. Vines crafts moments between him and his daughter that are palpable and heart-rending. He could very well allow others to raise her, but he takes on his responsibility like a mantle. And that struggle, his battle, beyond his adoration of Scarlet, is the best part of this book. You feel his anguish when he’s separated from his daughter, and you become angered when it is threatened. Vines’s words twist you up and make you feel Ally’s pain. As such, Ally’s “big love” is the center, the core, of this book.

Additionally, Ally’s journey, I think, is the most profound of the brothers. In my questions at the beginning of this review, we see his challenges. What is Ally’s purpose? How does he overcome his disability to provide stability for his daughter, for Scarlet? If Ally’s big love is the core of this book, his journey is the vessel to illustrate it. Vines’s articulation of Ally’s growth is central to understanding his story. The only other character competing for his level of growth is James (from the second book), but, honestly, I think Ally has him beat. And I love that. I appreciate that Vines gives us the most complicated character last, and it illustrates her growth as a storyteller. Finding his place in the McRae family and firmly rooting himself in adulthood is necessary for Ally, and this is done so well in Oh Baby.

I don’t want to be remiss in discussing Scarlet. Like Ally, she has undergone a drastic change from the first book of the series until now, having gone to college and begun pursuing her career. Yet, like Ally, she experiences changes that you don’t expect at the beginning. Watching her advocate vehemently for Ally is one of the highlights of their story. Together, they are magic, and it was bittersweet in the book’s finality.

Honestly, I finished this book a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been sitting on this review simply because I hate to see the Marry the Scots books end. Jolie Vines has hinted to the 2.0 version, the next generation. There is a part of me that hopes for it because I will miss this clan dearly. Yet, there is another part of me that needs to let them go, let them live their happily-ever-afters in my mind. Jolie Vines’s writing has grown so much from Storm the Castle until now with Oh Baby. Thanks to her masterful characterization and storytelling, along with her delicious heroes, she has brought a new voice to the world of romance. You really should read this series. It definitely won’t disappoint you.

Dates and random hookups don’t help, because no one measures up to the girl I still love with my whole heart.

✍🏻 Staci Hart’s Bad Habits series has a New Look! Grab them Today! ✍🏻

The Bad Habits Series has a new face and I am here for it! Staci Hart has recreated such stunning covers for the series and I can’t get enough. You can grab all three of these books, LIVE on Amazon, today!

With a Twist | Chaser | Last Call

Love is somewhere near the bottom of Lily Thomas’ list of life goals, right next to competitive eating and underwater cave diving. She’s spent six years pirouetting and pliéing her way up the ranks of the New York Ballet with her eye on the prize and love in the back seat. But now that Blane Baker — Lily’s long time crush — is finally single, she’ll throw her rules out the window without thinking twice.

Reality with Blane isn’t as epic as the fantasy she imagined, and the truth sends her spinning straight into the arms of the man she never knew she’d always wanted.

West Williams has been friends with Lily since the day she moved into their building and he saved her armoire from a swift, sudden death by staircase. Their friendship has always been easy, the boundaries clearly defined. With neither of them willing to risk their relationship, they’ve drifted happily through the years as companions, never considering more.

That is, until they do. And that realization changes everything.

With a Twist is a standalone romantic comedy and part of the Bad Habits series.

Everyone knows you should never say never.

Cooper Moore never saw Maggie Williams coming. She was just his best friend’s little sister, the curly-haired, freckle-faced girl from Mississippi who was absolutely off limits. And he never thought about her any other way — not until he saw her that night, broken and brave. From that moment on, he knew he’d do whatever it took to protect her, even if it meant he had to stay away.

Maggie never expected to find her fiancé banging her maid of honor an hour before she was set to walk down the aisle, but life’s funny that way. The only option to save her sanity is to get the hell out of Jackson and move to New York where her brother lives. The only downside: Cooper is there too. And she just doesn’t know if she can stay away from him — the filthy rich, dead sexy playboy who’s allergic to commitment.

The second Maggie sees him again, she realizes he’ll be impossible to resist. Luckily, commitment is the last thing on her mind, and Cooper is the perfect escape. As long as she can keep her heart in check, everything will be just fine. Because she can never have feelings for him. Or at least that’s what she’ll keep telling herself.

Chaser is a bestselling standalone romantic comedy and second book in the Bad Habits series.

Once Rose Fisher makes a decision, that’s it. End of story.

Like when her ex, Patrick, dumped her out of the blue, then showed up with a super hot, tatted up sex kitten on his arm. Then it was over for good. The end. Poof. Dead to her. Except he was everywhere — down the hall, at the bar with their friends, worming his way into her dreams.

But with their friends paired off, they’re left alone more and more. Rose is determined to keep him friendzoned — doesn’t matter that he stares at her with a smolder that drops all panties in a ten foot radius. She’s over him, and she’ll prove it by getting back into the dating game, Patrick be damned.

Patrick Evans is no stranger to consequences. When your mother walks out, your dad drifts away. When you leave home, you’re on your own. And when you run away from the girl you love, you lose her. He finally has an opportunity to rebuild the bridge he burned, and it’s not one he’ll take for granted. But he’ll have to fight for her, even if it hurts. Even if it means he’ll walk away brokenhearted. Because deep down, he knows that she’s it for him.

The trick will be to get her to admit she feels it too.

Last Call is a bestselling standalone romantic comedy and third book in the Bad Habits series.

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life — a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can’t forget that. She’s also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She’s been a wife, though she’s certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She’s also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she’s been drinking whiskey. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

Like most guys I have a type— she wasn’t mine. Not at all.

The angelic beauty on the dance floor has innocence written all over her. But I can’t
stay away. And when she runs from me, leaving me wanting more, I can’t get her out
of my head.

Turns out finding her won’t be too hard. My mystery virgin is the new marketing

She wants to lose her virginity and she’s come to me for one thing, and one thing
only. I’ll gladly help her out, but we have to be careful no one discovers us.

The last thing I need is for my boss to find out I’ve been teaching his baby girl all my
dirtiest plays.

But I didn’t get to be MVP by playing by the rules.

Excerpt:

A chill skittered down my arms and to my toes until my body erupted in goose bumps. Hairs at the back of my neck stood on end. Someone was watching me.

I stopped moving so quickly I bumped into Gina and reached out to keep her from falling onto the dance floor.

“Sorry!” I called out, but I didn’t look at her as she resettled to her feet.

My gaze was focused, skipping from the men on the dance floor to the outer circle of guys who stayed close, probably couldn’t shimmy their hips to a beat if their life depended on it but enjoyed watching the show, to the stairs…the upper level.

Straight to him.

He was there. Hands curled around a silver railing. Buttoned up white shirt un-tucked from jeans and sleeves rolled to his elbows. Casual.

Commanding.

Long dark hair on top, swept to the side but long enough it could also fall into his eyes.

I simply felt his pull. Felt him.

I stood still and raised my drink in his direction.

His response was a nod. So minuscule it was difficult to see from the distance but even then, I knew he was the one watching me.

And if he wanted to watch? I’d give him the show of his life.

Two men flanked him, one shoved his shoulder, the other crossed his arms over his massive chest. The men were huge.

Yes. That was going to be him.

If he could gain my attention with a look from a hundred feet away, he was definitely the kind of guy who could do other things to me even more intensely.

Excerpt

If he was going to have inappropriate fantasies about an off-limits woman, it should be Ellie. But no, he’d gone and fixated on a reedy blond girl with a sharp tongue and eyes that seemed to look right through him.

He told himself he didn’t know why, but that wasn’t entirely true. She was sharp and determined. She spoke little, but when she did it mattered. And her loyalty to Ellie shone like a beacon.

All admirable qualities, but there was more to Xena Morgan, he was sure of it. And it was that mystery that intrigued him. Something raw. Edgy. He didn’t know exactly what was buried deep inside her, but he’d seen enough damaged people to know that her soul was at least as scarred as his.

But that didn’t make them compatible. On the contrary, that made them combustible.

And that meant that Xena Morgan was a complication he simply didn’t need. And the sooner he exorcised her from his thoughts, the better.

A burst of white light flooded the backstage area, and Liam realized with a start that rehearsal had ended. Ellie was leaning against a giant set piece, talking with one of the roadies, and there was no longer anyone standing in the wings opposite him.

Frowning, he started to step onto the stage, then hesitated, wondering if Rye would prefer he go straight to the dressing room. He turned to look for the manager, only to find Xena instead, her head slightly cocked, a knowing smirk playing at the corner of her wide, tempting mouth.

Too tempting, and he thanked his lucky stars and a deep well of self-restraint that he’d kept himself in check despite that final night at Ellie’s after-party when they’d stood too close together as the alcohol flowed and the city twinkled below them.

Her hair had been loose, and her soft curls had fluttered in the midnight breeze. Today, those blond strands were pulled back into a severe ponytail, a style that put her face on display.

It was a beautiful face, albeit in an unusual kind of way. The kind of face that probably photographed incredibly well, but in real life seemed a little too sharp, an effect that was softened by a smattering of freckles across her nose and cheeks as well as by her hypnotic blue eyes.

She wore skinny jeans and a white tank top, which clearly revealed that she was about as flat as your average twelve-year-old boy. Even in the flirty black dress she’d worn at Ellie’s party, she’d looked delicate. Ephemeral. As if he could break her with nothing more than a hug. He’d imagined her in his arms, their limbs entwined. His black skin in stark contrast to her pale white, so delicate she probably burned if she even thought about the sun. He wanted her under him, her fragile body crushed beneath him, her heart skittering in passion as she surrendered, trusting him not to hurt her despite his power to do exactly that.

She’d wanted him, too; he was certain of it. He’d seen it in her eyes. He’d heard it in her breath. But he’d known damn well that he’d never risk having her, not knowing where it might lead and what demons he might unleash.

Though known primarily for her award-winning and international bestselling erotic romances (including the Stark and Most Wanted series) that have reached as high as #2 on the New York Times bestseller list, JK has been writing full time for over a decade in a variety of genres including paranormal and contemporary romance, “chicklit” suspense, urban fantasy, and paranormal mommy lit.

JK has been praised by Publishers Weekly as an author with a “flair for dialogue and eccentric characterizations” and by RT Bookclub for having “cornered the market on sinfully attractive, dominant antiheroes and the women who swoon for them.” A six time finalist for Romance Writers of America’s prestigious RITA award, JK took home the first RITA trophy awarded in the category of erotic romance in 2014 for her novel, Claim Me (book 2 of her Stark Trilogy) and in 2017 for Wicked Dirty in the same category. Her Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series (as Julie Kenner) is currently in development as a television show.

Her books have sold over three million copies and are published in over twenty languages.

In her previous career as an attorney, JK worked as a clerk on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and practiced primarily civil, entertainment and First Amendment litigation in Los Angeles and Irvine, California, as well as in Austin, Texas. She currently lives in Central Texas, with her husband, two daughters, and two rather spastic cats.

✍🏻 Blog Tour & Excerpt Reveal: Kiss Me Tonight, a 4 1/2 ⭐️ book ✍🏻

KMT-BANNER-LIVE

What do a wrong number text, a burning building, and a quirky florist have in common?

A hunky firefighter with an extra-large…hosepipe.

Kiss Me Tonight, an all-new hilarious standalone romance from New York Times bestselling author Emma Hart is available now!

Check out my 4 1/2  ⭐️review HERE!

KISSMETONIGHT-1

In hindsight, I never should have opened that text message. The last thing I needed first thing on a Monday was a picture of some stranger’s, um, eggplant, in my inbox.

I also should have replaced the batteries in my fire alarm, because my Friday night did not need to end with my apartment building going up in flames.

But it’s fine. It’s fine. Everything is fine.

I’m only lying in a hospital bed with more split ends than I’ve ever had, almost all my Earthly possessions have turned to ash, and apparently, they don’t serve wine to patients in this place.

But like I said, it’s fine.

Until he walks in.

The guy who saved my life. My hero. Noah Jacobs.

And the universe is amusing itself at my expense, because the dirty photo I woke up to on Monday?

It’s his.

“Hi.”

I glanced over at him, my lips curving. “Hi.”

“You ready?”

“To escape the madhouse? What do you think?”

“That I should put my foot down.”

I winked and clicked my belt into place. “Let’s go. Where are we going?”

Noah pulled away from the curb. “I was going to let you direct me. I haven’t been in town long, like I said, and I definitely haven’t been out for lunch.”

I leaned back in the seat. “Hmm. What do you want to eat?”

“You’re the one breaking out of jail. I’m happy to go wherever you want to.”

“Oh, no. I hate making decisions like this. Do you know how difficult it is to pick somewhere to eat?” I shifted my whole body so I could look at him. “Do you want Chinese? Thai? Steak? Korean? Pizza? Burgers? Caribbean? Mexican? Spanish? French? Italian?”

Noah’s gaze darted my way. “Do you have all those places in Creek Falls?”

“No, but that doesn’t make the decision any easier,” I replied. “Well? Burgers? Pizza? Mexican? Italian? Steak? Or Chinese?”

“I don’t—shit me, I feel like I’m being interrogated by the fucking Government.”

“You may as well be. Pick somewhere and I’ll tell you where to go.”

“I said you can pick.”

“I don’t care. I’ve been everywhere. They’re all good. You’re the new boy in town. Pick somewhere.”

“You’re demanding, do you know that?”

“Yes, Preston—oh, he’s my brother—regularly points out how demanding and difficult I am.” I paused. “If you really want me to pick, I will, but you can’t complain after.”

He turned the blinker on so we’d head in the direction of Main Street. “You just said they’re all good.”

“They are, but it’s not my fault if you feel like pizza and end up with a taco.”

“I can honestly say that I do not care what I eat for lunch as long as it’s edible.”

“Right. Then turn left, then right, and pull into the parking lot next to the liquor store.”

“I see you’re taking us to a reputable location.”

“Oh, no. The liquor store is a pit stop. It just happens to be on the way to the Mexican place I like.”

“I see. So you’re using me for liquor.”

“You’ve met my great-aunt. Damn straight I’m using you for liquor.”
