“Call it what you want.”
“Fucking hell.” He laughs to himself. “You aren’t the same guy since you took my sister.”

“I’m offering an end to all of this.”
“You started this war, and now you’re offering to stop it? Like it’s a bargain? And my sister? Remember her? She’s part of the deal.”
I expected him to try this trade, but it still pisses me off. “We’ll disappear. We’ll leave New York. That’s all you get out of me.”
“Why would we do that?” He looks into the tunnel. The light is dim yellow and the air curls unpredictably, catching wrappers and plastic bags in looping whirlwinds—only to casually drop them on the tracks. “For what? We don’t want peace. That’s not some prize. We want you strung up like a side of beef, and we want Sarah back.”
“She’s better off with me and you know it.” I wasn’t sure if he knew that until I see his reaction. He knows. He just doesn’t care. “You want to fight for her, you’re going to have a fight. But then what? Drag her home? To do what with her? Turn her out like a whore? Or slice her up and sell her?”
His flinch is slight and as fast as a blink, but it tells me there are things the Colonia do that he doesn’t like thinking about. He was born human and raised to be an animal. Now he’s trying hard to die an animal. But the real him—the human—keeps slipping out. He’s a soft touch, a reformer, and too much of a coward to change anything before his father is out of the picture.
“We can’t let you live.” His voice is partially drowned out by a warm wind from behind him. A nearly empty train arrives on the opposite platform. “Your deal is bullshit, and it sucks.”
We say nothing for a moment, while the doors open. He hides his anxiety. I hide my regrets.
Say you want peace, Massimo. All you have to do is want it.
Mr. Post doesn’t get on the train.
Revenge is exhausting. It takes up too much mental real estate. Too much time. Too much love. I need all of it for something else.
The conductor’s voice gurgles, and with a double beep, the doors slap closed.
We’re just two men talking.
Wind gusts from behind me. Train on our side.
“I’m not coming to you with another deal.” I shrug, offering to clean up a mess I made.
Massimo’s sneer tells me the discount on salvation won’t result in a sale. “Without Sarah, there’s no deal.”

I have such a love-hate relationship with first books in trilogies especially because I’m too impatient to wait for all three books to be published. There is a commonality with any first book in a trilogy: it is background, characterizing and setting up for the other two books in the series; you start to fall in love with the characters, buying into the notion of the trilogy; and you are inevitably heartbroken, unhinged, or full of anxiety at its end. It’s such an exercise in self-flagellation. Seriously. Skye Warren’s newest book, One for the Money, is all of this. Even more, at the end of this book, you feel heartbroken, unhinged, and full of anxiety with the understanding that you have two more books to survive. 

What’s to know about this book?

• It lives in the Dark Romance Midnight Dynasty world. You know the world, right? Amelia Wilde, K. Webster, Skye Warren, et al. have written other stories in it. This means you might already be familiar with the Morellis as well as the Constantines. The characters are here, although the triplets from K. Webster’s duet haven’t made an appearance. Thank goodness! Enough H-E double hockey sticks have already broken loose by the end of this book. 
• One for the Money is a fake relationship or relationship of convenience story. This foreshadows heartbreak for either main character or both. I’ll let you guess the answer to that. 
• Eva Morelli is clearly THE best Morelli. My understanding of the Morellis comes through K. Webster’s Cinderella trilogy, so color me surprised when I fell in love with Eva and her big heart.
• Phineas Galileo Hughes aka Finn is a total cinnamon roll hero. He wears a carefully curated mask that does not match his inner gooeyness. Alas, he’s going to break hearts, though. This is a trilogy, so of course, he’s going to make the wrong moves. 
• I’m secretly in love with Hemingway, Finn’s younger brother (not really…but go with it). I really, really hope someone is going to write his story. Some time. Please. 
• Eva and Finn are two sides of the same coin: duty to family above all else. This is their connection and the reason their book breaks your heart. You want them to choose themselves over their duties, but this is book 1 of the trilogy soooo…they won’t. 
• Their chemistry is combustible. This is quintessential Skye Warren with a dirty-talking hero. It could be dirtier…and the future books might be. 

In a phrase, I LOVED One for the Money. In fact, I gobbled it, reading it as one would watch a horror movie: covering one eye while turning the page. This book is the fender bender on the side of the road that you can’t look away from even if you know you should, and Skye Warren reminds us WHY we spend all our pennies on her books, especially when she teases us with delectable stories like this newest one.

L.B. Dunbar is easily winning her readers over with her Lakeside Cottage series. Set in a small town in Michigan, it follows four friends brought together when one of them receives a terminal diagnosis. As life happens to these friends, the power of community and friendship carry them through their challenges, oftentimes coming from their ability to love and be loved. 

In her newest story, Loving at 40, Dunbar drives us through the story of Jenna and Archer. Jenna is the friend of Anna, the widowed wife whose home in Lakeside is the center of this series. A single mother of two young girls and a teacher, Jenna comes to Anna’s home for vacation and to be supportive of her friend. What she finds quickly is a man waking her in the middle of the night. Archer is Anna’s brother and the mystery man who surprises and frightens Jenna. Having spent a majority of his adult life away, he’s returned home during a time of healing. What he finds is a woman who calls to his soul and two daughters who steal his heart. The back and forth of Jenna and Archer as they fight against and for each other makes for a story that sinks into your soul. From the start, Dunbar draws this couple as fated, soulmates needing a happy ending. Unfortunately, life interjects and threatens to derail them forever. 

Loving at 40 furthers the story of the friends and Anna, providing set up for the fourth and, probably, most difficult book of this series. It provides updates for Logan and Zach and their heroines, Autumn and River. It adds more to the Lakeside Cottage adventures, pulling us deeper into these stories. As characters, Archer is the grizzled, alpha male who is drawn to Jenna like a moth to a flame. For much of this book, his fight is with himself and his misunderstanding about his capacity to love. The frustration of his characterization is his willingness to accept and then quickly dismiss Jenna and his adoration for her and her children. This can tend to be repetitive and the reason why I don’t give this story a 5-star rating. Jenna is my favorite character in the book. She’s insightful, willing to give Archer her heart, and a strong heroine. Her daughters provide the heart of this story. Together, Dunbar makes it difficult for Archer to walk away from them because they are the complete loveable package. 

My other criticism is the ending. After spending quite a bit of time in her falling action sequence, Dunbar’s ending feels abrupt, launching us into the epilogue which previews the next story in the series. I wanted a bit more foreshadowing of Archer and Jenna’s future. Hopefully, as we find in Loving at 40, tendrils of Jenna and Archer’s story will shade the next book, Letting Go at 40.  

One note: L.B. Dunbar has a trigger warning. There are guns in this book with an instance of a gun in a school. It does not have tragic consequences in the sense of our present world. However, if you are sensitive to guns, you might want to avoid this story. You will miss out on the enfolding love of Archer and Jenna, but the other two current books in the series are apt substitutions.
