HEARTBREAK_RED.jpg

He’s searching for the truth.

I’m living a lie.

And as much as we want to,

we can’t stay away from each other.

Falling for Carter nearly cost me everything.

To save myself I made a deal with the devil.

Now, I’ve got a second chance and more to lose than ever.

So when he makes it clear he wants me back,

I vow not to make the same mistake twice.

Carter has learned his lesson, too.

He’s done making promises.

This time, he’s staking his claim.

He already owns a piece of my heart,

But he won’t settle for less than all of me.

And by the time his seduction is done, I’ll want to give it to him.

But I made promises I have to keep.

And the devil I owe has come to collect his due.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5 ⭐️ Review: Between Now and Heartbreak ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dylan Allen is quickly becoming the quintessential queen of creating angsty, star-crossed lovers. Thankfully, unlike the master of this, Shakespeare, Allen doesn’t allow her hero and heroine to devolve into a tragic ending. Instead, she walks the tightrope of moments of pleasure, passion, and an abiding love and moments of affliction. Yet, we know, in the end, the hero and heroine will retreat into the most blessed of lives. Her newest book, the second book of the Forever trilogy, Between Now and Heartbreak, is no different.

As the second book of the series, it continues the journey of Beth and Carter while dropping bombs and leaving us suspended until its conclusion in Between Now and Always. Don’t forget that “Prologue” in Between Now and Forever. It’s what will sustain your heart until the end of that third book. Until then, be ready for more of Allen’s beautifully drawn drama and romance.

In this book, the story begins where the first one ended: with Beth and Carter apart but closer in proximity as Carter has moved to Winsome to investigate his parentage. While Carter struggles to find out information about his biological mother and father, Beth struggles to endure the promise she’s made to marry Duke and enact her father’s plan. Living a lie falls heavily on her soul, but her baby sister is her inspiration. One day, Carter and Beth meet in town, and the sparks fly. Both of them are nursing hurts based on a false understanding of prior actions. When they finally lower their defenses, the two reconcile, and they begin a beautiful friendship that eventually ends in delicious passion and ardor. These two are soulmates, made for each other. Yet, Allen, being the queen of angst, doesn’t allow these two much time to build a future. Instead, a major secret is revealed and changes the direction of Beth and Carter’s future. At the end of this book, their future seems an improbability, and much is left undone.

There is so much beauty in Carter and Beth’s turmoil.  It causes them to cling to each other in ways that heal some of the hurts of their pasts, and their strife keeps the reader wholly engaged on the page and in their story. You cannot help but root for them because they love each other so dearly. Yet, at the end of this book, all will seem lost. Thankfully, we know that Allen’s genius lies in creating “phoenix out of the ashes” moments for her main characters. And the low moments of Beth and Carter will act as a resolution of their undying love. That “happily ever after” is coming. Just not yet in this book.  Instead, this book treats us to some of the following truths about our characters:

1. The evocation of Beth’s strength. She is a woman who has had the worst of luck when it comes to families. As I was reading her this time, I thought of the “republican motherhood” of the early days of America. When women held little to no power in the public sphere, they held great power in their homes. Much like the women of early America, Beth’s power lies in her ability to control her situation at home, even when it seems she has none. Through Dina’s admonition, Beth is reminded that she has the ability to use her wealth to make a better future for her sister, Cameron. Through Carter’s love, this understanding is empowered, and her journey in this book is significant. Even at the end when all seems lost, there is this hidden hope that Beth will exact her revenge and power at the right time. She’s an incredible representation of women: resilient, tenacious, and self-sacrificing. We know that her due is coming, and it’s going to be epic.

2. While Carter acts as an impetus for some of Beth’s growth, I still feel that Carter has more growing to do. More is revealed of his talent in this book, and it’s clear that he will pursue it as we move into the next book. That talent is going to change his life, and I hope his journey will lead to finding a resolution to the issue of the second book. Unlike Beth, though, there is more work for him to do on himself. He needs to heal from his past so that he and Beth can be whole individuals in their future together.

Along with Carter and Beth, there is more dastardly behavior from Beth’s father, her step-mother, and Duke. It can be so painful to read, but that is Allen’s secret power. Through the dark moments she crafts so ably, she’s reminding us that life is meant to be lived even through the dark times. We should not simply exist; instead, we need to use the dark to remind us of the power of the light. There is also the supposition that dear old dad and Duke are going to “get theirs” eventually. Retribution will be found in the future. At least, that’s my hope.

Dylan Allen’s Between Now and Heartbreak’s title tells us only a small part of this book. Hidden in its pages is a romance that is peeled back layer by layer. Together, Carter and Beth exude passion and a spiritual connectedness that seems unexplainable. Allen paints their passion in her story much as Beth paints her love for Carter: richly, colorfully, and distinctly on her canvas. This romance is the one of dreams, even when nightmares shade it. In the end, I know Carter and Beth’s story will end beautifully. Between Now and Heartbreak is simply a marker of time preparing us for the delicious end.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Dirty Letters

Release Date: 11/05/2019

A Contemporary Romance Novel

New York Times Bestselling Authors Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward

EXCERPT REVEAL:

The small dining room table had a pile of mail. I’d had Dad’s mail forwarded to my house, so mostly it was just catalogs and junk. Once a month, Mrs. Cascio sent me everything that arrived, even though I’d told her it wasn’t necessary. I mindlessly fingered through the pile, not expecting to see anything worth keeping. But I stopped at an envelope addressed to me—well, not me, but Luca Ryan. That was a name I hadn’t heard in a long time. In second grade, my teacher, Mrs. Ryan, started a pen pal writing program with a small town in England. We weren’t allowed to use our real last names for safety reasons, so the entire class used her last name—hence I was Luca Ryan. I checked out the return address for the sender’s name.

G. Quinn

Wow, really? It couldn’t be.

I squinted at the postmark. It was from a PO box in California, not England, but I didn’t know any other Quinn other than Griffin. And the handwriting did look pretty familiar. But it had been close to eight years since we’d exchanged letters. Why would he write now? Curious, I ripped it open and scanned right to the bottom of the letter for the name. Sure enough, it was from Griffin. I started at the beginning.

Dear Luca,

Do you like scotch? I remember you said you didn’t like the taste of beer. But we never did get around to comparing our taste in hard liquor. Why is that, you might ask? Let me remind you—because you stopped answering my letters eight damn years ago. I wanted to let you know, I’m still pissed off about that. My mum used to say I hold grudges. But I prefer to think of it as I remember the facts. And the fact of the matter is, you suck. There, I’ve said it. I’ve been holding that shit in for a long time. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not obsessive or anything. I don’t sit in my house thinking about you all day long. In fact, there have been months that go by when thoughts of you don’t even enter my brain. But then some random thing will pop into my head out of the blue. Like I’ll see some kid in a pram eating black licorice, and I’ll think of you. Side note—I’ve tried it again as an adult, and I still think it tastes like the bottom of my shoe, so perhaps it’s that you just have no taste. You probably don’t even like scotch. Anyway, I’m sure this letter won’t find its way to you. Or if by some miracle it does, you won’t answer. But if you’re reading this, you should know two things.

1. The Macallan 1926 is worth the extra cash. Goes down smooth.

2. You SUCK.

Later, traitor, Griffin

BLURB

I’d never forgotten him—a man I’d yet to meet.

Griffin Quinn was my childhood pen pal, the British boy who couldn’t have been more different from me. Over the years, through hundreds of letters, we became best friends, sharing our deepest, darkest secrets and forming a connection I never thought could break.

Until one day it did.

Then, out of the blue, a new letter arrived. A scathing one—one with eight years of pent-up anger. I had no choice but to finally come clean as to why I stopped writing.

Griffin forgave me, and somehow we were able to rekindle our childhood connection. Only now we were adults, and that connection had grown to a spark. Our letters quickly went from fun to flirty to downright dirty, revealing our wildest fantasies. So it only made sense that we would take our relationship to the next level and see each other in person.

Only Griff didn’t want to meet. He asked that I trust him and said it was for the best. But I wanted more—more Griff, in the flesh—so I took a big chance and went looking for him. People have done crazier things for love.

But what I found could change everything.

She’s my best friend’s kid sister.

Only she’s not a kid any more.

Break the Rules, an all-new hilarious, brother’s best friend standalone romance from Roxie Noir, is coming November 21st and we have the steamy cover!

RN_BreaktheRules_Ebook.jpg

As a forest ranger, I believe in the simple life. I prefer cabins to apartments, trails to freeways, and trees to people. My life is orderly, predictable, and quiet.

Until it’s hit by a woman I never saw coming — Hurricane June.

She’s fierce. She’s feisty. She has a laugh like the first day of spring, and she’s so pretty that I can’t breathe when I look at her. June will only be in town for a few months—just while job-hunting. She won’t last until winter, but how can I resist?

Except I have to. She’s my best, oldest, and most loyal friend’s baby sister.

Betraying him would be the worst thing I’ve ever done. Not betraying him might be the hardest.

Especially once we start working together on a secret project. All this spending time together, sneaking around at night, and lying to her brother about what we’re doing sure feels like more than friendship.

June might break my heart. Her brother might break my nose.

But I guess some things were made to be broken.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s Reviews: D. Kelly’s Just An Illusion – Side A, Just An Illusion – Side B, and Just An Illusion – EP ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

D. Kelly’s Just an Illusion Side A follows the story of Amelia. As the daughter of rock royalty, Amelia has lived the rockstar life, and she’s not interested in living it again. One night, Amelia “Mel” joins her best friend, Belle, a music reporter/blogger at a concert for Bad and Dangerous (BAD). There, she is instantly drawn to the twin brothers who lead the band, Sawyer and Noah. However, Sawyer is the “bad boy” of rock. His reputation of bedding women, using drugs (in the past), and his grittiness both entice and deter Amelia. Noah, the “good” twin, calls to her careful side. She’s attracted to him, but she also feels safe with him. When the band meets both Amelia and Belle, they connect with Amelia immediately and ask her to follow them on their farewell acoustic tour to write their story. Amelia is a writer whose recent book is a blockbuster. With her background, they want to give her unfettered access to them as a way to document the band’s life and relationships. Even though Amelia was hoping to never return to the rock life given her past experiences with it, she decides to take advantage of the offer. In doing so, this places her in the path of both Sawyer and Noah. Should she choose the bad boy of rock or his brother? Even more, will Amelia heal from the wounds of her past, opening her up to love?

If I had to write one word to describe D. Kelly’s Just An Illusion Side A and its subsequent titles, it would be detailed. D. Kelly develops her characters, Amelia, Sawyer, Noah, Wyatt, Darren, and Belle well. We are treated to every moment of their journey, albeit through the point of view of Amelia. Obviously, we are treated to every aspect of Amelia’s thoughts and feelings, so she is developed the most. However, we are provided quite a bit of story about the others. These people are a family, and their nurturing and caring natures are some of the best parts of the book. We see quickly in this first book of the trilogy how they support each other through their traumas.

Amelia is a pretty broken heroine. Her past has left her bereft, struggling to move on from it. Therefore, her journey is the most significant in this first book. Sawyer likes to play the villain to a certain extent, and their chemistry is palpable. When Amelia makes her choice of brothers, there are feelings about this choice. It isn’t easily accepted from a reader’s standpoint, and I found myself hurting for the brother who isn’t chosen. That’s what Kelly does well in this book. You can imagine the brother’s hurt. This book begins the start of Amelia’s journey to acceptance about her past. Just An Illusion Side A also ends with a nice cliffhanger that draws you into the second book of the trilogy, keeping you addicted to Amelia’s story. I did feel that the story was fairly dense, though. It took me a bit to move through the story because Kelly creates so many scenarios with her characters. However, it’s entertaining at its best.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just An Illusion Side B begins where Just an Illusion Side A leaves off: resolving the cliffhanger. Amelia has made her choice of the brothers, and her heart is all in on developing that relationship. Even though she has misgivings about any talk of the future and commitment, over the course of the book, her ability to accept a future with the chosen brother evolves over the course of the story. By the end of this book, she is “all in”: married and pregnant. Throughout this book, the band continues on tour and takes a break to celebrate the holidays. This also creates a bit of tension between the brothers and Amelia because the brother who wasn’t chosen still loves Amelia. Unfortunately, this book ends in tragedy. Amelia’s healing is undone, and her future seems uncertain.

With this second book of the trilogy, I fell deeper into the story. It was still dense. Kelly is very thorough in her storytelling, creating so many scenarios for her characters. A lot happens in this book. From the beginning of the book until its end, you won’t recognize Amelia. Many of her misgivings are seemingly resolved through being loved fully, and she finally accepts she can have a happy ending. Until she doesn’t. There is a HUGE twist with this book, and you should be prepared for it.

From time to time, I struggle with Amelia. On the one hand, she acts in control, sometimes shut down emotionally. Then, a scene later, you’ll find her totally surrendered to love. It is sometimes odd. I would have preferred for her, and a few other characters, to be a bit more consistent at times, but the progression of her story is sweet in Just An Illusion – Side B. When this book ends, you are fully invested. There is no place but forward with this trilogy.

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

With Just An Illusion – EP, Amelia’s life has been torn asunder. Her life hangs in the balance, and her foundation is gone. This book, the final book of this trilogy, is a story about her journey back to herself and love. Of the three, this is by far the most emotionally gripping. It tears at your heart in all the best ways. In fact, in Kelly’s note to the readers, she warns that the reader might need tissues, wine, and chocolate, and she isn’t lying. I was a big blubbering baby at the beginning of this story. If that scares readers, still read it. There is a beauty in the trauma that Kelly has created. It’s the reason that the final book is my favorite of the trilogy. Amelia and Sawyer find the greatest growth in character in this book. They finally grow up. There is still quite a bit of push and pull. The story is still fairly dense. Kelly throws everything at you from the start to the finish; however, she also provides you with a serious ‘“gasp” of a moment’ at the end. In the midst of the “happily-ever-after,” there is magic. Of the three, this was the easiest for me to move through the story, but there was also a bit of repetitiveness. Amelia has a tendency to move forward and then backward three steps in her development. But such is life. Just An Illusion – EP finally reminds us that life is meant to be lived fully. To do so means honoring yourself and the people you love.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4+ ⭐️ Review: Brittainy C. Cherry’s Landon & Shay: Book 1 ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

My first foray into Brittainy C. Cherry was her fantastic book, Eleanor & Grey. The angst of their story and its happy ending made me fall in love with Cherry’s storytelling. Within the pages of that story, we were introduced to Landon and Shay. Landon is Grey’s best friend since childhood, and Shay is Eleanor’s best friend and cousin. In this book, it’s clear that Landon and Shay have unresolved issues. There is a tension between the two of them, grounded in disappointment and game-playing. At the end of Eleanor & Grey, I wasn’t done with these characters. In fact, I wanted Landon and Shay’s story. And Brittainy C. Cherry has provided a duet for these two, the first book being Landon & Shay: Book 1

For those of you who read Eleanor & Grey, the Landon and Shay of that book is similar but not quite the same as the Landon and Shay of this first book of the duet. Yes, these two begin this story as enemies. Both of them “hate” each other predicated on their perceptions of the other person. They don’t really know each other personally. Their understandings of each other are based on their preconceived notions and the actions of the other. And those preconceived notions don’t match the real worlds of these two characters. As one can imagine, as the story progresses, these two learn more about each other. This occurs because these two make a bet: the first to fall in love with the other is the winner with all the entitled bragging rights. What each learns about the other through the experience of the bet makes them realize they are more alike than different, and they have deeper feelings than before. At the end of this book, after falling in love, they leave each other for future endeavors. Obviously, Book 2 will show us more of the Landon and Shay of Eleanor & Grey, but I think Cherry has added more depth to these characters than she did in that book. I, for one, am anticipatory for her second book in this duet.

This book is a slow burn. As an “enemies-to-lovers” book, it’s important to realize that it takes quite a bit of story for Landon and Shay to move beyond their “hate” for each other. Cherry develops this story almost tediously as a way to help us understand the characters of Landon and Shay individually. What this does is slow the story down quite a bit. This is a romance that requires patience (never a bad thing), but the true action and depth of the story don’t really begin until about 60 – 70% into the book. Instead, Cherry takes her time in developing Landon and Shay individually so we can feel the depth of their hearts when they finally admit feelings larger than hate. For a reader like me, I found myself wanting to speed up or fast forward, but I waited it out. When the story finally crescendos, the feelings and heartbreak for these two characters tears at your soul. This is wise storytelling; it suggests that the more we invest in the character development, the bigger the emotional payoff. For a romance reader like me, that’s important. I need an emotional connection to my characters within the context of an angsty romance like this one. That is what makes a successful romance in my estimation.

While this book is seemingly about enemies becoming lovers, the real message behind this story is depression. This is the power of Cherry’s story here. Landon lives a life with a mask that hides his deep depression. Cherry shows us all his hurt within the confines of his mind. Every moment Landon hits the page, it illustrates the dire nature of living with depression. He hides it well, except that Shay sees through his mask. It’s her love for him, her tenacity to see him fully, that helps him begin to admit he’s depressed. This isn’t an easy or fast choice in this book. It takes most of the book, much back and forth between these two, for Landon to admit it. When he does, this sets the action forward. Through Landon’s characterization, we are treated to the ways that people can help others with depression, and it begins with seeing them behind their masks. I hope the Landon of Landon & Shay isn’t fully like the Landon in Eleanor & Grey. I hope when we read him in Book 2 he’ll maintain the depth he’s grown in this book. But, this being Brittainy C. Cherry, I know there are strife and tension ahead.

As far as heroines, Shay resides among the best of them. She should be broken. With an addict, liar of a father, she should act out and make poor choices. Instead, Cherry sets her in contrast to the antagonist of the story, Monica. Monica’s life is a mess because her home life is less than ideal. While Shay’s home life is also fraught with issues, she relies on the strength of her grandmother to see her through the difficulties. Like Landon, she too wears a mask at school: the good perfect girl. However, there is something deeper in Shay. And it’s this depth that calls out to Landon. She’s wise beyond her years, intuitive about people. This is what helps save Landon from himself. This is what makes her heroic. Yes, she has the qualities of a typical romantic heroine: looks, strength, and compassion. It’s her intuitive nature, however, that makes her better.

Brittainy C. Cherry’s Landon & Shay calls for patience. It asks for us to wait, to save our judgment until the very last word. If not, we run the risk of unfairly characterizing its story. At its surface, this book looks like an enemies-to-lovers story. Yet, at its depth, it is a story of loving someone through their pain and their hurt and their depression. Cherry does this carefully, plodding along while pouring into the development of her characters. I know when this duet ends my heart will be fuller, and the tension of this book (and probably the next) will have drained away. In its stead, there will be the realization that true love can overcome anything. If you love contemporary, angsty romance, then you’ll find an important story in Cherry’s Landon & Shay.

Landon & Shay: Part One, an all-new must read enemies to lovers romance by Brittainy C. Cherry, is available now!

Landon & Shay FOR WEB.jpg

Shay Gable hated my guts, and I hated hers, too.

We went out of our way to avoid one another at all times. When she came my direction, I went the other. When we locked eyes, she’d turn and walk away.

All of that changed the day I was presented with a challenge. It started out as a stupid bet: make Shay fall in love with me before I fell in love with her first.

That was an easy bet for me to win.

I didn’t love, I hardly liked.

Yet slowly the game started to shift. Shay made me crave things I never knew I wanted like love, happiness, and her.

The closer we grew, the more she challenged my darkness, and the parts I kept locked away.

The hurts.

The pains.

The truth.

The game between us became too real, our feelings intermixed, and the risks of hurting one another grew higher.

But you know what they say…

All’s fair in the game of love and war—especially the heartbreaks.
