✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: L.B. Dunbar’s Silver Player ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

“When he loves, he loves. But when he hurts, he aches. I don’t want him to ache.”

With Giant’s story in Silver Brewer, L.B. Dunbar further captured my heart. If you’ve read any of my other reviews for her books with heroes and heroines over 40, then you know that I love what she’s doing. Dunbar makes it easy for the over 40 set to find themselves in her romances. Their troubles are my troubles. Well, sort of.

Billy Harrington piqued my curiosity in Silver Brewer. Playboy extraordinaire, I was waiting for him to meet his match. Although she seemed to foreshadow his match in Silver Brewer and Denton and Mati’s story, Second Chance, you can never be sure. However, true to form, Billy’s nemesis, Roxanne, is his match. And Dunbar’s Silver Player illustrates the perfection of the enemies-to-lovers trope in their coupling.

There is much to love about Silver Player

  1. Billy Harrington is more complicated than is suggested, on the surface. The complexity of his characterization offers us insight into the idea that “everything is never as it seems.” Through his journey towards love, Billy’s evolution is poignant. He reminds us that we can never really know a person based on our view of them. Instead, there is usually more below the surface, and it behooves us to learn a person more deeply.
  2. Roxanne also represents that message too. In her case, it is Billy who makes some assumptions about her. However, it’s clear from the start that he likes her more than he allows anyone to believe (even himself). Roxanne is the perfect kind of heroine with this trope because she knows herself, and she finds contentment in it. She’s an incredibly strong heroine. With that strength, she’s the perfect challenger for Billy.
  3. The chemistry between these two flies off the page. Yet, the difficulty of Dunbar’s Silver Player is their romantic journey. The moments of tension begin early through the hurtful words these two wield at each other. They are truly knives to your soul. For me, Roxanne’s hurt over her perception of Billy never choosing her as he does with other women gutted me. I felt her hurt deeply, just as I empathized with Billy’s feelings of inadequacy, especially related to his father. There is an emotional depth underpinning Billy and Roxanne’s chemistry that draws the reader into the story.
  4. Roxanne’s niece and Billy’s daughter, Sadie, is also a special character in Silver Player. In many ways, she’s the amalgamation of Roxanne and Billy in that she’s created a facade of strength as a way to protect her heart from rejection, and she’s innately interested in being something more than what others expect of her. It was easy to notice her ability to work between her aunt and father. In her character, Dunbar crafts these highly emotional moments that bring a tear to your eye and a hurt to your heart, as Sadie attempts to grieve for her mother and seek acceptance from a father who struggles to understand fatherhood at first. There is an emotional depth to this Harrington series that I hadn’t felt in Dunbar’s Sexy Silver Foxes series. Between Billy and Giant’s stories, my appreciation for Dunbar’s storytelling grew because I connect emotionally with her characters.

As a criticism, I struggled with Billy at times. There is no secret that Billy undergoes the biggest transformation in this romance. This is most predominant in his emotional growth, but, to get there, the reader must contend with an emotional rollercoaster of sorts. There were times when I found Billy petty and insensitive to Sadie and Roxanne. There were also times when Roxanne, specifically at the end, created more drama than necessary in her processing of experience. I know this is commonplace to people, but it felt overdramatized, and I found myself frustrated with her character.

Overall, though, I loved Silver Player. Nothing makes this reader happier than the emotional and mental evolution of a hero. I think it represents the truth of humanity. We have to grow in order to survive, and Dunbar has written this beautifully appointed story about two people who are seemingly different but really much more alike than it seems. It’s a stark reminder to “never judge a book by its cover” because there is usually something much more in its pages than can be seen. If you are an L.B. Dunbar fan OR if you have never read her books, this book, in my opinion, is one of her bests, and you should read it. Now.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 ⭐️ Review: LK Farlow’s Rebel Soul ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“I know I have no real claim to her, but I want one. I need one. I need this woman to be mine. For this body to be for my eyes, my hands, my mouth…my worship only. “

Rebel Soul, LK Farlow’s newest book, follows the story of two friends, two people, who, looking at their appearances, are very opposite. West is the CEO of his own company. He comes from wealth, and Stacia is struggling to save her family from a financial predicament. All of her money is tied up in an investigation of her father. However, given their differences in appearance, there is a keen attraction between these two and a problem. In order for West to inherit his grandmother’s estate, he must “produce an heir by the age of twenty-five” and his time is running out. Initially, he and his lawyer buddy, Colton, believe they have found a resolution to West’s issue. Unfortunately, his heart struggles to accept their solution. The more time he spends with Stacia, thrown together as roommates due to her family’s troubles, the more he wants Stacia to act as his baby-mama. Will Stacia accept West’s proposition? Or will West have to stick with his initial plan? Even more, will Stacia fall for West as he begins to fall deeper for her? Only time will tell.

This is my first LK Farlow book. I have always loved the “opposites attract” and “baby/marriage of convenience” tropes. There is tension rife within these tropes related to ideas of acceptance. I think it’s human nature to want to find acceptance and love with anyone. That idea runs as the undercurrent of Farlow’s Rebel Soul. The tension of this story lies in Stacia accepting West’s proposal, but, even more, in accepting West.

Farlow has created a heroine with such strength of character that she, oftentimes, self-sabotages the resolution to her problems due to pride. She struggles to accept help from her best friend and West. It’s easy to love her because she seeks to help her family overcome their troubles. Yet, her choices oftentimes derail her ability to move forward. In all of that, though, you can’t help but love her. She’s self-sacrificing, true to herself, and she challenges the hero, West. In fact, that is the best part of the story: their chemistry.

Farlow crafts their chemistry in such a way that it leaps off the page, and whether you agree with West’s want to procreate with Stacia, you root for it because you see their future, even when Stacia can’t. It would be simple to state that the story is unbelievable, yet Farlow constructs their coupling in such a way that it feels believable and you hope they will find their way to each other.

West represents your typical hero. He’s stalwart, at times a bit like a caveman, and quite frankly, he falls faster for Stacia, I think. For me, I like that. I love when a hero cannot help himself, and he does everything possible to win the heroine to himself. That is the case in Rebel Soul. West goes from player to dedicated baby daddy in fast form. If I struggled with anything, it was the whiplash of West’s change, but, I guess, when you know, you know. West morphs quickly into a dreamy hero with nothing but Stacia on his mind.

For my first LK Farlow book, Rebel Soul hits all of the notes. There is definitely an attraction between Stacia and West from the start, and this book takes its readers on a journey of acceptance of each other and a non-traditional arrangement. The reality is these two are made for each other, and it isn’t a stretch for them to find their happy ending. Farlow reminds us with Rebel Soul that opposites attract and find love just like the rest of us.

“Seeing her right now, though, I’m struck with a sense of rightness, like she belongs here, in my home…my bed…my heart.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Meghan Quinn’s Boss Man Bridegroom ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

An Open Letter to Meghan Quinn (maybe you’ll read it; maybe you won’t)

Dear Meghan Quinn, funny woman extraordinaire,

You don’t know this, but I really needed your newest book, Boss Man Bridegroom, desperately. You see, I’m a blogger reviewer, and I’ve been reading a lot lately. A whole lot. I teach college students about college writing, and I’ve been on a break between semesters, so I had lots of great ARCs to read. However, I signed up for some emotional heavy hitters. I’m pretty sure I’ve been in an emotional tornado of feelings reading these beautifully-written books that have left me crying my eyes out. So…I needed a respite. And your book did that. Wonderfully.

You don’t know me. I’ve read two other books of yours: The Locker Room and Love, Sincerely, Yours, along with your short story in Team Player 2. I’ve got The Dugout sitting in my Kindle Library awaiting me when I finish my ARC reading because there is something funny and interesting about your storytelling. You engage me with your characters and dialogue in a way that keeps me reading until the very end. When I saw the blurb for Boss Man Bridegroom, you had me at “marriage of convenience.” Then, I entered the book and fell hard, so hard for these characters.

I didn’t have the advantage of reading Diary of a Bad Boy or The Secret to Dating Your Best Friend’s Sister prior to reading BMBG so I didn’t have the backstory of the hero, Rath’s, friends, Roark and Bram, but I didn’t need their stories to recognize that these heroes, Rath included, are absurdly hilarious. Bram and Rath’s relationship is almost better than Rath and Charlee’s. When the “Three Musketeers” ciome together in this story for their mutual milk-drinking game nights et al., the laughs are guaranteed. I couldn’t get enough of their brand of ridiculousness. As a hero, Rath is equal parts neurotic, absurd, sweet, and grumpy. I love that, as a reader, you never know the Rath you’ll read on the page. It keeps the reader guessing, and, of course, it sets up some key tension when necessary because rom-coms can’t always be funny. They need some climactic moment that potentially destroys the burgeoning love between the hero and heroine. Of course, Rath does a stellar job of inciting this moment with his brand of ignorance.

Thankfully, you’ve written one of the best heroines I’ve read this month. Charlee “Bag of D*cks” Cox is her own brand of special. What an intuitive, insightful, strong woman! She’s my favorite kind of rom-com queen because she knows how to handle the hero into his evolution. From the beginning, I found myself laughing aloud at her manipulation of Rath. Literally, I could have done a spit-take while reading this book if I had been drinking. Charlee is the heart of this book whereas Rath is its mind. Together, Charlee and Rath make reading Boss Man Bridegroom a fun experience. Add in the ancillary characters: Charlee’s grandmother, Bram’s assistant, Linus, Bram, and Roark, along with an Office Supply convention, and you have a story that alleviates any stress of your readers for a time.

So thank you, Meghan Quinn, for saving me from the heavy thinking, emotionally-wrought books that have sought to break my soul. Thank you for the levity that Boss Man Bridegroom brings to a Kindle. Thank you for creating a story that is uproariously funny and a little bit angsty. But, mostly, thank you for writing books that keep readers like me coming back for more. Even though you’re fairly new to me, you can guarantee that your booklist is next on my list to devour whole because your brand of funny is all I need to add a little bit of joy to my day.

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 5++ ⭐️ Review: Ashley Jade’s Ruthless Knight ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️++

Let me preface this review with this simple thought: nothing that I write below will do this book justice. Nothing. It is an experience, and it’s one that you should run to NOW. My words simply cannot capture the power of the human experience in this story. That being said, let’s begin.

Designating a piece of writing as “good” or “great” or the “best book of the year thus far” is subjective. Each of us knows the reasons for defining a story as any one of those descriptors. For me, a book should have one, if not all, of these three qualities for me to deign it as such:

  1. The ability to connect me emotionally to the book. In other words, if your book gives me huge butterflies, makes me cry, causes me to run screaming through my house, etc., I know in my soul the book is special.
  2. Some type of style. I teach writing, so one’s ability to put words on the page is an important skill. Some people are reporters. Line after line, we are fed story, but the prose is lacking. And some people weave gold. Each sentence of the book exists for a special purpose: to grab the reader and take them on a journey.
  3. It’s a mirror. This trait is key. It’s necessary for me. A story should connect me through a shared experience, meaning that, as I’m reading it, do I find myself in it. Does it reflect my own experiences, thinking, or feelings back at me? I need this because I yearn for a connection with the characters, their story, and the author’s representation of it.

When you come to Ashley Jade’s Ruthless Knight, all of these traits or qualities that I’ve listed above find purchase in her story. They are there, and they launch you into a tale older than time, yet still relevant today.

With her Royal Hearts Academy series, Jade has cemented herself as a YA/Bully Romance author (by the way, using these titles reduces this book immediately in a way that makes me a little grumpy) beyond most. I’ve read my share of late. Not to critique other writers, there is always something missing from them. A soul. A sense of humanity. Maybe it’s the other tomes I’ve read, but they lean heavily to a $exual awakening of sorts for the bully and the bullied. In Ruthless Knight, the writer is treated to real life, to two individuals whose self-loathing causes one to erect a facade to mask their pain and the other to hide the depths of their pain behind smiles. Each, the hero and heroine, of this story are simply trying to survive, and it’s their journey of survival that both entices and engages the reader. When you read Cole and Sawyer’s story, some part of you thinks I shouldn’t connect with these two. They are high school students. That isn’t where I exist in life. Yet, Jade’s ability to connect Cole and Sawyer’s story to a united human condition showcases her talent. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve read a romance where I’ve found myself in both the hero and the heroine, a little of each to affix me to its telling. It’s this skill that hits on all the attributes of great writing for me. Whether I was reading Cole’s narrative or Sawyer’s, I was entrenched emotionally in their pain and in their pleasure. I found a mutual experience with both of them, and Jade’s ability to drive us through her story with the flow of her prose engages you more deeply into it. This book is long, yet it only felt like a few hours of reading it. Even now, I wish for more because I didn’t want to leave Cole and Sawyer’s world.

Beyond Cole and Sawyer’s story is the revelation of the characters of Oakley and Bianca. There are many in Jade’s Facebook reader group who have attached themselves to the Oakley train since Cruel Prince, the first book of this series of standalones. To be honest, in that book, he wasn’t my “cup of tea.” I held an empathy for him at that book’s end, but beyond a pang of sadness for his situation, he seemed pretty ancillary to Jace and Dylan’s story. In Ruthless Knight, Oakley is an emotional juggernaut. There is something special about him here that, should Jade decide to write a book for him, I would GLADLY read his story. He surprised me and gained a top spot in the Royal Hearts Academy series.

Additionally, Bianca, the younger sister of Jace and Cole, evolves beyond the bratty mean-spirited persona. There is more to this character, and it’s a great set-up for Wicked Princess, the next book in the series. I love the evolution of her character. We see some growth from Bianca that seems surprising one moment and necessary the next.

Jace and Dylan are also both here, but like Cole and Sawyer in their story, they hold moments of importance but are really secondary. The interesting part of that is you don’t mourn them here. You don’t stretch for more of their story; instead, your focus in Ruthless Knight is the beautiful humanity of Cole and Sawyer’s romance.

Ruthless Knight isn’t for the faint of heart. There are laughs and sass in it because that is a trait of Cole and Sawyer’s enemies-to-lovers relationship. Yet, the power, the gravity, of Ruthless Knight is the emotional, oftentimes painful, connection between these two. For me, I preferred them in their moments of conflict. This is where Jade shines. She has an uncanny ability to invest her readers so deeply in the pain of a story that it feels like a gold medal moment when you finish reading her books. And this is one of the feelings you feel at the end of Ruthless Knight. You become a survivor of sorts, and there is pride in it; it feels like a worthy accomplishment and collective moment with her other readers. Honestly, it took me 72 hours to write this review, partly because I hated leaving the emotions of this book behind. For me, this is Ashley Jade’s best book to date. If anyone asked me one book of Jade’s to read, this would be my choice because it’s an example of writing that connects your soul so deeply that you protect its place in it, even when it might be a little painful to do so. At its core, Ruthless Knight is a transcendent tale of love overcoming the deepest pain and filling in the holes it leaves behind to make us complete.

In love and romance,

Professor A

Blurb:
“Will you do me the greatest honor of all time and be my bridegroom?” she asks, hope in her eyes . . .

How did I get here? My assistant, bent on one knee, holding my hand, her expectant face waiting for an answer.

Just . . . how?

How did I go from being insulted by Charlee Cox to hiring her to be my assistant? How is it that she’s chaos in color – making me crazy and my life better at the same time?

I never thought I would be staring down at her bright blue eyes begging me to go along with this ridiculous scheme I suggested.

Yes, I suggested. Like the idiot I am, I thought hey, why not start an HR nightmare and have my assistant ask me to marry her?

Confused? Don’t worry, so am I.

But try to follow along, because this is how I became Boss Man Bridegroom.

Excerpt:
**RATH**

“Rath Westin, my boss, my commander in chief, my Gucci Governor—”

“I don’t wear Gucci.”

“Go with it.” She winks and clears her throat. “Mr. Big Shot, Barking Britches, and Irritable Ira—”

“Jesus . . . Christ.” I rub my hand down my face.

“Will you do me the great honor . . .” She wobbles on her bent knee and clutches my hand to steady herself. “Will you . . .” She tears up, her voice becoming shaky. “I’m sorry, I’ve never done this before.”

“I sure as hell hope not,” I say through gritted teeth.

“And I didn’t think I’d get emotional either.” On a deep breath, she finishes, “Will you do me the greatest honor of all time and be my bridegroom?”

Christ, nothing is ever simple with her.

“Why did you say it like that?”

“Did I not do it right?” she mumbles to herself. “See, I knew I was doing something wrong.”

“No, why did you say bridegroom?”

“Oh, well, that’s what you would be. You see, that’s what they used to call men who were soon to be married . . . a bridegroom. But then somewhere along the way they shortened it to groom. But if you marry me, I would give you the dignified pleasure of retaining the honorable title of bridegroom.”

“Don’t call me bridegroom.”

“Boss man bridegroom?” she asks with a cheeky grin.

How the fuck did I allow myself to get in this position? With my quirky and sometimes annoying but mostly efficient assistant, kneeling in front of me . . . proposing.

Proposing to me.

In a pair of belly-covering slacks and suspenders, hair pulled back into a tight bun like she often wears it, looking up at me through her red-framed glasses, her bright blue eyes shining past the lenses, begging me to go along with this ridiculous scheme I suggested.

Yes, me.

Like the goddamn idiot I am, I thought hey, why not start an HR nightmare and have my assistant ask me to marry her?

Confused?

Don’t worry, so am I.

Where do I even start? Maybe from the beginning?

Here is a quick rundown: my ex, who used to work with me, left me for bigger and better things. We don’t talk about her, ever, because she took my heart with her. Instead, I buried myself in my work. I became a hermit in my office, firing one assistant after another because they weren’t good enough or their voice annoyed me, or they thought salt was sugar and gave me one bad cup of coffee that ended their career at Westin Enterprises—that mistake was on them.

In my spare time—not that there’s much—but when I do have spare time, I follow my two idiot friends around the city, helping them avoid fucking up their lives. But now that they’re both in loving and committed relationships, one planning a wedding with my sister as the bride, I have much more time on my hands.

Maybe they’re to blame for my demise, for this ridiculous charade I’m now a part of.

What does this have to do with my assistant proposing to me?

Well, you see, I was in the market for yet another new assistant, and that’s when one of my best friends, Bram, suggested I lean on his assistant, Linus, to help me find someone. Side note: Linus is a gift from God, and I’ve offered him huge pay raises many times to jump ship and join my company, but his loyalty lies with Bram . . . unfortunately.

So Linus helped me find an assistant, and that’s where it started to go downhill.

The minute I saw her, I knew it wasn’t going to be a good fit.

Why?

Because she’s too goddamn beautiful.

Because she’s far too bubbly.

Because with every smile and checklist she devises, she makes me want to bend her over my desk and make her mine.

But, since I clearly don’t know how to make any decisions worth a shit, I hired her, right there on the spot.

And that was the beginning of the end.

Need to know more? Well in case you are on pins and needles about my answer to her proposal, I said yes.

Here’s the story of how I became Boss Man Bridegroom.
