✍🏻 Professor Romance 4.5 ⭐️ Review: Layla Hagen’s You’re The One ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️+

Each author has this voice, this writing presence that is distinctly their own. When you read their stories, you know it belongs to them because the voice and focus is a tight thread that runs through all of their books. It’s what brings their readers back for more because reading their books feels like snuggling in a warm blanket on a cold day. It’s a reminder that we trust them with our hearts.

Layla Hagen exhibits this unmistakably. When you read her stories, we can trust these attributes of her story: a hero or heroine who doesn’t quite understand his/her feelings immediately, but they figure it out quickly, a sweet story following one of the main tropes of romance, some steamy chemistry between the hero and heroine, a family that surrounds them who add context to their relationship, and a lovely happy ending that leaves you on a sigh. Hagen’s newest book, You’re The One, is no different. In its basic form, it’s a friends-to-lovers, fake marriage story that reminds us that we oftentimes cannot see the perfection that is right in front of us.

You’re The One tells the story of Josie and Hunter who have been friends since they were in high school. They are each other’s best friend, and each big moment in their lives involved the other. At some point, Josie had a crush on Hunter but she didn’t want to ruin their friendship by acting on it. Presently, Hunter receives news that his visa is being withdrawn, and he must return to England where he was born. In researching the problem, Josie and Hunter realize that marrying each other will remedy his problem. Yet, as they enter into their marriage, dormant feelings arise, and both of them struggle to accept their temporary situation. Will they find their happy ending by making their relationship permanent? Is it possible that Josie and Hunter have always been fated for each other?

There is a guarantee with Hagen’s stories that the hero and heroine are fairly clueless about their initial attraction to each other. This is definitely the case with Josie and Hunter. As they both struggle with attraction, these two find every way initially to discourage and deny their feelings for each other. Hagen shows the complications of friends becoming attracted to each other and eventually falling in love. This is probably the best part of the friends to lovers trope, and Hagen writes this well in You’re The One

As she has done with her other series, The Bennett and Connor Family, Hagen is crafting a new series. We meet Hunter’s aunt and cousins, and it feels as though Hagen is going to do what she does best: creating a universe of stories incorporated into one family. The promise of this is exciting as we move from the West Coast to the East Coast with this new series.

You’re The One is everything you love about Layla Hagen. Josie and Hunter finding their happily-ever-after comes with sweet moments and strife, yet it’s never too difficult to bear. As they journey forward, there is a promise that they are soulmates and will love each other dearly. Reading a Hagen romance isn’t a hardship. Once again, it’s like coming home after a long trip away. You can guarantee that you will find my nose within the pages of her books, and You’re The One is everything you love about them.

In love and romance,

Professor A

On our first night together, he told me that I had to keep us both in check, because he didn’t know how to keep the lines from blurring…

TheRichBoy EBOOK.jpg

I’m the type of girl who’s given up on fairy tales. So when Beck – the hot new busboy at work – starts flirting with me, I know better than to get my hopes up. Happily ever afters aren’t for the average. I learned that the hard way.

But how can I be expected to resist a man who can quote Austen, loves making me laugh, and seems to be everything hot and good in this world?

Only there’s so much more to him than that.

Billionaire playboy? Check.
Troubled soul? Check.

The owner of my heart, the man I’ve moved halfway across the country to be with, who’s laying the world at my feet in order to convince me to never leave? Check. Check. Check.

But nobody does complicated like the one percent.

This is not your everyday rags-to-riches, knight-in-shining armor whisking the poor girl off her feet kind of story. No, this is much messier.

“Emotional, raw, and utterly consuming. Catherine Cowles’s storytelling is perfection.”
– Grahame Claire, USA Today bestselling author

Beautifully Broken Control, an all-new emotional and unforgettable small town romance by Catherine Cowles is releasing February 18th, and we have the first sneak peek and the incredible trailer!

Beautifully Broken Control AMAZON

A woman trying to rebuild her life.

Kennedy is doing all she can to escape, to prove that she’s not the monster her father was. A simple life of peace and service is all she needs.

A man haunted by a past he can’t forget.

Cain has buried his demons under layers of control and success. The only thing he needs is his company and his solitude. Certainly not a woman with captivating green eyes filled with ghosts so similar to his own.

He’s a reminder of the life she’s left behind. And she’s a threat to his tightly guarded control. As sparks fly between them, they discover that what they might need most is each other.

But with pasts like theirs . . . you never know when darkness might descend.

Prologue:

A single bead of sweat rolled down my sternum, and my hand shook as I tried to wipe it away.

“Don’t.” The tech guy’s stern voice whipped through the small cargo van, making me jump.

“Geez, Whitley, would you calm down already?” Agent Carnes gave me a reassuring smile that did nothing to ease the rapid beat of my heart.

Agent Whitley turned his scowl from me to Carnes. “This case has been years in the making, and she’s going to blow it by covering the mic with her hand because she’s twirling her hair or some other stupid shit.”

I winced, slowly lowering my hands to my lap and resting them carefully on my Chanel bag. The purse was a lie, just like the rest of my life. The pale pink tufted leather had made me so happy when my mother had gifted it to me for my birthday, reminding me of the pointe shoes I loved so much. Now, just the feel of it made me sick to my stomach.

“Kennedy?”

My gaze jumped from the purse to Agent Carnes. “Hmm?”

Unease filled his expression. “You good on the plan?”

“The perfect, irresistible romantic comedy!”

—Erin Nicholas, New York Times bestselling author

Weekend Wife, an all-new sassy and quirky stand-alone rom com from New York Times bestselling author Erin McCarthy, is available now!

Read my 4 ⭐️ review here.

WeekendWife FOR WEB

Billionaire businessman in need of a fake fiancée…

It should be the easiest job ever for an out-of-work actress, right?

All I have to do is pose as Grant Caldwell (the Third)’s fiancé for a fancy-pants weekend in the Hamptons. Easy. Wear designer clothing and sip champagne? Don’t mind if I do. Flirting with Grant? It’s so delicious I should be paying him.

Nothing can go wrong as long as I can just keep my hands off of him.

But that’s the hard part. And I do mean hard.

Because Grant is sexy.

And bossy.

And surprisingly sweet, a real rarity in his pretentious family.

Oops. I’m not as good at faking it as I thought. Or maybe they call this method acting. Because it’s getting harder to figure out where my character ends and I begin…

It just might be the role of a lifetime.

Excerpt

I looked at Leah. “Sorry about that. I am not filthy rich.” I actually was, but I felt compelled to be modest. “I’m just rich.”

“Oh, yeah? Well… I think everyone’s definition of filthy is different.”

And just like that, Leah took an awkward moment and made it flirtatious. Her voice was low, breathy.

Green light. That’s what that was. And I was hitting the gas and plowing into the intersection.

I eyed her. “What do you know about filthy?”

I had leaned closer to her, turned slightly, my thigh brushing against the fabric of her skirt. Her lips were a ripe raspberry color and she had a divot in the base of her chin that made me want to kiss it. Her chest rose and fell beneath her tight sweater with a quick rhythm, like she was turned on. Intrigued. Contemplating her move. She opened her mouth, gaze sweeping over my lips, and for a second I thought she was going to move close enough that I could kiss her.

Instead, she held my gaze, all seduction and skill, while her hand shot out and tucked the cash into the breast pocket of my suit. She grinned and turned back to the front, smug.

Damn.

“Nice acting skills,” I told her dryly. Leah, starring in the role of femme fatale, and I’d fallen for it.

“Thanks. I’m working on eye contact.”

I was working on blue balls.

She was cute and clever. Fuck.

I knew a couple of women who wanted exactly what I did—no-strings-attached sex. No one got offended if months went by without contact and it was just as likely they would text me as I would text them. I didn’t get… ensnared. Leah could ensnare me. It might be time to send out a sexual SOS. I needed zero contact with Leah after today. She wasn’t good for my concentration. But I did admire both her boldness and her talent.

“That was savage,” I told her. “I love it.”

“I need a distraction from the fact that my ankle seems to have a heartbeat and half the ice has melted so now my sock is damp.”

Right. Her busted ankle. That was the relevant issue at hand, not my dick.

“You really should elevate your ankle. Turn a little.”

Surprisingly, she obeyed me. I dug my way through all that fabric and hauled her calf and ankle up onto my lap. I also tucked the hundred bucks back into her skirt pocket. She didn’t seem to notice and just cleared her throat.

Leah bit her bottom lip. “This is weird,” she said. “I don’t think you want my damp sock on your pants.”

There were so many things I wanted to say. All of them inappropriate as fuck.

What I settled for was, “Don’t assume what I want.”

✍🏻 Professor Romance’s 4 1/2 ⭐️ Review: Lexi Blake’s Long Lost ✍🏻

Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Oh boy! Lexi Blake reminds us what her superpower is with her newest book, Long Lost. Blake has this ability to grab you, throw you into her book, and hold your face to it until the very end. Each page offers more and more suspense, action, and steam as you fall deeper into the intrigue and romance of the Masters & Mercenaries: The Forgotten series. Personally, I found this series (and Lexi Blake) with the book before this newest book, Lost in You, Robert’s story. To be fair to Blake, I wasn’t familiar with the characters or backstories, as I was new to her. That caused some issues in understanding the bigger picture, but, still, I found myself engrossed in Robert and Ari’s story. When the opportunity arose for an ARC for Long Lost, I was definitely interested because one character grabbed a little portion of my heart in Lost in You: Tucker.

And Long Lost did not disappoint in telling his story. I won’t offer any of the story here because there are story revelations to be had for this newest book. What you should know is that Blake creates a world that engrosses you deeply into her storytelling. These are the reasons you should read Long Lost today:

  1. Edge of your seat action and storytelling. This is Blake’s strength. She has this ability to pace her story in such a way that it feels like you are at the same time suspended and pushed forward into her story. There were times when I wanted the story to hurry up because I needed to know that Tucker would regain his memory, and there were times when I wanted the story to slow as Tucker and Roni worked through their relationship issues. I marvel at Blake’s ability to set this pacing in such a way that you know she has your best reader interests at heart. Long Lost is engaging and suspenseful throughout.
  2. The characters. There is literally a character for someone. For a new reader to Blake, this can be overwhelming as there are so many characters to track in this story. Thankfully, the further you read into the book, the easier this task becomes. In the end, even if you don’t know their backstories, you feel as if you know each character well. Even more, Tucker is still the same loveable, funny guy even as he journeys into the abyss of his memories. There is only one moment in this story when I wanted to yell at Tucker because he needs to be strong and he fails to be, causing friction between him and Roni. Yet, in expert form, Blake pulls us through the moment, crafting a sentimental ending for our hero and heroine.

Now, I will say that I still struggle with Blake’s incorporation of BDSM into the series. I’m used to this component framing a story, acting as its foundation for the hero and heroine. In Long Lost and Lost in You, it reads as tangential. I understand the reasons for its incorporation into the storyline. Yet, it reads as BDSM-lite. I imagine that isn’t an issue for many of her readers, yet, for me, it feels like more of a distraction than a necessity for this story. Again, I am sure this lies in my need to understand and know more of Blake’s stories.

I think if I had to define Lexi Blake as a writer I would say she’s more suspense and action than a romance writer. Don’t get me wrong; she writes the heck out of the romance in her stories. The moments are sensual and add a heat to her stories. Yet, the true foundation to Blake’s Long Lost is espionage and intrigue. That aspect of her storytelling is the most gripping, and she illustrates her skill in pulling your reader into her story and leaving her suspended to the page. There is so much story to Long Lost. It surrounds you, challenges you, and keeps you engaged to the very last page. Add to that the gripping and beautiful story of Tucker and Roni, and you’ve got yourself preeminent romantic suspense.

In love and romance,

Professor A

A stolen past

The only thing Tucker remembers of his past is pain. Used in a doctor’s evil experiments, his memories and identity were erased, and his freedom taken. He believed his nightmare was over when he was liberated by the men and women of McKay-Taggart, until he heard the name Steven Reasor. The idea that he could have been involved in the terrible experiments that cost his “brothers” everything crushed him. A desperate attempt to force him to remember the truth almost cost him his life. Now his world is in chaos and his only path to finally uncover the truth and atone for his sins leads to Veronica Croft.

A painful present

Veronica “Roni” Croft knew Dr. Steven Reasor was bad for her, but she also saw a side of the man that no one else knew. Excerpt:

My heart thuds in time with his footsteps as they echo down the hallway, and Rain’s heart beats even faster where it’s pressed against my chest.

She’s here.

Holy shit.

She’s actually fucking here.

I wrap my arms around her trembling body and squeeze so hard I’m afraid I might crush her. I don’t move. I don’t breathe. I close my eyes and pretend that time has stopped, just for us. That tomorrow isn’t coming. That we’re fleshy statues now, and we can stay like this forever.

But we can’t because Rain’s trembles are now full-body shudders as the sob she’s been trying to hold in leaks out all over my chest.

“Wes,” she cries, burying her face in my neck. “I’m so sorry! I shouldn’t have—”

“Shh.” I smooth a hand over her hair and feel her breath, hot and desperate, on my skin.

Rain lifts her tear-streaked face. Her pouty red lips tremble as they pull into a frown, but before she can let out another sob, I seal her mouth with mine. She tastes sad and girlie—all salty tears and cherry lip gloss—but she kisses me back with the determination of a woman. Her tongue slides and swirls around mine. And her hands dive into my hair, holding me like a balloon in danger of floating away. Then, her kisses begin to roam.

“I love you so much,” she murmurs, kissing my cheek.

“Oh my God, I missed you.” Her kisses trace the line of my jaw.

“This is all my fault.” She breathes against my neck. “I’m gonna get you out. I promise. I’ll … I’ll figure something out.”

“Hey.” I capture her face in my hands and tilt it back so that I can stare directly into her wide, panicking eyes when I tell her, “I’ll get myself out. Do you hear me? You shouldn’t be here.”

Rain’s eyelids close as she exhales a quiet, shuddering sob. “This is the only place I want to be.”

Without looking up, Rain grips my zipper and slides it down my chest. I grit my teeth as she reaches in and wraps her arms around my exposed torso, pressing her wet cheek against my bare skin. My eyes sting. My lungs scream for air. Nothing fucking hurts as much as this woman’s touch. It filets me like a dull knife. At first, it hurt because I realized that no one had ever cared for me like that before. Then, it killed me because I knew once she left, no one ever would again. But now? Now, her love cuts me down where I stand because I can no longer deny how much I want it.

I don’t want to die for her or let her go or try to convince myself that she belongs with someone else. I never did. The soul-crushing truth is that I want her more than I’ve ever wanted anything. I want her by my side and in my bed and in my life forever. I still don’t believe that God will let me have her, but until he pries her out of my cold, dead hands, I’m going to keep fighting.
